Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) is promising for addressing water scarcity due to its wide global applicability. However, given their weak heat and mass transfer properties, most existing SAWH systems remain uncompetitive in fresh water production in most practical scenarios. Here, we present a modular water harvester (MWH) with a serial modular design to achieve advanced heat and mass management. The device can perform sorption kinetics without any power equipment, reduce heat radiation to semi-decouple the desorption and condensation process, and induce thermal buoyancy to enhance water vapor transport via the chimney effect. The MWH reports 3.78 kg m −2 day −1 and 1.66 kg kg −1 sorbent day −1 of water productivity outdoors, which is the highest yield among reported passive SAWH devices.

Harvesting water from atmosphere is emerging as a potential strategy to solve the problem of water scarcity. In this work, CaCl 2 encapsulated Fe-ferrocene MOFs hollow microspheres (CaCl 2 @Fe-Fc-HCPs) were successfully fabricated. CaCl 2 plays as water sorbent and Fe-Fc-HCPs act as photothermal components for rapidly water release. In CaCl 2 @Fe-Fc-HCPs composites, the dissolving CaCl 2 in the adsorbed water are effectively prevented, while the water adsorption capacity of the encapsulated CaCl 2 is improved. The amount of water adsorbed by CaCl 2 @Fe-Fc-HCPs (80% RH, 15 °C) is 2.685 g H2O /g CaCl2 , 2.23 times as that adsorbed by pristine CaCl 2 powder. Furthermore, the hollow structure Fe-Fc-HCPs MOFs favorable for loading CaCl 2 nanoparticles and facilitating mass transport. The adsorbed water can be easily released by a simulated solar light (one sun) due to the high efficient photothermal property of Fe-Fc-HCPs. The performance shows no degradation after 5 cycles, indicating its nice stability. This may provide a promising and cost-effective way to harvest water from air only powered by natural sunlight and offer new insights to combine photothermal MOFs with traditional adsorbents to design high-efficiency water generators.

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology offers a sustainable and innovative solution to address water scarcity in arid and remote regions, with its performance primarily dependent on the water adsorption capacity and kinetics of the adsorbent materials. However, conventional materials still face efficiency limitations under high-humidity conditions. Inspired by the unique hump structure of spider silk, this work innovatively develops bioinspired porous nanofibril-humped fibers (BPNF) through a green synthesis approach. The hierarchical porous architecture is constructed via radical polymerization and aqueous-phase in situ growth of MOF-303, eliminating the need for toxic reagents, while microfluidic spinning enables bionic hump structuring with minimal energy consumption. By integrating micro/nanochannels and hydrophilic surface modifications, the material achieves synergistic optimization of low diffusion resistance and high water harvest efficiency. MOF-303 is completed through in-situ hydrothermal growth and ensures the environmental friendliness of the synthesis process. Experimental results demonstrates that the BPNF achieves a remarkable water harvesting rate of 1.63 g cm −2 h −1 at 90–100 % RH, outperforming conventional materials by 2.3 times, with a 62 % reduction in carbon footprint. This work establishes a new paradigm for designing high-efficiency, sustainable AWH materials, combining biomimetic structural engineering with green manufacturing principles. This study provides insight into the design of novel AWH materials, which can be extended to some practical applications, e.g., water engineering in industry or agriculture systems.

Hydrophilic–hydrophobic hybrid wettability structures, inspired by desert beetles, have been widely designed to enhance the dewdrops’ migration under subcooled or/and high-humidity environment. However, it is still a challenge to regulate the graded distribution of the hydrophilic micro-regions for condensation applications. In this paper, we design a simple spray method to prepare the superamphiphilic–superamphiphobic hybrid wettability coatings by controlling the mass ratio (MR) of superamphiphobic SiO 2 nano-powder and superamphiphilic gypsum micro-powder. We compare the macroscopical wettability, condensation heat transfer efficiency, frosting delayed time and water harvesting rate to demonstrate the unique advantage of hybrid wettability structures. The results show that the condensation heat transfer efficiency, frosting delayed time and water harvesting rate can be respectively promoted to about 131.50% ( MR = 1 : 0 . 5 ) , 134.74% ( MR = 1 : 0 . 5 ) and 135.62% ( MR = 1 : 1 ) , although their macroscopical wettability will gradually reduce with the MR increase. This work will provide substantial insights into the fabrication of efficient superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic hybrid wettability surfaces for condensation heat transfer, anti-frosting and water harvesting applications.

