The Fate of Xylene Spilled into Soil: Effects of Heavy Metals and Rainfall

Chen Yuan,Zhang Tong,Luo Shuai,Zhang Yurong,Liu Yuanyuan

Xylene is a typical petrochemical industry pollutant. The fate of xylene spilled into soil was investigated in laboratory-scale batch and column experiments. The results show that free xylene in the soil evaporated quickly (7.2–10.4 mg h −1 ), but any fraction adsorbed onto the soil particles evaporated much more slowly (2.3–2.4 mg h −1 ). The retention of xylene in the soil was mainly controlled by its adsorption onto the soil minerals. The adsorption was best described using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Adsorption up to 530 mg kg −1 was observed, and minerals such as quartz and kaolinite were the key adsorbents. Adsorption of xylene was promoted by the presence of dissolved organics up to about 50 mg L −1 , but it was significantly inhibited by cobalt-bearing compounds which are often used as catalysts in the petrochemical industry. The release of xylene from soil would be facilitated by intense rainfall and cobalt-bearing compounds but would be inhibited with the increase of rainwater acidity. This study reveals the environmental behavior of xylene in soil and provides scientific guidance for pollution control and risk assessment of BTEX contaminated sites.

Enhanced purification efficacy of the microflocculation–ultrafiltration process for raw water quality from multiple sources during heavy rainfall

Yao Tangchun,Chen Yichao,Wu Wenting,Jin Binbin,Xiao Hua,Wang Qing,Wang Ao,Xu Hang

In this study, we utilized direct ultrafiltration (UF) and integrated microflocculation–ultrafiltration (MF–UF) processes to treat raw water from four distinct sources, covering both dry and heavy rainfall periods. We assessed the effectiveness of microflocculation (MF) as a pretreatment to enhance treatment efficiency under complex water conditions, focusing on its role in mitigating membrane fouling. The results demonstrated the superior adaptability of UF membranes when combined with MF pretreatment, particularly in managing high turbidity during heavy rainfall, a challenge for standalone UF processes in meeting regulatory standards. This integrated approach notably improved UV254 removal efficiency from approximately 60–80%. Additionally, excitation–emission matrix spectroscopy revealed that while the MF–UF process is effective in removing dissolved organic matter (DOM), it faces limitations with high DOM concentrations in raw water. Comparative analysis of membrane flux between the two methods showed that MF pretreatment reduces filtration time, enhances flux rates, and significantly decreases membrane fouling. Finally, scanning electron microscopy further provided insights into the structure and morphology of UF membrane surface filter cakes, illustrating how MF pretreatment contributes to the sustained efficiency of membrane flux. The different water quality conditions were studied. The MF–UF process was studied in realistic conditions. Organic matter and hard particulate matter were studied. Elucidating mechanisms to the MF–UF membrane flux efficiency.

Vertical migration of antibiotics during rainfall throughout a year in long-term manure-fertilized soils differing in pH

Yu Zhang,Dong Zhu,Jun Xie,Jiawei Xie,Chaolei Yuan,Xiaojun Shi

The vertical migration behavior of antibiotics in long-term manure-fertilized soils during rainfall remains unclear. Here, we examined antibiotics in soil profiles (0–60 cm) and leachates following each rainfall event throughout a year for three soils (acidic, neutral, and calcareous) with a 13-year history of manure application. The total concentrations of all the antibiotics in the soil profile (11.04–190.32 μg/kg) and the yearly cumulative load of these antibiotics in the leachate (4070–6900 ng/m 2 ) were significantly higher in the acidic and neutral soils than in the calcareous soil. Rainfall caused the migration of antibiotics (especially tetracyclines, quinolones, and sulfonamides) from soil to leachate, while the migration dynamics of some antibiotics differed among the three soil profiles. Random forest analysis revealed that precipitation, soil organic carbon content, pH, sand content, and the partition coefficient ( K ow ) of antibiotics were the key factors influencing the migration of antibiotics. Environmental risk assessment suggested that antibiotics in leachates pose low toxicity risks to aquatic organisms. Nevertheless, the vertical migration of some antibiotics (e.g., sulfachaloropyridazine and sufamerazine) was positively correlated with the dissemination of high-risk antibiotic resistance genes in leachates. This study advances our understanding of the precipitation-caused vertical migration of antibiotics in soil exposed to manure application, considering future increases in severe rainfall events.

