A skin-beyond multifrequency camouflage system with self-adaptive discoloration and radar-infrared stealth

Zicheng Zhang,Qiye Wang,Zifan Li,Zhe Zhou,Xinyi Xie,Hongchao Sun,Chen Chen,Min Wang,Xuemei Dong,Yueyue Wu,Zixi He,Bin Liu,Xinkai Qian,Junyue Li,Li Wang,Fei Xiu,Juqing Liu,Wei Huang

Camouflage technology could enhance the safety and security of desirable targets by concealing their signatures from the microwave, vision, infrared detection methods. However, conventional single-band camouflage fails to align with the current trends toward multi-band compatibility and intelligent adaptation. Here a bioskin-inspired multifrequency camouflaging system, including an artificial multispectral camouflage skin and an adaptive processing unit, was designed to simultaneously achieve infrared, radar, and adaptive visual stealth. This skin adopts a vertically stacked structure and utilizes a square patterned indium tin oxide for infrared stealth, a sector-box nesting silver nanowire-graphene (AgGr) metasurface for radar stealth, and a light-controlled AgGr heater to drive thermochromic displays for visible stealth. The system achieves multiband compatible properties with ultralow infrared emissivity of 0.24, high and broad microwave absorption in the 10 GHz-37.5 GHz region, and highly self-adaptive discoloration in response to background-color changes. Our work provides a reliable all-in-one design in flexible smart optoelectronics for future camouflage skin.

Sequentially bridged MXene platelets for strong high-temperature EM-IR bi-stealth sheets

Yushan Yang,Kaicong Chen,Yipeng Chen,Chao Wang,Baokang Dang,Yingying Li,Ming Liu,Qingfeng Sun

Combination of flexible multifunctional stealth technology properties such as electromagnetic (EM) and infrared (IR) stealth is crucial to the development of aerospace, military, and electronic fields, but the synthesis technology still has a significant challenge. Herein, we have successfully designed and synthesized highly flexible MXene@cellulose lamellae/borate ion (MXCB) sheets with strong high-temperature EM-IR bi-stealth through sequential bridging of hydrogen and covalent bonds. The resultant MXCB sheets display high conductivity and good mechanical features such as flexibility, stretchability, fatigue resistance, and ultrasonic damage. MXCB sheets have a high tensile strength of 795 MPa. Furthermore, MXCB sheets with different thicknesses indicate exceptional high-temperature thermal-camouflage characteristics. This reduces the radiation temperature of the target object (>300°C) to 100°C. The conductivity of MXCB sheet with 3 μm thickness is 6108 S/cm and the EM interference (EMI) shielding value is 39.74 dB. The normalized surface-specific EMI SE absolute shielding effectiveness (SSE/ t ) is as high as 39312.78 dB·cm 2 /g, which remained 99.39% even after 10,000 times repeated folding. These multifunctional ultrathin MXCB sheets can be arranged by vacuum-assisted induction to develop EM-IR bi-stealth sheet.

Controlled synthesis of samarium iron oxide for dual-function laser and radar stealth applications

Longfei An,Yan Shan,Congmin Yang,Kezheng Chen,Xuegang Yu

In modern detection technology, the integration of lidar and microwave radar significantly increases the risk of exposure for high-value military equipment. Developing materials with multi-band stealth compatibility is a critical countermeasure to mitigate detection risks. In this study, a brownish-yellow samarium iron oxide material compatible with both 1.06 μm laser stealth and radar stealth was synthesized using the co-precipitation method, whose properties can be tuned by varying the raw material ratios. When the samarium-to-iron (Sm:Fe) ratio was 3:7, the primary crystalline phase was Sm 3 Fe 5 O 12 . Conversely, at Sm:Fe ratios of 1:1, the primary crystalline phase shifted to perovskite-type SmFeO 3 . Notably, Sm 3 Fe 5 O 12 material, prepared with a samarium-to-iron molar ratio of 3:7 and sintered at 800°C, demonstrated a reflectivity of 29.6 % at 1064 nm and excellent microwave absorption performance at 14.64 GHz, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −24.56 dB at a thickness of 4 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth of 1.36 GHz (13.76–15.12 GHz). This study provides a simple method for synthesizing brownish – yellow magnetic samarium iron oxide, which shows wide application in laser stealth, radar stealth and visual camouflage in plateau desert environments.

