Ice accumulation on glass insulators is likely to cause faults such as flashover, tripping and power failure, which interfere with the normal operation of the power grid. Accordingly, superhydrophobic coatings with great anti-icing potential have received much attention. In this study, three superhydrophobic coatings (PTFE, Al2O3and SiO2) were successfully prepared on glass surfaces by using one-step spraying. The microscopic morphology, wettability, anti-icing and anti-glaze icing properties of the superhydrophobic coatings were comparatively analyzed. The results indicated that the PTFE coating had a densely distributed rough structure, showing a contact angle of 165.5° and a sliding angle of 3.1°. The water droplets on the surface could rebound five times. Compared with the Al2O3and SiO2coatings, the anti-icing performance of the PTFE coating was significantly improved. The freezing time was far more than 16 times that of glass (4898.7 s), and the ice adhesion strength was 9 times lower than that of glass (27.5 kPa). The glaze icing test in the artificial climate chamber showed that the icing weight of the PTFE coating was 1.38 g, which was about 32% lower than that of the glass. In addition, the icing/melting and abrasion cycles destroyed the low-surface-energy substances and nanostructures on the surface, leading to the degradation of the anti-icing durability of the PTFE coatings. However, the PTFE coating still maintained excellent hydrophobicity and anti-icing properties after UV irradiation for up to 624 h. The superhydrophobic coatings prepared in this work have promising development prospects and offer experimental guidance for the application of anti-icing coatings on glass insulators. Keywords:superhydrophobic coating;glass insulator;spraying;anti-icing

The ice covering of transmission lines tends to cause flashover along the surface, and even topple the tower in serious cases, which seriously threatens the safe operation of the power grid. Here, a dual active and passive anti-icing strategy was designed. The active deicing was achieved by photothermal effect, and passive anti-icing was based on superhydrophobicity. On the one hand, the semi-embedded candle ash gives the surface excellent photothermal characteristics, which can quickly melt the ice through sunlight; On the other hand, the superhydrophobic coating based on candle ash demonstrates excellent passive anti-icing performance, which reduces ice adhesion as small as 3.0 kPa and delayed freezing time as long as 1096 s. Furthermore, the semi-embedded structure enables the superhydrophobic coating excellent anti-abrasion ability and outstanding self-cleaning property. This combination of active and passive anti-icing strategies provides a reference for the current anti-icing and deicing methods of transmission lines.

Passive anti-icing and active deicing have been combined to improve the anti-icing performance of substrate surface in recent years. Some researchers have prepared active deicing coatings by inducing particles with photothermal or magnetic thermal properties. However, the thermogenesis of these coatings can weaken due to loss of particles. In this work, we first take advantage of the photothermal properties of iodine in deicing process, using polymer substrate doped with iodine by heating to endow the substrate with a photothermal property. Superhydrophobic SiO 2 /SiC coatings with passive anti-icing properties were fabricated on the iodine-doped substrate by a simple spray coating method. The prepared surface of samples can warm up to melt the ice under the irradiation of near infrared light and possesses excellent water repellency with a contact angle up to 162°. The results of 3D profile and microstructure observed via scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that the coatings combined with microscale SiC and nanoscale SiO 2 form voids that can capture air pockets. The photothermal effect of substrate-iodine was demonstrated as the surface temperature of the coatings rapidly increased to about 200 °C upon 10 s of irradiation. The concept of harnessing the iodine doping substrate to achieve superior photothermal performances in deicing might shed new light on the development of anti-icing materials for various applications.

Although advances in industrial products have brought convenience to our lives, severe weather has increased the safety risks to industrial facilities. Considerable efforts have been made to develop high-performance superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings. Nevertheless, designing a functional coating with both anti-icing properties and self-deicing remains a major challenge. Here, we propose a design strategy to exploit a photothermal superhydrophobic multifunctional coating with excellent anti-icing and deicing properties based on MXene by high-temperature sintering and layer-by-layer coating. Specifically, poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) particles provide low surface energy and binding effects. Room-temperature-vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) enhances the dispersion of the composite particles and the adhesion of the functional coating to a glass substrate. Furthermore, the functional coatings constructed with MXene exhibit outstanding photothermal effects, imparting excellent superhydrophobicity (CA = 160.18°, SA = 1.8°) and efficient photothermal conversion (equilibrium temperature of 109.3 °C). An anti-icing/deicing test is simulated to confirm their efficient anti-icing/deicing performance in practical applications. Overall, the functional coatings designed in this work can be applied in real industrial facilities.

