Durable anti-icing coating with stability based on self-regulating oil storage layer

Siwen Kuai,Jian Tang,Longpeng Zhou,Yunqiang Li,Nana Chen,Xiao Xue,Hongtao Liu

In recent years, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have emerged as a potential alternative to superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) due to their exceptional anti-icing properties. However, the current challenge lies in the significant lubricant consumption of SLIPSs, which poses a major obstacle to coating durability. In this study, we developed a durable anti-icing coating with stability (DASS), which combines SHSs and SLIPSs. By incorporating high adsorption particles and low cross-linking density rubber into the oil storage layer, the coating achieves an increased oil storage capacity while effectively inhibiting lubricant loss. Additionally, a superhydrophobic layer is introduced on the surface to ensure surface lubrication and prevent lubricant depletion. The three-layer structure enables the coating to maintain a low τ ice (<20kPa) during 30 icing/deicing cycles, showcasing superior de-icing durability compared to conventional anti-icing coatings. Interestingly, the original anti-icing properties of the coating can be restored through external oil replenishment. Furthermore, this coating exhibits excellent resistance against fouling, mechanical stress, chemical exposure, temperature variations, and weathering effects, making it highly suitable for practical applications in anti-icing coatings.

Photothermal superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings based on modified polypyrrole for cement concrete

Andong Xiao,Rong Xiao,Zaiming Geng,Gang Wan,Sisi Zhu,Chuanshi Cheng,Yunju Bai,Yi Lv,Yu Qian,Chang Liu

Current methods for superhydrophobic modification of polypyrrole (PPy) are typically complex and challenging to implement at scale. To address this limitation, this study developed a durable superhydrophobic photothermal coating by modifying PPy through a facile surface treatment method. The successful modification was confirmed by TEM and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, revealing a uniform polymer film on PPy surfaces. When combined with epoxy resin at an optimal mass ratio of 0.3, the coating exhibited well-defined micro/nano structures with a contact angle of 153.6°. The coating maintained good chemical stability and mechanical durability. Under simulated conditions, the coating demonstrated excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and cycling stability. In freeze–thaw testing, coated concrete specimens showed significantly enhanced frost resistance, with mass loss reduced to one-fifth compared to uncoated samples after 50 cycles. This innovative coating system provides an effective strategy for improving concrete durability in harsh environments. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

An Extreme-Environment-Resistant Self-Healing Anti-Icing Coating

Ruiqi Li,Shu Tian,Yunqing Tian,Jiancheng Wang,Sijia Xu,Kai Yang,Jing Yang,Lei Zhang

Anti-icing coatings on outdoor infrastructures and transportations inevitably suffer from surface injuries, especially in extreme weather events (e.g., freezing weather or acid rain). The coating surface damage can result in anti-icing performance loss or even icing promotion. The development of anti-icing coatings that enables self-healing in extreme conditions is highly desired but still challenging. Herein, an extreme-environment-resistant self-healing anti-icing coating is developed by integrating fluorinated graphene (FG) into a supramolecular polymeric matrix. The coating exhibits both anti-icing and deicing performance (ice nucleation temperature is ≈−30.3 °C; ice shear strength is ≈48.7 kPa), mainly attributable to the hydrophobic FG and silicone-based supramolecular material. Notably, owing to the crosslinking polymeric network with various dynamic bonds, this coating can sustain anti-icing/deicing performance after autonomous self-healing under harsh conditions including low temperature (−20 °C), strong acid (pH = 0), and strong alkali (pH = 14) environments. This coating paves the way to meet the anti-icing demand in open air, especially for the infrastructures in polar regions or acid/alkali environments.

Oily Long-Term Anti-Icing Coating Based on Hydrophobic Cross-Linking Composite Resin

Zhen Xiao,Mingyang Du,Peining Li,Jingyu Liu,Xiaoyu Tian,Zhi Cheng,Shouren Wang

In this paper, a new type of passive anti-icing coating, i.e., interfacial lubrication coating, is proposed and investigated. The coating was prepared using the spin-coating or drop-coating method, and by adding hydrophobic and lipophilic modified particles to the hybrid resin to lock up the oil, which can significantly reduce the adhesion between the surface and the ice, thus effectively preventing icing. The study systematically characterized the surface morphology, wettability, anti-icing properties, mechanical properties and durability of the four interfacial lubrication coatings. The results show that the hybrid resin-based coating based on fluorinated ethylene–vinyl ester copolymer (FEVE) and polyurethane (PU) exhibits the best anti-icing performance, with ice adhesion as low as 11 kPa and an extended icing delay time of 779 s. Meanwhile, the coating shows excellent long-term stability with virtually no increase in the ice shear strength after being left on the surface for 6 months. The durability mechanism analysis showed that the adsorption of hydrophobic and lipophilic modified nanoporous SiO 2 on silicone oil and the structural properties of the coating with a dense surface and porous interior are the key factors for achieving the retardation of silicone oil release and maintain the lubricity. This study provides new ideas for the design of efficient and long-lasting anti-icing coatings.