Multilaminate metastructure for high-temperature radar-infrared bi-stealth: Topological optimization and near-room-temperature synthesis

Zhimin An,Yiping Li,Xiaoguang Luo,Yixing Huang,Rubing Zhang,Daining Fang

A multifunctional stealth technology compatible with infrared and radar is one of the most feasible ways to improve the survival of military equipment under high-temperature conditions. However, it is difficult to effectively integrate multiple functions into one material owing to the contradictory stealth mechanisms of infrared and radar. Herein, the near-room-temperature integrated preparation of a hierarchical metastructure with high-temperature resistance, broadband microwave absorption, and infrared stealth is realized by combining topological optimization of metastructure and a papermaking method. The tailored metastructure exhibits an effective bandwidth and absorption peak of 3.1 GHz and −25.9 dB at 1,000°C. The excellent thermal insulation allows the metastructure to achieve infrared stealth, which can reduce the radiation temperature of an object from 1,200°C to 340°C. The new technology paves the way for the design and preparation of a radar-infrared bi-stealth metastructure applied to high temperature.

Ultralight, highly elastic ZrO2/carbon fiber reinforced reduced graphene oxide aerogels with radar and infrared stealth capabilities

Xiaoqing Yin,Yanyan Wang,Nan Pang,Chenhui Liu,Yong Xu,Meijie Yu,Chuanjian Zhou

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels have attracted extensive attention due to their unique physical properties, but their poor mechanical properties and insufficient functionality hinder their further application. In this study, we propose a strategy for fiber-reinforced rGO aerogels for mechanical enhancement and multifunctional applications. We fabricated carbon fibers (CFs) modified with zirconia (ZrO 2 ) particles to enhance rGO aerogels. The resulting aerogels exhibit exceptional lightweight characteristics (8.62 mg cm −3 ) and high compressive deformation up to 90 % (320 kPa), and a low thermal conductivity of 25.3 mW m −1  K −1 . Simultaneously, the aerogel demonstrates excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −62.99 dB at 3.4 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 8.19 GHz. The introduction of ZrO 2 achieves three ends with a single effort: it enhances mechanical performance, disrupts thermal conduction pathways within the aerogel framework while simultaneously optimizing impedance matching. This synergistic effect enables dual-band compatibility for radar-infrared stealth applications, demonstrating significant potential for aerospace applications.

Advanced Multiphysics Camouflage Based on Low-Emissivity Meta-surface Coupled with Wave-Absorbing and Thermal-Insulating Aerogel

Wenqing Hai,Siyi Bi,Lili Yang,Jiatong Wu,Wenlong Huang,Mengting Cui,Xin Zhang,Jing Meng,Chunhui Chen,Huiqi Shao,Guangwei Shao,Jinhua Jiang,Nanliang Chen

The irreconcilable camouflage mechanisms of radar and infrared spectroscopy present substantial challenges to integrating multi-physics field cloaking technology. Although aerogels possess both microwave dissipation and thermal insulation, higher infrared emissivity restrict further amelioration in compatible stealth field. Herein, we propose a bilayer configuration comprised of aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogel and infrared shielding meta-surface (ISM). The top ISM with low-pass filtering capabilities is engineered to regulate emissivity while remaining transparent to microwaves. While the bottom quaternary ANF aerogels with radar dissipation and thermal insulation are synthesized by multi-scale design strategy and heterogeneous surface engineering. Through theoretical and experimental optimization, the assembled compatible stealth composite achieves a near-perfect absorption in X-band, while the synergy of low emissivity and thermal insulation facilitates concealment in infrared windows. Specifically, the minimum reflection loss (RL) reaches −32.44 dB, effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) expands to 3.69 GHz (8.71–12.40 GHz), and the integration of effective reflection loss value ( ΔH ) increases to 9.92 dB GHz mm −1 . Additionally, low thermal conductivity (0.0288 W (m K) −1 ) and average infrared emissivity (0.23 in 3–5 µm and 0.25 in 8–14 µm) can reduce infrared radiation energy by 68.1%. This research provides a new thought for the design of multispectral camouflage and demonstrates enormous potential in stealth technologies.

