Advanced flame-retardant melamine foam with ultra-sensitivity and prolonged fire warning, featuring smart device-integrated graphene oxide/attapulgite nano-coating

Yunyirui Liu,Changhua Li,Rongkai Wu,Jixin Gong,Bihe Yuan

Enhancing flame retardancy and fire-warning capabilities of thermal insulation materials used in building external walls is crucial for ensuring fire safety as well as guarding people's lives and assets. Herein, we have developed an environmentally friendly nano-coating that possesses flame-retardant and early-warning properties by integrating graphene oxide (GO) and attapulgite (ATP) onto melamine foam (MF) through a layer-by-layer self-assembly method (LBL). The GO-ATP-MF composite demonstrates a rapid response to flame (<1 s) due to GO's thermally induced reduction. Additionally, ATP's synergistic flame-retardant effects on both gas and condensed phases contribute to outstanding flame retardancy, enabling an enduring fire alarm duration (>1330 s). The warning duration time of this composite surpasses the majority of GO-based fire-warning nano-coatings reported to date. Moreover, incorporating a Bluetooth wireless transmission system facilitates real-time fire information sharing among smart devices, thereby optimizing fire signal transmission efficiency. Thus, this study advances GO-based flame-retardant nano-coatings and devices with high sensitivity and prolonged fire-warning capabilities, providing an innovative idea to enhance the fire safety of MF as a thermal insulation material.

Solvent-free flexible epoxy intumescent fire-retardant coatings

Ling Chen,Zhou Rudong,Xiang Yanli,Fang Jianbo,Meng Xu,Ren Qiang,Wang Chenyi

Solvent-free epoxy-based intumescent fire-retardant coatings are of significant importance in harsh environments, such as petrochemical facilities, due to their excellent overall protection performance. However, the challenge of low-temperature brittleness and limited intumescence resulting from a highly crosslinked structure still persists. In this study, epoxy-terminated polyester oligomers with an asymmetric structure and low viscosity were synthesized using azelaic acid (AA) and dodecanedioic acid (DA) as dibasic acids with odd and even carbon numbers to address this challenge. The chemical structures of these polyester were thoroughly characterized. Among them, the polyester prepared with a molar ratio of 1:3 for AA and DA (ADE) was optimized as a suitable toughener for solvent-free intumescent fire-retardant coatings based on E-51 epoxy resin. The influence of ADE dosage on thermal stability, fire resistance performance, flexibility, and freeze cracking resistance was investigated in detail. The findings demonstrated that incorporating 50% ADE in ADE/E-51 blends resulted in coating film with an appropriate glass transition temperature and thermal deformation property to match the intumescence behavior of intumescent flame-retardant system. The coating formulated in this way exhibited the best fire protective performance, toughness and freeze cracking resistance.

Wang Zhan,Zhaozhan Gu,Juncheng Jiang,Le Chen

In this study, three kinds of graphene were used as fire retardant fillers to improve the properties of waterborne intumescent fire resistive coatings. The surface area of graphene was measured by nitrogen adsorption-desorption method. The influences of surface area of graphene on fire resistance, thermal stability, smoke suppression and water resistance of the coatings were studied. SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS were used to investigated the structure and composition of the inorganic expansion layer. The spectra of FTIR and XRD demonstrated the inorganic expansion layer had the same chemical composition. The XPS result proved that graphene could enhance anti-oxidation of the inorganic expansion layer. The SEM images showed that the number of holes and cracks decreased with the addition of graphene. The results demonstrated that the graphene with surface area of 212 m 2 /g significantly enhanced the fire resistance, thermal stability, smoke suppression, water resistance of the fire resistive coatings effectively.

Synthesis of antioxidant functionalized nano-TiO2 for improving fire resistance and UV-shielding behavior of intumescent fire-retardant coatings for cable

Hui Liu,Long Yan,Feiyue Wang

A unique hybridized antioxidant named TiO 2 -KH550-PA, of which silane modified nano-TiO 2 particles were grafted with 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid by acylation reaction, was applied to intumescent fire-retardant coatings for cable. Through fire protection test, contact angle test , thermogravimetric test and UV-ageing test, the effects of TiO 2 -KH550-PA on hydrophobicity , flame retardancy, smoke suppression, anti-ageing and charring performance for coatings were evaluated. The obtained results indicate that the TiO 2 -KH550-PA can enhance the hydrophobicity of the coating, thereby reducing the adhesion of dust on the coating surface . Additionally, TiO 2 -KH550-PA has a greatly promoting role in strengthening the fire protection abilities of the coating, but an appropriate amount is the key. Compared to coatings without composite, the intumescent fire-resistant coating for cable containing 1 wt% TiO 2 -KH550-PA (IFRCC 2 ) exhibits excellent fire protection performance, including a prolongation by 2.6 times in failure time, an increase by 1.7 times in char layer height, and an increase by 0.4 times in light transmittance for smoke density test. Furthermore, the presence of TiO 2 -KH550-PA can also strengthen the oxidation resistance , charring ability and char layer stability of the coating, when the remaining mass of IFRCC 2 increases to 49.0 % at 800 °C. The anti-ageing performance test demonstrates that the TiO 2 -KH550-PA can absorb ultraviolet light , eliminate free radicals, and raise the structural stability of the coating, thus reinforcing the durability of the fire resistance for the coating.

