Phosphorus widely existing in rainfall and wastewater impacts the water environment. In this study, sludge, cement block, and coal fly ash were employed as ceramsite material to synthesize Al-doped waste ceramsite (Al-ceramsite) for removing phosphate (PO43−-P) from aqueous solutions. Batch static adsorption–desorption experiments were designed to investigate the effect of various parameters such as Al-ceramsite dosage, PO43−-P concentration, temperature, initial pH, coexisting ions, and desorbents on the removal of PO43−-P. Also, the fate of PO43−-P removal efficiency in actual rainwater was studied through dynamic adsorption column experiments using Al-ceramsite. Results showed that Al-ceramsite could remove PO43−-P efficiently under the optimum parameters as follows: Al-ceramsite dosage of 40 g/L, initial PO43−-P concentration of 10 mg/L, temperature of 25 °C, and pH of 5. Besides that, the Al-ceramsite could completely remove PO43−-P in actual rainwater, and the effluent PO43−-P concentration was lower than the environmental quality standards for surface water Class Ⅰ (0.02 mg/L). The adsorption characteristics of Al-ceramsite on PO43−-P by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were further explained. As a result, ligand exchange and complexation were confirmed as the main PO43−-P removal mechanism of Al-ceramsite. Thus, Al-ceramsite was prepared from industrial waste and has shown excellent potential for phosphorus removal in practical applications. Keywords:phosphate;ceramsite;adsorption;desorption;column experiment

In this study, a novel, sustainable and efficient ceramsite substrate of constructed wetlands (CWs) were prepared for tetracycline (TC) removal by employing bentonite (Ben) and red mud (Rm) as the main materials and pine sawdust (Ps) as the additive. The optimal parameters for Ben/Rm/Ps ceramsite preparation were obtained via orthogonal and one-factor experimental designs, and the optimal parameters were presented as follows: mass ratio of Ben: Rm: Ps = 4:1:0.9, preheating temperature = 240 °C, preheating time = 20 min, calcining temperature = 1150 °C, and calcining time = 14 min. The properties of Ben/Rm/Ps-op ceramsite (obtained at the optimal condition) were first analyzed, including XRD and SEM, and demonstrated a microporous structure with some crystal strength components. Neutral condition and higher temperature were indicated conducive to improve the TC removal efficiency, while coexisting ions (Na + or Ca 2+ ) showed adverse effect for TC adsorption by Ben/Rm/Ps-op. In addition, adsorption kinetics and isotherm could be well described by the second-order kinetics and linear isothermal model, respectively, which suggested chemisorption and multilayer adsorption thickness increased infinitely. The theoretical maximum TC adsorption capacity of Ben/Rm/Ps-op at 20 °C reached up to 2.5602 mg/g. In addition, Ben/Rm/Ps-op could effectively remove TC as the CWs substrate under a dynamic flow condition. Further, Ben/Rm/Ps-op exhibited high reusability capability and stability for TC removal, and the adsorption amount still remained for 2.13 mg/g ( C 0 = 80 mg/L) after three consecutive cycles.

The accumulation of copper tailings not only consumes a significant amount of land resources but also incurs substantial treatment expenses and causes environmental pollution . This article presents an investigation on the feasibility of utilizing ultra-fine copper tailings (CTs), polishing slag (PS), and fly ash (FA) to produce customised high-strength ceramsites for treating and reusing copper tailings. Additionally, the effects of raw material mass ratio and sintering temperature on the physical properties, thermal properties, chemical structure , and expansion mechanism of the high-strength ceramsites were investigated. The experimental results revealed that the well-formed ceramsites exhibited an apparent density of 486–2304 kg/m 3 , a bulk density of 288–1659 kg/m 3 , a 1-h water absorption rate of 0.13–3.9 %, and a particle compressive strength of 0.87–22.4 MPa with copper tailings content of 50∼100 % under preheating temperature 950 ℃ for 40 min and sintering temperature 1195–1225 ℃ for 40 min. The XRD analysis of crystal phases indicated that the mineral compositions of ceramsites contained quartz, anorthite, albite, and mullite . Moreover, the FTIR spectra displayed that [AlO 4 ] and [SiO 4 ] were interconnected into a complementary network which enhanced the strength of ceramsites. Additionally, the microstructure analysis revealed that more evenly distributed and smaller pore structures and rougher matrix were associated with higher compressive strength . The temperature difference between the interior and exterior led to the preferential formation of a slag phase which exerted a bonding effect on the composite feldspar phase. These findings suggest that ultra-finecopper tailings could be recycled in artificial aggregate technology in concrete engineering, and provide theoretical support for the large-scale utilization of tailings.

