Laminated glasses have been widely used in buildings, physical protections, and vehicles because of their safety, sound insulation, thermal insulation, and other performance. In recent years, the high sound insulation performance of laminated glass intermediate films in the frequency range of low or high frequencies has attracted more and more attentions. In this work, a glass fiber/polyurethane elastomer composite (PU-MGF) film with high transparency and impact resistance has been successfully synthesized, 5 dB of the transmission loss increased at 1600–6000 Hz, and 3.6 dB increased at 63–1600 Hz compared with the control polyurethane film. This is a significant progress in the laminated glass industry. In addition, the transmittance of the composite reaches over 75%. The excellent impact resistance of the laminated glass, based on PU-MGF film, has been confirmed through falling ball impact test, demonstrating its ability to withstand multiple impacts without spattering. The PU-MGF film prepared in this work exhibits great potential for applications in building windows, transportation, and soundproof devices.

In this paper, PI-reinforced polymethylsiloxane aerogels composites were prepared by using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) as precursor and polyimide fibers as reinforcement phase in the aqueous solvent system through acid-base two-step method and CO 2 supercritical drying method. The effects of changes in the length and content of PI fibers on the thermal, mechanical, and sound insulation properties of the aerogel composites were systematically studied. The PI fiber is tightly bonded with the flexible aerogel substrate, showing good thermal properties. The density of the prepared samples is between 0.05 and 0.20 g/cm 3 , and the thermal conductivity is between 0.021 and 0.026 W/(m K). The thermal conductivity of samples decreases with the increase of fiber length and increases with the increase of PI fiber content, and the initial thermal decomposition temperature reaches 522.1 °C. During the compression test, PI-reinforced polymethylsiloxane aerogels did not crack in the 20% deformation compression process, and the rebound rate was between 44 and 46%, which was little affected by the reinforcing phase. The maximum compressive strength was 0.023 MPa, which was 1.4 times that of the polymethylsiloxane aerogel without adding reinforcing phase. The sound insulation property of PI simple with density around 52 mg/cm 3 is mainly affected by fiber content and length change in low-frequency region, and the sound transmission loss of the sample with 3 mm and 2 wt% PI fibers reaches 18 dB at 500 Hz.

Sound absorption materials are usually used to reduce room reverberation, and sound insulation materials are used to prevent sound transmission. However, traditional sound absorption or sound insulation materials often exhibit only a single acoustic function. As a result, they cannot provide both sound absorption and sound insulation at the same time. For this purpose, back coated double layer aerogel was prepared by thermal curing method. It solves the problem that sound absorption and sound insulation cannot exist at the same time. The structure consists of a sound absorption layer made from biomass aerogel and a damping layer coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The sound absorption layer consists of a porous network structure formed by crosslinking delignified kapok fibers and sodium alginate with calcium ion (Ca 2+ ). The damping layer is constructed by the back-coated PDMS damping material. The effects of the concentration of Ca 2+ and the coating method of PDMS on the acoustic behavior of the aerogel were investigated. At 50 ∼ 6300 Hz, the aerogel not only has good sound absorption performance but also has sound insulation performance. Furthermore, aerogel effectively addresses the issue of interfacial incompatibility in multilayer heterogeneous composites, providing a promising approach for designing modern noise reduction materials.

Acoustic materials embed with inorganic fillers in viscoelastic polymers have promising applications in industrial settings. However, optimizing the sound insulation of composites by adjusting the microstructure of nanofillers remains a challenge. In this study, we synthesize adjustable hollow hierarchical Zeolite Socony Mobil #5 (ZSM-5) which can be used as nanofillers in a sound insulation nanocomposite based on the polyacrylate (PA). The results show that the nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% hierarchical hollow ZSM-5 can increase the sound transmission loss (STL) by 33.4%. The maximum STL value reaches as high as 40 dB. The damping properties of the nanocomposites were also improved by adding ZSM-5 into the PA matrix. When the loading of hollow ZSM-5 is 0.5 wt%, the storage modulus increased by 44%, as high as 4486.7 MPa. This strategy opens up a promising way for the sound insulation of composites based on controllable inorganic nanofillers.

A shear thickening fluid (STF) was prepared from SiO2/PEG200 by ball-milling and its effect on the sound insulation properties of textile materials investigated. The rheological properties of the STF were evaluated using a high-speed rotary rheometer and a field emission scanning electron microscope. Fabrics based on fibers of profiled cross-section were knitted on a computerized flat knitting machine, then dipped in the diluted STF and the microstructure and the sound insulating properties of the STF-treated fabrics were established using a two-channel acoustic analyzer. It was found that an increase in the SiO2 content of the STF decreased the critical shear rate, and the thickening effect of the STF system became effective once the SiO2 content reached 30 wt%. The sound insulation performance of the STF-treated fabrics was superior to that of the untreated fabrics, and their level of sound insulation level was particularly increased with increasing surface density.

