Passivation effect for current collectors enables high-voltage aqueous sodium ion batteries

Zhiguo Hou,Xueqian Zhang,Huaisheng Ao,Mengke Liu,Yongchun Zhu,Yitai Qian

The narrow electrochemical stability window (1.23 V) of electrolyte has hindered the development of aqueous sodium ion batteries greatly, especially the choice of electrode materials. Here, through theoretical calculation and experimental proof, it's found that the deposition of oxide films on both Al cathode and Ti anode current collectors exhibits strong passivation effect. When the thickness of Al 2 O 3 film on Al is about 3 nm and the thickness of TiO 2 film on Ti is about 5 nm, the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolyte can be expanded to 3.5 V. Therefore, TiS 2 with low working potential (1.5 V versus Na + /Na) can be used as anode material in aqueous sodium-ion battery for the first time. We assembled a full cell coupling TiS 2 anode with Prussian blue cathode in 15 M NaClO 4 aqueous electrolyte. The full cell of 2.6 V demonstrates cycle life up to 1000 times with high energy density (100 Wh kg −1 ) and high rate capability (30 C).

Ti3C2Tx film current collectors for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Jingyun Chun,Xiaolong Wang,Yuchan Zhang,Chuanliang Wei,Zhengran Wang,Jinkui Feng

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are ideal technologies for large-scale energy storage systems because of their abundant resources and low cost. However, Al foil, the current collector of sodium-ion battery, has a great influence on the performance of the battery, but it has rarely been studied. In this paper, we prove that the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene current collector can make a stronger connection with the electrode, lowering the electrode-collector interface resistance considerably. When compared to Al current collectors in SIBs, the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene current collector reduces polarization and enhances performance. the sodium vanadium phosphate(NVP) electrode with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene current collector exhibits significantly enhanced rate capability (81.9 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 ) and cycling performance (81.5% over 200 cycles at 1C) than Al foil. The results show that Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene current collector has a broad prospect in the application of high power SIB battery.

Super-three-dimensional lithiophilic Cu-based current collector for anode-free lithium metal battery

Nanrui Li,Tianqi Jia,Yanru Liu,Yunfei Ouyang,Yao Lv,Geng Zhong,Yufeng Wang,Bo Sun,Sirong Lu,Shifei Huang,Feiyu Kang,Yidan Cao

The formation of Li dendrites and dead Li, which causes short circuits, continuous side reactions, low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and thermal runaway, severely hinders the development of anode-free lithium metal batteries . Here, Cu-based current collector with super-three-dimensional lithiophilic modification layer is developed by the pyrolysis of resorcinol formaldehyde on 3D engineered copper mesh (a-RF@3D CM). The modification layer, consisting of highly dispersed CuO x sites in the O-containing defective carbon, together with the super-three-dimensional microstructure exhibits excellent lithiophilicity and capability to effectively reduce the nucleation overpotential, accommodate the uniform dendrite-free lithium deposition, promote stable and inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase formation, and improve the cycle stability. As a result, the a-RF@3D CM current collector exhibits reduced nucleation overpotential of 14.2 mV and prolonged cycling life over 400 cycles with average CE >98.5%. In the LiFePO 4 ||a-RF@3D CM anode-free cell, average CE of 99.50% and capacity retention of 60.66% are successfully achieved after 100 cycles. Meanwhile, average CE 99.78% and capacity retention of 64.43% are successfully achieved in LiFePO 4 ||Li@a-RF@3D CM cell (N/P = 1.6) after 200 cycles. The work provides feasible way to realize the fabrication of anode-free lithium metal batteries and also enhance the understanding of solid electrolyte interface evolution and regulation strategy of Li plating–stripping in advanced Li metal-based batteries.