Featured ApplicationDue to the particularity of the source, the sludge can be fired into biochar ceramsite without adding other auxiliary materials, and can be used as the padding of constructed wetland.AbstractBiochar ceramsite was prepared from residual sludge at different temperatures. Specific surface area, compressive strength, and toxic leaching tests were used to compare the properties. Through tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was found that with the increase of preparation temperature, the ceramsite showed higher porosity, larger specific surface area, and better compressive strength. The leaching amount of toxic heavy metals is low when the temperature is higher than 650 °C. According to X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the main component of sludge is quartz. There were amounts of iron and aluminum in sludge, which were the main reason for its good adsorption efficiency. Through the adsorption experiment on Cr(VI), it was found that the adsorption efficiency of the ceramsite on Cr(VI) was better at low pH, and the adsorption isotherm fitted well with Langmuir and Freundlich types. The adsorption process had both monolayer adsorption and multilayer adsorption, and the adsorption process was in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetics.

The lightweight aggregate ceramsite (LAC) was prepared from by-product sulfate salt slag (BPSS) of high-salt organic wastewater with fly ash. The BPSS fixation rate, leaching toxicity, morphological structures and potential environmental risks of heavy metals in LAC were investigated. BPSS can be fixed in LAC when the mass ratio of Fly ash: Kaolin: clay was 7:1:2, the addition of BPSS was 28%, the heating rate was 8°C min−1, and the calcination temperature was 1100°C. The characteristics of the LAC met the requirements for Chinese lightweight aggregate standards (GB/T17431.2-2010). The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content of the aqueous leaching liquor in LAC was less than 0.5 mg·L−1. And the fixation rate of heavy metal was more than 99%, which meets the requirements of GB 5085.3-2007. The BPSS immobilization mechanisms were mainly related to the formation of new crystal phases, including Leucite (KAlSi2O6), Albite (Na2O·Al2O3·6SiO2), Potash Feldspar (K2O·Al2O3·6SiO2), Jadeite (NaAlSi2O6), Hauyne ([Na,Ca]8[Si,Al]12O24[SO4]2), Nosean (Na8Al6Si6O24SO4), and Sodalite (Na8Al6Si6O24[MnO4]2) by incorporation of heavy metals in high-temperature curing reaction. This work provides an effective method for the harmless treatment and recycling of by-product salt residues from high-salt organic wastewater.

Coal is the primary energy and consumption accounts for a higher proportion of fossil fuels, but its combustion product (fly ash) is a hazardous industrial solid waste (ISW). To alleviate its environmental problem and reuse waste, an appropriate disposal method for fly ash was proposed, which is using fly ash to construct the ceramsite as a catalyst carrier. To improve the catalysis property of the composite, layer double oxides (LDO) was doped into the lightweight ceramsite (CoFe-LDO/FAC) with dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP) catalysis activity. In addition, following the mindset of a “waste-to-waste” strategy, apply the composite ceramsite enhancing the diuron-containing (DUR) water purification in a DBDP self-Fenton-like system, creatively using one stone kills two birds. The porous structure endows the CoFe-LDO/FAC possessed water adsorption ability, assisting oxidants and contaminants diffusion with water inside CoFe-LDO/FAC. More than 95 % of DUR could be removed within 10 min, and the DBDP + CoFe-LDO/FAC performed the properties of stability as evidenced by low metal ion leaching in the eight times recycle. During the catalysis process, CoFe-LDO/FAC promotes the dominant reactive species ( 1 O 2 and • OH) yield by the valence cycle of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ in DUR decomposition. Abundant oxygen vacancy remedies the electron consumption and maintains the surface charge balance. This work provides a novel application of fly ash and LDO in water treatment and is helpful in ISW disposal.

