Guiding Ambient Vapor to Condense at the Fixed Pattern on Micronano Hierarchically Aluminum Substrate for Antifrost Application

Guiyuan Cui,Huilin Yin,Wenting Zhou,Chuncheng Yang,Zhengzheng Xu,Guoyong Wang

Vapor spontaneously diffuses from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration as a consequence of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and the hunt for maximum entropy. The distribution of substances with lower saturated vapor pressures on a surface can create this concentration slope in the space. However, most substances, except ice, cannot maintain this slope because humidity sinking causes their saturated vapor pressure to drop. Moreover, the location of ice growth is difficult to control. In this paper, a pattern of CaCl2 was made on the micronano hierarchically aluminum substrate. When the temperature drops below zero, the vapor pressure at the position where CaCl2 is located is low relative to that of water as a way to achieve a continuous phase transition from solid CaCl2 to brine to ice. Thus, vapor nearby continuously diffuses to and deposits at the site, resulting in a lasting dry region around without water condensation. The frost growing on the pattern is also fluffy and can be easily removed by gravity and/or wind. This work has promising applications in areas where it is extremely difficult to use active deicing methods.

Enhancement of Condensation Heat Transfer, Anti-Frosting and Water Harvesting by Hybrid Wettability Coating

Xintao Chen,Xian Wu,Fang Li,Xiaofeng Zhao,Shanlin Wang

Hydrophilic–hydrophobic hybrid wettability structures, inspired by desert beetles, have been widely designed to enhance the dewdrops’ migration under subcooled or/and high-humidity environment. However, it is still a challenge to regulate the graded distribution of the hydrophilic micro-regions for condensation applications. In this paper, we design a simple spray method to prepare the superamphiphilic–superamphiphobic hybrid wettability coatings by controlling the mass ratio (MR) of superamphiphobic SiO 2 nano-powder and superamphiphilic gypsum micro-powder. We compare the macroscopical wettability, condensation heat transfer efficiency, frosting delayed time and water harvesting rate to demonstrate the unique advantage of hybrid wettability structures. The results show that the condensation heat transfer efficiency, frosting delayed time and water harvesting rate can be respectively promoted to about 131.50% ( MR = 1 : 0 . 5 ) , 134.74% ( MR = 1 : 0 . 5 ) and 135.62% ( MR = 1 : 1 ) , although their macroscopical wettability will gradually reduce with the MR increase. This work will provide substantial insights into the fabrication of efficient superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic hybrid wettability surfaces for condensation heat transfer, anti-frosting and water harvesting applications.

Towards Large-Scale Fabrication of Self-Healable Functional Hydrogel Coatings for Anti-Fog/Frost Surfaces and Flexible Sensors

Yonggan Yan,Jiuyu Cui,Xiaoyong Qiu,Hanlian Liu,Xiang Liu,Peng Yao,Jun Huang,Xin Cui,Xiubing Liang,Chuanzhen Huang

Hydrogel coatings have drawn substantial research interest owing to their great potential in developing advanced flexible devices. However, most of them cannot meet the requirement of large-scale application on diverse substrates and would lose their functionalities under harsh conditions. In this work, a large-scale and surface-independent multifunctional hydrogel coating is developed by directly painting and ultraviolet curing hybrid hydrogel precursor containing acrylamide (AM), branched polyethylenimine (PEI), CaCl 2 , and glycerol. Such a coating shows superior anti-fog and anti-frost properties owing to the hydrophilic nature and freezing-tolerance of the hydrogel. Besides, the hydrogel coating possesses excellent self-healing performance at both macro- and micro- scales because of the dynamic hydrogen bonds prevailing between the polymer chains in a gel network. Moreover, this hydrogel coating also exhibits electric conductivity due to the mobile ions present in the gel network. By patterning the hydrogel coating onto an elastic substrate, a foldable tape sensor is fabricated which can sensitively distinguish short-time click (≈0.1–0.2 s) from long-time press (≈1–2 s) and detect electrical signals corresponding to cyclic bending deformation. This work provides practical demonstration of hydrogel coatings for engineering applications where anti-fog, anti-frosting, self-healing, and electrically conductive properties are needed.

