Wood, renowned for its sustainability, specific strength , and thermal insulation , stands as a highly sought-after sustainable structural material. However, the inherent flammability , decay susceptibility, and inadequate mechanical strength hinder its practical applications in high-rise buildings. Here, we report a groundbreaking solution to fabricate multi-functional fire-retardant wood (M-FRW) through a coupled delignification/impregnation procedure followed by densification treatment. The GO/BA created a hybridized network on the M-FRW surface, while BA molecules penetrated the wood cell. As-created M-FRW exhibits a superior flame retardancy due to the physical barrier and catalytic charring effect of GO/BA, as reflected by an ultrahigh limiting oxygen index value of >75 % and an 85 % reduction in the peak of heat release rate compared to natural wood. Furthermore, the GO/BA layer of M-FRW has a sensitive fire alarm response and ultralong alarm time (∼11280 s). More impressively, M-FRW exhibits an exceptional ability to inhibit decay fungi, mold fungi, and common bacteria due to the superimposed anti-microbial effect of GO and BA. Additionally, M-FRW shows desirable mechanical and thermal insulation properties . This work provides a facile strategy to fabricate a multi-functional advanced wood nanocomposite , making them hold great potential for various engineering applications , such as intelligent buildings .

Recently, graphene oxide (GO)-based fire alarm systems have been well developed due to their rapid response to the flame. However, the GO-based fire alarm systems still suffer from low thermal stability and mechanical fragility in the flame, resulting in a short alarm time and unreliable warning. Herein, we have developed a composite paper composed of polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified GO and hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires. The results demonstrate that PEI molecules are powerful to improve thermal stability and flame retardancy of GO and thus increase alarm time, while HAP nanowires with intrinsic nonflammability act as a stable fire-resistant framework to ensure the structural integrity of the composite paper after fire attacking. As a result, the GO/PEI/HAP composite paper shows the continuous fire warning, and particularly, maintains its mechanical strength mostly and high flexibility after fire attacking. This work provides an instructive guideline to design reliable GO-based fire alarm systems.

A graphene oxide (GO)-based smart fire alarm sensor (FAS) has gained rapidly increasing research interest in fire safety fields recently. However, it still remains a huge challenge to obtain desirable GO-based FAS materials with integrated performances of mechanical flexibility/robustness, harsh environment-tolerance, high-temperature resistance, and reliable fire warning and protection. In this work, based on bionic design, the supermolecule melamine diborate (M·2B) was combined with GO nanosheets to form supramolecular cross-linking nanosystems, and the corresponding GO-M·2B (GO/MB) hybrid papers with a nacre-like micro/nano structure were successfully fabricated via a gel-dry method. The optimized GO/MB paper exhibits enhanced mechanical properties, e.g., tensile strength and toughness up to ∼122 MPa and ∼1.72 MJ/m3, respectively, which is ∼3.5 and ∼6.6 times higher than those of the GO paper. Besides, it also shows excellent structural stability even under acid/alkaline solution immersion and water bath ultrasonication conditions. Furthermore, due to the presence of promoting reduction effect and atom doping reactions in GO network, the resulting GO/MB network displays exceptional high-temperature resistance, sensitive fire alarm response (∼0.72 s), and ultralong alarming time (>1200 s), showing promising fire safety and protection application prospects as desirable FAS and fire shielding material with excellent comprehensive performances. Therefore, this work provides inspiration for the design and fabrication of high-performance GO-based smart materials that combine fire shielding and alarm functions.
