Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been studied to improve conductivity for their high performance. The functional groups with positive charge could construct ion channels, which is the significant factor in determining the anions conductivity through the membrane. This report demonstrates the use of a new 2D nanomaterial as filler used in the quaterized polysulfone (QPSU) matrix for composite membrane performance enhancement of alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs). Ti 3 C 2 T x is functionalized with quaternary ammonium groups successfully etched by NH 4 HF 2 . The two kinds Ti 3 C 2 T x are synthesized and incorporated into QPSU based membranes by using a solution blending method. The QPSU/NH 4 HF 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x composite membrane exhibits the hydroxide ionic conductivity nearly 2 times higher than that both of pristine QPSU and QPSU/LiF-Ti 3 C 2 T x membranes among 20–60 °C, and leads to substantial increase in peak power density of AAEMFCs by ~ 30% at 60 °C. The results indicate NH 4 + groups on the MXene surface further enhance the OH - conductivity. Furthermore, the QPSU membranes addition with two kinds Ti 3 C 2 T x both exhibit good mechanical property and thermal stability, and hold promise for application in AAEMFCs.

The gas diffusion layer (GDL) enhances the transport efficiency of reaction gases and facilitates the removal of accumulated liquid water, thereby improving water management in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are recognized as one of the promising materials to optimize mass transport within GDLs. In this study, we successfully synthesized an abundance of CNTs on the surface of commercial gas diffusion media. The as-prepared CNT layer exhibits exceptionally high hydrophobic properties and forms a hierarchically hydrophobic structure combined with the gas diffusion media, effectively enhancing the mass transfer of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and reducing ohmic impedance. Under supersaturation conditions, the power density of the MEA containing CNTs reaches 1031.7 mW/cm 2 , significantly higher than the 760.64 mW/cm 2 observed for the commercial GDL. Further testing demonstrates that the MEA containing CNTs exhibits a limiting current density of 2507.4 mA/cm 2 , which is much superior to the benchmark MEA with the commercial GDL (1591 mA/cm 2 ). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis reveals that the mass transfer resistance of MEAs with CNTs is lower than that of MEAs with the commercial GDL. More importantly, the phase-field modeling is performed to simulate the transport of the liquid water in the hierarchical GDL.

Water management has been proven significant for enhancing both performance and durability of anion exchange membrane fuel cell. Besides searching new material, decreasing membrane thickness and modifying operation parameters, a simple and universal method of altering membrane structure is proposed in this work. Composite membranes made by unique processing method that includes both casting and electrospinning processes were compared with traditional casting membrane, all with the same thickness of 40 µm. Comparing to traditional casting membrane, the composite membrane put at proper position shows a higher water permeability, thus even more than 50% enhancement of the peak performance.

A novel microporous anion exchange membrane containing a spirobiindane segment and cardo moiety is successfully synthesized through superacid-catalyzed Friedel–Crafts-type polymerization. The developed polymer showed good solubility in common polar aprotic solvent and exhibited excellent ionic conductivity (163 mS cm–1 at 80 °C). A series of poly(spirobiindane-aryl ether sulfone) copolymers P(SBI/AES)-X with variable SBI/AES molar ratios were synthesized, and each copolymer exposed different free volumes that increases by increasing the content of spirobiindane in the copolymers. In turn, this free volume of copolymer causes the construction of well-developed ion channels in the developed anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The resulting QP(SBI/AES)-0.5 AEM, with an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.59 mmol g–1, exhibited a high hydroxide conductivity of 110 mS cm–1 at 80 °C as well as good mechanical robustness. The peak power density achieved using a single cell fuel cell test is 593 mW cm–2. The results depicted the excellent potential of the resultant microporous anion exchange membrane in the progress of anion exchange membrane fuel cells.