Fabrication of a superhydrophobic micron-nanoscale hierarchical structured surface for delayed icing and reduced frosting

Yiming Jian,Hongtao Gao,Yuying Yan

Multifunctional superhydrophobic surfaces with dual-scale hierarchical structures have drawn considerable interest in real-world applications. The complicated fabricating process, higher costs, and poor durability limit the widespread utilization of bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces. Herein, we use an effective method to create a micron-nanoscale (dual-scale) hierarchical structure, which is composed of a micron-scaled rough structure constructed by a chemical-etching process and a secondary nanostructure obtained by hydrophobic nano silica (SiO 2 ) modification. The micron-nanoscale hierarchical structured surface has superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 161.5°±1.9°. Compared with the micron-scaled rough structure surface, the manufactured micron-nanoscale hierarchical structured surface presented excellent anti-icing properties with a freezing delay time of 5013.6 s at -15 °C. The frost layer on the micron-nanoscale hierarchical structured surface can be rapidly melted to transform into some isolated water droplets in about 7 s due to its ultra-low water adhesion force. Additionally, the prepared superhydrophobic micron-nanoscale hierarchical structured surface has chemical stability and mechanical durability except for the delayed icing and reduced frosting performance. The construction of a micron-nanoscale hierarchical structure is expected to expand superhydrophobic surface applications in anti-icing, anti-frosting, and self-cleaning.

Photothermal responsive slippery surfaces based on laser-structured graphene@PVDF composites

Zhi-Zhen Jiao,Hao Zhou,Xing-Chen Han,Dong-Dong Han,Yong-Lai Zhang

Photothermal responsive slippery surfaces with switchable superwettability are promising in the fields of biomedicine, self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, and lab-on-a-chip systems. However, the development of a light switchable slippery surface that combines high-performance photothermal materials with hierarchical microstructures of special orientation remains challenging, which limits the applications in anisotropic droplet manipulation . Herein, we demonstrate a photothermal responsive slippery surface based on laser-structured graphene and polyvinylidene difluoride composites (L-G@PVDF) for controllable droplet manipulation. The L-G@PVDF film exhibits high light absorption (∼95.4%) in the visible and NIR region. After lubricating with paraffin, the resultant surface shows excellent self-healing ability and light-responsive wettability change due to the photothermal effect of L-G@PVDF and the hot melting effect of paraffin. Additionally, by introducing anisotropic grooved structures, the paraffin-infused L-G@PVDF surface displays anisotropic wettability that further affects droplet manipulation under light irradiation . Also, the photothermal responsive slippery property endows the paraffin-infused L-G@PVDF surface with excellent anti-frosting and de-icing capability. Moreover, the smart paraffin-infused L-G@PVDF surface can be combined with a microfluidics chip for light-driven automatic sampling. This study offers insight into the rational design of photothermal responsive slippery surfaces for controllable droplet manipulation.

A novel durable anti-icing slippery surfaces with dendritic porous structure

Huiying Xiang,Yuan Yuan,Tao Zhu,Xu Dai,Cheng Zhang,Yu Gai,Ruijin Liao

In recent years, the lubricant depletion in slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has been widely concerned, which limits its application in anti-icing. The lubricant stability is determined by three main factors including lubricant storage, depletion, and self-healing rate after depletion. However, many studies only consider one or two factors and there is a lack of systematic research on the anti-icing durability of the improved SLIPS. Herein, considering the “storage-depletion-healing” of the lubricant, a dendritic porous structure was fabricated, and the pore depth ratio and surface porosity were optimized. Additionally, the anti-icing durability of the dendritic slippery surface (Y-SLIPS) was investigated. The results show that the optimal pore depth ratio (upper pore to lower pore) and surface porosity are 1:2 and 66%, respectively. Compared to the traditional slippery surface (I-SLIPS), the Y-SLIPS has better anti-icing durability in frost and icing environment. The Y-SLIPS exceeds 20 kPa at the 140th frosting/defrosting cycle, while the I-SLIPS reaches this value at the 100th cycle. When maintaining extremely low ice-adhesion strength, the Y-SLIPS can withstand 190 icing/deicing cycles, far more than that of the I-SLIPS. The optimal dendritic porous structure further improves the anti-icing durability of the slippery surfaces, which lays the foundation for its anti-icing application.

