Graphical A multifunctional coating composed of PTFE, PDMS, and nano silica was successfully prepared via deposition coating and heating treatment in this study, which possessed excellent anti-corrosion, anti-scaling, anti-fouling, anti-icing, and self-cleaning properties. This superhydrophobic coating can be loaded onto various facilities and equipment as top finish, protecting the substrates from water containing contaminants. This coating may have broad applications in the field of metal substrate protection. PTFE-based superhydrophobic coatings have received increasing research and the fabricated coatings exhibited excellent anti-corrosion, anti-scaling, anti-fouling, and anti-icing properties. In order to further enhance the hydrophobicity of PTFE coating, a PTFE-based coating consisted of nano-silica and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was fabricated by deposition coating and annealing treatment. The water contact angle and sliding angle of the coating achieved 160.65° and 3.02°, respectively, demonstrating it possessed superhydrophobic property. Due to its excellent surface feature, the coating exhibited resistance to milk, coffee, and mud water, and could be easily cleaned by water flow. Besides, the water droplet on the coating had a longer freezing time and the ice droplet could be easily removed from the coating. Ascribed to the abundant nonpolar groups and the air cushion formed under water, the prepared coating had outstanding anti-scaling and anti-corrosion properties. The electrochemical impedance of the steel plate with the coating (above 9000 Ω·cm 2 ) increased by two orders of magnitude compared with the non-coating one (78.2 Ω·cm 2 ), and the anti-scaling rates of the coating towards BaSO 4 and SrSO 4 were all above 80%. It is promising that the coating will be a competitive candidate in many application fields.

Scale deposition on the surface of pipelines is a common phenomenon in industrial production. It not only decreases the heat conduction efficiency of the pipeline and increases energy consumption, but also leads to corrosion of the pipeline. Although varieties methods are developed to prevent pipeline scale deposition, these methods could not meet the requirements of harsh production conditions. This study introduces a novel oil-infused surface on galvanized iron for efficient anti-scaling in industrial pipelines. The surface of galvanized iron is firstly oxidized and modified to be superhydrophobic/superoleophilic, followed by injection of oil to form oil-infused surface. This oil-infused superhydrophobic/superoleophilic surface demonstrates excellent water repellency and superior anti-scaling performance compared to untreated galvanized iron. It may provide a promising anti-scaling option for iron-based pipelines in industrial productions.

The use of lubricant-infused surfaces (LIS) presents a highly promising approach to mitigating contamination from various sources, including bacteria, ice, and scale. However, these lubricants’ natural liquid characteristics frequently cause them to run out in adverse environments, which results in a failure to prevent fouling. Here, we report the sustainable anti-scaling performance of a phase-change lubricant-infused surface (PCLIS). The increased resistance is ascribed to a high degree of stability in the solid state at temperatures below PCL’s melting point ( T < T m ). Furthermore, the anti-scaling capability comes from its smooth morphology and reduced scale adhesion in liquid state ( T > T m ). As a result, this work offers a viable method to deal with scaling problems in real-world applications, especially those that involve temperature changes.

Scaling activities pose gigantic challenge for underwater equipments, making the development of surfaces with long-term anti-scaling functionality crucial. However, the reduction in anti-scaling performance caused by the loss of air film limits the application of conventional bionic superhydrophobic surfaces underwater. Here, a novel solid slippery surface (SOSLS) is engineered through the strategic integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a structural reinforcement matrix and paraffin as a phase-change filler within a polyurethane (PU) host. The SOSLS demonstrates exceptional anti-scaling performance, as evidenced by performing 240-day static and 30-day dynamic scaling tests. Conversely, the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) develops scaling in the short term and shows obvious scaling at 120 days due to the loss of gas film. Additionally, the SOSLS displays self-healing ability both in air and underwater at different temperature due to solid-liquid transition of paraffin and reversible dynamic bonds of PU. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic groups of PU and paraffin act as barriers to separate water molecules from SOSLS. This self-healing capability further improves long-term anti-scaling performance of SOSLS underwater, thereby effectively sustaining service life of SOSLS. Furthermore, the SOSLS exhibits remarkable stability, self-cleaning and anti-friction properties. Hence, this SOSLS holds promising prospect for relevant real-world anti-scaling applicability.