Core-shell Fe3O4@SnO2 nanochains toward the application of radar-infrared-visible compatible stealth

Mingtao Qiao,Yurui Tian,Jiaxin Li,Xiaowei He,Xingfeng Lei,Qiuyu Zhang,Mingliang Ma,Xiaorong Meng

Multiband-compatible stealth materials play an increasingly crucial role in the field of modern military defence because they can enable the targeted objects to dodge advance detection technologies. In this study, chain-like Fe 3 O 4 @poly(ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate- co -methacrylic acid) nanocomposites were constructed as precursors through the magnetic field-induced distillation precipitation polymerisation. Then, the liquid-phase seed-mediated growth method, together with subsequent calcination , was applied to introduce SnO 2 shells and remove poly(ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate- co -methacrylic acid) shells, which led to the successful preparation of innovative core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SnO 2 nanochains. The unique microstructure and appropriate components endowed nanochains with multiple functional applications. The minimum reflection loss value was approximately −39.4 dB (5.67 GHz), exhibiting excellent microwave absorption performance. The possible microwave absorption mechanisms involve interfacial polarisation, space charge polarisation, natural resonance, and multiple reflections and scatterings. The optimal infrared reflectivity reached 0.64, 0.51, and 0.37 in three atmospheric windows, indicating outstanding infrared stealth performance, which was attributed to the intense infrared reflection of SnO 2 shells. Furthermore, three nanochains showed different colours (dark green, brick red, and bright orange), revealing selection absorption for visible light . This can be attributed to the combined effect of visible responses of SnO 2 shells along with Bragg diffraction from the periodic arrangement of Fe 3 O 4 particles in a single nanochain. Thus, core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @SnO 2 nanochains can be considered as promising radar-infrared-visible compatible stealth materials. This discovery opens a new means to exploit multiband-compatible stealth materials.

Synchronous Visual/Infrared Stealth Using an Intrinsically Flexible Self-Healing Phase Change Film

Chengxin Deng,Hongsheng Dong,Keyan Sun,Yan Kou,Hanqing Liu,Weiwei Jian,Quan Shi

Phase change materials (PCMs) have been particularly concerned as infrared stealth functional materials due to their superior thermal management capability. However, traditional PCMs usually behave rigid solid or flowing liquid states with fixed transition temperature, greatly limiting their application especially in multi-band stealth and multiple scenes. Herein, an intrinsically flexible self-healing phase change film used for synchronous visual/infrared stealth for the first time is designed and constructed. The phase change film possesses a solid–solid phase transition behavior with adjustable transition temperature (from 38.8 to 51.1 °C) and enthalpy (from 79.7 to 116.7 J g −1 ), long-term cycling stability (500 cycles), and outstanding flexible and self-healing performance. Remarkably, the phase change film can be customized with different colors and various configurations to exhibit attractive visual stealth functions in multiple scenes. Additionally, owing to phase transition property, this phase change film can possess a thermal management capability and behave infrared stealth performance for objectives at various temperatures. Combining the above unique functions, the intrinsically flexible self-healing phase change film developed in this work may show great potential for applications in the synchronous visual/infrared stealth across a wide range of scenarios and temperatures.

Multifunctional Metamaterials with Ultrawideband Wave Absorption and Thermal Camouflage

Xiaochang Xing,Lingling Wu,Xiaoyong Tian,Dichen Li

Objects can be identified based on their distinctive scattering signatures in multiple physical areas such as optics, electromagnetics, and thermotics. To ensure comprehensive stealth and camouflage capabilities, antisense devices with multiphysical field coupling are highly desired. Herein, a multifunctional antisense metadevice that achieves stealth in the microwave band while also generating multiple camouflage images from the original object's position during the heat conduction process is proposed and demonstrated. The metadevice combines both antimicrowave detection and camouflage infrared imaging capabilities, resulting in broadband electromagnetic stealth and thermal camouflage effect. Experimental and simulation results confirm the metadevice's ability to achieve these multifunctional capabilities in temperature-dependent cases. The development of such multifunctional devices that span physical fields provides new avenues for the design and preparation of multifunctional structures.

