Controlled synthesis of samarium iron oxide for dual-function laser and radar stealth applications

Longfei An,Yan Shan,Congmin Yang,Kezheng Chen,Xuegang Yu

In modern detection technology, the integration of lidar and microwave radar significantly increases the risk of exposure for high-value military equipment. Developing materials with multi-band stealth compatibility is a critical countermeasure to mitigate detection risks. In this study, a brownish-yellow samarium iron oxide material compatible with both 1.06 μm laser stealth and radar stealth was synthesized using the co-precipitation method, whose properties can be tuned by varying the raw material ratios. When the samarium-to-iron (Sm:Fe) ratio was 3:7, the primary crystalline phase was Sm 3 Fe 5 O 12 . Conversely, at Sm:Fe ratios of 1:1, the primary crystalline phase shifted to perovskite-type SmFeO 3 . Notably, Sm 3 Fe 5 O 12 material, prepared with a samarium-to-iron molar ratio of 3:7 and sintered at 800°C, demonstrated a reflectivity of 29.6 % at 1064 nm and excellent microwave absorption performance at 14.64 GHz, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −24.56 dB at a thickness of 4 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth of 1.36 GHz (13.76–15.12 GHz). This study provides a simple method for synthesizing brownish – yellow magnetic samarium iron oxide, which shows wide application in laser stealth, radar stealth and visual camouflage in plateau desert environments.

Multilaminate metastructure for high-temperature radar-infrared bi-stealth: Topological optimization and near-room-temperature synthesis

Zhimin An,Yiping Li,Xiaoguang Luo,Yixing Huang,Rubing Zhang,Daining Fang

A multifunctional stealth technology compatible with infrared and radar is one of the most feasible ways to improve the survival of military equipment under high-temperature conditions. However, it is difficult to effectively integrate multiple functions into one material owing to the contradictory stealth mechanisms of infrared and radar. Herein, the near-room-temperature integrated preparation of a hierarchical metastructure with high-temperature resistance, broadband microwave absorption, and infrared stealth is realized by combining topological optimization of metastructure and a papermaking method. The tailored metastructure exhibits an effective bandwidth and absorption peak of 3.1 GHz and −25.9 dB at 1,000°C. The excellent thermal insulation allows the metastructure to achieve infrared stealth, which can reduce the radiation temperature of an object from 1,200°C to 340°C. The new technology paves the way for the design and preparation of a radar-infrared bi-stealth metastructure applied to high temperature.

A skin-beyond multifrequency camouflage system with self-adaptive discoloration and radar-infrared stealth

Zicheng Zhang,Qiye Wang,Zifan Li,Zhe Zhou,Xinyi Xie,Hongchao Sun,Chen Chen,Min Wang,Xuemei Dong,Yueyue Wu,Zixi He,Bin Liu,Xinkai Qian,Junyue Li,Li Wang,Fei Xiu,Juqing Liu,Wei Huang

Camouflage technology could enhance the safety and security of desirable targets by concealing their signatures from the microwave, vision, infrared detection methods. However, conventional single-band camouflage fails to align with the current trends toward multi-band compatibility and intelligent adaptation. Here a bioskin-inspired multifrequency camouflaging system, including an artificial multispectral camouflage skin and an adaptive processing unit, was designed to simultaneously achieve infrared, radar, and adaptive visual stealth. This skin adopts a vertically stacked structure and utilizes a square patterned indium tin oxide for infrared stealth, a sector-box nesting silver nanowire-graphene (AgGr) metasurface for radar stealth, and a light-controlled AgGr heater to drive thermochromic displays for visible stealth. The system achieves multiband compatible properties with ultralow infrared emissivity of 0.24, high and broad microwave absorption in the 10 GHz-37.5 GHz region, and highly self-adaptive discoloration in response to background-color changes. Our work provides a reliable all-in-one design in flexible smart optoelectronics for future camouflage skin.

