Using Silane Coupling Agent Coating on Acidic Aggregate Surfaces to Enhance the Adhesion between Asphalt and Aggregate: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Gongying Ding,Xin Yu,Fuqiang Dong,Zezhong Ji,Junyan Wang

Acidic aggregates have the merits of high strength and good abrasion resistance capacity. However, its poor adhesion with asphalt binder constrains its application in pavement construction. Among these, the granite aggregate is the typical one. Therefore, this study modified granite aggregates’ surface to improve their adhesion property with the asphalt binder. Specifically, the silane coupling agent (SCA) KH-560 was adopted to achieve the modification purpose. Subsequently, asphalt mixtures with modified and unmodified granite, basalt, and limestone were subjected to the boiling test, immersion test, and freeze-thaw splitting test to estimate the asphalt adhesion property. Moreover, a molecular dynamic simulation was employed to characterize the asphalt-aggregate interface from the molecular scale. The radius distribution function (RDF) and interaction energy were used as the primary indicators. The results showed that the SCA could efficiently improve the adhesion between asphalt and granite aggregates, comparable with the alkaline aggregates. In terms of the molecular scale, the incorporation of SCA could significantly increase the concentration distribution of asphalt molecules on the aggregate surface. Meanwhile, the interaction energy was correspondingly increased due to the considerable growth of non-bond interaction. Keywords:acidic aggregate;silane coupling agent;asphalt mixture;asphalt-aggregate interface;molecular dynamics

Mechanistic study of the effect of aggregate surface wettability on mortar performance and interfacial strength

Chengyan Hou,Haibo Zhang,Hucheng Chai,Chunwei Wang,Xu Yang

Aggregates account for approximately 65–75 % of the concrete volume, significantly influencing its performance. However, the effect of aggregate surface wettability on concrete performance is frequently neglected. In this study, 12 types of aggregates were prepared with surface contact angles ranging from 34.0° to 77.9°, using a silane coupling agent (SCA) to modify quartz sand. The effects of contact angle on the fluidity and mechanical performance of mortar, as well as the performance of the interface transition zone (ITZ), were investigated. Further analysis explored the mechanism by which the contact angle affects mortar performance. The results showed that the optimal performance of mortar was achieved at a contact angle of 60.8°, resulting in flexural and compressive strengths of 8.8 MPa and 59.1 MPa, respectively-representing increases of 9 % and 19.5 % compared to unmodified aggregates. Additionally, microscopic tests confirmed that the mechanical performance of the ITZ improved by 53.2 %, while its porosity decreased by 19.2 %, leading to enhanced interfacial bonding performance. However, when the contact angle exceeds 60.8°, the mortar performance gradually decreases. Based on these findings, this study proposed a mechanism for the influence of aggregate surface contact angle on mortar performance, providing a new way to improve the quality of cement concrete and offering important theoretical significance and practical value.

Enhanced Embolization Efficacy with the Embolic Microspheres Guided by the Aggregate Gradation Theory Through In Vitro and Simulation Evaluation

Huang Dan,Chen Zhipeng,Yang Yilin,Jiang Lelun,Liu Yang,Yang Yuexiong,Zhang Chao

Purpose Size of the embolic microspheres is of critical importance in the transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to achieve the optimal embolization therapy. In this regard, to optimize the size distribution of the embolic microspheres and enhance the embolization efficacy, the aggregate gradation theory is used to formulate the microspheres. Methods Finite element analysis (FEA) and in vitro experiments confirmed a better embolic efficacy for the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microspheres formulated according to the aggregate gradation theory. Results The average volume flow of the graded group was 1.31 × 10 −4 mL/s in vitro experiment, which was lowest among all the groups suggesting the graded group had the optimal embolic effect. The graded group has the largest pressure gradient of 314.22 Pa/ μ m in FEA among all the groups, which can be attributed to the highest packing density of the graded group compared with other groups. Conclusions The graded embolic microspheres have a larger drag coefficient compared with the narrow size distribution groups both in vitro experiment and FEA. These findings can be used to formulate the embolic agents with optimal size distributions and are significant for the improvement of clinical embolization therapy.