Fabrication of a durable anti-icing composite coating based on polyurethane elastomer and silica nanoparticles

Mingming Yu,Lu Liang,Yi Zhang,Zhiyong Wang

In order to design and fabricate hydrophobic, durable and anti-icing coating for aircraft, a polyurethane elastomer matrix was hydrophobically modified and incorporated with fluorinated SiO2 nanoparticles to prepare a micro/nanostructured coating. The micro/nanostructured coating with low surface energy displayed significantly improved mechanical properties and hydrophobicity, which exhibited the water contact angle of 162° as well as the sliding angle of 2°. The coating is highly stretchable, which could sustain large-scale extension, and exhibits tensile strength and elongation at break up to 16.22 MPa and 385%, respectively. Furthermore, the coating exhibited a remarkably weak ice adhesion strength of 14.33 kPa, on which the accumulative ice is prone to fall off under natural wind and its own weight. The coating sustained long-term superhydrophobic properties and anti-icing performance even after 1000 abrasion cycles. The proposed method for the production of scalable superhydrophobic coating is cost-effective and can be applied in aerospace and automotive anti-icing systems.

Electrothermal/Superhydrophobic Anti-Deicing Coating with a Sandwich Structure Based on Micro-Nanomaterials

Ke Li,Qiang Wang,Xu Zhou,Yulong He,Yanan Shi,Mengjie Qin,Binrui Wu,Ningli Chen,Ruidi Liu,Xian Yi

The freezing phenomenon poses significant challenges in many fields, causing serious casualties and economic losses. Compared with traditional measures, active/passive coupled anti-deicing technology exhibits greater adaptability and effectiveness in diverse scenarios. Herein, an electrothermal/superhydrophobic coating featuring a sandwich structure was proposed for anti-deicing applications. Benefiting from the hydrophobic modified micro-nanostructure, this superhydrophobic coating boasted remarkable abilities to delay icing and repel water adhesion, rendering it ideal for combating freezing rain. Under a certain electrothermal power density, the coating could be heated quickly and evenly. Furthermore, it has proven to be highly capable of enduring prolonged continuous heating and rigorous high–low-temperature cycling tests, delivering exceptional performance. To evaluate its dynamic anti-icing performance, icing wind tunnel tests were conducted, which demonstrated that the coating can prevent freezing with the coupled electrothermal/superhydrophobic properties, even under harsh icing environments. This work would inspire the design of electrothermal/superhydrophobic anti-deicing coating with a sandwich structure and promote the practical engineering applications.

Facile fabrication of high performance hydrophilic anti-icing polyurethane methacrylate coatings cured via UV irradiation

Junhao Zhou,Haoxiang Xu,Liming Tang

In this article, high performance hydrophilic anti-icing coatings with carboxyl groups were facilely fabricated via UV curing polyurethane methacrylate prepolymers , which were prepared through polyaddition of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) gradually in acetone (A series prepolymer) or isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) (B series prepolymer), and finally treated with triethylamine (TEA). The structures of A series prepolymer and the corresponding cured coating were confirmed via various techniques. The anti-icing performance of the cured coatings was investigated by ice freezing delay test, ice adhesion strength test, water contact angle and water absorption tests, and DSC test. Based on the testing results, the anti-icing behavior was defined as the incomplete icing of water on hydrophilic surface to weaken the interface adhesion. The ice adhesion strength firstly decreased as the DMPA content increased. At DMPA content of 5 %, the coating displayed a stable and very low ice adhesion strength of 40 kPa even after 25 times of icing (at −12 °C) and de-icing (at 25 °C) cycling. At even higher DMPA content, the ice adhesion strength improved because of the anchoring effect of the ice. Moreover, when IBOA was used as reactive diluent and participated in the polymerization with the prepolymers, the obtained B series coatings could have much improved mechanical properties, together with low ice adhesion strength. The facile fabrication process, excellent anti-icing performance and adjustable mechanical properties should make the coatings suitable for various purposes.

Design and preparation of durable anti-icing polysilazane coatings with abrasion and UV resistance

Jian Kuang,Xiaowei An,Congshu Huang,Hongfei Chen,Chunyang Wei

This work developed a method to enhance the durability of anti-icing performance of a coating to endure abrasion and UV exposure, through grafting functional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to TiO 2 particles and further reacting with polysilazane (PSZ) pre-polymer. This method remarkably improved the anti-icing properties of PSZ-based coatings evaluated by freezing delay time and ice removal shear strength. After either surface abrasion for 50 cycles or UV exposure for 100 h, the modified coatings exhibited ice shear strength increase by only 10.44 and 6.44 kPa respectively, significantly lower comparing to that of the coatings containing 30% TiO 2 with no PDMS modification (29.69 and 11.88 kPa, respectively). Such strengthened durability of anti-icing performance is attributed to the PDMS molecules bridging PSZ rigid segments and TiO 2 compositions, which formed a hydrophobic cross-linking network structure. The durable anti-icing technique developed herein shall appeal to many outdoor applications of facilities and infrastructures.