Superhydrophobic surfaces integrated with great water-repellency have been extensively studied while their practical applications are restrained by the infirm rough structures and poor chemical durability. In this study, an ultra-durable superhydrophobic polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composite coating with repairable microstructures has been constructed by innovatively introducing the expandable graphite (EAG) and elastic fluororubber. Hydrophobic EAG@SiO 2 nanoparticles synthesized by sol–gel and modified with perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS) can expand to establish abundant micro/nanostructures for superhydrophobicity during the thermal treatment. Additionally, fluororubber powders as elastic micro-supports endows the surface structures with reversible deformation to resist the external mechanical damage. The prepared coating can restore its microstructures and superhydrophobicity even after 2000 abrasion cycles under a pressure of 125 kPa, exhibiting a fantastic mechanical durability. Moreover, the fabricated coating possessed good anti-corrosion and anti-scaling properties in high salinity oil/water emulsion due to the intrinsic oleophilicity of EAG@SiO 2 and fluororubber, which can transform the surface shielding layer from fragile air film to stable oil film to impede scaling and corrosion mediums. Simultaneously, the prepared superhydrophobic coating also demonstrated outstanding self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties to prevent surface contamination by diatomite or glutinous slurry during outdoor application. Thus, this ultra-durable superhydrophobic coating with extraordinary repairable microstructures and anti-corrosion/scaling capabilities will be expected to open a new avenue to realize the large-scale applications of superhydrophobic coatings in harsh environments.

Prolonged indwelling of ureteral stents often leads to encrustation, which can cause functional failure and poses a significant clinical challenge. Zwitterionic polymers exhibit excellent anti-fouling performance due to their strong surface hydrations. Inspired by this, a multifunctional hydrogel coating based on a trimethylamine N-oxide zwitterionic polymer was developed for polyurethane stents to mitigate encrustation. The coating was fabricated using an innovative approach that combines superwetting-assisted interfacial polymerization strategy with dip coating technology, significantly improving the adhesion strength between the coating and the stent surface to ensure long term stability. Notably, the coating strongly interacts with water molecules to form a robust hydration layer, effectively inhibiting bacterial adhesion. In a 90-day simulated urinary flow test, the coating demonstrated outstanding anti-encrustation performance, reducing encrustation by 92%, while maintaining excellent biocompatibility. This coating technology provides an effective and durable solution for preventing complications associated with ureteral stents and shows broad application potential in the field of urological medical devices.

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) and slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) attract great attention due to their multiple properties in both industries and our daily lives. Here, we first fabricated the SHS with micro-scale flower-like structures composed of nano-sheets on pipeline steel substrate. Then, we obtained the SLIPS by spin-coating lubricant into gaps of micro-scale flower-like structures, with the air still trapped among gaps of nano-sheets. The SLIPS shows excellent liquid repellency as the SHS. The SLIPS also shows stability after the scour of flowing water. These results of polarization curves (Tafel) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies deduced the SLIPS with better and more stable anti-corrosion property than the SHS. Compared with the SHS, the lack of attachment and CaCO 3 on the SLIPS indicates that the SLIPS demonstrates better anti-fouling and anti-scaling properties than the SHS. Moreover, the SLIPS shows promising wear resistance under the abrasion simulated by sandpaper compared with the SHS. Notably, the air trapped among nano-sheets is conducive to the lubricant flowing to the surface quickly, exhibiting spontaneous self-healing in atmosphere, even if part flower-like structures of the SLIPS subject to damage with the lubricant consumed after scratched.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) with excellent anticorrosion and scale inhibition properties has attracted extensive attention, but the unstable lubricant layer significantly limit its long-term application. Herein, a robust slippery polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (ADP)/carboxylated carbon nanotube (C-CNTs)/microcapsules (MCs) composite coating was constructed by combining hierarchical micro-/nanopores, chemical anchoring and microcapsules pre-storage. The homogeneous micro-/nanopores were formed owing to the phase separation of PVDF and ADP, benefiting for the storage of lubricants. The isocyanate N3390 was sprayed as binder on the substrate to enhance the interfacial bonding strength of the composite coating through the reaction of -NCO with the -OH of ADP and Al substrate, -COOH of C-CNTs. Moreover, the microcapsules containing hydroxyfluorosilicone oil in PU@SiO 2 shell were synthesized via Pickering emulsion polymerization to repair the damaged lubricant layer and resist mechanical friction. Simultaneously, the prepared coating with oil film loss of 3.47 wt% can maintain its slippery performance after 6000 rpm high shear rotation, which can be ascribed to the covalent bonds generated by the reaction among the -OH groups of the hydroxyfluorosilicone oil, ADP and the -COOH of C-CNTs, resulting in the anchoring of oil molecules. This outstanding stability of lubricant layer property results in excellent anti-scaling property with the minimal calcium content (1.51 wt%) and corrosion resistance with a corrosion velocity of 2.33 × 10 −5 mm/year. Therefore, the exceptional stability of this slippery composite coating offers new application possibilities in corrosion protection, marine transportation and other fields.

