Vibration Damping and Noise Reduction of a New Non-Newtonian Fluid Damper in a Washing Machine

Yuanjin Song,Zhong Zhuang,Xianping Wang,Qianfeng Fang,Zhijun Cheng,Tao Zhang

Due to friction vibration dampers’ inability to effectively dampen low loads during high-frequency dewatering, drum washing machines vibrated intensively. In order to address this problem, in this paper, a novel type of low-cost non-Newtonian fluid damper is proposed and investigated based on the non-Newtonian fluid shear thinning properties’ effect on vibration suppression during the high-frequency dewatering process of the washing machine. In contrast to other commonly used dampers, the homemade non-Newtonian fluid damper significantly suppresses the growth trend of the apparent elastic coefficient at high frequencies. A systematic investigation of damper structural parameters reveals that smaller gap height, higher piston head number, and more viscous fluid viscosity are adequate for vibration suppression and noise reduction. These results demonstrate that the non-Newtonian fluid damper can produce an excellent vibration-damping effect for the entire washing process of the washing machine, especially for the high-frequency dewatering process. The acceleration attenuation ratio can reach up to 83.49%, the energy attenuation is up to 98.44%, and the noise reduction is up to 10.38 dB.Keywords:vibration damping;non-Newtonian fluid;noise reduction

A novel noise-reducing and anti-corrosion polyurethane elastomer coating material modified by MXene / porous TiO2

Xu Yuan,Wei Wang,Cuiting Du,Qianqian Kang,Zhipeng Mao,Shougang Chen

The present study reports on a composite coating exhibiting noise reduction and anti-corrosion properties. We successfully synthesized a Ti 3 C 2 T x @TiO 2 -PDA composite filler that involves growing porous TiO 2 onto lamellar MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x) material and further coating both surfaces with a layer of polydopamine (PDA) material, providing the coating material with a micro-cavity structure to enhance its ability to dissipate acoustic energy and resist corrosion. And we incorporated it into the prepared disulfide bond-modified polyurethane coating matrix. Experimental tests and finite element analysis demonstrate that the coating can reduce environmental noise by approximately 33% while maintaining a maximum impedance modulus |Z| of 5.51 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 after immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 25 days. The porous structure of the composite filler provides micro-cavities within the coating, while its lamellar structure acts as a physical barrier against corrosive media. Furthermore, introducing disulfide bonds enhances acoustic energy dissipation within the coating. Consequently, this coating exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance and noise reduction performance, presenting significant potential for applications in marine equipment's noise reduction and corrosion prevention.

Superior broadband sound absorption in hydrophobicity and mechanical enhancing Poly(urethane-imide)/Melamine aerogels via ambient drying

Enyuan Hu,Yingwen Zhu,Haiyun Li,Cheng Deng,Bo Cui,Lei Zhao,Jinhui Wu,Xinmiao Wang,Mengfu Zhu

Noise pollution has been recognized as having negative impacts on human psychological and physiological health. Common porous sound-absorbing materials are often limited by low sound absorption coefficient (SAC), excessive thickness, and poor moisture resistance or mechanical properties. Herein, poly(urethane-imide) and melamine foam (MF) were successfully combined for the first time using hydrothermal synthesis and ambient drying to fabricate a poly(urethane-imide)/melamine (PUI/MA) aerogel with a multi-stage pore structure and a core–shell framework. The introduction of PUI reduces pore size and increases tortuosity, thereby enhancing thermal and viscous losses of sound waves. Compared to unmodified MF, the noise reduction coefficient of PUI/MA aerogel achieves an 80 % improvement. Furthermore, numerical microstructural modeling calculations show that the JCA model’s predictions are more consistent with the SACs of PUI/MA aerogels. In addition to significantly improving SAC, the core–shell structure endows the composite aerogels with a compressive Young’s modulus up to 30 times that of MF, a water contact angle over 120°, and a thermal conductivity of less than 60 mW/m/K at 150 °C. The facile and cost-effective fabrication process, superior broadband sound absorption, and excellent fundamental properties suggest that PUI/MA aerogel is a promising candidate for noise mitigation in residential, rail transport, and industrial applications.

Shubing Zhu,Xiaoning Tang

With the rapid development of industrialization and population surge in modern society, noise pollution has been considered as a serious threat to human beings. In order to effectively reduce noise, the application of sound absorbing textile materials has gradually increased, also the rapid development of acoustic coating consists of conventional fiber layers and polymers. In this work, the surface morphology, micro-structure and sound absorption properties of polyvinyl alcohol coated fabric and its composites were studied. It was found that the addition of nano-TiO 2 particles can obviously improve the sound absorption properties, and the absorption coefficient is related to fabric thickness. Furthermore, the surface of the coated fabric was compounded with melt-blown nonwoven fabric, thus to fabricate composite sound absorber. This work indicates the good feasibility and promising application prospect of lightweight polyvinyl alcohol coated fabrics in noise reduction engineering. Highlights Combination of fiber layers and polymers for acoustic coating materials. Adding inorganic nano-TiO 2 particles with different contents. Different modification methods to improve the dispersion of coating. Composite structure with reduced thickness and increased sound absorption.

