To address the arsenic contamination in groundwater, the hydrated iron oxide gel beads (CS-HFO) and iron manganese oxide gel beads (CS-FMO) adsorbents were prepared. The CS-HFO and CS-FMO adsorbents had porous and adsorption-friendly pore structures inside, with the average pore sizes of 3.45 nm and 7.78 nm, respectively. As compared to the CS-HFO adsorbent, the CS-FMO adsorbent had rich adsorption sites and oxidation capacity and displayed better adsorption performance. According to the Langmuir model, the saturation adsorption of As(V) and As(III) for CS-FMO adsorbent was calculated as 26.65 mg/g and 35.96 mg/g, respectively. After 10 cycles of regeneration, the CS-HFO and CS-FMO adsorbents demonstrated excellent sustainable arsenic removal ability, while the adsorption efficiencies of CS-FMO adsorbent for As(V) and As(III) were maintained over 60 % and 95 %, respectively. In addition, the competing pollutants and fixed-bed column experiments confirmed the high selectivity of the CS-HFO and CS-FMO adsorbents, which showed great promise for the future application of arsenic contamination removal from the actual groundwater environment.

Arsenic is a widely acknowledged environmental pollutant commonly found in both natural and industrial water systems, posing critical risks to both ecosystems and human health. This study introduces an iron-modified MnMg layered double hydroxide (FeMnMg-LDH) engineered to enhance arsenic removal efficiency for both As(III) and As(V) under environmentally relevant conditions. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The incorporation of Fe into MnMg-LDH led to increased surface area, optimized surface chemistry, and mitigated particle aggregation, thereby exposing additional active sites. The FeMnMg-LDH demonstrated remarkable adsorption capacities of 106.67 mg g −1 for As(III) and 107.63 mg g −1 for As(V), representing a sixfold and twofold enhancement, respectively, over the pristine MnMg-LDH. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms aligned closely with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, indicating monolayer chemisorption. Competitive anion experiments revealed minimal interference except for PO 4 3- , underscoring the material’s selectivity. The FeMnMg-LDH retained > 80 % of its initial capacity after three regeneration cycles, demonstrating robust reusability. The mechanisms investigation reveals a synergistic oxidation-adsorption process, where Fe/Mn redox couples facilitated As(III) oxidation to more adsorbable As(V), coupled with immobilization via coprecipitation, surface complexation, electrostatic interactions, and ion exchange. These findings reveal that FeMnMg-LDH is a promising sorbent for arsenic-contained wastewater treatment, offering practical advantages in stability, efficiency, and scalability.

Water decontamination from arsenic-contaminated groundwater is critical to the health of millions of households worldwide. However, efficiently removing the low-adsorbing As(III) remains challenging. Herein, a multifunctional biocomposite bead UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl@PCB integrating defects, oxidation and adsorption properties was prepared to effectively remove As(III). The N -chlorosulfonamide bound within the embedded UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl oxidizes the lower-adsorbing As(III) to As(V), which could be effectively adsorbed by the defect-rich MOF, while the porous chitosan bead (PCB) host ensures the utilisation of the reactive sites of UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl. Using 1 g/L of UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl@PCB, 1 mg/L of As(III) can be reduced to under 10 μg/L in 300 min. Furthermore, similar As(III) removal efficiencies were achieved across a wide pH spectrum (3–9) or in the presence of interfering substances (anions, cations, organic matter). High concentrations of phosphate will inhibit its performance. As(III) removal followed the Freundlich isotherm modal, and its maximum removal capacity reached 58.09 mg/g at pH 7. Furthermore, at equilibrium concentrations of 10 μg/L, its As(III) removal capacity exceeded 10 mg/g. UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl@PCB can purify the As(III)-spiked groundwater to meet the drinking standard level. Using NaOH solution for regeneration, the removal efficiency maintained above 70 % in the fifth cycle. Additional chlorination treatment can significantly improve reusability. 2.4 g of UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl@PCB packed fixed-bed column was capable of purifying 3820 BV of groundwater containing 100 μg/L of As(III). The proposed UiO-66-NH 2 -Cl@PCB has the potential to be an easy-to-use and reliable material for efficient As(III) removal.