The high salinity and coexistence of scaling ions (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO 3 − ) in wastewater challenge the efficacy and durability of palladium (Pd)-mediated electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) reaction for chlorinated organic pollutant detoxification, due to the accompanying Cl − poisoning at Pd sites and scaling on electrode. In a concentrated NaCl solution (5.8 g L − 1 ) with Ca 2+ (80.0 mg L − 1 ), Mg 2+ (30.0 mg L − 1 ) and HCO 3 − (180.0 mg L − 1 ), the EHDC efficiency of Pd towards 2,4-dichlorophenol decreases significantly from 67.8% to 33.1% in 72.0 h of reaction, and the electrode is covered with layers of fluffy aragonite precipitate. Herein we demonstrate the inclusion of a commercial antiscalant 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) can prevent both scale formation and Cl − poisoning, leading to an efficient and steady EHDC process. A mechanistic study reveals that the unique dual function of PBTC primarily originates from the bearing phosphonate and carboxyl groups. With the large affinity of these groups (especially the phosphonate group) for scaling cations and Pd, the PBTC can chelate and stabilize the scaling cations in water and replace Cl − at Pd surface. It can also release protons, and trigger the formation of more electron-deficient Pd δ+ species via PBTC-Pd binding, leading to an enhanced EHDC. This work provides effective solutions to the scaling/poisoning issues that commonly encountered in real wastewater and paves a solid road for EHDC application in pollution abatement.

Superhydrophobic coatings with attractive antifouling, anti-icing, and antiadhesion properties have considerable application potential. However, their instability hinders their large-scale application. In this study, a robust superhydrophobic microcapsule (MC)-based composite fluoroethylene vinyl ether/fluorinated ethylene propylene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/microcapsule (MC) coating was fabricated by emulsion polymerization and one-step spraying. Owing to the responsive release of hydroxyl-fluoro silicone oil (HFSO) from MCs and self-lubricating effect of CNTs, the superhydrophobicity of the as-prepared coating was retained after 1000 cycles of abrasion and 7 d of a strong acid/alkali immersion. Moreover, the MC-based superhydrophobic coating exhibited an excellent anti-scaling property under water-flowing conditions, which can be attributed to the cooperative effect of the air film trapped in the uniform micro/nanostructures and the stable lubricant layer formed by the released HFSO. The impact resistance of the MC-based coating was excellent, and its superhydrophobicity was retained even under sand impacting (1100 g), water jetting (338 kPa), and slurry contamination (100 cycles). This study provides a simple and effective approach for fabricating a robust superhydrophpobic coating with self-healing and anti-scaling properties. Further, it paves the way for developing superhydrophobic coatings that can be used in under harsh environments, such as in oil–gas gathering and transferring pipelines.

Electrochemical precipitation is a promising technique for hardness abatement without the addition of external ions. However, the scale layer on cathode deteriorated the removal efficiency and limited the practical application. Herein, a fenced cathode structure was designed to prevent cathodic precipitation. The cathode was fenced by a crystallization-inducing material for separating the OH − production and crystallization processes. Precipitation on the cathode was confirmed to shift to the crystallization-inducing material, and the clean fenced cathode provided efficient long-term OH − production. At a current density of 40 A/m 2 , the Ca 2+ or Mg 2+ removal efficiency increased by 12.8% or 46.1%, respectively, compared to those of a traditional cathode. Thermodynamic equilibrium in synthetic water and mine water, mass transfer and the location of precipitation were analyzed to elucidate the electrochemical precipitation process. The enhanced mechanism was ascribed to the crystallization-inducing material, which remarkably promoted the crystallization process, and hindered OH − migration, thereby increased the pH of alkaline microenvironment. Notably, a recovery design was proposed to recover pure calcite and brucite from alkalinity-free wastewater. The design reveals a promising strategy for enhancing the crystallization process and reducing cathodic scale, also initiating a new research direction toward hardness removal.