Sequestration and export of microplastics in urban river sediments

Feiyang Xia,Qian Tan,Haiguang Qin,Dunqiu Wang,Yanpeng Cai,Jun Zhang

In rivers, riverbeds are considered to have dual properties as a short-term sink and a source of further mobilization for microplastics. To better understand the sources, storage, and fate of microplastics in river systems, this study quantified the formation of microplastic hotspots in riverbeds and seasonal variations in microplastic inventories in riverbeds, especially for small-sized microplastics (<330 µm), with a fluorescence-based protocol. This study provides first-hand measured evidence for the sequestration of microplastics in the riverbed under low-flow conditions and its export from the riverbed under high-flow conditions. The results show that riverbeds in urban areas are still hotspots for microplastic pollution and that high inputs of urban microplastics control microplastic load in its downstream areas. Seasonal rainfall exported 34.86 % (equivalent to 4.34 × 10 11 items/8.57 t) of microplastic pollution from the riverbed, and its removal capacity may be related to the rainfall intensity. Wider riverbeds are conducive to the formation of microplastic hotspots due to the flow slow down. Most importantly, rainfall-driven scouring of the riverbed can enhance the pollution of small-sized microplastics in the riverbed, especially the smallest-size microplastics (<100 µm). Therefore, this study not only contributes reliable information about the sequestration and export of microplastics in the riverbed, but also provides a possible mechanism to explain the lack of small-sized microplastics (<330 µm) in the ocean.

Understanding the washoff processes of PM2.5 from leaf surfaces during rainfall events

Changkun Xie,Lubing Yan,Anze Liang,Shengquan Che

The PM on plant surface being washed into soil during the rain is one of the key processes for plants to reduce atmospheric PM . This study attempted to explore the PM 2.5 washoff processes from different tree leaves during rain events (<16 mm/h) using an artificial rainfall simulation experiment. We aimed to improve our knowledge of processes associated with PM 2.5 reduction and to provide a basis for accurately evaluating the ability of plants to reduce PM 2.5 . This is the first study showing that the PM 2.5 washoff processes from leaves follow quartic functions and 4 pattern curves under different conditions were categorized. They respectively explained the PM 2.5 washoff processes in broad-leaved trees with large leaves and simple crowns (bimodal curved), in conifer species with small leaves and complex crowns under high rainfall intensity (unimodal curved), in trees with extremely complex crowns under high rainfall intensity (continually-rising curved), and in conditions under which extremely high water interception efficiency but rather low water storage capacity occur (U-shaped curved). These curves indicate that the amount of PM 2.5 on leaves was not necessarily reduced in rainfall events. The general ranking of the average values of PM 2.5 number on leaves surface during rain events was Cedrus Deodara (40.3 × 10 3 /cm 2 ), Japanese Maple (33.0 × 10 3 /cm 2 ) > Dragon Juniper (14.7 × 10 3 /cm 2 ), Dawn Redwood (12.6 × 10 3 /cm 2 ) > Common Boxwood (6.4 × 10 3 /cm 2 ), Lotus Magnolia (4.1 × 10 3 /cm 2 ). The cycles of PM 2.5 accumulation and removal on broad-leaved trees might be shorter than that of conifers, meaning that they may have a better PM 2.5 washoff efficiency during rain, which is opposite to the PM 2.5 deposition efficiency. Higher rainfall intensity can reduce the cycle length and enhance the PM 2.5 washoff efficiency.

