The flattened bamboo board (FB) represents a promising innovation in the bamboo industry. To address the challenges of flammability and hygroscopicity, composite coatings consisting of melamine (MEL), phytic acid (PA), cerium ions (Ce 3+ ), and sodium laurate (La) are assembled on the FB surface through an in-situ impregnation strategy. The resulting MEL/PA-Ce 3+ @La FB exhibits exceptional flame retardancy. It achieves a V-0 rating in the vertical burning test (UL-94) and boasts a high limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 38.5 %. The coated FB exhibits superhydrophobicity, evidenced by a water contact angle of 156.5°, which can be attributed to the in-situ growth of PA-Ce 3+ complexes (for constructing micro/nanoscale coarse structures) and the modification with La (for reducing surface energy). This superhydrophobic surface imparts both self-cleaning and anti-mold properties to the coated FB. Moreover, the coated FB exhibits excellent mechanical stability, withstanding 36 cycles of sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling without losing its hydrophobicity. In summary, this work provides an innovative strategy for the bamboo processing industry to produce flattened bamboo boards with combined flame retardancy, superhydrophobic and anti-mold properties. Such versatility holds significant potential to facilitate the utilization of flattened bamboo boards in the construction and decorative materials industries.

Complexation copper with amine provides an effective strategy for fixation copper in wood, while hydrophobic modification improves the dimensional stability of wood. Thus, a combination of complexation and hydrophobization is expected to enhance the efficiency of copper-based biocides. In this study, hydrophobic hybrid silica gel containing copper amine complexes (MACu) was prepared through an in situ sol-gel process in wood using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and copper chloride. The resistance to growth of molds for MACu modified wood (Populus tomentosa) was measured according to ASTM D3273-16. A leaching resistance test was carried out in accordance with AWPA E11-16. The results showed that onlyAspergillus nigercovered the surface of untreated wood blocks and no mold grew on the MACu surface even after the leaching test. MACu xerogel and MACu wood were further characterized by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS. A possible schematic diagram of the reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the high-efficiency anti-mold performance of MACu wood.

Soy protein adhesives have great potential for development and have gradually become one of the research hot spots in recent years. However, the unmodified soy protein adhesives have many problems such as poor bonding performance and water resistance, high viscosity and easy to mildew, which affect their wide industrial application. In this study, soy protein adhesives were modified with borax and tannic acid to investigate the structural characteristics, physicochemical properties and mildew resistance of soy protein adhesives and to explore the strength mechanism of the modifier. Results showed that boron-oxygen reversible dynamic covalent, multiple hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions are formed between borax-tannic acid and soy protein isolate, and the synergistic effect of these multiple network structures improves the properties of soy protein adhesive. Therefore the dry and wet shear strength of the modified soy protein adhesive increased by 54 % and 45.8 % to 2.37 MPa and 1.115 MPa compared with unmodified soy protein adhesives. In addition, the anti-mildew performance of the liquid adhesives was extended from 2 d to more than 96 h. This research provides a simple and green method to improve the comprehensive properties of soy protein adhesive, and promotes the application of soy protein adhesive in wood industry.

To ensure the long-term fire-retardant (FR) and anti-mildew (AM) of bamboo materials when employed in outdoor settings susceptible to rainfall exposure, high durability is essential. In this study, we achieved water-leaching resistance of FR and AM bamboo through the in situ synthesis of phosphotungstic acid (PW) and silver nitrate (AG) via vacuum-pressure impregnation. The successful synthesis of the nanospheres within the bamboo (referred to as PWAG-B) was confirmed by TEM, FTIR, and XPS. These nanospheres remained intact within the bamboo cell wall after being subjected to a leaching test , with only a negligible mass loss of 0.88 % and virtually no traces of Ag and W in the leachate for PWAG-B 1 . Furthermore, the treated bamboo exhibited superior AM properties, with complete resistance against two types of mildew , namely Botryodiplodia theobromae and Alternaria alternate , as well as stain fungi including Aspergillus niger and Penicillum citrinum . Notably, the treated bamboo displayed reduced thermal and smoke parameters in comparison to untreated bamboo, along with a delayed ignition time . This long-term AM and FR bamboo has the potential for the development of eco-friendly outdoor building materials .

Bamboo with the outstanding properties, such as good mechanical strength, fast growth rate and low growth cost, is considered as one of utilitarian structural nature materials. But bamboo is easy to get mildewed resulting in disfiguration and fungi corrosion. In this work, a facile method was developed to improve the mildew-proofing capability of bamboo. Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) with biomimetic adhesion function and highly active functional groups was employed to immobilize highly-dispersed Ag and TiO 2 nanoparticles on the surface of bamboo via an in-situ growth method. Integrating the uniform PDA coating, photocatalytic function of TiO 2 nanoparticles and bactericidal role of Ag nanoparticles, the mildew-proofing capability of bamboo is enhanced significantly. The results show a non-covalent interaction is more likely to account for the binding mechanism of PDA to bamboo. And the prepared bamboo samples show good photocatalytic performance and have excellent resistance leachability. Meanwhile, the mildew-proofing property of prepared bamboo sample was greatly improved.