In order to solve disposal problems of hazardous solid wastes, oxytetracycline mycelia residue (OMR) and dredged heavy metal-contaminated sediments (DS) from Tai Lake were utilized as raw materials to produce ultra-lightweight ceramsite (ULC). Effects of mass ratios of organic matters/SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 (O/SA) and MgO+Fe 2 O 3 +CaO/SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 (MFC/SA) on characteristics of the ceramsite were investigated to optimize the ULC production process. Our results show that OMR and DS were suitable materials for ULC production, while the optimal mass ratios of O/SA and MFC/SA were 0.180–0.296 and 0.115–0.185, respectively. The addition of MFC lowered down the softening temperature and the viscosity of glass phase in ceramsite, promoting the crystallization in the glass phase. A proper MFC/SA ratio of 0.105–0.165 promoted the glass phase and increased the porosity of ceramsite. Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 played a significant role in the formation process of crystals. However, the varying O/SA ratios only slightly impacted the variation of major crystalline phases and the viscosity of the glass phase. High MFC/SA ratios (≥0.205) decreased the crystallization of quartz, mullite and kyanite, but increased more complex crystalline phases. Additionally, the sintering process immobilized the heavy metals and could be a promising technology to control OMR pollution.

Persulfate non-radical oxidation have excellent catalytic capability for degrading specific contaminants in complicated water environments. Nevertheless, the preparation of high-performance activators and their application in actual water treatment in continuous flow mode are still scarce and unsatisfactory. In this work, copper-, manganese-, and copper/manganese-doped ceramsites (Cu–C, Mn–C and Cu/Mn–C), successfully fabricated through a facile impregnation-calcination approach, were characterized and evaluated for their performance to activate potassium peroxydisulfate (PDS) and degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) under different pH, ceramsite dosages, and PDS dosages. Compared with Cu–C and Mn–C, Cu/Mn–C showed the highest OTC degradation rate (0.0264 min −1 ) via activating PDS with an OTC removal efficiency of 98.2% in 240 min at an initial OTC concentration of 40 mg/L. The removal efficiency of OTC by Cu/Mn–C only decreased to 92.8% after 5 cycles; the activating ability of the used Cu/Mn–C was almost completely recovered through 2 h of calcination at 500 °C. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching suggest that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was unveiled to be the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for contaminant degradation, originating from the regrouping of superoxide ions or reduction of active Cu/Mn sites. Synergies between Cu and Mn species to enhance ROS yield were the primary activating mechanisms. Six possible routes of OTC decomposition were inferred. Additionally, Cu/Mn–C behaved excellently in treating an actual wastewater using a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor. It is believed that this novel Cu/Mn–C/PDS system may create a fresh path to design effective and cheap metal-ceramsite hybrid activators for degrading recalcitrant contaminants in the actual application process.

With dredged sediment emerging as a non-trivial environmental concern and numerous studies concentrating on its application in manufacturing industrial building materials, the development of high-value utilization technologies has become a promising direction. In this work, dredged sediment was used to prepare functional ceramsite for degrading a variety of antibiotics by sintering method. The mullite, anorthite, and fayalite formed have successfully cemented the iron-carbon powder, imparting a certain degree of strength to the functional ceramsite. Combined with thermodynamic profiling, SME-EDS, XRD and FTIR, the formation mechanism of functional ceramsite was divided into four stages. The leaching toxicity of heavy metals in functional ceramsite is much lower than the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard, and it has good stability. This functional ceramsite has obvious performance and price advantages over commercial fillers. The high value utilization of dredged sediment is realized, which provides a certain reference for the preparation of functional ceramsite.