Seasonal pulse effect of microplastics in the river catchment-From tributary catchment to mainstream

Feiyang Xia,Yelin Wang,Dunqiu Wang,Yanpeng Cai,Jun Zhang

Rivers have received extensive attention as a major pathway for microplastics (<5000 μm) from land to ocean. This study investigated the seasonal variation of microplastic contamination in surface water of the Liangfeng River catchment, a tributary of the Li River in China, based on a fluorescence-based protocol, and further explored the migration process of microplastic in the river catchment. The abundance of microplastics (50–5000 μm) was (6.20 ± 0.57)–(41.93 ± 8.13) items/L, of which 57.89–95.12% were small-sized microplastics (<330 μm). The microplastic fluxes in the upper Liangfeng River, lower Liangfeng River, and upper Li River were (14.89 ± 1.24) × 10 12 , (5.71 ± 1.15) × 10 12 , and (1.54 ± 0.55) × 10 14 items/year, respectively. The 3.70% of microplastic load in the mainstream came from the tributary input. Fluvial processes can effectively retain 61.68% of microplastics in the surface water of river catchments, especially for small-sized microplastics. The rainy season is the main period of microplastic retention (91.87%) in the tributary catchment by fluvial processes, while exporting 77.42% of one-year microplastic emissions from the tributary catchment into the mainstream. This study is the first to reveal the transport characteristics of small-sized microplastics in river catchments based on flux variation, which not only can partly explain the “missing small-sized microplastic fraction” in the ocean, but also contribute to improving microplastic model.

Size/shape-dependent migration of microplastics in agricultural soil under simulative and natural rainfall

Xiaoting Zhang,Yingxin Chen,Xinyu Li,Yalin Zhang,Wei Gao,Jie Jiang,Aoyun Mo,Defu He

Agricultural soil is a sink of microplastics (MPs) in the environment. MPs in topsoil can be transferred deeply or into surrounding water by rainfall. However, little is known about rainfall-induced migration pattern of different MPs in agricultural soil. In this study, soil leaching experiments of 21 d were performed on Nile red-stained size-different polyethylene terephthalate (PET) particles, and shape-different polyethylene (PE) MPs under simulated or natural rainfall. Results showed that simulated rainfall of 5–25 mm/d caused intensity-dependent migration of MPs in horizontal and vertical directions. Maximum migration depth of MP particles arrived up to 4–7 cm. Rise of soil slopes could significantly increase horizontal mobility of MPs. Comparatively, natural rainfall of similar intensity caused relatively high mobility of MPs. Moreover, under both simulative and natural rainfall, mobility of MPs presented size/shape-different characteristics. Comparatively, small-size MPs (especially <1 mm) showed relatively high mobility in horizontal or vertical direction, and had high-frequency presence in runoff water . Of four MPs' shapes, fiber and film had relatively high mobility in comparison to particles. These results indicate that rainfall can cause size/shape-dependent migration of MPs in agricultural soil. It suggests size/shape-different environment fate of MPs, and provides a reference for MP control.

Effects of rainfall events on behavior of tetracycline antibiotics in a receiving river: Seasonal differences in dominant processes and mechanisms

Jianwei Dong,Qiuwen Chen,Jianyun Zhang,Zhiyuan Wang,Jinzhang Cai,Hanlu Yan,Cheng Chen

Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics are widely used in livestock and poultry breeding. However, limited work has been done on the partition of TCs between suspended sediment (SPS) and overlying water or on the seasonal effects of rainfall events on the behavior of TCs in receiving rivers. Here, we assessed the impacts of rainfall events in different seasons on the concentrations and fate of TCs in a typical watershed. Concentrations of TCs in river water, SPS, and surface sediment were determined before, during, and after rainfall events. Results indicated that the sequence of TC concentration levels in river water was wet season > normal season > dry season. Rainfall events in all seasons increased the concentrations of TCs in river water. The concentration of TCs in SPS reached 104 ng/g. The SPS concentrations were only 22–78 mg/L, while the daily fluxes of TCs in particulate form contributed 39%–62% of the total (dissolved and particulate) daily fluxes in river water. The increases in TCs in river water were mainly attributed to internal release from sediment during rainfall events in the dry season but to external input during rainfall events in the wet season. The degradation products of TCs with higher concentrations and greater toxicity than their parent compounds should be considered in the ecological risk assessment of TCs. This research demonstrated that manure application should not be conducted in the normal season or before rainfall events, especially heavy rainfall.