Biomass adhesives show great potential in developing environment-friendly wood-based panel industry. Among them, soybean protein isolate (SPI) adhesives have a wide source of raw materials, but exploring high-strength, water-resistant, mildew-proof soybean protein-based adhesives remains a tremendous challenge. Inspired by the spatial structure arrangement of spider silk in nature, a facile and efficient bionic approach is adopted to prepare soybean protein adhesive with excellent overall performance by introducing chitosan (CS) and MXene nanosheets in soybean protein. The addition of MXene nanosheets is expected to form the β-sheet crystalline conformation of spider silk, which contributes to the formation of a tightly cross-linked adhesive system that hinders the penetration of moisture. Compared with the 1-SPI adhesive, the prepared 5-SPI/CS/MXene adhesive shows an increase of 175% in wet shear strength (1.76 MPa), indicating excellent adhesion strength and water resistance. Besides, the addition of CS benefits to improve the dispersibility of MXene in the adhesive system. Therefore, the synergy of MXene and CS significantly improves the strength, water resistance of the adhesive and increases the storage time from 7 d to more than 50 d. This research would provide a new idea for the preparation of biomass-based adhesives.

Bamboo, attributed to its short growth cycle and excellent mechanical properties, has become a popular alternative to wood and other building materials such as cement and steel. However, its susceptibility to cracking and molds hinders its broad application in architecture and furniture. In this study, the bioresin polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA)-modified epoxy resin (EP)/polyetheramine (PEA) system was constructed and in situ cured inside bamboo. Results showed that the epoxy/PFA bioresin could fill in the vascular bundles and parenchyma cells of bamboo, in situ cured and combined with it via hydrogen bond to form a composite with good overall performance. Especially, the epoxy/PFA bioresin possessed good shape memory performance, which was able to counteract the dry shrinkage stress of bamboo. The three cycles of extreme heating–cooling tests and 6 h continuous drying test at 103 °C were conducted to verify the modification effect on crack resistance of bamboo. The PFA/EP/PEA-modified bamboo culms remained crack-free, while 75% of untreated ones cracked in heating–cooling tests. Besides, when all of the untreated bamboo culms cracked, only 33.3% of the PFA/EP/PEA-modified bamboo had cracks in the continuous drying test. Furthermore, the epoxy/PFA bioresin system in bamboo also improved the mold resistance. The bioresin composites comprising bamboo, epoxy, and PFA exhibit considerable potential for advancing the incorporation of bamboo into ecologically sustainable practices within the realms of construction and furniture applications. This advancement extends the lifespan of bamboo products as well as expands their application scope particularly in regions experiencing substantial fluctuations in outdoor humidity.

Plant protein-based adhesives are considered to be the most potential substitutes for petroleum-based adhesives in the wood panel industry, however, the poor water resistance and unsatisfactory mechanical performance limit their large-scale application. Moreover, the development of multifunctional plant protein-based adhesives with high strength, mildew proof, and flame-retardant remains a challenge. Plant fibers have been widely used as the reinforcing phase of polymers, but the smooth surface makes them easy to pull out of the matrix, which greatly reduced the strengthening effect. Herein, the phenylboronic acid-tethered hierarchical rough kenaf fibers were constructed to strengthen soy meal (SM) adhesives while imparting multifunction. The hierarchical rough structures and reactive groups on the surface of kenaf fibers made them form stronger mechanical interlocking and chemical crosslinking with SM matrix, coupled with the entanglement and interpenetration of the fibers with a high aspect ratio, which together endowed the SM adhesive with outstanding water-resistant bonding strength. The wet shear strength of the plywood prepared by the resultant SM adhesive increased by 391.7% to 1.18 MPa, which was far higher than the standard of 0.7 MPa for type II plywood (GB/T 9846-2015) in Chinese standards. Benefiting from the phenylboronic acid component, the resultant SM adhesive exhibited excellent mildew-proof and flame-retardant properties. This biomimetic design of kenaf fibers provides a facile and efficient strategy to develop high-performance and multifunctional bio-adhesives. Graphical Abstract