Phytate-based transparent and waterproof intumescent flame-retardant coating for protection of wood

Yichen Tian,Chuyi Wang,Yuanfang Ai,Longcheng Tang,Kun Cao

Phytic acid-based phosphate esters (PAPEGs) were prepared through the reaction between phytic acid (PA) and different proportions of polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG-200). Intumescent flame-retardant coating (IFRC) with PAPEG3, PAPEG6, PAPEG9 and PAPEG12 were obtained via thermal curing of PAPEGs and melamine formaldehyde resin (MFR), respectively. The backside temperature of steel with MFR/PAPEGs coating was much lower than that of MFR/PA coating. MFR/PAPEG6 coating showed the best flame retardancy, and the char thickness reached 48 mm from initial thickness of 0.4 mm, and the expansion ratio was 120 times. Cone calorimeter confirmed that the incorporation of PAPEG6 could minimize the heat release rates and total heat release of materials during combustion. Moreover, the MFR/PAPEGs coating possessed both excellent transparency and water resistance. The transmittance of MFR/PAPEG6 and MFR/PAPEG9 was above 87% at 600 nm, and transmittance of MFR/PAPEG12 even reached 90%. The proposed flame-retardant mechanism was that MFR/PAPEGs produced phosphorus-containing acids to dehydrate and carbonize PEG, leading to the formation of graphitized chars. Meanwhile, the nitrogen-containing intermediates simultaneously released noncombustible gases to expand the char and interrupt the combustion reaction.

Biomimetic, highly adhesive, supramolecular nano-coatings for fire-safe polymeric foams

Ju Huang,Leting Yang,Wei Wang,Bin Yu,Chengfei Cao,Zhuyun Bi,Jue Wang,Jian Shen,Lei Song

Constructing fire-protective coatings has been to be an effective strategy for reducing fire hazards of polymeric materials. However, it remains a huge challenge to fabricate high-performance flame retardant coatings with biodegradability, excellent mechanical and thermal properties, as well as strong adhesion. Herein, inspired by snails exhibiting strong adhesion to a variety of surfaces by interfacial hydrogen-bonding, a biomimetic , highly adhesive, supramolecular nano-coating consisting of a tannic acid (TA)-functionalized hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (TA-BNNS), TA and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was prepared by using a hydrogen-bond self-assembly strategy of solvent volatilization regulation. TA-BNNS was prepared via an efficient and green ball milling exfoliation method under mild conditions. Dynamically regulating the hydrogen bonds between PVA and TA molecules through the volatilization of ethanol was to achieve physical cross-linking. Then such a nanocoating was applied for surface treatment of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), which exhibiting excellent flame retardant properties. Compared to pure RPUF, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and peak smoke production rate (PSPR) of the TA/PVA@BNNS coated RPUF were reduced by ~52.4 % and ~53.4 %, respectively. Therefore, this work provides new approach to the design and manufacture of green, efficient and non-toxic flame retardant materials.

Fabrication of Polypyrrole-Decorated Tungsten Tailing Particles for Reinforcing Flame Retardancy and Ageing Resistance of Intumescent Fire-Resistant Coatings

Feiyue Wang,Hui Liu,Long Yan

Polypyrrole-decorated tungsten tailing particles (PPY-TTF) were prepared via the in situ polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of tungsten tailing particles (TTF), and then carefully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) analyses. The effect of PPY-TTF on the flame retardancy, smoke suppression property and ageing resistance of intumescent fire-resistant coatings was investigated by a fire protection test, smoke density test and cone calorimeter test. The results show that PPY-TTF exerts excellent cooperative effect on enhancing the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of the intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which is ascribed to the formation of more cross-linking structures in the condense phase that enhance the compactness and thermal stability of intumescent char. The cooperative effect of PPY-TTF in the coatings depends on its content, and the coating containing 3 wt% PPY-TTF exhibits the best cooperative effect among the samples, showing a 10.7% reduction in mass loss and 35.4% reduction in flame-spread rating compared to that with 3% TTF. The accelerated ageing test shows that the presence of PPY-TTF greatly slows down the blistering and powdering phenomenon of the coatings, thus endowing the coating with the super durability of fire resistance and smoke suppression property. This work provides a new strategy for the resource utilization of tungsten tailing in the field of flame-retardant materials.