Lightweight 3D-net Copper-Plated Polyimide Current Collector for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Tingyu Song,Yonggang Min

Graphical In this work, 3D-net copper-plated polyimide current collector was prepared through electroless plating method and obtained a structure of PI core and Cu shell. This novel current collector possesses a lightweight areal density. Three different Cu loading copper-coated PI CC samples was prepared and compared. The lithium-ion batteries assembled with Cu-PI CC 2 exhibit better performance. Current collector (CC) is an indispensable constituent in lithium-ion battery (LIB). It plays an important role in supporting electrode materials and conducting electrons between the electrode materials and the external circuit. However, the density of metal CC is high and it hinders the lightweight development of LIB. In this work, lightweight three-dimensional (3D) CC was designed and prepared via a facile electroless plating method. The 3D copper-plated polyimide CC has a low areal density. The 3D structure of Cu-PI CC 2 can facilitate Li + transfer between electrode materials and electrolyte owing to electrolyte can permeate through electrode. Moreover, the lithium titanate anode assembled with the 3D copper-plated polyimide Cu-PI CC 2 exhibited enhanced cycling and rate performance.

Study of the Corrosion Behavior of Cathode Current Collector in LiFSI Electrolyte

Zijie Yuan,Yongjing Wang,Yaqi Chen,Xiaodong Zhu,Shizhao Xiong,Zhongxiao Song

Graphical Corrosion of aluminum current collector is critical to the aging of lithium-ion batteries, particularly with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide based electrolyte. Our results show that corrosion currents in aluminum increase with cycling time and potential, correlating with changes in surface chemistry and morphology. Our findings provide valuable insights for advancing the development of lithium-ion batteries with long lifespan. Cycling aging is the one of the main reasons affecting the lifetime of lithium-ion batteries and the contribution of aluminum current collector corrosion to the ageing is not fully recognized. In general, aluminum is corrosion resistant to electrolyte since a non-permeable surface film of alumina is naturally formed. However, corrosion of aluminum current collector can still occur under certain conditions such as lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-based electrolyte or high voltage. Herein, we investigates the corrosion of aluminum current collector in the electrolyte of 1.2 M LiFSI in ethylene carbonate (EC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) mixed solvents. The electrochemical results shows that the corrosion current of aluminum is enhanced by cycling time and potential, which is correlated with the surface species and morphology. The formation of AlF 3 , which is induced by deep penetration of F − anions through surface passivation film, leads to internal volume change and the surface crack in the end. Our work will be inspiring for future development of high-energy-density and high-power-density lithium-ion batteries in which the LiFSI salt will be intensively used.

Rational design of high conductivity and robust associativity aluminum current collector based on polyaniline for lithium-ion battery

Yongqiang Jia,Lingling Zhang,Maoyi Han,Xunjie Wang,Yuxiang Shang,Zhendong Hao,Ti Liu,Mingfang Wu,Zhixin Ba

The interfacial interaction between active electrode materials and current collectors is a cornerstone in defining the electrochemical efficacy of lithium-ion batteries. In this investigation, we have designed a high conductivity and robust associativity aluminum current collector, through integrating a novel network-crater structure into the surface of aluminum current collector by adopting a hybrid technique that combines chemical etching, with the electrochemical polymerization of conductive polyaniline (PANI) films. Of particular interest, when the electrochemical polymerization cycle is optimized to 5 (P/E-Al-5), the resultant structure exhibits augmented wettability and an extraordinary interfacial adhesive strength, with a peel value of 417.0 N/m. This augmentation is ascribed to the synergistic influence of mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding at the interface between the aluminum current collector and the LiFePO 4 layers. Furthermore, the P/E-Al-5 current collector demonstrates commendable electrical conductivity, and the batteries incorporating this collector exhibit the least charge transport resistance. Consequently, the P/E-Al-5 current collector imparts enhanced electrochemical performance, distinguished by the highest rate capability and cycling stability. Impressively, at a high current rate of 5 C, the P/E-Al-5 collector manifests an average discharge capacity of 98.8 mAh g -1 , a 59% improvement over the unmodified aluminum sample (62.0 mAh g -1 ). Additionally, battery with the P/E-Al-5 current collector displays an elevated reversible discharge capacity, with a retention rate of 99.2%. This study provides an inspiration for the design of high-performance aluminum current collector.