Understanding the complex solvent effects on the microstructures of ink and catalyst layer (CL) is crucial for the development of high-performance anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, we study the solvent effects within the binary solvent ink system composed of water, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), commercial anion exchange ionomer, and Pt/C catalyst. The results show that the Pt/C particles and ionomer tend to form large aggregates wrapped with a thick ionomer layer in IPA-rich ink and promote the formation of large mesopores within the CL. With the increase of the water content in the ink, Pt/C particles are more likely to bridge to each other through wrapped FAA to form a well-connected three-dimensional network. The CL fabricated using water-rich ink shows smaller pores, higher porosity, and a more homogeneous ionomer network without the formation of large aggregates. Based on these results, we propose that the properties of the solvent mixture, including dielectric constant (ε) and solubility parameter (δ), affect the coulomb interaction of charged particles and surface tension at interfaces, which in turn affects the microstructure of ink and CL. By leveraging the solvent effects, we optimize the CL microstructures and improve the performance of AEMFC. These results may guide the rational design and fabrication of AEMFCs.

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have emerged as a promising clean energy technology due to their high efficiency and the potential to eliminate the reliance on precious metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. Developing highly efficient nonprecious metal catalysts is crucial for enhancing AEMFC performance. In this study, we report a Co–S–N–C@MXene catalyst through sulfur doping and support loading. This catalyst demonstrates exceptional ORR activity, achieving a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.881 V. After 10,000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV) testing, the E1/2 showed a minimal decline of only 14 mV, demonstrating excellent durability. Moreover, the AEMFC based on the catalyst achieved a peak power density of 466 mW cm–2.

The ionomer binder is crucial for the preparation of homogeneous catalyst layers for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). However, the dense stacking of the ionomer on the catalyst surface results in large resistance to gas (especially O2) penetration in the three-phase boundary (TPB). Here, an in situ UV-driven gas “expressway” for the catalyst layer of AEMFCs was prepared by a rigid anthracene-based cross-linkable ionomer. The gas permeability of the catalyst layer was increased by 130% after crosslinking due to the high free volume between the ionomer chain segments. Meanwhile, the electrochemical and identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) characterizations showed that the crosslinked ionomer binders played an anchoring role for the catalyst particles. The performance of an H2/O2 AEMFC (based on commercialized FAA-3-50 membranes) containing the crosslinked ionomer is much better than that of the uncrosslinked PPOAN ionomer. The in situ UV-driven crosslinking strategy of catalyst layers provides new insights into the preparation of homogeneous mesoscopic structures for the catalyst particles. More importantly, the rigid anthracene-based crosslinked structure constructs microscopic gas channels in the ionomer–catalyst interface, which has been overlooked in previous work.

Ruthenium (Ru) is a more cost-effective alternative to platinum anode catalysts for alkaline anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), but suffers from severe competitive adsorption of hydrogen (H ad ) and hydroxyl (OH ad ). To address this concern, a strongly coupled multisite electrocatalyst with highly active cluster-scale ruthenium-tungsten oxide (Ru-WO x ) interface, which could eliminate the competitive adsorption phenomenon and achieve high coverage of OH ad and H ad at Ru and WO x domains, respectively, is designed. The experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that WO x domain functions as a proton sponge to perpetually accommodate the activated hydrogen species that spillover from the adjacent Ru domain, and the resulting WO-H ad species are readily coupled with Ru-OH ad at the heterointerface to finish the hydrogen oxidation reaction with faster kinetics via the thermodynamically favorable Tafel-Volmer mechanism. The AEMFC delivers a high peak power density of 1.36 W cm −2 with a low anode catalyst loading of 0.05 mg Ru cm −2 and outstanding durability (negligible voltage decay over 80-h operation at 500 mA cm −2 ). This work offers completely new insights into understanding the alkaline HOR mechanism and designing advanced anode catalysts for AEMFCs.

As one of the most crucial components, the catalyst layer (CL) plays a critical role in the performance of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). However, the effect of the structural evolution of ionomer binder on the micromorphology and catalytic activity of CL is yet to be clarified. In this study, pyrrolidinum and quaternary ammonium cations are attached to the polyphenylene oxide (PPO) backbone through flexible spacer units (five, seven, or nine carbon atoms) with different terminal alkyl groups. The Van der Waals force and electrostatic repulsion between the ionomer binder and catalyst are regulated through the flexible spacer units and terminal alkyl groups to alleviate the agglomeration of catalyst particles and acquire a high catalytic activity. To evaluate the electrochemical stability of the cationic groups, the alkaline stability of the ionomer binder is tested under a constant voltage to simulate the true operational environment of the fuel cells. The results reveal that the degradation of the cation groups of ionomer binder is accelerated under a constant voltage condition. This phenomenon in neglect earlier, may serve as a useful reference for the synthesis and performance enhancement of ionomer binders.

