Zero Waste-acid Emission Synthesis of PANI and Composite Fillers for Enhanced Anticorrosion Performance of the Epoxy Coatings

Yuchao Mao,Ruitao Wang,Zihua Wang,Xingxing Ni,Huaiyuan Wang

A novel approach of fully recycling waste acid to synthesize polyaniline (PANI) and the composite fillers is introduced. The filtrates in washing procedure were precisely divided and assigned to synthesize PANI, purify PANI and fabricate composite fillers with different nanostructures, respectively. The PANI utilizing this zero-acid emission method presents similar performances compared with the newly-synthesized one. The epoxy coating embedded with PANI and 30   wt% of composite fillers of sericite/BaSO 4 by the recycling method shows excellent anticorrosion performance via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and neutral salt spray tests due to excellent barrier and passivation effects. These findings provide a new method to produce PANI and composite fillers for anticorrosion coatings of high performance through the low-cost and large-scale manufacturing process.

Zero–Waste Recycling of Fiber/Epoxy from Scrap Wind Turbine Blades for Effective Resource Utilization

Chunbao Du,Ge Jin,Lihui Zhang,Bo Tong,Bingjia Wang,Gang Zhang,Yuan Cheng

The number of scrap wind turbines is expanding globally as the wind power industry develops rapidly. Zero–waste recycling of scrap wind turbine blades (WTB) is the key for wind power firms to achieve green and sustainable development on the premise of satisfying environmental protection criteria. In this work, the pyrolysis of fiber/epoxy composites obtained from scrap WTB in oxidizing inert atmospheres was investigated. Various characterization methods were employed to characterize the microstructure and chemical characteristics of the heat–treated fiber/epoxy and to reveal the pyrolysis mechanism. In addition, the heat–treated fibers/epoxy were used as reinforcing agents to investigate their impact on the elastic deformation of butadiene styrene rubber–based flexible composites, and the reinforcing mechanism was revealed. The results revealed that the constituents of fiber/epoxy composites were mostly fiberglass (SiO2, CaCO3) and cured epoxy resin, with covalent bonding being the interaction between the fiberglass and epoxy resin. The total weight of the epoxy resin in the fiber/epoxy composites was 22%, and the 11% weight loss was achieved at around 350 °C, regardless of the presence of oxygen; however, the features of heat–treated fibers/epoxy were associated with the pyrolysis atmosphere at a higher temperature. The pyrolysis products in inert atmospheres, with water contact angles of 58.8°, can considerably improve the tensile properties of flexible composites at the elastic stage. Furthermore, the flexible composite granules were prepared to plug large channels in sand–filled pipes, and the plugging rate had the potential to reach 81.1% with an injection volume of 5.0 PV. The plugging performance was essentially unaffected by water salinity, owing to the high stability of flexible composite granules in mineralized water. The findings of this study present a realistic route to the industrial application of fiber/epoxy, as well as a novel approach for encouraging the efficient use of scrap wind turbines on a large scale.

Bacterial cellulose and photothermal material from biomass-based zero-waste biorefinery functionalized chitosan film for sustainable active food packaging

Li Yang,Wenyang Sheng,Yichen Yang,Ying Yang,Kaiwen He,Guangyang Jiang,Yongqiang Tian

In this study, a multifunctional food packaging film was developed using distillers' grains (DG) through a sustainable, zero-waste biorefinery approach. The objectives were to reduce foodborne contamination, lower manufacturing costs, and enhance the value of DG. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was produced by fermenting the hydrolyzed DG supernatant and then oxidized to form oxidized bacterial cellulose (OBC). OBC was combined with chitosan (CS) to create a CS/OBC composite film. Additionally, a photothermal material, FeDL, was synthesized from DG's enzymatic residue (primarily lignin) and ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. Various concentrations of FeDL were incorporated into the CS/OBC matrix. Characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal analysis confirmed good compatibility between FeDL and CS/OBC, with slight improvements in thermal stability and tensile strength (TS). The film containing 0.3 mg/mL FeDL achieved a 37.21% reduction in UV transmittance, a 26.81% decrease in water vapor permeability (WVP), and a 175.08% increase in antioxidant activity compared to the CS/OBC film. Under brief near-infrared light (NIR) exposure, the film enabled pasteurization, extending the shelf life of strawberries by approximately 1.75 times. The films also demonstrated biosafety and biodegradability, offering a novel zero-waste biorefining solution from waste biomass.

Zero-waste utilization and conversion of shrimp shell by mechanochemical method

Wenjing Su,Wenhao Xu,Nikolay E. Polyakov,Alexandr V. Dushkin,Pei Qiao,Weike Su

In this study, a moderate method for efficient zero-waste utilization and reforming from shrimp shell waste was developed by means of mechanochemistry. The method enables the conversion of shrimp shell waste into astaxanthin , chitin , small peptides, amino acids, and lipids for zero waste; the method uses green mechano-enzymatic hydrolysis and mechanical solid organic acid treatment of shrimp shell waste to achieve zero consumption of strong acids alkali, and organic solvent. The underlying mechanism was revealed by thermodynamic determination, spectroscopic analysis , and electron microscopy observation of the extraction process. In the research, a green economic reuse approach for crustacean waste is proposed to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6, 12 and 14 with the concept of circular economy(Sutherland et al., 2021), and this study proposes a green economic reuse method of crustacean waste.
