The separator, an essential component in lithium ion batteries , faces more challenges with the increasing diversification of electrode materials towards higher energy density and longer life. Herein we report the performance improvements of lithium ion batteries enabled by the multifunctional separator, which is fabricated by constructing the silica-oxygen-borate (Si–O–B) thin layer on Al 2 O 3 -coated polyethylene separators through surface engineering. This separator inherits the advantage of Al 2 O 3 -coated polyethylene separators in terms of excellent thermal stability and puncture strength , and no obvious dimensional change at 200 °C. The Si–O–B thin layer provides abundant Lewis acid sites and excellent electrolyte uptake to desolvate Li + ions and traps anions, and therefore favors excellent lithium ion transport properties and lithium/electrolyte interfacial stability. More importantly, the Si–O–B hybrid thin layer endows an additional function of scavenging HF and H 2 O molecules. The benefits offered by this separator are demonstrated by the enhanced C-rates capability and cycling performance of both LiCoO 2 /Li half-cell and NCM/graphite full cell, which lies far beyond those achievable with commercial polyethylene separators and Al 2 O 3 -coated polyethylene separators. This work presents a simple and efficient strategy to construct multifunctional separators with excellent comprehensive properties, and provides inspiration for the rational design of advanced separators towards next-generation high-performance batteries .

Graphical Li—pass, S—no chance : An ion-selective and cheap separator is required to construct high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries. To address the problem, a Celgard separator modified with Prussian blue is prepared through a simple growth method. This innovative separator allows unhindered diffusion of Li ions but hinders diffusion of polysulfides without affecting the performance. Application of Li–S batteries has been restricted because of their major problem, that is, shuttling of soluble polysulfides between electrodes, which results in serious capacity fading. For the development of high-performance Li–S batteries, we first time utilize a simple growth method to introduce a Prussian blue (PB)-modified Celgard separator as an ion-selective membrane. The unique structure of PB could effectively suppress the shuttle of polysulfides but scarcely affect the transfer ability of lithium ions, which is beneficial to achieve high sulfur conversion efficiency and capacity retention. The Li–S battery with PB-modified Celgard separator has an average capacity decay of only 0.03 % per cycle at 1 C after 1000 cycles.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have become promising candidates for electrical energy storage systems due to their high theoretical specific energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, there are some technical obstacles of lithium-sulfur batteries to be addressed, such as the shuttle effect of polysulfides. Here, we introduced organically modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a coating layer for the separator to optimize structure and enhance the performance of the Li-S battery. The results showed that the cell with a CNTs-coated separator exhibited an excellent cycling performance. Compared to the blank separator, the initial discharge capacity and the capacity after 100 cycles for the CNTs-coated separator was increased by 115% and 161%, respectively. Besides, according to the rate capability test cycling from 0.1C to 2C, the battery with a CNTs-coated separator still released a capacity amounting to 90.2% of the initial capacity, when the current density returned back to 0.1C. It is believed that the organically modified CNTs coating effectively suppresses the shuttle effect during the cycling. The employment of a CNTs-coated separator provides a promising approach for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.Keywords:Lithium-sulfur batteries;carbon nanotubes;separators;shuttle effect

Li1+xAlxTi2–x(PO4)3 (LATP) is a NASICON-type solid electrolyte that presents stability in aqueous media and high ion conductivity. With these advantages, it is expected to be used as a cathode and separator coating material for lithium-ion batteries to improve battery performance. However, it also displays a high level of residual moisture introduction due to its strong water absorption. Meanwhile, LATP particle size is a key influential factor for the residual moisture level and thereby produces an impact on the battery performance. In this research, we prepared three different particle sizes of LATP (100, 500, and 1000 nm) to investigate their effects as separator coatings on residual moisture and NCM811 battery performance. The results indicate that the water absorption of LATP is much higher than that of Al2O3 with the same particle size; the use of nanoscale LATP keeps the residual moisture of the LATP/PE separator rather high. When the particle size is in the range of 100–1000 nm, the battery’s cycling performance gradually deteriorates with the decrease of the particle size, among which the degradation of rate performance is more noticeable. More importantly, the research finds that LATP particles coated with polydopamine (PDA) can effectively reduce the coating’s residual moisture. After being coated with PDA, LATP particles with a particle size of 1000 nm result in the residual moisture content within the composite separator decreasing from 2136 to 408 ppm, thereby contributing to the optimal performance of NCM811||Li and NMC811||C batteries.