Copper-coated Porous Polyimide as Ultralight and Safe Current Collectors for Advanced LIBs

Liu Cun-Sheng,Hu Jun-Qi,Mao Ting-Ting,Liao Song-Yi,Feng Ru-Ming,Liu Yi-Dong,Min Yong-Gang

Metallic copper is widely used as current collector (CC) for graphite anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, the large volume density of commercial copper foil (∼8.9 g·cm −3 ) limits the increase of energy density of battery. Here, copper-coated porous polyimide (Cu@PPI) was prepared by vacuum evaporation as collector for the graphite anode. The sandwich structure connects the copper metal on both sides of the collector with excellent electrical conductivity. Compared to commercial Cu foil, Cu@PPI has lighter mass (≤3.9 mg for disc of 12 mm diameter versus 9.9 mg of ∼10 µm Cu foil) and lower volume density (≤3.3 g·cm −3 ). In addition, the porous structure allows of better adhesion of reactive substances and electrochemical properties than pure Cu foils. It is estimated that the energy density of Cu@PPI should be much higher than that of Cu foil. This strategy should be applicable for other current collectors.

Three-Dimensional Ordered Macro/Mesoporous Cu/Zn as a Lithiophilic Current Collector for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode

Duo Zhang,Alvin Dai,Binfeng Fan,Yingen Li,Kang Shen,Teng Xiao,Guangya Hou,Huazhen Cao,XinYong Tao,Yiping Tang

Li dendrites are considered as the primary cause for degradation and inevitable short circuit in lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). Although contemporary strategies have shown potential for addressing dendrite growth, none have achieved complete elimination. In this paper, a dendrite-free, three-dimensional, ordered, macro/mesoporous Cu/Zn current collector was prepared using a combination of simple colloidal crystal template and electrochemical method (electrodeposition and pulse plating). When paired with a hierarchically structured mesoporous (20–50 nm) and macroporous (450 nm) anode, this novel current collector achieved stable charge/discharge cycles of over 2000 h and a small plating/stripping potential (≈8 mV) at a current density of 0.2 mA cm–2. Coulombic efficiencies (CE) also reached 94.7% after 400 cycles. This three-dimensional, ordered, macro/mesoporous structure provides a greater specific surface area, reduces local current density, and contains a lithiophilic Zn coating that serves as preferred Li nucleation sites. By combining these factors, dendrite-free Li deposition and superior electrochemical performance improvements in LMBs have been realized.

Application of a Sulfur Cathode in Nucleophilic Electrolytes for Magnesium/Sulfur Batteries

Linqi Zeng,Nan Wang,Jun Yang,JiuLin Wang,Yanna NuLi

We report the potential feasibility of a high-capacity and low-cost sulfur cathode that is compatible with nucleophilic electrolytes for Mg/S batteries. The electrochemical performance of sulfur in an easily prepared (PhMgCl)2-AlCl3/THF nucleophilic electrolyte depends on cathode current collectors. A sulfur cathode that uses Cu as a current collector, which is electrochemically stable in the range of operating voltage, exhibits an initial discharge capacity approximately corresponding to 659 mAh g−1, and maintains a reversible capacity of 113 mAh g−1 after 20 cycles at a current density of 10 mA g−1. It is different from the sulfur cathode with few capacities that uses stainless-steel as a current collector. Copper sulfides formed when sulfur is coated on a Cu current collector at 50°C provide a strong chemical interaction between Cu and sulfur, which protects sulfur and increases its compatibility with the electrolyte. A metal-stabilized sulfur cathode provides an effective approach to improve the electrochemical performance of Mg/S batteries in nucleophilic electrolytes.

