WO3-based slippery coatings with long-term stability for efficient fog harvesting

Haifeng Fan,Zhiguang Guo

Inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plants, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have attracted wide attention and exhibited remarkable liquid repellency, droplet motion control and antifouling properties. However, lubricant-impregnated surfaces have poor durability, leading to loss of control of the movements of droplets during applications. Herein, WO 3 -based slippery coatings with high stability were prepared by the spray method and photocatalytic reaction. Notably, on the basis of the hierarchical structures, the strong intermolecular forces between the polydimethylsiloxane brush and silicone oil led to the formation of a stable lubricant layer on the WO 3 -based slippery coating, which can suppress lubricant loss during water collection. After a series of stability tests, such as high-speed centrifugation, long-term storage, acidic solution and multiple heating/cooling cycles, the biomimetic slippery surface still displays excellent surface-slippery stability. Furthermore, the slippery surface exhibits superior water mist capture, water droplet expansion and harvested water removal abilities, leading to good water collection performance. The silicone oil content in the collected water was 28 mg/L, demonstrating that the loss of oil was lower during the water collection process. Even under harsh environments, including multiple heating/cooling cycles, long-term storage and high shear force, lubricant-impregnated coatings can also maintain good water collection efficiency. Therefore, these slippery coatings are promising for widespread application.

Biomimetic Surface Inspired by Multiple Natural Prototypes for Efficient Fog Water Collection

Yanru Zheng,Yifan Yan,Yuting Du,Fuchao Yang,Zhiguang Guo

The challenge of alleviating the water scarcity crisis is a serious problem faced worldwide. Harvesting water from atmospheric fog is an intriguing process. Taking inspiration from the multilayered micro-nanostructure of Phyllostachys leaves and the wetting gradient of spider silk combined with the leaf vein like pattern, a biomimetic system with hybrid and gradient wetting surfaces was designed and manufactured using laser etching technology and gradient anodizing technology. Under the synergistic effect of wetting driving force and gravity, the discharge of droplets was accelerated, thereby improving the efficiency of fog water collection, which is about 80% higher than the control sample. This sample integrates droplet capture, coalescence, and transportation functions, providing a new approach for the design of efficient mist collectors.

A new Janus mesh membrane with ultrafast directional water transportation and improved fog collection

Shiyu Song,Yan Zhang,Tianlu Yu,Jianlin Yang

Fog collection materials have been intensively investigated and can potentially be used to alleviate freshwater shortages. However, developing highly efficient fog collection materials remains challenging. Requisite improvements in fog collection technology are the ultrafast transportation of captured water and the effective regeneration of fresh regions on the surfaces of fog collection materials. Herein, a novel Janus mesh membrane (JMM) with an alternating hydrophobic–superhydrophilic-patterned hydrophobic surface and asymmetric wettability interface is prepared by a selective liquid-phase surface oxidation strategy. The unique structure and high-contrast wettability of the JMM enable ultrafast directional transportation of tiny water droplets (< 0.1 μL), thereby achieving an excellent water collection efficiency of 15.28 g h −1 cm −2 , which is much higher than those of conventional Janus membranes. The JMM functioned as a versatile fog collector and maintained continuous fog collection regardless of the fog flow direction. This study offers a novel approach for preparing innovative fog collection materials and establishes a foundation for developing advanced fog collection systems suitable for diverse applications.

Efficient and Stable Fog Harvesting through Slippery-Superhydrophilic Patterned Surfaces: Pattern Regulation and Optimization

Lizhi Zhao,Xiaofu Wang,Lixian Wang,Shuhao Chen,Guangyue Du,Baitao Xu,Hui Ye,Qingping Xin,Yuzhong Zhang