Sorption-based atmosphere water harvesting (SAWH) is considered to be a promising solution to the global freshwater crisis. However, a high moisture absorption capacity, rapid moisture ab/desorption kinetics, and flexible desorption options are crucial for high-performance SAWH materials, but related research is scare. Here, a sandwich-structured atmosphere water harvester based on carbon cloth (CC), MXene nonosheets, sodium alginate (SA), and lithium chloride (LiCl) was fabricated via vacuum-assisted filtration and freeze-drying methods. On the one hand, the coordination of hygroscopic LiCl and porous film structure confer it with a high moisture absorption capacity and fast moisture absorption kinetics (moisture absorption of approximately 1.79 g g −1 after 4 h moisture absorption at 50 % RH, 25 °C); on the other hand, the conductive CC and photothermal MXene make it flexibly choose to release the absorbed water through solar irradiation (76 % of the absorbed water is released within 40 min, 1 kW m −2 ) or electrical heating (98 % of the absorbed water is leased within 10 min, 1.3 A). As a proof of concept, the daily water yield at 50 % RH with solar heating is approximately 7.01 kg kg −1 , which with electrical heating can reach 8.98 kg kg −1 in a lab environment, both of them are comparable to most of the hygroscopic salts-SAWH materials. The proposed sandwich-structured atmosphere water harvester with dual solar and electrical heating capacities has excellent moisture absorption performance and enriched water release routes, which has great means for designing of high-performance SAWH materials.

Seventy percent of global freshwater resources are consumed by agriculture, leading to severe water shortages due to the increasing demand for water in irrigated agriculture, which in turn poses a significant threat to food security. To address this challenge, innovative solutions are needed to optimize water use in agriculture. In this study, sodium lignosulfonate/chitosan/calcium chloride amphiphilic collection hydrogel (CSL-CaCl 2 ) is prepared. This hydrogel captures water from the atmosphere for soil water harvesting, thereby reducing the requirement for irrigation water. The hydrogel captures moisture from the air through its salt and porous structures, transferring it to a polymer network for storage. When exposed to daylight, the water-absorbed hydrogel is able to quickly release water into the soil, increasing the soil water content. The amount of water released from the hydrogel is 0.81 kg∙m −2 , equivalent to increasing the average annual precipitation in the temperate monsoon climate zone ( i.e. , Tianjin, China) by 51 %, which could effectively reduce the demand for agricultural irrigation water. The hydrogel not only promotes plant growth, but also has excellent water retention, improved soil physicochemical properties and exhibits excellent degradability. This work provides important insights for alleviating water shortages in irrigated agriculture.

Superamphiphobic coatings have been widely used in self-cleaning and antifouling materials because of their unique liquid repellency. In this study, magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles and resin were sprayed to construct hierarchical scales of texture, and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane was used to reduce surface free energy , and a biomimetic hair-like composite coating was prepared. The microstructure and chemical composition of the coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Both aqueous and oily liquid droplets can retain a perfectly quasispherical shape on the coating surface . The biomimetic hair-like composite coating exhibited superior water-collecting and superamphiphobic properties as well stable resistance against severe temperature, concentrated acidic, alkaline solutions and mechanical damages. This design strategy may provide useful guidelines for the fabrication of large-scale regular superamphiphobic surfaces.

Atmospheric water harvesting has emerged as an efficient strategy for addressing the global challenge of freshwater scarcity. However, the in being energy-consuming water-collecting process has obstructed its practicality. In this work, a soft drain bed, which was composed of hydrophilic cloth and hygroscopic gel, has been demonstrated to capture atmospheric water effectively, followed by converting it into liquid water spontaneously and sustainably, under all-weather humidity conditions. Under the optimal working condition of 30°C with a relative humidity level of 75%, the bed can provide a spontaneous water oozing ability of 1.25 g (liquid water) /hour within the 8 h of working time. More importantly, after 5 working cycles, 80% of the oozing ability can be reserved, suggesting the high potential for practical freshwater supply application. The proposed design strategy is expected to provide new hints for the development of future energy-saving decentralized freshwater supply systems.

Adsorption technologies for adsorption-based dehumidification and water harvesting from the atmosphere have great potential for energy-saving and environmental protection. The key to successful utilization of these technologies is desired properties of adsorbents. However, most existing adsorbents fail to have the characteristic of both high adsorption capacity and good desorption ability under low regeneration temperature such as at 40 °C. In this work, we grafted a thermo-responsive polymer (Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) PNIPAM) to silica gel and impregnated with lithium chloride to prepare a composite adsorbent. The adsorption capacity of this composite can reach 1.70 g g −1 at 20 °C&70%RH, and 56% of adsorbed moisture can be released within 60 min at 40 °C&10%RH. This method offers a promising route to develop high-performance thermo-responsive composite adsorbents for desiccant coated heat exchanger (DCHE)-based dehumidification and adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (ABAWH).