Biobased adhesives play a pivotal role in the development of eco-friendly wood products, and phytogenic protein as a biobased material preparation adhesive has the advantages of sustainable development and green environmental protection. Current researches focus and challenge lie in developing phytogenic protein adhesives that do not emit formaldehyde and possess high water-resistant bonding strength and anti-mold properties through the use of biobased cross-linkers instead of chemical cross-linkers. In this study, lignin, a natural polymer material, was used as raw material to fabricate a novel crosslinker, and a cross-linking network structure was constructed with lignin as the cross-linking core and multiple bonding effects of hydrogen and chemical bonds. In addition, lignin-based crosslinker was prepared to replace the chemical crosslinker while successfully activating lignin to improve the crosslinking degree between lignin and the protein matrix. This study addressed environmental pollution and cost issues associated with the extensive use of chemical cross-linkers in phytogenic protein adhesives. The water-resistant bonding strength of the prepared phytogenic protein adhesive reached 1.21 MPa, and the mechanical properties of the prepared phytogenic protein adhesive were increased by 188 % compared with the ordinary phytogenic protein adhesive and exhibited effective anti-mold properties. This research provided a novel approach for creating sustainable, environmentally friendly adhesives and held significant implications for producing industrial wood-based panels.

Bamboo is a sustainable structural material with excellent mechanical properties, but its high flammability and hygroscopicity restrict industrial utilization. This study develops a synergistic dual-modification approach using sodium silicate mineralization and hydrophobic treatment to enhance flame retardancy, mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and mold resistance. Compared to untreated bamboo, the modified bamboo exhibited 50.9%, 21.0%, 64.1%, and 16.7% reductions in peak heat release rate, total heat release, peak smoke production rate, and total smoke release, respectively. The Limiting Oxygen Index reached 36.0% with a Fire Performance Index of 1.4. Hydrophobic treatment reduced water absorption by 84.5% and thickness swelling by 52.2% (longitudinal), 52.0% (radial), and 57.6% (tangential), achieving a 147° water contact angle. Mechanical properties improved significantly, with modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture increasing by 15.3% and 9.2%, respectively. Mold growth was completely inhibited under high humidity conditions. This strategy overcomes key limitations of bamboo in flammability, moisture sensitivity, and mechanical performance while preserving sustainability, thereby demonstrating significant potential for fire-safe construction and engineered biocomposites.

Soy protein based adhesives showed great potential for replacing petroleum derived formaldehyde adhesives in the commercial wood industry. However, soy protein adhesives have several problematic limitations, particularly with respect to low water and mildew resistence. As such, in order for soy protein-based adhesives to be practically applicable on an industrial level, a multi-function bio-based crosslinker that resolves both low water and mildew resistance must be designed. In this study, we synthesized a multifunctional crosslink agent (DDE) by reacting soybean-derived daidzein with epichlorohydrin (ECH) and incorporating it into soy protein to parpare a 100% bio wood adhesive with significantly improved water and mildew resistances. The results showed that by using 6 wt% DDE in the adhesive formulation, the dry and wet shear strength of plywood bonded with the SPI/DDE adhesive increased by 52.3% and 164.4%, respectively, compared with that of SPI adhesive; and was shown to be 22.3% and 69.6% higher than that of the industrially used SPI/PAE adhesive. These improvements were attributed to formation of double cross-linked network and elevated adhesive toughness. Furthermore, the resultant adhesive’s mildew resistance property were also improved with the addition of DDE, which extended the shelf life of adhesive and durability of the resultant plywood. Thus, this resultant DDE can be used to improve the mechanical properties and mildew resistance for bio-hydrogels or bio-based composites and polymers.

Applications of eco-friendly soy protein (SP) adhesives in the wood industry are restricted by their poor wet bonding strength and mold resistance. In this study, we noted that epoxy crosslinking agents not only have cross-linking properties, but also antifungal properties and can be used as cross-linkable antifungal agents to simultaneously improve the mold resistance and strength of SP adhesives. In order to develop sustainable and highly active epoxy cross-linkable antifungal agents, biomass-derived oxalic acid (OA) was converted into epoxy oxalic acid (EOA) with two electron-withdrawing ester groups, with 99.93% antifungal activity. The 1% ultra-low amount of EOA (when used as crosslinking agent) was uniformly dispersed in the uncured adhesive, prompting the anti-mold life of the adhesive to increase from 2 to 26 days. After curing, the tighter and more stable cross-linked network structure of the adhesive was constructed by the reaction of low reactive groups such as amide II bonds with ultra-low amounts of EOA, and the dry and wet shear strengths were increased by 49.0% and 139.7%, respectively, compared with pure adhesives. In addition, the anti-mold life of the cured adhesive increased from 4 to more than 30 days under the action of residual EOA. This work demonstrates the novel antifungal effect of epoxy crosslinkers , providing a controllable, green, and sustainable idea for the high-efficient improvement of mold resistance and strength of bio-based adhesives.