Simultaneous peeling of precious metals in cathode and anode of spent ternary batteries using electrolysis

Hui Liu,Xuanrui Huang,Rui Tang,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu,Zhenhu Hu,Penghui Shi

Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is of great significance for both environmental protection and resource recycling. However, there are only a few studies on the simultaneous peeling and recycling of battery anode and cathode. Thus, this work proposed a new process for peeling cathode and anode in spent LIBs to solve this problem. The cathode and anode of the spent LIBs were used to form an electrolytic cell to simultaneously realize the peeling of the electrode materials and current collectors and a large amount of Li + leaching. The leaching rate of Li + reached 96.19 % under optimal conditions. In addition, the Li + in the electrolyte can be directly heated and concentrated to be recovered in the form of Li 2 CO 3 . Furthermore, the peeling of cathode materials was caused by the gas shock and defluorination of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). For the Li-free materials, the chemical separation and precipitation method was used to separate and recover Ni, Co, and Mn. In conclusion, this experiment carried out an environmentally friendly electrolysis recycling technique to realize the selective pre-recovery of Li + , the separation of electrode materials with current collectors, and the high purity recovery of current collectors. A new peeling mechanism for the electrolysis recycling technique was also explored. Therefore, this study was expected to provide a useful reference for the electrolysis recycling technique.

Lithiophilic Cu3Sn Modified Cu Foil as Current Collector for Stable Lithium Metal Anodes

Kaiwen Ma,Fangya Li,Xinbin Li,Ting Liu,Ting Wang,Huanlei Wang,Shuai Liu

Graphical In this study, a lithiophilic 3D Cu 3 Sn active sites modified commercial Cu foil as current collector is designed by electroplating and heat process, which could induce a uniform nucleation of Li metal. The obtained Li@Cu 3 Sn anode shows superior interface property and efficient Li metal deposition/stripping process. The development of lithium metal battery is severely restricted by its uncontrolled dendrite growth and volume change. In this work, we designed a controllable lithiophilic Cu 3 Sn modified commercial Cu foil as current collector via simple industrial electroplating and heat treatment. As a Li-reservoir substrate for efficient deposition/stripping of Li metal, the introduction of Cu 3 Sn not only increases multiple active sites for the deposition of Li, but also provides more transfer paths for lithium ions. The Li metal anodes prepared by molten Li on the Cu current collector with dispersed Cu 3 Sn active sites provide a uniform lithiophilic surface, which could effectively promote a uniform Li deposition/stripping and suppress the formation of lithium dendrites. As a result, the assembled symmetric battery is stable at a low over-point position for 1600 h without short circuit at 1 mA cm −2 with 1 mAh cm −2 , the full battery paired with LiFePO 4 still maintains a high-capacity retention rate of 97.1 % and a coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.5 % after 400 cycles at a current density of 2 C. This work provides a facile and controllable strategy for the design of current collectors with high lithium affinity for stable lithium metal anode applications.

Energy-dense aqueous Zn//MnO2 rechargeable battery constructed on dual three-dimensional conductive skeletons

Ying Wu,Bei Yan,Yiran Liu,Jingyi Kong,Xiang Lin,Min Gong,Liang Zhang,Dongrui Wang

Enhancing the energy density of aqueous rechargeable zinc-based batteries is critical for boosting their application in a variety of practical scenarios. Herein we demonstrate a strategy to improve specific energies of Zn//MnO 2 batteries in mild electrolyte via utilizing three-dimensional (3D) current collectors for both the anode and cathode. By electrodepositing limited amounts of Zn on surface-alloyed Ag mesh and coupling it with MnO 2 cathode electrodeposited on carbon cloth with no binder, the resultant batteries exhibit specific energy up to 253 and 196 Wh/kg (based on total mass of active materials) at negative-to-positive electrode capacity (N/P) ratios of 1:1 and 2:1. By elevating the working temperature to 35 °C, the specific energy and life span of the battery with N/P = 2 can be further increased to 216 Wh/kg and >225 cycles, respectively. The key to achieving a high specific energy relies primarily on the great reversibility of the Zn anode, which is conferred by the 3D Ag mesh.