The scarcity of freshwater resources has emerged as a significant challenge for humanity. Fog harvesting, a process that converts atmospheric fog into readily accessible water, presents a promising solution. However, the surfaces currently developed for fog collection still face the problems of low efficiency and poor stability. To address these issues, this study designed a biomimetic hydrophobic slippery-superhydrophilic (SLIPS-SHPH) patterned surface. The surface was fabricated by a masked spray coating and lubricant infusion. By refining the pattern design, the wedge-shaped SHPH patterns, with a smaller size and an optimized total area ratio to SLIPS in a dispersed arrangement, were created. The SLIPS-SHPH integrates beetle- and cactus-spine-inspired SHPH patterns for fog accretion/droplet motion and pitcher-plant-mimicking SLIPS for droplet delivery/detachment. This synergy enables an efficient cycle of “fog capture-droplet transport-droplet release”, and achieves a water collection efficiency of 2462 mg·h–1·cm–2, 1.75 times that of the homogeneous hydrophobic surface. Notably, the SLIPS-SHPH patterned surface demonstrates excellent stability over a 120 h testing period owing to the stable water repellence of SLIPS. The research on the multilevel biomimetic strategies and pattern regulation provides a feasible way for efficient and sustainable fog collection.

Nanoscale Drag Reduction Effect Enables Efficient Fog Harvesting

Yating Ji,Weifeng Yang,Xiaoyan Li,Yunfan Xue,Jie Wang,Yinjie Chen,Bi Xu,Zaisheng Cai

Surfaces with macro-scale hydrophilic/hydrophobic regions (conventional Janus mode) are often considered as prime candidates for fog harvesting. However, the water collection efficiency of such surfaces frequently fails to meet the requirements of practical applications due to the occurrence of surface flooding caused by water droplet pinning. Here, an in situ molecular confined modification strategy is proposed to construct upgraded Janus mode for achieving nanoscale drag reduction effect, thereby improving the fog collection efficiency. Specifically, nanoscale hydrophilic sites are designed to effectively reduce the critical volume size required for water droplets to slide off, thus avoiding the surface flooding. Fibers with upgraded Janus mode (PAN-TO) realize a water collection rate of 4035 mg cm −2 h −1 , markedly exceeding that of most materials with conventional Janus mode. Moreover, the high interface bonding strength between hydrophilic sites and the material surface can withstand the impact of water and sand flushing, ensuring the long-term usability of the material. The applications of PAN-TO fibers in irrigation and dyeing are demonstrated. This work shows a nanoscale surface engineering proposal for building a next-generation fibrous fog harvesting device.

Special Fog Collection Mode Achieved on Integrative Multi-bioinspired Hierarchically Grooved Surface with Liquid Bridge Assistance

Zhuan Chen,Wei Sun,Qiang Luo,Hongtao Liu,Yining Wang,Yongping Hou,Yongmei Zheng

Natural organisms have inspired many recent studies in fog collection. Most materials undergo three sequential steps during fog collection: fog capture, coalescence and transportation. Finally, captured droplets intermittently detach from the surface only when they reach substantial volume, solely via gravity, which may result in low capture efficiency and surface refresh rate, hindering fog collection efficiency. Herein, inspired by the Namib desert beetle back, Sarracenia trichome, liquid bridges (LB) in shore birds’ beak and the hierarchical structures of natural liquid transportation systems, we design a LB assisted fog collection system (LBAFCS) using hierarchically grooved surfaces (HGS). The introduction of LB could not only potentially merge the coalescence and transportation steps in conventional fog collection into a combined removal step, presenting a special fog collection mode, but could also allow droplets to be removed without needing to grow to a larger volume, leading to higher surface refresh rate. Increasingly hierarchically arranged grooves on the samples surface could significantly increase the removal frequency of droplets, also resulting in higher surface refresh rate. The results indicate, compared with a 0 mm LB, a 4 mm length LB can facilitate droplet removal via the hydrophilic regions and grooves on the sample, with a respective 16% and 10% increase in droplet penetration velocity and flux. We achieve a 14.7 kg m-2 h-1 fog collection efficiency on our 3rd-groove sample with 4 mm LB, 2.75 times more than on the same sample without a LB (conventional collection mode), and 1.38 times that with 0 mm LB.