Improved flame resistance and thermal insulation properties of steel fireproof coatings based on polyvinyl alcohol @ expandable graphite

Dongdong Tang,Liangbo Zhu,Xie Li,Yuan Liu,Qi Wang

Intumescent fireproof coating (IFC) can effectively slow down the temperature rise of base materials by constructing intumescent heat isolation chars. Expandable graphite (EG), combined with a typical intumescent flame-retardant system, shows an excellent expansion effect. However, it is difficult to be evenly dispersed in the coating system due to its low surface energy, thus limiting its application in IFC. In this research, EG encapsulated by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film was used in combination with conventional intumescent flame retardants to prepare a fireproof coating. Due to the increased hydrophilicity caused by the hydroxy groups of the PVA, both the dispersion and adhesion of EG can be greatly improved in the coating. Additionally, PVA also plays the role of a charring agent to further upgrade the quality of the produced carbon layer . The prepared IFC displays a satisfying synergistic effect . The experimental results showed that the back-surface temperature of the steel plate coated by PVA@EG was reduced to 232 °C after 20 min, far lower than the 250 °C of the unmodified EG system, and the thermal insulation performance was enhanced significantly. Compared with the untreated EG coating, the HRR, THR, and TSR decreased by 79.5 %, 86.0 % and 24.8 %, respectively, and combustion and smoke suppression performance were improved greatly. All in all, PVA@EG endows the coating with superior flame-retardant and thermal insulation performance and greatly improves the safety of steel structures in buildings.

Sodium alginate synergises with copper ion deposition on LDH surface to enhance the fire resistance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Mingtan Wang,Guoqing Xiao,Fei Wang,Chunlin Chen,Junjie Cao,Xiyi Ma,Zhengwei Yang,Rui Zou

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) possesses the effect of interlayer barrier and dilute the concentration of flammable gases due to its unique lamellar structure, which enables it to perform excellent flame retardancy in both gas and condensed phases. In this paper, the abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of sodium alginate (SA) were utilized to confer excellent hydrophilicity to LDH. Meanwhile, through ion substitution at the carboxyl site of sodium alginate, thus introducing Cu to catalysis charring into LDH@SA for the synthesis of a novel organometallic ion flame retardant (LSCu). Combination of flame retardants with intumescent fireproofing coatings to prepare composite coatings and test them for fire performance. The large panel test indicated that when the LSCu content was 4 %, the backside temperature of the steel panel dropped to 174.7°C, and the char layer surface remained intact, without any holes or cracks. In the furnace test, the composite coating had the highest expansion height (15.6 mm) and expansion rate (13.28 %) with uniform expansion. SEM illustrated that the char layer of the composite coating had a honeycomb structure, which enhanced the adsorption of heat and smoke. In addition, the composite coating retained the highest residual char content (28.1 %), which had to do with the synergistic effect between LDH and Cu complexes. Furthermore, through analyzing the residual char, it was demonstrated that the formation of metal oxides by LSCu at elevated temperatures improved the sustained barrier performance of the char layer.

Exfoliated and functionalized boron nitride nanosheets towards improved fire resistance and water tolerance of intumescent fire retardant coating

Cheng Wang,Siqi Huo,Shi Liu,Qi Zhang,Zhitian Liu

In this work, the exfoliated and functionalized boron nitride (f-BN) nanosheets were prepared via facile treatment and used in the intumescent fire retardant (IFR) coatings, which offer passive fire protection to the steel. To acquire the best fire resistance, the formula of the coating was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design. According to the result, the optimal sample, with 36.2 wt% ammonium polyphosphate (APP), 27.4 wt% pentaerythritol (PER), 16.8 wt% melamine (MEL), and 7.9 wt% f-BN, was prepared and its fire resistance was tested in our lab. At the end of fire resistance test, the backside temperature of optimal sample was only 185.2°C, which was very close to the RSM-predicted result, indicating satisfactory fire resistance. During the test, the coating decomposed to form an intumescent char layer with high graphitization degree and compactness, thus suppressing the transfer of heat and protecting the underlying steel. In addition, the optimal coating possessed great water tolerance and thermal stability, and its water contact angle and char yield reached up to 66.7° and 40.5%, respectively. Hence, this IFR coating with satisfied fire retardancy and water tolerance has broad practical future in the fire safety of steel structure.