Overhead conductor icing is one of the main factors causing transmission line failures. Superhydrophobic surface (SHS) with composite pore structure exhibits excellent anti-icing effectiveness and durability. Herein, this novel SHS was prepared on complex aluminum conductors by two-step anodic oxidation technology, and the motion behavior of droplets on the SHS conductor in the glaze icing environment was studied experimentally to analyze the anti-icing mechanism. The simulated glaze icing experiment results show that the SHS conductor significantly reduces the ice accumulation, and the icing weight is only 23 % of the untreated conductor. Compared with the flat surface, the groove structure of the SHS conductor enhances the ability of millimeter-sized droplets to bounce, and the contact time is less than 9 ms. Also, micron-sized spraying droplets exhibit excellent mobility on the SHS conductor surface, and the contact time is further reduced. Moreover, the SHS conductor has a good ability to delay the freezing of spraying droplets. The above factors endow the SHS conductor excellent anti-icing performance. This work lays a foundation for the anti-icing application of SHS on transmission lines.

Superhydrophobic surface (SHS) has attracted tremendous scientific interests in anti/de-icing due to its extremely low water affinity. However, poor durability and scalability have greatly hindered its applications; besides, study of the ice adhesion on SHS is not sufficient. Here, robust SHS with various surface structures and chemical components were obtained via a facile process: a suspension containing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and multi-scale silica nanoparticles (SNs) was poured on steel substrate and followed with desiccation. The surface could withstand severe abrasion without losing superhydrophobicity, and showed possibility to be scaled up. The ice adhesion tests showed that: 1) the surface structures played more important role in reducing ice adhesion than the surface chemical components; 2) the ice adhesion tended to be minimized on the SHS with multi-scale nanoparticles . The low ice adhesion could be ascribed to the following two aspects: the air pockets that greatly reduced the contact between ice and the resultant surface , and the lubrication of overcooled water in the surface asperities .

The corrosion protection and ice-over delay of aluminum alloys have always been pressing issues. Lotus-inspired superhydrophobic materials show great potential in the field of corrosion prevention and delayed icing, but they are currently prone to failure due to wetting and adhesion by low surface tension liquids. In this paper, we constructed a superamphiphobic (superhydrophobic and superoleophobic) organosilane-grafted attapulgite (OG-ATP) coating on 5083 aluminum alloy substrates using ATP, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFAS) through hydrolysis-condensation reaction and spray-coating technique. The coating exhibits contact angles greater than 150º and sliding angles less than 10º for water, glycerol, ethylene glycol, peanut oil, and even n-hexadecane with surface tension@20 ºC of 27.5 mN/m. Through studying surface morphologies , chemical compositions, electrochemical behaviors, self-cleaning, and anti-icing performance, it was found that the R ct and |Z| 0.01 Hz of the protected aluminum alloy increased by four orders of magnitude with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 99.99 %, demonstrating excellent anti-corrosion functionality. Additionally, icing test results at -5 °C, -10 °C, and -15 °C show that the prepared coating exhibits significant delayed icing performance. We believe that the integration of properties such as water-oil repellency, self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing will enable superamphiphobic materials to demonstrate enormous application prospects in various fields.