Impact of Defect-Rich Carbon Nanofibers Combined with Magnetic Materials on Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Radar Cross-Section Reduction

Ibrahim Abdalla,Ahmed Elhassan,Salma Ali,Malik Yonis Hassan Saty,Ekrema Adam,Lihua Zou,Qingqing Ni,Zhenzhen Xu

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit inherent dielectric properties that enhance electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption, yet challenges exist in expanding their effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) and improving flexibility. Many studies fail to adequately consider how structural factors influence performance when combining CNFs with magnetic materials. To address these issues, a 1D carbon nanocomposite is developed by embedding magnetic oxide nanoparticles within CNFs using a simple electrospinning technique. This approach improves membrane flexibility by disrupting rigid alignment and introducing dynamic magnetic interactions, while also creating defect-rich interfaces that increase the amorphous content (61%) of the CNFsF composite, leading to improved EM wave absorption. The unique macro/mesoporous morphology provides internal interfaces and heterogeneous boundaries that effectively trap and dissipate EM waves. As a result, the flexible CNF composites demonstrate significant EM wave absorption performance, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −39.8 dB at 4.64 GHz and an abroad EAB of up to 7 GHz at only 2.5 mm thickness. Computer simulation technology (CST) simulations indicate a maximum radar cross-section reduction of 21.1 dB m 2 , highlighting the material's radar stealth capability. This research advances the development of high-performance materials and offers new strategies for enhancing absorption properties through composite engineering.

Interfacial and Defective Construction from Diverse CuxSy Quantum Dots toward Broadband Carbon-Based Microwave Absorber

Zhihao Sun,Zihao Guo,Shaoyao Tian,Jingyu Bi,Guangshen Li,Ying Sha,Jianshu Wang,Lanling Zhao,Lei Qian

In this study, highly monodisperse copper sulfide (CuxSy) quantum dots (QDs) have been successfully obtained using a ligand-chemistry strategy, and then a variety of S-deficient CuxSy/nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) heterointerfaces are constructed by compositional fine-tuning (Cu9S5 → Cu1.96S → Cu). First-principles calculations show that the S-deficient domains of CuxSy QDs and N-doped domains of carbon synergistically enhance the electron transfer from CuxSy to NC. In addition, the finite element simulations demonstrate that the diverse CuxSy QDs exhibit their intrinsic size and dielectric confinement effects to precisely manipulate the electric field distortion and improve the relaxation polarization. Consequently, CuxSy@NC achieves excellent impedance matching and a strong loss mode dominated by dielectric polarization. Among them, CuxSy@NC-650 has a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 7.7 GHz at 2.5 mm, while CuxSy@NC-700 features a minimum reflection loss of −66.7 dB at 13.7 GHz, respectively. Furthermore, the simulations of radar cross-sections have confirmed that the CuxSy@NC series is promising in the field of radar stealth.

Interface engineering of Fe/Fe3C@C magnetic-carbon composites for superior microwave absorption

Yihui Zhou,Jin Qian,Zhe Qiang,Weiqing Kong,Changhuai Ye,Meifang Zhu

Heterogeneous interfaces are crucial for enhancing the polarization loss in composite materials, thereby improving microwave absorption capabilities. However, creating well-defined multiple heterogeneous interfaces essential for optimal absorber performance presents a significant challenge. Herein, Fe/Fe 3 C@C magnetic-carbon composites featuring Fe-Fe 3 C-C multiple heterogeneous interfaces were fabricated through in-situ growth of Fe 3 O 4 on polydopamine nanospheres, followed by thermal reduction and carbonization. Owing to the controllable Fe-Fe 3 C-C multiple heterointerface design, the outer-layer magnetic components not only significantly improve impedance matching but also enhance the interface polarization loss. The optimized Fe/Fe 3 C@C-9–1 composite exhibits excellent microwave absorption performance, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −64.4 dB and a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.0 GHz at a thin matching thickness of only 1.5 mm, surpassing neat carbon nanospheres and most magnetic-carbon materials. Additionally, simulations conducted using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) demonstrate that the Fe/Fe 3 C@C-9–1 coating significantly reduces radar cross-section (RCS), with values below −20 dB across nearly the entire frequency range of 2–18 GHz, highlighting its potential for radar stealth applications. This work provides a simple yet effective approach for tuning the interface properties of carbon-based materials, underscoring the promise of Fe-Fe 3 C-C multiple heterogeneous interfaces in the development of broadband, thin microwave absorbers.