Hygroscopic salt-hydrogel-based atmospheric water harvesting (HAWH) technology represents an auspicious approach to alleviating the water crisis, as it is not limited by factors such as climactic. Reducing hygroscopic salt leakage is of the utmost importance to maintaining the technology's consistent performance. Consequently, we have developed a composite hygroscopic material (PPy-AAC-LiCl) with in situ loaded polypyrrole (PPy) as a photothermite. The in-situ loading of PPy not only achieves the photothermal performance of PPy-AAC-LiCl but also enhances the hygroscopic performance, which is due to the presence of nitrogen atoms in the structure facilitating the formation of hydrogen bonds between water molecules, and reduces the leakage of hygroscopic salts attributed to its ability to inhibit the increase in pore size after hygroscopicity of PPy-AAC-LiCl. The experimental results show that PPy-AAC-LiCl has effective hygroscopic performance at relative humidity (RH) of 30 %–90 %. The hygroscopicity at 25 °C and RH 70 % was about 1.53 g water g adsorbents −1 after 12 h. After ten hygroscopicity-desorption cycles, the hygroscopicity of the samples did not decrease significantly, and no white crystals appeared on the surface of the samples during the desorption process. Furthermore, PPy-AAC-LiCl demonstrated effective atmospheric water harvesting capabilities in outdoor trials, exhibiting a desorption rate of 87.6 % and a moisture absorption rate of 1.26 g water g adsorbents −1 . The preparation of this simple and environmentally friendly hygroscopic composite material lays the foundation for the future development of atmospheric water materials.

While harvesting water from the atmosphere is considered as a promising technology to address the increasing issue of water scarcity, its wide applications are still limited by the difficulty in mass production of water harvesting materials. Here, an industrial-producible asymmetric wettability patterned fabric (AWPF) with high water harvesting capacity is developed using a continuous and low-cost weaving technology. Four textile patterns are developed for high-efficiency atmospheric water harvesting. The alternating patterned surface in AWPF is constructed with hydrophilic bumps and hydrophobic grooves using one set of green fluorine-free superhydrophobic polyester warp yarns and two sets of superhydrophobic polyester/hydrophilic viscose weft yarns. We optimized the water collection performance of the single-sided AWPF by spraying co-MBAA-DVB superhydrophobic material on the back of the AWPF to construct a wetting gradient, that is, double-sided AWPF. The double-sided AWPF shows a strong water harvesting capacity of 2840.2 mg·6h −1 ·cm −2 , which increased the water harvesting efficiency by 43.2 % compared with the unoptimized single-sided AWPF. To reduce the pressure drop, 6 mm wide the double-sided AWPF was designed, resulting in a water harvesting capacity that is 1.23 times higher than that of without cutting. This advanced industrialized weaving technology with an asymmetric fabric structure design holds great potential for substantial water harvesting.

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represents an attractive way to alleviate water shortage stress in arid regions. However, scaling up such a concept has been partially limited by the insufficient development of the highly efficient heating and suitable processing of MOF sorbents for making them more applicable to AWH devices. To overcome these limitations, a commercial carbon fiber (CF) bundle is embedded into an Al-fumarate MOF monolith assisted by a cross-linked sodium alginate (SA) network, resulting in a cylindrical CF/Al-fumarate/SA (CAS) monolith with a coaxial structure. On applying electrical power, the embedded CFs could rapidly generate enormous localized electrical heating (LEH) within a CAS matrix with exceptionally high electrothermal conversion efficiency, thereby triggering the adsorbed water in CASs to be highly efficiently released in an energy-efficient way. In particular, such CAS monoliths can be easily connected to each other in either series or parallel, forming versatile CAS assemblies with well-controlled LEH capacity. Using a serial CAS assembly as atmospheric water sorbents, a newly atmospheric water harvester has been further developed based on an LEH-driven water desorption method. The resulting prototype enables to continuously work for 7.2 water harvesting cycles per day and deliver 1.7 and 1.2 LH2O kgAl-Fum/SA–1 daily water productivity under controlled indoor and outdoor conditions, corresponding to 4.4 and 6.2 kW·h LH2O–1 energy consumption, respectively. Please note that this is the first exploration in the use of flexibly assemblable MOF monoliths and the LEH-driven water desorption method for water production with AWH, demonstrating a promising way to achieve energy-efficient, scalable, low-cost, and industrially favorable AWH in arid areas.