Recycling municipal solid waste incineration fly ash in super-lightweight aggregates by sintering with clay and using SiC as bloating agent

Siyu Han,Yingchun Song,Tongyao Ju,Yuan Meng,Fanzhi Meng,Mengzhu Song,Li Lin,Mengdan Liu,Jinglin Li,Jianguo Jiang

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is classified as hazardous waste and requires proper treatments. Sintering of MSWI fly ash for the production of lightweight aggregate (LWA) is a promising treatment technology , while the dependence on natural bloating clay to produce high quality LWA has limited its wide application. In this study, by using SiC as a bloating agent, normal clay could be used to produce super-lightweight aggregate (bulk density <500 kg/m 3 ) with MSWI fly ash. Effects of SiC addition amount, sintering temperature and duration on LWA performance were studied. The results showed that LWA with SiC addition of 0.1–0.5 wt% had significant expansion at sintering temperature of 1120 °C–1160 °C. The optimal conditions were 0.3 wt% SiC addition and sintering at 1120 °C for 30 min, and the bulk density could reach 212 kg/m 3 with other properties meeting the LWA standard (GB/T 17431.1-2010). Further, the heavy metal leaching toxicity was significantly decreased after sintering and met the MSWI fly ash utilization standard (HJ 1134–2020). The X-ray diffraction results revealed the formation of a complex diopside-based phase after sintering. This study provides a new approach for recycling MSWI fly ash in LWA without dependence on specific clay resources, and makes this technology wider applicability.

Influence of novel long-chain active composite rejuvenators on interfacial adhesion between aged SBS modified asphalt and aggregate

Xiaobin Han,Sanpeng Mao,Shangheng Zeng,Zhilong Cao,Peng He,Wei Du,Jianying Yu

In this study, the novel long-chain active composite rejuvenators (NLCACRs) were composed of long-chain active rejuvenators (LCARs) and aromatic hydrocarbon oil (ArO). Surface free energy method (SFE method), boiling water test method (BWT method) and related parameters were used to evaluate the effect of NLCACRs on interfacial adhesion between aged SBS modified asphalt (ASBS-MA) and granite, and preliminarily predict the moisture sensitivity of asphalt-aggregate system. The results indicated that NLCACRs could increase the surface free energy of ASBS-MA, and the increased range varied with the composition and structure of NLCACRs. The NLCACRs could not only supplement the light components lost by asphalt during aging, but also reconstruct the damaged structure of aged SBS, so they were more effective for the recovery of cohesion work of ASBS-MA. NLCACRs could significantly increase the interfacial adhesion between ASBS-MA and acid granite, and decrease the moisture sensitivity of rejuvenated SBS modified asphalt (RSBS-MA)-granite system. And the results of the BWT method indicated that long-term aging decreased the adhesion grade between SBS modified asphalt and granite from G4 to G2. NLCACRs could restore the adhesion grade of ASBS-MA and granite to the level of original SBS modified asphalt. The comprehensive analysis of the influence of NLCACRs on the interfacial adhesion between ASBS-MA and aggregate showed that the theoretical law (SFE method) was consistent with that of the actual (BWT method). This study could help to explore the influence of NLCACRs on the moisture stability of aged SBS modified asphalt mixture and provide the theoretical basis for its application in practical engineering.

Design and evaluation of semi self-compacting cold mix polyurethane mixture for steel bridge deck pavement

Shaochan Duan,Xiaonan Wu,Hongyu Wang,Jianying Hu,Yingcheng Luan,Tao Ma

To enhance the environmental sustainability and pavement performance of steel bridge deck paving, a novel semi self-compacting cold mix polyurethane mixture (CMPU-10) for steel bridge deck paving was specifically designed and evaluated. Herein, this study presents the first comprehensive documentation of the research process involved in the mix design of CMPU-10. Initially, based on the theory of maximum density curve, a gradation with a Talbot index ( n ) of 0.40 was identified as the preliminary gradation for designing CMPU-10 by void ratio, compressive strength and slump tests. Subsequently, the aggregate grade-by-grade filling test revealed the critical influence of sieve sizes (0.075 mm, 0.6 mm, and 2.36 mm) on the mixture dense degree. From these findings, an in-depth analysis of the effects of aggregate passage under the key sieve on the degree of mixture density, compressive strengths, and flow properties led to the determination of the gradation range of CMPU-10. The optimum binder-aggregate ratio for the median gradation was determined to be 9.2%. Finally, wheel tracking, semi-circular bending (SCB) and freeze-thaw splitting tests showed that the designed CMPU-10 exhibits superior high-temperature stability performance, low-temperature cracking resistance and moisture susceptibility compared to the TAF epoxy asphalt mixture (EA-10). This paper not only provides a new potential low-carbon material for steel bridge deck paving projects, but also establishes a theoretical foundation for the optimization design and promotion polyurethane mixture.