The deposal of residual hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in Fenton-like system and the requirement of oxygen in bioreactor are essential parts for the treatment of integrative Fenton-like/bioreactor. A novel low-cost integrative Fenton-like and MnO 2 -filled upward flow biological filter bed (Fenton-like/MBFB) equipped with the modified ceramsite was constructed to evaluate the main properties and catalytic activity of modified ceramsite, and the optimal conditions of integrative system and compare integrative and traditional systems. In this study, the Fenton-like reactor with modified ceramsite had higher catalytic ability whose Acid Orange 7 (AO7) degradation efficiency reached to 79.3% due to large surface area and high porosity, compared with that with raw ceramsite (44.3%). Furthermore, total utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 in integrative system (from 32.41% to 53.51%) and removal efficiencies of COD and AO7 were remarkably improved, which would effectively decrease the waste of H 2 O 2 and the setting of regulation pool and aeration tank. Thus, the integrative system can save 0.51 CNY/m 3 in construction cost and 0.21 CNY/m 3 in operating cost. The average COD removal efficiency, AO7 degradation efficiency and effluent DO concentration were achieved to 64.8%, 79.5% and 9.3 mg/L respectively in integrative system were achieved in integrative system during sixty successive runs. Also, the potential degradation pathway of contaminants was also proposed according to the OH-enhanced at Fenton-like reactor due to catalyst and adsorption of modified ceramsite and the removal of microorganisms and modified ceramsite for contaminants at MBFB. This study demonstrated the feasibility of integrative Fenton-like/MBFB filled with modified ceramsite for simultaneously decreasing operational cost and complexity and enhancing removal efficiency, thus provided a one-step alternative for refractory dye wastewater.

Fluorite tailings (FT), a byproduct of fluorite ore processing, pose significant environmental risks due to improper disposal. This study presents a sustainable approach to repurpose FT into lightweight ceramsite through pelletizing and sintering. Systematic investigations of microstructural evolution revealed that the effects of raw material ratios (FT:clay=6:4–9:1), sintering parameters (1150–1250 °C, 10–50 min), and SiC addition (0–1%) were governed by feldspar formation and pyroplastic mass development. Thermodynamic calculations and differential thermal analysis further elucidated phase transformation pathways. Optimal conditions (70% FT, 30% clay, 1210 °C, 30 min, 0.5% SiC) yielded ceramsite with a compressive strength of 4.63 MPa, apparent density of 0.890 g/cm 3 , and 1-hour water absorption of 0.21%. Microstructural characterization (SEM/ICT) confirmed a dense shell encapsulating uniform spherical pores (0.4–0.6 sphericity, 0–2 mm diameter), explaining the exceptional water resistance. Crucially, fluorine migration mechanisms were identified: Fluorine speciation evolved from cubic CaF 2 to hexagonal CaF 2 /Mg 3 SiO 4 F 2 during sintering, with subsequent encapsulation in the feldspar-pyroplastic matrix reducing fluoride leaching to 0.87 mg/L (7.05 mg/L in raw FT). This work demonstrates a viable strategy for transforming FT into high-performance construction materials while immobilizing fluorine, addressing dual waste management and contamination challenges.

Promoting the resource utilization of industrial solid waste is vital for achieving low-carbon development. Leveraging the high silicate content in coal-biomass co-combustion ash (CBCA) and retired photovoltaic glass (RPVG), this study utilized the co-sintering method to prepare ultra-lightweight ceramsite. The effects of raw material ratio, sintering parameters, and silicon carbide (SiC) addition on the characteristics and microstructure of the ceramsite were investigated, along with the assessment of CO 2 emissions. The optimal performance was obtained by sintering at 1150 °C for 15 min with 80 wt% CBCA to 20 wt% RPVG. During sintering, the amorphous phase and quartz in the raw materials melted to form liquid phase, which trapped gases generated by the high-temperature oxidation of SiC to facilitate pore formation. Concurrently, silicates in the liquid phase reacted with aluminum, sodium, calcium, and magnesium ions to crystallize into albite, anorthite, and diopside, which enhanced the mechanical properties of the ceramsite. Controlled addition of SiC promoted foaming reaction and pore formation, but excessive additions of SiC reduced the structural stability. Under the optimal sintering conditions, the ceramsite with 2 wt% SiC addition exhibited the bulk density of 0.46 g/cm 3 , apparent density of 1.06 g/cm 3 , compressive strength of 9.06 MPa, and 1h-water absorption of 3.73 %. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using CBCA and RPVG to prepare the ultra-lightweight ceramsite with reduced CO 2 emissions, offering an eco-friendly solution for solid waste valorization and green construction applications.