Transport and fate of antibiotics in a typical aqua-agricultural catchment explained by rainfall events: Implications for catchment management

Jianwei Dong,Hui Xie,Ranran Feng,Xijun Lai,Hongtao Duan,Ligang Xu,Xinghui Xia

Antibiotics receive many concerns since their negative environmental impacts are being revealed, especially in aqua-agricultural areas. Rainfall events are responsible for transferring excess contaminants to receiving waters. However, the understanding of antibiotics transport and fate responding to rainfall events was constrained by limited event-based data and lacking integrated consideration of dissolved and particulate forms. We developed an intensive monitoring strategy to capture responses of fourteen antibiotics to different types of rainfall events and inter-event low flow periods. Pollutant-rich suspended particles, as high as 1471 ng/g, were found in low flow periods while the very heavy rainfall events and consecutive rainfall events stimulated the release of antibiotics from eroded soil particles to river water . Therefore, these rainfall events drove radical increase of dissolved antibiotic concentration up to 592 ng/L and total flux up to 25.0 g/d. Sulfonamides were particularly sensitive to rainfall events because of their residues in manure-applied agricultural lands . Transport dynamics of most antibiotics were accretion whereas only clarithromycin exhibited a dilution pattern by concentration-discharge relationships. Aquaculture ponds were inferred to significantly contribute tetracycline , oxytetracycline , and clarithromycin. Conventional contaminants were compared to discriminate potential sources of antibiotics and imply effective catchment management . The results provided novel insights into event-based drivers and dynamics of antibiotics and could lead to appropriate management strategy.

Photo-ammonification in surface water samples: Mechanism and influencing factors

Yanwen Yang,Peizhe Sun,Lokesh P. Padhye,Ruochun Zhang

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) accounts for a large proportion of the total aquatic nitrogen. Compared with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), the reactivity of DON has received limited attention. Photo-ammonification contributes significantly to the transformation of DON to DIN. However, information on the mechanism of this process is limited. This study investigated the photo-ammonification process of different natural surface water samples. The effects of seasons and rainfall on this process were explored, and the contributing factors were identified. Results showed that the seasonal effect on photo-ammonification differed for different water samples, whereas rainfall increased the rates of photo-ammonification for most of the lakes. The concentrations of reactive species, including triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter ( 3 CDOM*) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), were found to be significantly correlated with water optical-parameters. Multivariable linear regression analysis (R 2  = 0.617) revealed that the photo-ammonification of DON was mainly facilitated by 3 CDOM* whereas 1 O 2 competed with 3 CDOM* and showed an inhibiting effect. The components of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were identified by fluorescence excitation emission matrices coupled with parallel factor analysis and were found to be greatly influenced by the location. Allochthonous humic-like components were found to promote the production of reactive species while tryptophan-like component was found to be a reactive species consumer. This study revealed that the composition of DOM and the reactive species governed the rates of photo-ammonification.

Simultaneous immobilization of arsenic, lead, and cadmium in soil by magnesium-aluminum modified biochar: Influences of organic acids, aging, and rainfall

Cheng Peng,Kailin Gong,Qiannan Li,Weiyu Liang,Huihui Song,Fang Liu,Jie Yang,Wei Zhang

Magnesium-aluminum modified biochar (MABs) has an outstanding effect on the simultaneous immobilization of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in soil, but the stability of remediation effect of MAB under various natural conditions is still unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of organic acids, dry-wet cycles (DW), freeze-thaw cycles (FT), and rainfall (pH 4, 7, and 8) on the immobilization of As, Pb, and Cd by MAB. The results showed that oxalic acid decreased the immobilization efficiencies of As, Pb, and Cd by 15.5%–38.5%; meanwhile, humic acid reduced the immobilization efficiency of Pb by 89.7%, but elevated that of Cd by 19.5%. The immobilization mechanisms of MAB-5 on three metals were mainly involved in ion exchange and surface-complexation. Compared with the 7th round, the immobilization efficiencies of As, Pb, and Cd by MAB in the 28th round was decreased by 17%–28% in DW, but was increased by 11%–18% in FT. In addition, MAB was transformed into hydrotalcite after FT and DW. After experiencing simulated rainfall, MAB caused more As, Pb, and Cd to be retained in the upper soil layer, and the immobilization effect of MBA was more significant under the stimulated rainfall with higher pH. The study provides a more theoretical basis for the application of MAB in the actual site remediation.