Polyacrylonitrile/Polyurethane Nanofiber/Boron Nitride Nanosheet Sponges for Noise Reduction

Jiaxin Zhao,Sai Wang,Zixin Dai,Roman A. Surmenev,Shichao Zhang,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

The rapid development of modern society has brought serious noise pollution, affecting the quality of human life, thereby requiring high-efficiency sound absorption materials. However, most present noise-absorbing materials have difficulty achieving efficient absorption of both low-frequency and high-frequency noise. This study presents a facile strategy to directly synthesize rough nanofiber sponges with nanovibrating sheet structures (NSRSs) by humidity-induced direct electrospinning. The NSRS features a curled nanofiber network, which provides exceptional mechanical strength. It showed little damage after 500 stretching cycles and returned to its original state after compressive stress of 6000 times its weight. Moreover, the NSRS (11 mg·cm–3 volume density, 30 mm thickness) demonstrates remarkable acoustic attenuation (noise reduction coefficient (NRC) is 0.55), which originated from the synergistic effect of nanofibers’ viscous friction and nanosheets’ vibration to dissipate energy, achieving low-frequency absorption coefficients of 0.24 at 500 Hz and 0.93 at 1000 Hz while maintaining high-frequency absorption (coefficient of 0.98 at 2000 Hz). Particularly impressive was its practical noise attenuation effectiveness, achieving a 14.4 dB reduction for white noise and a 15.2 dB reduction for air compressor noise. These results indicate the rough nanofiber sponges with nanovibrating sheet structures provide a possible method to develop all-frequency porous acoustic materials.

Aramid nanofibers/polyimide aerogel with multi-dimensional structure for noise reduction and thermal insulation

Yuanlong Meng,Jieyu Xue,Weizhen Huang,Liping Liu,Yuanrong Ding,Xuhong Yang,Zhou Chen,Yong Yang

Noise pollution poses a significant impact on both physical and mental health of humans. Traditional acoustic materials often enhance their performance by increasing their weight, which is incompatible with the requirements of lightweight design. In this study, aramid nanofiber (ANF) is synthesized via using electrospinning, and a blend of polyimide (PI) precursor solution and ANFs are utilized to facilitate the self-assembly of ANF/PI aerogel (APA). By adjusting the content of ANFs and PI, porous network structures are achieved without augmenting the overall density, while maintaining a superior sound absorption performance. Notably, APA exhibits a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.53 and a sound transmission loss (STL) of 14 dB at 6300 Hz. Furthermore, the incorporation of ANFs and PI provides the aerogels with robust mechanical and physical properties, including only 10 % plastic deformation after 300 compression cycles, exceptional hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 139°, and low thermal conductivity of 0.0343 W m −1  K −1 at room temperature. This research presents a feasible design approach for the creation of lightweight, efficient, and multifunctional ANF/PI aerogels.

Enhanced Sound Absorption Properties of Ceramics with Graphene Oxide Composites

Chao He,Bin Du,Juan Ma,Hao Xiong,Junjie Qian,Mei Cai,Anze Shui

Noise pollution is acknowledged as the main environmental problem and is as harmful to human physical and mental health as water and air pollution. However, the acoustic properties of traditional sound absorption materials in low frequency ranges still need to be improved. Herein, the low-frequency sound absorption coefficient of porous ceramics was further improved by coating a graphene oxide (GO) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composite film inside the porous ceramics. The improved sound absorption coefficient of the porous composite reached 30.4% in the range of 200–800 Hz, which is attributed to the enhancement of the thermal viscous effect and the extension of the dissipation mechanism. Predictably, designing the morphology of three-dimensional interconnected porous structures on the microscale is comparatively useful for developing a porous sound absorbing material effective in middle- and low-frequency noise.

A PVDF/PU-based composite 3D flexible piezoelectric nanofiber aerogel for acoustic energy harvesting and noise reduction

Zhichao Zhang,Zheng Li,Qiujin Li,Xiuming Liu,Jixian Gong,Huiqin Li

Noise has become a significant global pollutant but is considered unconventional energy. General, flexible materials like fiber and fabrics cannot substantially improve noise reduction, especially in middle frequencies. This investigation presented a novel strategy based on acoustic energy harvesting. A kind of aerogel composed of strongly piezoelectric nanofiber was prepared using the Decentralized Freeze-Casting method. The aerogel demonstrates the function of absorbing low-frequency energy and medium to high-frequency sound in relation to noise. The sound absorption coefficient in the frequency test band can reach 0.58, and the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) can reach 0.36. The maximum open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current tested during the acoustic-electrical conversion process are 48.2 V and 4.1 μA, respectively, and can be stored and used. In addition, the prepared nanofiber aerogel has good waterproof and mechanical properties. This work has a promising application in future noise management and acoustic energy conversion.