Ultralight, highly elastic ZrO2/carbon fiber reinforced reduced graphene oxide aerogels with radar and infrared stealth capabilities

Xiaoqing Yin,Yanyan Wang,Nan Pang,Chenhui Liu,Yong Xu,Meijie Yu,Chuanjian Zhou

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels have attracted extensive attention due to their unique physical properties, but their poor mechanical properties and insufficient functionality hinder their further application. In this study, we propose a strategy for fiber-reinforced rGO aerogels for mechanical enhancement and multifunctional applications. We fabricated carbon fibers (CFs) modified with zirconia (ZrO 2 ) particles to enhance rGO aerogels. The resulting aerogels exhibit exceptional lightweight characteristics (8.62 mg cm −3 ) and high compressive deformation up to 90 % (320 kPa), and a low thermal conductivity of 25.3 mW m −1  K −1 . Simultaneously, the aerogel demonstrates excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −62.99 dB at 3.4 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 8.19 GHz. The introduction of ZrO 2 achieves three ends with a single effort: it enhances mechanical performance, disrupts thermal conduction pathways within the aerogel framework while simultaneously optimizing impedance matching. This synergistic effect enables dual-band compatibility for radar-infrared stealth applications, demonstrating significant potential for aerospace applications.

Enhanced microwave absorption using multiple heterostructures derived from in-situ grown Sn-metal-organic framework on La-doped Fe3O4

Huiliang Wen,Wei Xu,Sen Lin,Aiguo Guan,Yingna Zhang,Xin Li,Chongbo Liu

As a representative magnetic oxide absorber, Fe 3 O 4 has attracted considerable research attention owing to its remarkable magnetic saturation strength as well as semiconducting properties. Doping Fe 3 O 4 with La 3+ leads to 3d-4f magnetic coupling and ion distribution changes due to the unique electron configuration and large ionic radius of La 3+ , thereby greatly enhancing the magnetic performance. However, high density, low dielectric loss, and low permeability at high frequencies inhibit the electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) performance of ferrites. In this study, stick-shaped Sn metal-organic framework (MOF) is in-situ grown on La 3+ -doped Fe 3 O 4 using a surfactant. After high-temperature annealing, the SnO 2 /porous carbon composites derived from Sn-MOF wrap the ferrite, forming a core-shell heterostructure, which not only prevents oxidation but also enhances the EMWA performance. Among the prepared La x Fe 3-x O 4 /SnO 2 /C (LFSC) samples, LFSC-2 (with La x Fe 3-x O 4 to Sn-MOF ratio of 1:2) exhibits strong absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −44.1 dB. Furthermore, the gradient metamaterial based on LFSC-3 shows ultra-broadband EMWA with an effective absorption bandwidth ( RL min  ≤ −10 dB) of 13.17 GHz. In addition, the LFSC-2 sample demonstrates excellent radar stealth capability in the radar cross section (RCS) far-field response, achieving an RCS reduction value of 20.4 dB∙m 2 .

Electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of Short carbon fiber/Bismaleimide foams Metamaterial

Lu Feng,Shicheng Jin,Wanchong Li,Yan Wang,Yu Mao

The development of broadband electromagnetic wave absorbing materials often faces challenges due to constraints such as thickness and mechanical integrity. To address these issues, this study has engineered and fabricated a Short Carbon Fiber (SCF)/Bismaleimide (BMI) foam Metamaterial (MM). This composite is composed of a crosshatch metal pattern, reinforced with glass fiber plastic (GFRP), and a BMI foam matrix infused with SCF as a functional filler. The electromagnetic field distribution and input impedance analysis indicate that the crosshatch metal pattern is adept at modulating the impedance of the SCF/BMI foam, thereby influencing the field distribution. This material demonstrates superior absorption characteristics, with reflectivity levels below −10 dB across the 5–18 GHz frequency range, achieved with a mere 4.7 mm thickness. Moreover, the designed material maintains outstanding performance even under oblique incidence, and it exhibits commendable thermal stability and mechanical robustness. The findings suggest that the proposed SCF/BMI foam MM has promising potential for applications in radar stealth technology for various targets.