Developing a low-price, high catalytic activity, and strong durability electrocatalyst for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is significantly important for anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC). Herein, Co and Mn salts were added into ZIF-8 to obtain CoMn-ZIF-Ac-2. Co and Mn embedded in nitrogen-doped microporous carbon (CoMn-N-C-Ac-2-Ts, , 800, 900, and 1000°C) were obtained by carbonizing CoMn-ZIF-Ac-2 at various temperature. The influence of various pyrolysis temperature and molar ratios between Co and Mn toward ORR catalytic activity was researched. For CoMn-N-C-Ac-2-Ts, CoMn-N-C-Ac-2-800 had the highest ORR catalytic activity with the half-wave potential of 0.875 V in 0.1 M KOH, only 5 mV lower than that of 20 wt % Pt/C. Besides, high 4e- selectivity, excellent stability (retaining 100% for 20 h at 0.6 V vs. RHE), and methanol tolerance are also exhibited. In addition, CoMn-N-C-Ac-2-800 exhibited better ORR activity than Mn-N-C-Ac-800 and Co-N-C-Ac-800, which was attributed to more Co-N4, more MnIII species, and higher surface area. Moreover, the AEMFC based on the CoMn-N-C-Ac-2-800 cathode catalyst obtained a maximal power density of 291 mW·cm-2, which was 78% of the achieved with 20 wt % Pt/C (375 mW·cm-2). The highest ORR performance for CoMn-N-C-Ac-2-800 was contributed by the highest defect degree, the most amounts of Co/Mn-N4 active site, the maximum BET surface area, and micropore structure.

Technologies based on anion exchange membranes (AEMs), including fuel cells (AEMFCs) and water electrolysis (AEMWE), offer strong potential due to their use of non-precious metal catalysts and fluorine-free polyelectrolytes. However, CO 2 in cathode air causes severe voltage loss (“carbonation”), restricting large-scale AEMFC deployment. Using multiple operando techniques, this study elucidates the carbonation-induced degradation mechanism. Combined operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis reveal that carbonation elevates mass transport polarization resistance by over two orders of magnitude, dominating voltage loss. Operando EIS and anode CO 2 outlet monitoring show this effect arises not from reduced membrane conductivity, but from CO 3 2− enrichment in the anode catalyst layer ionomer via the CO 2 –CO 3 2- equilibrium. AEMFC operation follows mass conservation: CO 3 2− and OH − migrate simultaneously to the anode and participate in the hydrogen oxidation reaction in ratios determined at the cathode. In-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) reveal carbonation forms a thickened electric double layer (EDL) at the electrode/polyelectrolyte interface, weakening interfacial electric fields and hindering CO 3 2− transport. Modulating anode ionomer ion exchange capacity (IEC) reduces both mass transport resistance and voltage loss, experimentally validating the mechanism and advancing understanding of EDL dynamics in AEMFCs.

The design of materials that efficiently catalyse the electrochemical reaction of molecular oxygen to hydroxide ions is key to the development of electrochemical devices. Here we demonstrate an approach to control the orbital hybridization of 3 d and 4 d /5 d metals to tune the adsorption strength and stabilize the catalytic sites in the platinum-free catalysts Li 2 Mn 1− x Ru x O 3 . We show that in these materials, the stabilization of O 2 p holes by changing the M–O covalency (M = 4 d /5 d metal) can help to mitigate structural instability. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the Mn and Ru atoms are the active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and exhibit a high ORR activity with noteworthy stability compared with the Pt/C catalyst and outperform NiFe layered double hydroxides and RuO 2 in the oxygen evolution reaction. Notably, Li 2 Mn 0.85 Ru 0.15 O 3 shows a high power density of 1.2 W cm −2 and current density of 1.2 A cm −2 at 1.9 V in the anion exchange membrane fuel cell and water electrolyser, respectively.
