A polymer matrix composite was prepared by incorporating microcrystalline muscovite fillers into a boron-modified phenolic resin. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that microcrystalline muscovite significantly enhanced the thermal stability of boron-modified phenolic resin under air atmosphere. Then the composite was heated in a furnace. After heated, the homogeneous structure of the composite was converted into a layered structure with a ceramic shell on the surface. The layered structure was investigated by electron probe micro-analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The elemental content and chemical binding state of the layered structure were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On the surface, the reaction between SiO2 and Al2O3 occurred, thus microcrystalline muscovite fillers were transformed into mullite shell. The mullite shell could protect char from further oxidation at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a amount of reserved char could react with SiO2 to generate Si–C bond in the inner of the composite.

Phase change materials (PCMs), particularly metals, are widely employed for storing and releasing solar energy, aiming to address the fluctuations and intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. However, their implementation faces challenges such as limited spectral absorption, poor thermal storage capacity, and low wear resistance, which hinder broader application. This research introduces Al@SSBC microcapsule as a novel solution that combines photothermal absorption and energy storage functionalities. The design incorporates metallic aluminum encapsulated in a ceramic shell with superior spectral absorption. The ceramic layer captures solar energy, converting and storing it directly in the aluminum core, thus improving energy storage by eliminating extra heat transfer steps. Experimental evaluations reveal that the disk-shaped Al@SSBC-Wafer macrocapsule achieves an average absorption efficiency of 89.5 %, surpassing the traditional Al 2 O 3 shell by 63.9 times (absorbance 1.4 %). Notably, the macrocapsules exhibit excellent thermal stability, showing no leakage after 2000 operational cycles, a result of the self-sealing behavior of the aluminum core. At high temperatures, the aluminum forms a compact oxide layer, effectively shielding it from air exposure. Variants with higher aluminum content demonstrate enhanced thermal storage capacities, with the Al@SSBC-Sphere macrocapsule achieving a storage density of 797.0 J/g within a temperature range of 300–750 °C. Durability tests verify the Al@SSBC-Wafer macrocapsule's robustness, withstanding over 2000 cycles and crushing pressures above 99.4N. Furthermore, it experiences only a 0.07 % mass loss after a 60-h ball milling test. This study integrates photothermal absorption and storage in metal-based PCM macrocapsules, providing an innovative strategy for efficient high-temperature solar energy use.

Impedance mismatch and high-temperature oxidation are two main factors that limit the practical application of carbon-based absorbing materials. Although micro/nano-structured composites have been explored to alleviate these issues, they often suffer from dispersion instability and structural fragility. In this work, a coaxial composite fiber microwave absorber (Al 4 C 3 /Al 2 O 3 @C f ) is fabricated using carbon fiber (C f ) as a template and conductive core, with an Al 4 C 3 /Al 2 O 3 ceramic shell grown in situ via a vapor–solid reaction. Compared to pristine C f , which exhibits negligible absorption, the optimized composite achieves a minimum reflection loss of −49.27 dB, attributed to interfacial polarization and a built-in capacitor-like structure. Meanwhile, the material also features excellent oxidation resistance and thermal insulation (0.0567 W m −1 K −1 at 100 °C). This study presents a structurally controllable, thermally robust absorber design that overcomes key limitations of traditional carbon-based materials, offering a promising solution for next-generation electromagnetic protection in aerospace and harsh environments.

Metals are promising high-temperature phase change materials (PCMs) with high heat storage density and high heat exchange rate for high high-temperature heat storage. However, encapsulation of metallic PCMs is essential for its practical application owing to its highly corrosive to encapsulation materials and its volume expansion during the phase change. The present study applied spouted bed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to encapsulate metallic PCMs. A novel heat storage capsule was developed using iron core encapsulated with porous pyrolytic carbon (PyC) layer, dense PyC layer and dense silicon carbide (SiC) layer in turn from inside to outside. The inner porous PyC layer is used to accommodate the volume expansion of the iron core and the outer dense SiC layer act as package layer and the oxidation resistance layer. The SiC/C-shells/Fe-core capsules could work at a temperature up to 1100 °C and include solid-solid phase change (48.85 J/g, 686 °C) and solid-liquid phase change (128 J/g,1136 °C). It is demonstrated that the SiC/C-shells/Fe-core capsules have several desired characteristics, such as high thermal conductivity and high thermal density, excellent oxidation resistance and good thermal cycling performance.