Combining decorative and functional elements is an essential trend in the value-added nature of fast-growing wood, which can promote its commercial application in wood-based boards, interior decoration, and furnishings. This study introduces a convenient method for preparing modified veneers that can replace the predominant market colors by adjusting the pH value and furfuryl alcohol (FA) concentration. The physical, mechanical, anti-mildew, and sound insulation properties were systematically evaluated. The results revealed that pH significantly affected color, and the surface bonding strength of all modified veneers met standard requirements. The shear strength, sound insulation properties, and dimensional stability of the plywood made from 70% FA-modified veneer at strong acid conditions were significantly improved, but the bending strength was reduced. Analysis of Variance revealed that pH values and FA concentration significantly affected the color changes. Combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results, it was shown that the distribution of the FA and the interaction between FA and cell wall chemical components were influenced by pH values and furfuryl alcohol concentration, which are likely responsible for the color and property changes.

A novel sound insulation composite was successfully fabricated by modifying glass fiber fabric with tetrapod ZnO whisker (TW-ZnO)/SiO2-compounded shear thickening fluid (STF). The rheological properties of the compounded STF were evaluated using a high-speed rotational rheometer. The microstructure and sound-insulating properties of the STF-treated glass fiber fabric (STF-fabric) were characterized using a scanning electron microscope and a two-channel acoustic analyzer, respectively. The shear thickening effect of TW-ZnO/SiO2-compounded STF can be better than that of SiO2-monodispersed STF. The sound insulation performance of the STF-fabric, which was superior to that of the original fabric, was related to the fabric weaving structure and shear thickening effect of the compounded STF.

Polyurethane (PU) has a wide range of applications in the field of noise reduction and vibration damping. In order to break through the bottleneck of sound insulation performance of PU, three different kinds of molecular sieves, 3A, 13X, and ZSM-5, with complex pore channels were incorporated into PU through the semi-prepolymer method. The sound insulation properties of PU/molecular sieve composites were obviously improved, especially in the frequency from 1000 to 2000 Hz. The composites also showed enhanced mechanical properties compared with PU. Tensile strengths of up to 15 MPa and elongation at break of 1256.23% were achieved. A slight expansion of the effective damping temperature range was observed. The sound insulation mechanism of PU/molecular sieve composites included fillers increasing the density of PU, microporous channels dissipating sound waves, dissipating energy, and dispersing stress by good compatibility of inorganic and organic phases. The excellent compatibility came from physical and chemical synergies of soft segments perforated molecular sieves as well as the reaction between active groups of PU and acidic sites of molecular sieves. This study provided comprehensive mechanisms and strategies for the enhancement of sound insulation, and more targeted research and application can be conducted in the future.

Effectively attenuating highly penetrative low-frequency noise (LFN, f < 500 Hz) presents a significant challenge. Traditional acoustic insulation materials are circumscribed by the mass law, presenting an inherent conflict between lightweight design and acoustic insulation. Despite the promising potential of PUA aerogels in acoustic insulation, attributed to their lightweight and high damping properties, their low-density results in inadequate areal density. Consequently, it remains challenging to effectively suppress LFN through mass inertia alone. Moreover, lightweight design often reduces mechanical properties, creating a conflict between lightweight, high strength, and low-frequency acoustic insulation. Inspired by the periodic structures of metamaterials, this study fabricates a PUA aerogel with an ordered metamaterial-like structure (density: 0.126 g/cm 3 ). Through self-assembly induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an ordered porous cavity and fibrous topological skeleton were formed. This structure creates an efficient interfacial reflection network that provides dynamic acoustic impedance for LFN attenuation. The average STL is at least 42.6 dB in the 45–500 Hz range and 39.6 dB in the broader 45–6300 Hz range, 16.35 times higher than that of commercial melamine foam of the same 2 cm thickness. Its weight is just 1/770 that of lightweight concrete bricks with equivalent noise reduction performance, and its thickness is only 2/25 of theirs. At 145 °C, the aerogel maintains a temperature difference of approximately 105.05 °C between its surfaces. The compressive strength of the modified aerogels is 2.76 times that of unmodified PUA aerogels. The simple, cost-effective fabrication process and the lightweight, high-strength, and outstanding low-frequency acoustic insulation properties make metamaterial-like PUA aerogels promising for noise reduction in residential, transportation, and industrial applications.