Currently, supercapacitors have the shortcoming of limited operation temperature mainly owing to the low thermal stability of separators, which seriously hinder their application at high temperatures. In this work, a simple and universal method for the fabrication of high-temperature standing ceramic-based separators is reported. It was demonstrated that such a separator can withstand over 350 °C without any shrinkage. Supercapacitors fabricated by using such separators can be operated at as high as 120 °C efficiently and even after 9000 cycles at 2.5 V operation voltage, their capacitance still retained approximately 88 % of their initial performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a separator with such high thermal stability.

Commercial separators (polyolefin separators) for lithium-ion batteries still have defects such as low thermostability and inferior interface compatibility, which result in serious potential safety distress and poor electrochemical performance. Zeolite/Polyacrylonitrile (Z/PAN) composite separators have been fabricated by electrospinning a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane and then dip-coating it with zeolite (ZSM-5). Different from commercial separators, the Z/PAN composite separators exhibit high electrolyte uptake, excellent ionic conductivity, and prominent thermal stability. Specifically, the Z/PAN-1.5 separator exhibits the best performance, with a high electrolyte uptake of 308.1% and an excellent ionic conductivity of 2.158 mS·cm−1. The Z/PAN-1.5 separator may mechanically shrink less than 10% when held at 180 °C for 30 min, proving good thermal stability. Compared with the pristine PAN separator, the Li/separator/LiFePO4cells with the Z/PAN-1.5 composite separator have excellent high-rate discharge capacity (102.2 mAh·g−1at 7 C) and favorable cycling performance (144.9 mAh·g−1at 0.5 C after 100 cycles). Obviously, the Z/PAN-1.5 separator holds great promise in furthering the safety and performance of lithium-ion batteries.Keywords:separator;electrospinning;polyacrylonitrile;zeolite;lithium-ion batteries

The nitrogen-doped MXene carbon nanosheet-nickel (N-M@CNi) powder was successfully prepared by a combined process of electrostatic attraction and annealing strategy, and then applied as the separator coating in lithium–sulfur batteries. The morphology and structure of the N-M@CNi were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption method. The strong LiPS adsorption ability and high conductivity are associated with the N-doped carbon nanosheet-Ni modified surface. The modified separator offers the cathode of Li–S cell with greater sulfur utilization, better high-rate adaptability, and more stable cycling performance compared with the pristine separator. At 0.2 C the cell with N-M@CNi separator delivers an initial capacity of 1309 mAh g−1. More importantly, the N-M@CNi separator is able to handle a cathode with 3.18 mg cm−2sulfur loading, delivering a capacity decay rate of 0.043% with a high capacity retention of 95.8%. Therefore, this work may provide a feasible approach to separator modification materials towards improved Li-S cells with improved stability. Keywords:MXene;carbon nanosheets;lithium–sulfur batteries;modified separator

Lithium dendrites, growing during the charging and discharging processes, can pierce the separators and lead to internal short circuits, which is one of the main factors resulting in thermal runaway of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). In this work, we developed a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based Janus separator with an ultrathin polypyrrole (PPy) layer towards efficiently suppressing lithium dendrite growth. The PPy layer with thickness of approximately 200 nm has Pyrrole-N with lone pairs of electrons, which can act as nucleation sites for lithium ions. As a result, lateral lithium deposition can be achieved on the anode, thus preventing the lithium dendrites from piercing the separators. Stable stripping/plating performance over extended cycling and a capacity retention rate of 76.8% after 1000 cycles have been achieved in the Janus PVDF/PPy separator-based Li//Li symmetric cells and Li//LiFePO 4 half cells, respectively. The development of Janus separators with conductive polymer layers presents a promising solution for improving the safety and electrochemical performance of LMBs.

Lithium metal batteries offer a huge opportunity to develop energy storage systems with high energy density and high discharge platforms. However, the battery is prone to thermal runaway and the problem of lithium dendrites accompanied by high energy density and excessive charge and discharge. This study presents an assisted assembly technique (AAT) based on flexible barium titanate (BTO) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofibers for preparation of a battery separator. AAT was used to combine the BTO diaphragms with high thermal stability and the PVDF-HFP diaphragms with good Elasticity and piezoelectricity, and the thermal stability was improved by 200 and 125% increase in battery cycle life compared to PVDF-HFP diaphragms alone. And demonstrated excellent thermal closure performance between 160 and 200 °C. Furthermore, the piezoelectric effect of the composite film prevents the growth of lithium dendrites in the vertical direction, avoiding the trouble of lithium dendrites penetrating the battery separator. Therefore, the two safety guarantee properties of the composite separator greatly enhance the safety and service life of the battery, which allows the application of lithium batteries to be further improved in the application scenario and application scale.

