Renewable energy-related technologies have become more important due to the increasing energy consumption. Herein, we put forward a novel organic flow desalination battery (ORFDB) using redox-active organic molecule electrolyte materials dissolved in the aqueous sodium chloride feed. Riboflavin-5’-phosphate sodium salt dihydrate (FMN-Na) is used as the anolyte, and the catholyte is 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO). Sodium and chloride ions in salt feed were moved respectively to anolyte and catholyte by electrochemical reaction of electrolytes during the charge process, and return to the feed during the discharge process. This ORFDB system possesses the stable stability up to fifty cycles and the excellent rate performance. This ORFDB exhibits the cost-effective renewable energy storage and the possibility of salt removal based on the electrochemistry of organic molecules.

Adsorption as a desalination approach has the advantages of energy efficiency, low cost, and operational convenience, but its practical application is limited by low desalination capacity, consumption/disposal of strong acids/bases as regeneration reagents, and poor reusability. Herein, we synthesized a thermo-regenerable salt absorbent by grafting ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) onto a metal–organic framework (MOF), MOF-808-EDTA, which could rapidly adsorb NaCl within 30 min from saline water at 25 °C with a desalination capacity as high as 9.4 mmol/g. Moreover, the saturated adsorbent could be facilely regenerated in 80 °C water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and derivative thermogravimetry revealed that temperature-regulated proton transfer between amino and carboxyl groups was the mechanism of thermo-regeneration. EDTA on MOF-808-EDTA appears in a zwitterionic state in water at room temperature, which allowed simultaneous adsorption of Na+ and Cl–. At elevated temperature, it returned to a nonionic state accompanied by the desorption of ions. A similar temperature-dependent adsorption–regeneration process was also observed for other salts, including LiCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2. Column experiments of brackish groundwater showed that 1 g of MOF-808-EDTA could produce ∼106 mL of fresh water (total dissolved solids < 600 mg/L) without significant capacity loss after 10 successive adsorption–regeneration cycles. This study is the first to propose an EDTA-based MOF for desalination and indicates the potential of MOF-808-EDTA as a green adsorbent for sustainable water desalination.

Exploring and designing high performance pseudocapacitance electrode materials is of great significance in enhancing the desalination performance of capacitive deionization (CDI). Transition metal cobalt is considered a prospective electrode material for CDI because of its abundance and high theoretical capacity, which can produce a higher salt removal capacity than pure capacitive materials in the CDI process. However, due to the collapse and loss of the active electrode crystal matrix, the cobalt electrode exhibits poor electrochemical performance. In this work, we used a second metal element, Fe, introduced by ion exchange pyrolysis to regulate the leaching effect and optimize the ion matching for cobalt to protect the electrode structure . In addition, the interconnected external carbon layers form a robust matrix for enhanced electrical conductivity with ion transport. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the cobalt‑iron (Co 3 Fe 7 @C) electrode structure and surface engineering, the adsorption capacity reached 72.29 mg·g −1 , achieving 110 % capacity retention in 100 cycles of chlorine removal. As a result, the carbon-coated cobalt‑iron bimetallic electrode exhibits excellent dechlorination capabilities in capacity, cycle life and rate capability. This study provides a promising avenue for the design of stable electrode materials for capacitive deionization electrodes.

A high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membrane with simultaneously improved desalination and antifouling properties while maintaining regeneration ability is highly desirable in water treatment. Surface modification is an effective approach to enhance the performance of NF membranes. In the present study, a multifunctional thin-film composite NF membrane (Fe–TFC) was fabricated via coating a regenerable ferric ion–tannic acid (FeIII–TA) layer on the nascent polyamide membrane surface. The Fe–TFC membrane exhibited enhanced hydrophilicity, smaller pore size, and lower negative charge compared with the control membrane. The salt rejections and selectivity of divalent to monovalent ions were greatly improved with only a slight decrease in water permeability due to the presence of the coating layer. Meanwhile, dynamic fouling tests with humic acid demonstrated that the Fe–TFC membrane possessed an enhanced antifouling property and excellent flux recovery rate. After coating, the normalized water flux and flux recovery of the Fe–TFC membrane increased from 0.02 to 0.26 and 32.1 to 76.4% at the end of five cycles of fouling tests, respectively. In addition, the resultant membrane exhibited excellent durability and stability under harsh conditions for ∼10 days. Interestingly, the fouled coating layer can be easily removed by HCl cleaning and regenerated through an in situ strategy. Consequently, the regenerated membranes presented stable antifouling properties and desalination performance after several times of regeneration. It was demonstrated that the unique feature of FeIII–TA networks enables the coating layer to act as a protective layer for the underlying polyamide membrane, leading to the high performance of the composite membrane. This study provides a new insight for surface functionalization and easy regeneration of the TFC nanofiltration membrane in water treatment technology.
