Constructing a novel three-dimensional multi-stage pore structure to facilitate heavy metal adsorption on ceramsite

Shanshan He,Lan Zhang,Yangyang Guo,Zexiao Ren,Xiang Dong,Yan Zhao,Qihong Cen,Bo Pan

A novel FAU type zeolitized ceramsite (FZC) was prepared via a novel three dimensional (3D) in-pore growth method. FZC is a centimeter sized spherical particle with a 3-dimensional radial morphology inside, with a specific surface area and pore volume 6 and 30 times that of the original ceramsite, respectively. The unique structure was constructed through electrostatic and polymerization interactions between hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles, ceramic pore walls and silicate aluminate ions, which could simultaneously improve adsorption capacity and mass transfer, endowing FZC with excellent heavy metal adsorption properties. FZC-50 could remove the majority of Cu and Zn from solution within shorter periods (73.3 % and 80.0 % of original ceramsite, respectively) with larger adsorption capacities (3400 % and 3700 % of original ceramsite, respectively). Theoretical analysis and regeneration experiments both indicate that the adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) on FZC-50 is dominated by ion exchange. And the spent sorbent can be effectively regenerated by NaCl, and the cycle number is expected to be 33 and 26 times for Cu(II) and Zn(II) adsorption, respectively. This work proposed a novel synthesis route to construct a 3D multi-stage porous zeolite inside ceramsite, and opened up new ideas for the further development of zeolitized ceramsite.

Strengthening effect of inclusion of ZrC nano-ceramic particles on the corrosion and wear resistance of Ni-P electroless deposits

Yahui He,Shihong Zhang,Yi He,Hongjie Li,Yi Fan,Yihan Zhang,Yuxin Xiang,Teng He,Ruxia Song,Bo Liu,Zhifei Zhang

Zirconium carbide (ZrC) nano-ceramic particles were embedded in the nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) nanocomposite coating on the surface of N80 steel through electroless deposition strategy. The addition of ZrC can significantly affect the surface morphology, microstructure, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the coating. Compared with pure Ni-P coating, the average friction coefficient of Ni-P/ZrC (1 g·L −1 ) composite coating decreased from 0.510 to 0.224, and the specific wear rate is reduced from 1.31 × 10 −5 mm 3 ·m −1 ·N −1 to 2.81 × 10 − 6 mm 3 ·m −1 ·N −1 . In terms of improving the corrosion resistance of the coating, Ni-P/ZrC (1 g·L −1 ) composite coating shows a lower corrosion tendency and a higher electrochemical impedance, and its corrosion rate (4.54 × 10 −3 mm·a −1 ) is one order of magnitude lower than Ni-P coating (5.08 × 10 −2 mm·a −1 ). In addition, the long-term corrosion experiments of the samples show that the composite coating has a longer protective effect on the substrate. Through the analysis of the corrosion morphology, it is found that the improvement of the corrosion resistance of the coating is due to the addition of ZrC, which reduces the surface defects of the coating. At the same time, the labyrinth effect formed between ZrC and the coating can also slow down the corrosion rate.

Enhanced anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge using magnetite-modified sludge ceramsite: Performance and microbial dynamics

Pengqu Zhang,Dongsheng Shen,Xitong Wang,Shulin Wu,Yuyang Long,Foquan Gu

The effect of magnetite-modified sludge ceramsite on anaerobic digestion of sludge was systematically investigated in this study. The results revealed that the addition of magnetite significantly altered the properties of the ceramsite, while magnetite-modified ceramsite significantly altered the sludge anaerobic digestion process. Biochemical methane production potential experiments demonstrated that the cumulative methane production of the experimental group with moderate ceramsite addition was enhanced by 17.8% compared to the control group without ceramsite. This enhancement was attributed primarily to the favorable pore structure and biocompatibility of the modified ceramsite. The incorporation of magnetite facilitated the enrichment of microorganisms and the reduction of Fe(III), thereby promoting anaerobic digestion. Moreover, the ceramsite exhibited strong buffering capacity, contributing to the enhanced stability of the digestive system. Microbiological analyses revealed that the addition of ceramsite significantly altered the microbial community. Appropriate ceramsite addition resulted in the enrichment of bacteria associated with organic matter degradation and methanogenesis. Furthermore, potential iron-reducing bacteria ( Clostridium_sensu_stricto ) and bacteria capable of direct interspecies electron transfer ( Syntrophomonas ) were also enriched in the anaerobic system. This study demonstrates a viable approach for the efficient resource utilization of sludge.

Construction a flow through catalytic ozonation system with activated sludge based ceramsite for enhanced ibuprofen removal

Xinghao Liu,Zhaoguang Yang

Emerging contaminants had drawn much attention due to their ubiquitous occurrence in aquatic environment, and their potential negative effects. In this study, a flow catalytic ozonation system with activated sludge based ceramsite was established, and its catalytic performance was evaluated for degradation of ibuprofen (IBU). Firstly, the proportion of activated sludge and fly ash was 1:1 based on Reliy model for successfully preparation of ceramsite which could catalyze ozone to completely remove IBU within 10 min, while degradation ratio was just 19.9 % in ozonation system. The effects of operational conditions including initial concentration of IBU, ozone dosage, hydraulic retention time, and pH were considered to further verify the applicability of the system. The prepared ceramsite could not only enhance ozone dissolution, but also promote the decomposition of ozone to produce more •OH, which was contributed by metal ions active sites and surface hydroxyl groups. And the contribution of •OH for IBU degradation was about 95.3 % indicating that the •OH played an important role in degradation. The inorganic ions except CO 3 2− /HCO 3 − and phosphates had less effect on catalytic performances. Furthermore, the degradation products and possible pathways were proposed. The catalytic ozonation system could effectively control the toxicity of the treatment solution. This study not only provided new ideas for resource utilization, but also provided advisable practice application of heterogeneous catalysts for dealing with wastewater.