Micro-roughness and low-surface-energy anti-icing surfaces attract tremendous interest from researchers due to superhydrophobicity and low ice affinity. However, the rapid fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) without developed microstructure via template methods has been the bottleneck for further applications. In this work, ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) loaded with graphene (GP) as magnetic nanoparticles are introduced into the polypropylene (PP) matrix as a heat vehicle for superhydrophobic anti-icing/de-icing surfaces. Microarchitectured PP/GP/Fe 3 O 4 surfaces are fabricated via a combining method of micro-injection molding and magnetic attraction. An analysis of directed particles migration with magnetic attraction is conducted using a multi-physical field coupling model. The magnetic attraction boosts micropillars with a height from ∼85 to ∼150 μm and keeps surfaces maintaining water contact angles at a high level (∼153°) and the stable air plastron for repetitive droplet impacting at an initial velocity of 1 m s −1 . With full-grown micropillars, light can be absorbed more efficiently by elongating the optical path for multiple reflections to occur. In comparison with neat PP surface, the light-to-heat performance of the composite surface shows an increase in temperature from ambient to 94 °C within 67 s under one sun irradiation at an intensity of 1 kW m −2 and a decrease in ice adhesion strength from ∼30 to ∼9 kPa within the same period. The photothermal efficacy of the magnetic particles confers a prolonged delay in icing on SHS. A practical application of manufacturing of SHS is expected to be possible due to their excellent passive anti-icing and active de-icing properties for outdoor injection parts.

Condensation freezing inhibition is of great practical importance for anti-icing applications; however, no coatings with this performance have been reported. Here, we report the inhibition of condensation freezing on patterned polyelectrolyte coatings, including polyelectrolyte brush (PB), polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM), and polyelectrolyte hydrogel (PH) surfaces, benefiting from their feature in regulating ice nucleation and propagation via changing counterions. On the reported surfaces, ice nucleation can be initiated exclusively at the domains with the polyelectrolytes; moreover, spontaneous ice propagation can be achieved atop the patterned polyelectrolyte surface. Consequently, condensed water surrounding the frozen drops on the patterned polyelectrolyte surface evaporates due to the instantaneously released latent heat in the course of ice propagation. Afterward, ice grows specifically on polyelectrolyte surfaces via desublimation as the saturated vapor pressure of ice is smaller than that of condensed water drops. As such, an ice-free region up to 96% of the entire surface area can be accomplished. We demonstrate that various polyelectrolyte coatings can be easily introduced on almost all surfaces, revealing great promise for anti-icing applications.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces have received great attention in anti-adhesion applications, and ionic liquids are selected as the infiltrated liquid in recent research due to their non-volatility. Beyond the complicated steps, infiltrating the viscous ionic liquid within a porous structure is challenging during the conventional fabrication process. Herein, a facile method is proposed to fabricate polyurethane-based slippery ionic-liquid-infused coatings in one step through a phase separation process. The solid structure grows from the ionic liquid through a liquid–liquid phases separation process. The coatings perform excellent anti-bacterial and anti-icing properties owing to the biocide nature, lubricity, and low freezing point of ionic liquids.

Ice formation on equipment and infrastructure surfaces can lead to severe damage and operational disruptions, necessitating advancements in passive anti-icing technologies to enhance de-icing efficiency. Superhydrophobic materials offer notable improvements, such as minimal water affinity and reduced ice adhesion. However, their practical application is hindered by limited durability and vulnerability to cold and humid conditions. This study presents the development of a micro-nanostructured ZrN/MoSe 2 photo-electrothermal superhydrophobic composite coating, which exhibits physical and chemical self-cleaning capabilities both day and night. This innovative coating rapidly heats due to the combined effects of solar absorption and Joule heating. It reaches 89.4 °C in 600 s under simulated sunlight and 81 °C with a 15 V electrical input in 300 s. With a contact angle exceeding 155°, it demonstrates superior self-cleaning abilities. Moreover, the coating retains its exceptional anti-icing and de-icing properties even after exposure to mechanical stress, abrasion, and harsh chemical environments. It can rapidly melt ice from surfaces in just 66 s at −20 °C under one sun, achieving a 76 % efficiency in photo-thermal de-icing. Electro-thermal de-icing tests reveal that the coating can melt ice in 55 s with an 87 % efficiency. These promising features, attributed to the unique properties of ZrN nanoparticles and MoSe 2 nanosheets, significantly provide substantial advancements in superhydrophobic coating technologies. They offer the potential for large-scale production and enhanced performance in ice management.
