Artemisinin , a novel plant allelochemical , has attracted attention for its potential selective inhibitory effects on algae, yet to be fully explored. This study compares the sensitivity and action targets of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ) to artemisinin algaecide (AMA), highlighting their differences. Results indicate that at high concentrations, AMA displaces the natural PQ at the Q B binding site within M. aeruginosa photosynthetic system , impairing the D1 protein repair function. Furthermore, AMA disrupts electron transfer from reduced ferredoxin (Fd) to NADP + by interfering with the iron-sulfur clusters in the ferredoxin-NADP + reductases (FNR) domain of Fd. Moreover, significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation triggers oxidative stress and interrupts the tricarboxylic acid cycle , hindering energy acquisition. Notably, AMA suppresses arginine synthesis in M. aeruginosa , leading to reduced microcystins (MCs) release. Conversely, C. pyrenoidosa counters ROS accumulation via photosynthesis protection, antioxidant defenses, and by regulating intracellular osmotic pressure , accelerating damaged protein degradation , and effectively repairing DNA for cellular detoxification . Additionally, AMA stimulates the expression of DNA replication-related genes, facilitating cell proliferation . Our finding offer a unique approach for selectively eradicating cyanobacteria while preserving beneficial algae, and shed new light on employing eco-friendly algicides with high specificity.

Introduction Green algae seriously affect the quality and yield of Torreya grandis, it is important to explore new, environmentally friendly ways to control it. Objectives The present study aimed at preparing sustained-release algae-killing nanocapsules without pollution to the environment. Methods In this work, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), sodium alginate (SA), and chitosan (CTS) were used as raw materials in acylation reaction with the photosensitive catalytic material iron octaaminophthalocyanine (T) to generate the photoactive bio-based materials T-CMC, T-SA, and T-CMCS. Cinnamaldehyde and 2-aminobenzimidazole were combined using chemical grafting to produce a new algicide, and then formed nanocapsules by phase separation. The molecular structure of products was characterized by UV–Vis, FTIR, and NMR ( 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR). The particle size of the nanocapsules was determined by Zeta particle size analysis and TEM; DSC was used to investigate the thermal stability; The encapsulation efficiency and sustained-release performance were determined by HPLC. Then the phytotoxic of the new algicide was measured. Results The bio-based nanocapsules was successfully synthesized, which had a particle size of 10–30 nm and was stable at 40 °C. The encapsulation efficiency of the nanocapsules was 48.77%, the cumulative release rate was 83%, and the new algicide killed the green algae in a dose-dependent way. Conclusions The bio-based nano capsule is a new and valuable Sustained-release capsule, which is the method of green algae.

The artemisinin sustained-release algaecides (ASAs) have been proven to be a safe and effective mean of inhibiting cyanobacteria in laboratory experiments. However, their effectiveness and impacts on ecosystem functions (EF) in natural waters are still unclear. In this study, the in-situ inhibitory effect of ASAs on cyanobacteria in natural waters was investigated over a period of 110 days to assess EF impacts dominated by microbes and floating plants. The results indicated that ASAs had a long-term inhibitory effect on cyanobacteria. ASAs did not affect sediment but increased TOC and TP in the water column in 2–10 days. Microbial diversity and network analyses indicated that ASAs enhanced bacterial diversity, network complexity, and hub-bacteria in networks. Metabolic pathway predictions and CCA analysis showed that ASAs maintained the stability of EF by enhancing the metabolic capacities of bacteria, and the relationships between metabolic microorganisms and environmental factors. PLS-PM revealed that ASAs primarily drove bacterial resistance to cyanobacteria, which was the key mechanism for its long-term inhibition of cyanobacteria. However, the early outbreak of floating plants was not conducive to the long-term inhibition of cyanobacteria by ASAs. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms and ecological impacts of cyanobacterial inhibition by ASAs in complex aquatic environments.