As the fast-paced evolution of high energy density rechargeable batteries continues, the lower lithium ion (Li+) mobility of polyolefin separators has become a major bottleneck in the adoption of lithium metal electrodes. With undesired Li+-anion solvated structures in the electrolyte, previous separator modification strategies are generally confronted with the dilemma of concurrently enhancing the Li+ transference number and reducing the anion transference number, as well as overall conductivity. Here, a strategy are reported to prepare high-performance separators with polyolefin separators coated by lactic acid lithium with the assistance of dopamine hydrochloride and triethanolamine, which can achieve a stable LMB operation at 1 C for 600 cycles with a capacity retention of 92%, substantially outperforming pristine PP separator. The ultrathin polar modification layer on the surface of the PP separator renders optimal electrolyte wettability and notable electrolyte uptake. The electrostatically repellent nature of the negatively charged −COO– moieties on the ion permeable layers can effectively increase the Li+ transference number without sacrificing the overall ion conductivity. The ionic conductivity of the DL2-PP separator reaches 1.2 mS cm–1, and the lithium-ion mobility is 0.68, enabling a rapid, selective and uniform Li+ flux through the separator. DFT calculations are utilized to analyze the underlying mechanism. Such features can facilitate uniform nucleation/deposition of Li and mitigate Li dendrite growth, leading to enhanced battery durability and safety.

The commercialization of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is encountering significant challenges due to the electrolyte incompatibility and poor mechanical properties of polyolefin separators, as well as the hazardous growth of lithium dendrites at the anode. Simultaneously, the development of safe and environmentally-friendly separators has become a central focus in rechargeable battery technology. In this study, we introduce a novel Janus separator (CP@SiO 2 ), featuring a composite structure with cellulose paper (CP) as the base layer and electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers as the top layer. The nanofibers are uniformly coated with mesoporous SiO 2 nanoparticles through hydrogen bonding. The CP@SiO 2 separator leverages its three-dimensional lithium-ion channels and rigid ceramic particles to enhance electrolyte retention and stabilize lithium metal anodes (LMA). Shielded by this separator, LMA exhibits an impressive cycling performance, enduring a current density of 2 mA cm −2 for 350 h without short-circuiting, effectively doubling the cycle life compared to conventional PP separators. Furthermore, the Li/LiFePO 4 cell utilizing the CP@SiO 2 separator demonstrates a high capacity of 101 mAh·g −1 at 5C, with 90 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles. This outstanding electrochemical performance is attributed to the compatible anode/separator interface and the effective inhibition of lithium dendrite growth. The research presented in this work capitalizes on a synergistic configuration design, offering a promising pathway towards the development of high-safety and advanced lithium-ion separators.

Issues with lithium dendrite growth and dead lithium formation limit the practical application of lithium metal batteries, especially under high current conditions where uneven temperature distribution leads to serious safety concerns. Herein, In situ assembly of polydopamine (PDA) and aluminum nitride (AlN) coatings on polypropylene (PP) separator is introduced to address these challenges. The AlN particles are encapsulated by PDA, and the functional groups in PDA form Al-O coordination bonds with Al 3+ , which promote uniform Li + flux and reduce the migration barrier of Li + , thereby enabling dendrite-free lithium deposition. In addition, the designed PDA@AlN@PP separator exhibits excellent electrolyte wettability, enhanced mechanical performance, and stable thermal resistance, providing a uniform thermal distribution and serving as a robust barrier against dendrite penetration. As a result, symmetric Li||Li cells (over 1800 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 ) and Li||Cu cells (over 600 cycles at 0.5 mA cm −2 and 0.5 mAh cm −2 , coulombic efficiency over 98%) demonstrate outstanding long cycle performance and high coulombic efficiency. Moreover, the corresponding Li||LiFePO 4 cells exhibit a high specific capacity of 91.3 mAh g −1 at 5 C. This work provides a new approach for designing functionalized separators for high-performance lithium metal batteries.
