Thermal energy storage wood with anti-leakage and fire-retardant for indoor low-grade thermal energy utilization

Zhichen Ba,Fanjun Yu,Yimin Shi,Haobo Fan,Zengcheng He,Yonggui Wang,Daxin Liang,Haigang Wang,Zefang Xiao,Zhe Qiu,Yanjun Xie

Thermal energy storage wood (TESW) is a passive energy-efficient building material that effectively regulates indoor temperature and homogenizes the heat distribution. However, the energy storage performance of TESW is diminished by leakage. In addition, the flammable phase change materials incorporated within the wood are potential fire hazards. In this study, TESW with flame-retardant and anti-leakage (P 9 A 1 –UP–wood C ) was prepared by impregnating wood cell lumen with polyethylene glycol (PEG), phytic acid, urea and acrylic acid, and thermally initiating cross-linking. Accordingly, the enthalpy and phase change temperature of P 9 A 1 –UP–wood C were 47.98 J g −1 and 25.07 °C, respectively. Meanwhile, 98.95 % of the enthalpy remained after 100 cycles. In addition, the total smoke release of P 9 A 1 –UP–wood C was reduced by 28.61 % from that of raw wood (wood C ), and the production rates of CO 2 and CO during the combustion process were also significantly decreased, indicating good smoke-suppressing and toxicity-reducing effects of the flame retardants. The building-energy efficiency of the TESW was simulated in Designbuilder software. This flame-retardant, leakage-resistant TESW prepared via a toxic solvent-free method can improve the safety and long-term stability of passive energy-saving materials and promotes the storage and reuse of low-grade thermal energy.

Corn straw supported high-performance phase change composites: Strategy to turn agricultural residues into high efficient and stable thermal energy storage materials

X. Jiang,J. Liu,J. Ren,P. Fan,K. Yang,H. Cai

Using polypyrrole (PPy)-coated agricultural corn straw (CS) as support frameworks, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as phase change components, a shape-stable phase change thermal storage composite (CS@PPy-PEG x ) was obtained by simple crosslinking, melt-blending, and freeze-drying processes. With the help of potential non-covalent interactions among each component (e.g., hydrogen bonding), the encapsulation of PEG in these composites reached as high as 90 wt%, and displayed-enhanced thermal conductivities (a maximum of ∼0.22 W/(m·K)), thermal reliabilities and stabilities (with no obvious shape deformation after 100 heating and cooling cycles), promising thermal storage capacities (with max latent melting heat of ∼145.80 J/g and crystallization heat of ∼141.50 J/g), as well as conducive leakage resistance . Thus, this study paved a green and feasible strategy to convert agricultural straw residues into shape-stable and high-performance phase change composites that demonstrated great potential in the field of building thermal energy storage.

Toward Highly Matching the Dura Mater: A Polyurethane Integrating Biocompatible, Leak-Proof, and Self-Healing Properties

Pandi Chen,Fenglong Li,Guyue Wang,Binbin Ying,Chao Chen,Ying Tian,Maosong Chen,Kyung Jin Lee,Wu Bin Ying,Jin Zhu

The dura mater is the final barrier against cerebrospinal fluid leakage and plays a crucial role in protecting and supporting the brain and spinal cord. Head trauma, tumor resection and other traumas damage it, requiring artificial dura mater for repair.  However, surgical tears are often unavoidable. To address these issues, the ideal artificial dura mater should have biocompatibility, anti-leakage, and self-healing properties. Herein, this work has used biocompatible polycaprolactone diol as the soft segment and introduced dynamic disulfide bonds into the hard segment, achieving a multifunctional polyurethane (LSPU-2), which integrated the above mentioned properties required in surgery. In particular, LSPU-2 matches the mechanical properties of the dura mater and the biocompatibility tests with neuronal cells demonstrate extremely low cytotoxicity and do not cause any negative skin lesions. In addition, the anti-leakage properties of the LSPU-2 are confirmed by the water permeability tester and the 900 mm H 2 O static pressure test with artificial cerebrospinal fluid. Due to the disulfide bond exchange and molecular chain mobility, LSPU-2 could be completely self-healed within 115 min at human body temperature. Thus, LSPU-2 comprises one of the most promising potential artificial dura materials, which is essential for the advancement of artificial dura mater and brain surgery.

Form-stable phase change composites encapsulated in 1D multifunctional matrices for enhanced electro-thermal energy conversion

Haiquan Zhang,Susu He,Qiadong Yao,Bozhou Cao,Fuge Wang,Ning Wang

Advanced thermal management in phase change materials (PCMs) requires innovative solutions to simultaneously address three critical challenges: leakage prevention, thermal/electrical conductivity enhancement, and thermal energy storage optimization. Our research demonstrates that strategic incorporation of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured additives coordinates the inherent contradiction between preventing liquid leakage, electro-thermal energy conversion, and thermal storage density. The composite system exhibits enhanced leak resistance through synergistic intermolecular interactions and physical fixation of the terephthalic acid manganese skeletal framework (TAMn, 0.5–2 μm particle size). Concurrently, optimized dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) creates a three-dimensional conductive network that significantly enhances both thermal transport ( k PCMs , 3× thermal conductivity enhancement) and electrical properties ( δ PCMs , 4 orders of magnitude conductivity increase). The meso-microscale CNT framework modulates intermolecular interactions between hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. The incorporation of CNTs into the PEG/TAMn3 composite system results in a significant enhancement of energy storage density from 96.5 J g −1 to 113.5 J g −1 , accompanied by a simultaneous improvement in energy storage efficiency from 71.1 % to 97.4 %. This dual-phase engineering approach establishes a new paradigm for developing high-performance PCM composites that maintain dimensional stability while dramatically improving energy transfer capabilities. Consequently, PCM composites demonstrate high-efficiency energy transduction from electrical to thermal forms, facilitating both thermal energy storage and precise temperature regulation of the material system.

Nanofiber reinforced alginate hydrogel for leak-proof delivery and higher stress loading in nucleus pulposus

Mingguang Li,Yang Wu,Hao Li,Chang Tan,Shuai Ma,Jin Gong,Lu Dong,Wei Huang,Xinzhi Li,Hongbing Deng

Injectable hydrogels effectively remodel degenerative nucleus pulposus (NP) with a resemblance to the in vivo microenvironment. However, the pressure within the intervertebral disc requires load-bearing implants. The hydrogel must undergo a rapid phase transition upon injection to avoid leakage. In this study, an injectable sodium alginate hydrogel was reinforced with silk fibroin nanofibers with core-shell structures. The nanofiber-embedded hydrogel provided support to adjacent tissues and facilitated cell proliferation . Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was incorporated into the core-shell nanofibers for sustained release and enhanced NP regeneration. The composite hydrogel exhibited excellent compressive strength and enabled leak-proof delivery of PRP. In rat intervertebral disc degeneration models, radiography and MRI signal intensities were significantly reduced after 8 weeks of injections with the nanofiber-reinforced hydrogel. The biomimetic fiber gel-like structure was constructed in situ , providing mechanical support for NP repair, promoting the reconstruction of the tissue microenvironment, and finally realizing the regeneration of NP.
