The phosphorus in precipitation provides a significant fraction of the bioavailable phosphorus to fresh and marine waters. To identify the possible sources and interpret the atmospheric deposition processes of phosphorus, we measured the phosphate oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O P ) in the precipitation monthly from October 2015 to March 2017 in Daya Bay, South China Sea. The isotopic results show that the δ 18 O P values in the dry season (+19.60‰ to +25.80‰, +23.10‰ average) were significantly higher than those in the wet season (+12.52‰ to +20.11‰, +16.73‰ average), indicating a variable contribution from different phosphorus sources to the precipitation between seasons. The δ 18 O P value was primarily influenced by the phosphorus concentrations, rainfall, and air temperature. The exchange of phosphate molecules among phosphorus pools caused isotope dilution (wet season) or enrichment effects (dry season) during the seasonal shifts. The δ 18 O P value of the precipitation and the local end-members indicate that coal combustion (39% ± 16%), biomass burning (22% ± 18%), and soil (17% ± 13%) sources dominate in the dry season, whereas marine sources (28% ± 19%) and coal combustion (24% ± 12%) account for the highest proportion in the wet season using a MixSIAR model. The atmospheric wet deposition flux of phosphorus in Daya Bay was 379.0 μmol m −2 ·yr −1 . The wet deposition of phosphorus exhibits a significant seasonal trend with higher deposition fluxes in the wet season than in the dry season as a result of higher rainfall and source shifts (local sources to marine source) between seasons.

Land use change and extreme precipitation are the main challenges for tropical forests, and numerous studies have indicated that these changes could affect soil ecology. However, it is not yet known whether the soil legacy effect of ongoing changes could influence the invasiveness of alien plants. Two mixtures of invader and native species ( Chromolaena odorata - Artemisia leucophylla and C. odorata - Desmodium sequax ) were transplanted to 18 soil treatments (3 forest types × 3 pre-water supply levels × 2 microorganism treatments). The results showed that the biomass of the invader was greater while its biomass fraction was lower in secondary forest soil than in primary and rubber forest soil; the soil legacy effect of drought was positive on both the biomass and biomass fraction of C. odorata . In rubber plantation soil, the biomass and biomass fraction of C. odorata were enhanced by the pre-increased water supply level. In primary and rubber forests, compared with normal precipitation, the sterilization treatment increased the biomass of the invader under drought and increased precipitation. The nutrient cycle and microorganisms both played a crucial role in this process. Overall, our study demonstrated the pronounced soil legacy effect of land use change, extreme precipitation and their interactions on the invasion success of C. odorata .

The efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine is determined by its bioactive components, which exhibit variability depending on environmental conditions and hereditary influences. In this study, we focus on Cynomorium songaricum Rupr., a medicinally significant species facing sustainability challenges. However, the ecological drivers governing its distribution, as well as the relationship between environmental factors and bioactive components, remain unclear. Thus, we sampled 28 representative distribution areas of C. songaricum in China. Employing Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) modeling, we projected current and future (2050s-2090s) habitat suitability under four emission scenarios. Notably, species distribution exhibited expansion (8.03%-29.06% range increase across scenarios) with precipitation of the wettest month (BIO13) and soil pH emerging as key drivers (combined contribution >49%). Ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) fingerprinting combined with machine learning regression was applied to quantify six key bioactive components in C. songaricum, 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, catechin, epicatechin, ursolic acid, total phenolics, and crude polysaccharides—revealing significant concentration variations among geographically distinct populations. Slope gradient (slope), min temperature of coldest month (BIO6), precipitation of coldest quarter (BIO19), sunshine duration in growing season(hsdgs), and isothermality (BIO3) were identified as key regulatory factors influencing the accumulation of multiple components. Specifically, slope acted as a key shared negative regulator for 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, catechin, and crude polysaccharides. BIO6 served as a key shared positive regulator for catechin and total phenolics, while functioning as a key negative regulator for ursolic acid. BIO19 was identified as a key shared negative regulator for catechin and epicatechin. Hsdgs acted as a key positive regulator for ursolic acid while negatively regulating crude polysaccharides. Additionally, BIO3 served as a key shared positive regulator for both ursolic acid and total phenolics. This study provides the scientific basis for enabling targeted cultivation zones that balance therapeutic compound yield with arid ecosystem conservation.