Molecularly Copper-Coordinated Cellulose Heterogeneous Wettability Surface Induced Efficient Fog Harvesting

Zhang Jinping,Du Peibo,Li Xiaoyan,Liu Weiguang,Li Chengcheng,Ji Yating,Zeng Chuan,Zong Dandan,Cai Zaisheng

The development of efficient fog-harvesting materials is of great significance for addressing freshwater scarcity. However, conventional materials with hydrophilic/hydrophobic regions frequently struggle with coordinating water droplet capture and transport, resulting in lower water collection efficiency. Herein, an integrated strategy based on the engineering of cellulose molecular modification for achieving high-performance fog harvesting is presented. The well-designed cellulose heterogeneous wettability surface (CWF-Cu), through the coordination of copper ions with nanofibrils and masking-assisted spray technique, significantly facilitates water capture and transport for fog harvesting. The copper ions are introduced into the cotton fabric, endowing it with high hydrophobicity (with a contact angle of approximately 130°) and polarity, which regulates wettability and increases potential nucleation sites. The as-prepared CWF-Cu fabric realizes a superior water collection rate (WCR) of 2672 mg·cm −2 ·h −1 , increasing by 70% compared with those of the conventional hydrophobic materials. Moreover, the CWF-Cu fabric demonstrates stable performance to withstand the impact of water and pollutant flushing, and enhanced mechanical strength and ultraviolet (UV) durability, which ensures the long-term usability of the material. This work provides an efficient route to achieving efficient fog harvesting that addresses water scarcity from the environment.

Multi-biomimetic cellulose-based regenerated fibers from scalable wet spinning for ultrahigh-efficiency rate fog harvesting

Chao Duan,Yuanmei Liu,Jinyu Guo,Yan Li,Yijian Wen,Yiyang Che,Xiaoshuang Liu,Kang Yang,Yonghao Ni

Bioinspired fog harvesting materials offer a promising solution to freshwater scarcity. However, the integration of diverse biomimetic structures for ultrahigh fog harvesting collection rate remains challenging. This work presents a facile and scalable fabrication process for cellulose-based fog harvesting fiber (PSF) with multiple biomimetic features. The process involves wet spinning of cellulose and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), followed by dip-coating with cellulose and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Selective leaching of PVP can create microgrooves on fiber surface mimicking cactus spine structure, while dip-coating forms spindle knots and wettability gradients inspired by spider silk and Nepenthes pitcher. It is hypothesized that these bioinspired features enhance Laplace pressure differentials, wettability and curvature gradients, eventually facilitating the fog harvesting collection rate in terms of fog adsorption/capture, water film formation, droplet transport and shedding. Consequently, the resultant PSF achieves an exceptional fog collection rate of 180.62 g/cm 2 /h, 47 times higher than conventional spider silk. This study offers a novel insight and a scalable model for multi-biomimetic fog harvesting systems.

Bioinspired Janus Mesh with Gradient Wettability for High-Efficiency Fog Harvesting via Synergistic Capillary Condensation and Directional Droplet Transport

Junlan Liang,Hongde Zhu,Shaojun He,Zhiguang Guo

To tackle the challenges of inadequate environmental compatibility and insufficient wettability gradient in the Janus structure used for current fog water collection. This study, inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plants, cacti, and mesophyll tissues, developed a bioinspired Janus mesh based on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-Ca 2+ /palmitic acid. Through ionic cross-linking and solvent-induced crystallization processes, an asymmetric interface with a 138° wettability gradient is constructed. By synergizing capillary condensation and Laplace pressure differences, rapid directional transport of fog droplets within 0.07 s is achieved. The Janus mesh demonstrates fog collection efficiencies of 0.72 and 1.80 g cm −2 min −1 under vertical and 15° inclined conditions, respectively, which are 2.06 and 5.1 times those of the original stainless steel mesh. This research integrates high-efficiency water collection with environmental friendliness, offering a new paradigm for arid regions, and its design concept can be extended to other domains.