Effects of the Etching Process on Infrared Emissivity Properties of Ti3C2Tx MXene: Implications for Infrared Stealth

Jingxuan Cui,Jiao Wu,Le Mi,Aihu Feng,Yang Yu,Yun Yu

Ti3C2Tx MXene is expected to achieve infrared stealth by regulating its thermal radiation properties. In this study, Ti3C2Tx MXene films were prepared by using the acid etching method, and the effects of etchants (HCl/LiF, HF, and NH4HF2) on the film structure as well as the infrared radiation properties were systematically studied. The intercalation process used to exfoliate single/few-layer nanosheets was found to accelerate the oxidation and increase the resistance of MXene. The mechanism behind these effects on emissivity was explained in detail. Based on these findings, the most suitable preparation process for low-emissivity MXene was selected. The resulting Ti3C2Tx film (HL-f), which used HCl/LiF as an etchant for Ti3AlC2, has a high conductivity of 3119 S/cm that reflects numerous infrared waves reaching its surface while exhibiting a low emissivity of only 0.13. The colloidal solution (HL-s) made with HCl/LiF as an etchant was sprayed directly onto a PI substrate as a coating with infrared stealth capabilities, thermal stability, and Joule heating properties, reducing the emissivity from 0.87 to 0.14. This work provides guidance for improving MXene preparation methods and their applications in related fields while demonstrating the great potential of HCl/LiF-etched Ti3C2Tx MXene as a low-emissivity infrared stealth material.

Synergistic customization of interfacial engineering MXene-integrated aerogels enable multifunctional radar-infrared stealth

Chen Li,Leilei Liang,Baoshan Zhang,Yi Yang,Guangbin Ji

The increasing sophistication of modern detection technology requires urgent solutions to the inherent conflict between radar and infrared (IR) stealth mechanisms, further complicated by the difficulties of integrating materials across diverse wavelengths. Here, a synergistic customization of interfacial engineering MXene-integrated aerogel has been developed, featuring a directional regulation of magnetic and dielectric properties. This innovative design incorporates medium-entropy alloy FeCoNi nanoparticles tightly anchored on the surface of a 3D MXene-based skeleton, creating multiple heterogeneous interfaces. The customized strategy leverages the alterations in the magnetic and dielectric components that significantly influence permeability and permittivity to enhance microwave absorption (MA) through magneto-electric synergy. The low emissivity of MXene, combined with the porosity of the aerogel, endows the material with exceptional IR camouflage capabilities. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the FCM aerogel exhibits an excellent absorption bandwidth (EAB = 5.44 GHz) and low-frequency absorption (−27.29 dB at 2.84 GHz), along with reduced radar cross section signals (RCS max  = −24.78 dB·m 2 ). Furthermore, the aerogel offers impressive thermal insulation (ΔT = 80 °C), IR emissivity (0.38), and multifunctionality (lightness, compressibility, hydrophobicity, and flame retardancy). This work provides a strategy for developing adaptable radar-IR compatible camouflage design for complex environments.

Multifunctional wood-derived cellulose/Ti3C2Tx composite films enhanced by densification strategy for electromagnetic shielding, Joule/solar heating, and thermal camouflage

Qi Liu,Pei-Lin Wang,Wei Zhang,Tian Mai,Meng-Yu Qi,Lei Chen,Junfeng Li,Ming-Guo Ma

In the era of increasing reliance on electronic devices, the development of flexible smart composite films that offer multifunctional capabilities such as electromagnetic shielding, sensing, infrared stealth, and autonomous heating is becoming increasingly significant. In this study, we fabricated polydopamine-modified cellulose scaffold/MXene composite films (PCM) using a densification strategy, resulting in films with a thickness of only 33 μm, outstanding tensile strength of 235.28 MPa, and excellent electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 44.6 dB. The PCM also demonstrates remarkable electrothermal performance, reaching temperatures of up to 610 °C at 5 V, and exhibits excellent photo-thermal conversion performance, along with good cycling stability and tunability. Additionally, the PCM’s low infrared emissivity provides it with exceptional infrared stealth capabilities, effectively concealing a high surface temperature ranging from 250 °C to 25 °C. The PCM’s ability to detect human body movement and light-driven actuation for bionic motions underscores its flexibility and utility as a sensor. Therefore, this efficient and versatile approach provides a promising method for synthesizing multifunctional MXene-based composite films, achieving satisfactory mechanical properties, high electromagnetic interference shielding, and effective thermal management for wearable smart devices and military applications.