An optical sensor for in situ real-time detection of intermediate products in nitrate reduction reactions

Ling Lu,Rundong Zhao,Huang Chen,Liang Tan,Dongxu Chen,Le Liu,Jingyu Xi

The nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is a promising method for ammonia production, but detecting intermediate NO2− in situ during the reaction is challenging. We propose a nitrite concentration sensor based on equivalent absorbance change, comprising a light, absorption, and imaging module, with a linear detection range of 0–1.4 mg L−1. After optimizing the absorption module parameters and applying machine learning noise reduction, the detection limit is 0.0116 mg L−1. Using foam copper as the working electrode, we achieved real-time monitoring of nitrite concentration on the electrode surface during NO3RR, validating the sensor's design. When applied to Co Base/Cu electrodes synthesized via localized electrodeposition, the sensor shows significantly lower nitrite concentration in the electrodeposition area compared to the non-electrodeposition area during NO3RR, indicating superior nitrite utilization by cobalt-based materials. This sensor offers a new approach for investigating NO3RR mechanisms and designing catalysts.

Gradient Pore Structured Elastic Ceramic Nanofiber Aerogels with Cellulose Nanonets for Noise Absorption

Dingding Zong,Wenya Bai,Xia Yin,Jianyong Yu,Shichao Zhang,Bin Ding

The expeditious growth of modern transportation and industrialization has given rise to serious noise pollution, which has brought disaster to the world economy and human health. Most existing sound-absorber with single pore structures suffer from large weight and the incidence and dissipation of noise that are difficult to be enhanced simultaneously. Herein, gradient-structured elastic ceramic nanofiber aerogels with cellulose nano-nets are successfully structured through step-by-step directional freeze-casting technology, which has a gradient structure of “larger pore-middle pore-smaller pore” in the propagation direction of sound waves and dual nanofiber networks perpendicular to the direction of sound waves. The integration of gradient pore structures and dual nanofiber networks effectively improves the acoustic contact area of aerogels while increasing the acoustic incidence. The noise reduction coefficient of the obtained lightweight gradient aerogels (average density only 9 mg cm −3 ) reaches 0.58, and the low-frequency air compressor noise can be reduced by 23.1 dB. Besides, the silica sol with hydrophobic groups endows gradient aerogels with good mechanics (plastic deformation only 5.7% after 1000 compressions) and superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle of ≈150°). The successful construction of gradient-structured dual network nanofiber aerogels will offer new horizons for the upgrading of nextgen noise absorbers.

Multilayer Polyvinyl Alcohol/Carbon Composite Aerogels with Broadband Microwave and Noise Absorption and Novel Shape Memory Effect

Chi Yu,Quanquan Shi,Hengfeng Zhao,Jianhua Guo,Dexuan Lin,Yuanwei Yao,Xin Zhang,Xinghua Jiang

With the advent of 5G and 6G technologies, the proliferation of high-power electromagnetic devices raises significant concerns regarding electromagnetic pollution and noise contamination, threatening data security, electronic functionality, and human health, particularly with the increasing exploration of marine environments. While microwave absorption materials have advanced, their underwater application remains limited due to narrow absorption bandwidth, low efficiency, poor mechanical stability, and complex fabrication processes. To address these limitations, a multilayer graded-structure polyvinyl alcohol/carbon aerogel composite using high-speed stirring, foaming, and freeze-drying techniques is proposed. The resulting aerogels demonstrate exceptional underwater compression recovery capabilities (2000 cycles at 90% strain), shape memory effect, and superior underwater noise reduction performance. The graded structure allows for precise tuning of dielectric properties, achieving broadband microwave absorption (12.7 GHz). Additionally, the unique water adhesion properties of the aerogels facilitate simple multilayer assembly, thereby enhancing structural integrity. Radar cross-section (RCS) simulations perform on a submarine model show excellent stealth performance, with a minimum RCS value reaching −52 dBsm. This study presents a cost-effective approach to developing multifunctional materials that address the challenges of broadband microwave absorption and noise pollution in underwater environments, suitable for marine applications, including radar stealth technologies and submarines noise-dampening systems, etc.

Enhancing Sound Insulation Abilities of Polyurethane Composites Through Molecular Sieve Incorporation

Shuping Sun,Xiaodong Li,Hao Jiang,Tinglu Song,Zhongjia Yang,Meishuai Zou

Polyurethane (PU) has a wide range of applications in the field of noise reduction and vibration damping. In order to break through the bottleneck of sound insulation performance of PU, three different kinds of molecular sieves, 3A, 13X, and ZSM-5, with complex pore channels were incorporated into PU through the semi-prepolymer method. The sound insulation properties of PU/molecular sieve composites were obviously improved, especially in the frequency from 1000 to 2000 Hz. The composites also showed enhanced mechanical properties compared with PU. Tensile strengths of up to 15 MPa and elongation at break of 1256.23% were achieved. A slight expansion of the effective damping temperature range was observed. The sound insulation mechanism of PU/molecular sieve composites included fillers increasing the density of PU, microporous channels dissipating sound waves, dissipating energy, and dispersing stress by good compatibility of inorganic and organic phases. The excellent compatibility came from physical and chemical synergies of soft segments perforated molecular sieves as well as the reaction between active groups of PU and acidic sites of molecular sieves. This study provided comprehensive mechanisms and strategies for the enhancement of sound insulation, and more targeted research and application can be conducted in the future.