Rapid surface texturing to achieve robust superhydrophobicity, controllable droplet impact, and anti-frosting performances

Dai Qingwen,Chen Lei,Pan Jiabao,Shi Liping,Liu Dameng,Huang Wei,Wang Xiaolei

Robust superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent capacities of repelling water and anti-frosting are of importance for many mechanical components. In this work, wear-resistant superhydrophobic surfaces were fabricated by curing a mixture of polyurethane acrylate (PUA) coating and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (HFTCS) on titanium alloy (TC4) surfaces decorated with micropillars pattern, thus, composite functional surfaces with PUA coating in the valleys around the micropillars pattern of TC4 were achieved. Apparent contact angle on fabricated surfaces could reach 167°. Influences of the geometric parameters of micropillars pattern on the apparent contact angle were investigated, and the corresponding wear-resistant property was compared. Droplet impact and anti-frosting performances on the prepared surfaces were highlighted. An optimized design of surface texture with robust superhydrophobicity, controllable droplet impact, and anti-frosting performances was proposed. This design principle is of promising prospects for fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces in traditional mechanical systems.

A facile antifogging/frost-resistant coating with self-healing ability

Wei Wang,Pengpeng Lu,Yong Fan,Limei Tian,Shichao Niu,Jie Zhao,Luquan Ren

Although many antifogging surfaces have been successfully developed, constructing a surface with both antifogging and frost resistance properties is still a great challenge since the condensed water inevitably turns into an ice layer under freezing conditions. Herein, an antifogging/frost-resistant polymeric coating consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) and salicylic acid is developed on the basis of a hydrogen bond cross-linking strategy. Unlike conventional superhydrophilic antifogging surfaces, the excellent antifogging/frost resistance performance over a broad range of temperatures ( ca. −196.6 to 85 °C), is ascribed to the water-absorbing capability of the coating. Moreover, the coating also exhibits efficient self-healing properties in a wet environment. Due to its simplicity and efficiency, this type of coating may serve as an excellent antifogging/frost-resistant platform for a broad range of applications in optics-related areas.

Investigation on self-healing, anti-fogging and anti-frosting performances of silica sol modified waterborne polyurethane coatings

Yuxin Cheng,Liming Tang,Xiaohui Fu

In this study, a series of silica sol modified polyurethane composite emulsions were fabricated via incorporating silica sol precursor into anionic silanol-terminated polyurethane emulsion, which was obtained via three steps, including (1) reacting excess hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) with polybutylene glycol (PBG), 2,2-dimethylhydroxypropionic acid (DMPA), bis(2-hydroxyethyl) disulfide (HEDS) in a stepwise process using dibutyltin diacetate (DBTA) as the catalyst, (2) neutralizing the resulting prepolymer with triethylamine and end-capping with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and (3) dispersing the resulting silanol-terminated polyurethane in water under stirring. The reaction products were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, hydrogen proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and permeation gel chromatography (GPC). The swelling degree and gel content analysis confirmed the formation of crosslinking network in the composite coatings formed after drying the composite emulsions. The self-healing performances of the coatings were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile mechanical tests, and the anti-fogging and anti-frosting behaviors of the composite coatings were analyzed by UV–visible spectroscopy, reflectance spectroscopy, water contact angle test and optical photometry. Based on the measurements, the self-healing process, the anti-fogging and anti-frosting mechanism were discussed. At suitable amount of HEDS, this coating exhibited excellent self-healing performances with the self-healing efficiency up to 95.9 % because of the high moving ability of the chains. After self-healing, these coatings displayed the same anti-fogging and anti-frosting properties as those before self-healing. The silica sol component was found to increasing both the polar groups and crosslinking degree, endowing the composite coating with durable anti-fogging and anti-frosting properties.

