The viscosity reducers exhibit dispersing ability for resin in heavy oil

Langman Xing,Hongping Quan,Jinyang Zhao,Xiaomei Huang

The viscosity of the heavy oil was closely correlated with its own resin content by comparing three types of crude oil. In this paper, two novel viscosity reducers with characteristic groups in molecular structures were synthesized for Xinjiang heavy oil, namely viscosity reducer 1 (VR-1) and viscosity reducer 2 (VR-2), both of them showed the better viscosity reduction effect on Xinjiang heavy oil and VR-2 was better than VR-1. The measurement results of ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer and scanning electron microscope showed that the VR-2 had better separation effect for resin than the VR-1. By analyzing the infrared spectrum results of resin molecule, it could be seen that the resin molecule contained more heteroatoms, which could more easily form the stronger hydrogen bonding with VR-2 with more polar groups to result the better resin dispersion effect. Hence, the phenomenon that VR-1 was not as good as VR-2 in improving fluidity of Xinjiang heavy oil was explained.

The Role of Amphiphilic Nanosilica Fluid in Reducing Viscosity in Heavy Oil

Yuejie Wang,Wei Zheng,Hongyou Zhang,Chenyang Tang,Jun Zhang,Dengfei Yu,Xuanfeng Lu,Gang Li

Heavy oil accounts for a considerable proportion of the world’s petroleum resources, and its exploitation helps to mitigate reliance on conventional oil resources and diversify energy supply. However, due to the high viscosity and high adhesion characteristics of heavy oil, conventional methods such as thermal recovery, emulsification, and dilution have significant limitations and cannot meet the growing demands for heavy oil production. In this study, 3-propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) was used to modify and graft amphiphilic surfactants (AS) onto nanosilica to prepare a salt-resistant (total mineralization > 8000 mg/L, Ca2++ Mg2+> 1000 mg/L) and temperature-resistant (250 °C) nanosilicon viscosity reducer (NSD). This article compares amphiphilic surfactants (AS) as conventional viscosity-reducing agents with NSD. FTIR and TEM measurements indicated successful bonding of 3-propyltrimethoxysilane to the surface of silica. Experimental results show that at a concentration of 0.2 wt% and a mineralization of 8829 mg/L, the viscosity reduction rates of thick oil (LD-1) before and after aging were 85.29% and 81.36%, respectively, from an initial viscosity of 38,700 mPa·s. Contact angle experiments demonstrated that 0.2 wt% concentration of NSD could change the surface of reservoir rock from oil-wet to water-wet. Interfacial tension experiments showed that the interfacial tension between 0.2 wt% NSD and heavy oil was 0.076 mN/m. Additionally, when the liquid-to-solid ratio was 10:1, the dynamic and static adsorption amounts of 0.2 wt% NSD were 1.328 mg/g-sand and 0.745 mg/g-sand, respectively. Furthermore, one-dimensional displacement experiments verified the oil recovery performance of NSD at different concentrations (0.1 wt%, 0.15 wt%, 0.2 wt%, 0.25 wt%) at 250 °C and compared the oil recovery efficiency of 0.2 wt% NSD with different types of demulsifiers. Experimental results indicate that the recovery rate increased with the increase in NSD concentration, and 0.2 wt% NSD could improve the recovery rate of heavy oil by 22.8% at 250 °C. The study of nano-demulsification oil recovery systems can effectively improve the development efficiency of heavy oil.

Enhancing heavy oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs via viscosity reducer-CO2 combined flooding

Liu Li,Zhao Shuaishuai,Liu Jinxin,Zhan Ende,Wei Jinyun,Xing Mengyi

CO 2 flooding, as an effective method for developing low-permeability heavy oil reservoirs, is often limited by the early gas breakthrough due to the high mobility of the gas. To address this issue, research on enhanced oil recovery using a composite flooding method combining viscosity reducer and CO 2 was conducted. Firstly, a novel low molecular weight viscosity reducer, PAINS, was prepared. Subsequently, the mechanism of viscosity reduction by the viscosity reducer in heavy oil was explored from a molecular simulation perspective. Finally, the oil displacement efficiency of the viscosity reducer-CO 2 combination flooding was studied through core flooding experiments. The results showed that the prepared viscosity reducer exhibited effective viscosity reduction; within the viscosity reducer-heavy oil system, the viscosity reducer achieved its effect by altering the internal structure of the heavy oil. The slug of the viscosity reducer was able to improve the mobility ratio of oil and gas caused by viscosity differences, delaying the breakthrough of CO 2 along gas flow channels. The viscosity reducer-CO 2 combination flooding method increased oil recovery by 14.5% compared to single CO 2 flooding, indicating that the viscosity reducer-CO 2 combination flooding technology has broad application prospects in the development of low-permeability heavy oil reservoirs. Hyperbranched Copolymer as a Viscosity Reducer for Offshore Heavy Oil: From Optimization to Application

Mao Chen,Leiting Shi,Zhongbin Ye,Shanshan Zhu,Xiao Wang,Xuwei Liang,Zheng Shu,Hong Chen

This paper discussed the selection of functional monomers and optimal synthesis conditions for hyperbranched copolymer named as HVR, a novel polymer flooding chemical, intended to enhance offshore heavy oil recovery. The potential application of HVR as a polymer for oil displacement was also evaluated. Through experiments and molecular simulations, functional monomers AOS and OP-10 for Bohai heavy oil were screened out due to their high viscosity reduction rates for oil, both above 90%. Moreover, the interaction energy calculation results suggested that AOS and OP-10 were more likely to spontaneously disperse asphaltene aggregation. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the synthesis of HVR was discussed using orthogonal design, and optimal synthesis conditions were determined. The optimal conditions for HVR synthesis are as follows: polymerization concentration of 30 wt %, initiator dosage of 1 wt %, initiation temperature of 50 °C, and system pH of 7; the sum of OP-10 and AOS accounts for 29.9 wt %, with a molar ratio of 1:1; the total amount of AM and AA accounts for 79.9 wt %, with a mole ratio of 6.5:3.5; and 3.0 G PAMAM accounts for 0.2 wt %. Moreover, HVR demonstrated good mobility control capacity and improved the recovery of heavy oil significantly in core flooding tests. Injecting a slug of 0.3 PV of HVR led to the additional recovery of 21.96 and 16.04% for oil viscosities of 350 and 500 cP, respectively. Notably, HVR’s additional recovery was over 7% higher than that of conventional hydrophobically associating polymer. These findings highlight the potential of HVR as a novel polymer to enhance the heavy oil recovery.