The microwave absorption properties variation with temperature of RF/SiO2 and improved microwave absorption by periodic structure

Xinli Ye,Jianqing Xu,Shan Li,Xiaomin Ma,Bangxiao Mao,Junxiong Zhang,Kai Zheng

With the widespread application of radar detection systems in the military field, the development of radar stealth technology can effectively reduce the characteristic signals of targets, which was of great significance for the protection of important military targets. In this paper, the resorcinol/formaldehyde (RF) reinforced silica aerogel (RF/SiO 2 ) was synthesized successfully. The RF was introduced into the sol/gel technology to build a porous skeleton, and the SiO 2 aerogel was prepared by atmospheric pressure drying. The RF/SiO 2 aerogel was then heat treated, and the microstructure and physical properties of the RF/SiO 2 aerogel before and after heat treatment were characterized to study the influence of the heat treatment temperatures on the RF/SiO 2 aerogel. With the increase of the heat treatment temperature, its electromagnetic wave absorption performance had been significantly improved. When the heat treatment temperature reached 1500 ℃, the RF/SiO 2 aerogel possessed a minimum reflection loss of − 36.42 dB at 1.95 mm and an effective bandwidth of 2.94 GHz at 2.00 mm within the radar band of 8.00–12.00 GHz. In addition, this paper used CST software to optimize and design the periodic structure of metamaterial based on the RF/SiO 2 aerogel. The optimization design of the patch size and substrate thickness on the substrate surface provided a reference for the future application of this material in specific radar stealth fields.

Phytic acid-assisted hybrid engineering of MOF-derived composites for tunable electromagnetic wave absorption

Xiang Zhang,Kai Yao,Xiao Wang,Jinli Wang,Hongtao Guo,Xiaona Ma,Yang Yang,Hongjing Wu,Wei Lu

Hybrid engineering is gradually deemed as a powerful approach to solving the bottleneck problem of metal-organic framework (MOF) derived absorbers for practical application. Herein, a new type of semiconductor/carbon-based hybrid material was successfully prepared by phytic acid (PA) modification and carbonization of MOF/bacterial cellulose (BC) precursors, which remedied the drawbacks of structural instability, lethal byproducts and complicated steps reported previously. Specifically, the obtained Fe(PO 3 ) 2 @C/phosphorus-doped carbon foam (Fe(PO 3 ) 2 @C/PCF) had a 3D hybrid micro-nanostructure that integrated spatial microcurrent network, multi-level pores, heterogeneous interfaces and lattice defects, showing its unique advantages of low filler content (15 wt.%), moderate surface reflectivity, multi-band microwave absorption and radar stealth. The experimental analysis and CST simulation further revealed that PA dosage can precisely adjust the hybrid phase content, pore texture and electromagnetic parameters of the final product to achieve synergistic enhancement of multiple dielectric response, impedance matching and attenuation capacity. As a result, an effective bandwidth (EAB) of 6 GHz and a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.0 dB were obtained in the Ku- and C-bands, respectively. These encouraging results may advance the development of novel MOF-derived absorbents based on the hybridization principle.

Cleaner Production of Core–Shell Fe3O4 for Enhancing the Fire Safety, Electromagnetic Wave Absorption, and Radar Stealth Performance of Polyurea

Yaru Sun,Jun Wang,Yan Liu,Chao Liu,Bo Cheng,Ying Hou,Quanlin Li,Fenglei Huang

Polyurea (PUA) coatings have garnered significant interest as an energy-efficient construction material. However, the facile fabrication of multifunctional PUA, integrating excellent fire resistance, flame retardancy, electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption, and radar stealth capabilities, remains a formidable challenge. In this study, multifunctional biobased core–shell Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@PM and Fe3O4@PM-Fe) were fabricated using self-assembly technology. The fire safety and EMW absorption of the Fe3O4-reinforced PUA composites were investigated. Benefiting from the powerful surface tension of the modifiers, core–shell Fe3O4 can be well-dispersed in the PUA matrix. Incorporating 20.0 wt % Fe3O4@PM-Fe into PUA led to a marked decrease in peak heat release rate (67.0%), total heat release (39.5%), and total smoke production (65.9%) values. The excellent EMW absorbing performance of loading Fe3O4@PM in the PUA matrix is desirable. Unfortunately, there was slight enhancing in the reflection loss (RL) when Fe3O4 was replaced by Fe3O4@PM. Notably, Fe3O4@PM-Fe, which is formed by building a conductive network on the shell of Fe3O4@PM, was designed to further reduce the RL value. Additionally, the reduction in the radar cross-section performance was validated through Computer Simulation Technology. The radar stealth performance of the PUA composites was also explored. The PUA composite obtained excellent EMW absorption and fire resistance properties, making it a promising material for future applications.