Fast UV-Curable Zwitter-Wettable Coatings with Reliable Antifogging/Frost-Resisting Performances

Hao Zhong,Xiaoxiao Liu,Boxin Yu,Shengzhu Zhou

Antifogging surfaces with unique properties to migrate severe fog formation have gained extensive interest, which is of particular interest for transparent substrates to obtain high visibility and transparency. To date, a large number of strategies including superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic surfaces and titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based composite coatings have been developed based on different mechanisms. Although these surfaces exhibit effective antifogging properties, the rigid nanostructures, cumbersome preparation, and the need for UV light excitation largely limit their widespread applications. Herein, we report a zwitter-wettable antifogging and frost-resisting coating through a fast UV-curable cross-linking of copolymer with benzophenone groups. A series of random copolymers consisting of hydrophilic hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEA), hydrophobic methyl methacrylate (MMA), and benzophenone-based acrylate units are developed by thermally triggered free-radical polymerization. Upon UV light irradiation, a highly efficient antifogging/frost-resisting coating is covalently bonded on a polycarbonate plate surface, maintaining a light transmission higher than 85%, which was confirmed in both high and low temperature anti-fog tests. Moreover, the wetting behaviors reveal that the antifogging performance exhibited by the zwitter-wettable surface mainly relies on its surface water-adsorbing capability to imbibe condensed water vapor on the surface outmost layer. Notably, the antifogging/frost-resisting behaviors can be well regulated by adjusting the hydrophilic/hydrophobic units, due to the proper balance between the water-adsorption and coating stability. Owing to its simplicity, low-cost preparation and high efficiency, this UV-curable acrylate antifogging coating may find a wide range of applications in various display devices in analytical and detection instruments.Keywords:antifogging;frost-resisting;zwitter-wettable;UV illumination;acrylate coating

Fluorine-Free and Transparent Superhydrophobic Coating with Enhanced Anti-Icing and Anti-Frosting Performance by Using D26 and KH560 as Coupling Agents

Ting Xiao,Yudian Wang,Xia Lang,Siyu Chen,Lihua Jiang,Fujun Tao,Yequan Xiao,Xinyi Li,Xinyu Tan

Superhydrophobic surfaces with non-wetting characteristics have been considered to be potential candidates for ice/frost prevention. In this study, a transparent superhydrophobic coating was created by using a simple method that employed (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (KH560) and 1,2-Bis (trimethoxysilyl) ethane (D26) as coupling agents and epoxy resin (E51) as an adhesive. The synergy between KH560 and D26 significantly improves the long-term outdoor durability, anti-icing, and anti-frosting performance of the superhydrophobic coating. The coating also has good acid and alkali resistance, UV resistance, and durability. The obtained SiO2@E51@KH560@D26 can delay the freezing time of water by 1974 s, much longer than bare glass (345 s) and also longer than the coatings with only D26 (932 s) or with only KH560 (1087 s). Moreover, the SiO2@E51@KH560@D26 showed an improved anti-frosting capability compared with the other three samples and better maintained its superhydrophobic properties at low temperatures. Our study proposes a potential method to fabricate a superhydrophobic coating with both anti-icing and anti-frosting properties.

Renewable Plant Oil-Based Polysiloxane Coatings with Efficient Frost Resistance and Anti-Icing Properties

Guangyu Zhu,Yuting Tian,Jiang Wu,Guang Yang,Zan Hua

Frost-resistant and anti-icing polymeric coatings are widely used for various industries for the extremely low temperatures that often appear in winter. Among different icephobic materials, nontoxic fluorine-free polysiloxanes with a low surface energy present tremendous potential to be utilized as passive icephobic coatings. However, conventional polysiloxanes from limited petroleum-based feedstocks potentially lead to serious resource crisis and environmental concerns. In this work, renewable plant oil-based polysiloxanes were prepared and exploited as passive frost-resistant and anti-icing materials. Renewable plant oil-based diene monomers were polymerized with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane through highly efficient hydrosilylation reactions to yield polysiloxanes. The optimized polysiloxane coating is efficient for the removal of the accumulated ice/frost by natural forces such as wind blowing and gravity. The icephobic coating has an ice adhesion strength as low as 84.8 kPa, presenting great potential for efficient anti-icing and frost-resistant applications. The eminent passive anti-icing and frost resistance properties of the renewable plant oil-based polysiloxane coating could be attributed to its combination of low crystallinity and high chain mobility. The development of biomass-based polysiloxanes offers us an efficient route to access high value-added passive frost-resistant and anti-icing coatings.
