Light Scattering in Nanoparticle Doped Transparent Polyimide Substrates

Jiulin Shen,Fu Li,Zhonghuan Cao,David Barat,Guoli Tu

Here we demonstrate a simple and effective method of fabricating polymeric scattering substrate for flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that require no costly patterning, etching, or molding processes, aspects that are desirable for the commercialization of large-scale lighting panels. Systematic study of the influences of relative index of refraction, particle size, and doping concentration on transmittance and haze of transparent colorless polyimide (cPI) films was carried out. It was found that the reduction of transmittance and haze of the doped films decreases along with the decrease of the difference of refractive index between the particles and polymer matrix, and it could be compensated by the increase of particle size or doping concentration.

Liangyong He,Bin Yang,Sen Wang,Yuqing Yang,Yingying Wang,Haiyang Hu,Zhengzhi Zheng,Jiashuo Liu,Jiasheng Qian,Jibin Miao,Weiguo Zhang,Yuchao Ke

The increasing demand for improving the performance of optical devices and the development of nanotechnology have driven research on diffusion films. The preparation of diffusion films with well-defined microstructures can achieve uniform diffusion and scattering of light, thereby improving the efficiency and performance of optical devices. In this study, diffusion films with high transmittance and haze were prepared using PMMA@TiO2@SiO2 (P@T@S) composite microspheres, and the PMMA microspheres and nanoparticles were combined through electrostatic attraction. As compared with PMMA microspheres, the P@T@S composite microspheres displayed better heat resistance as well as swelling resistance. Optical performance data showed that the P@T@S diffusion film had the perfect optical performance with a transmittance up to 90.5% and a haze of 88.3%. The excellent light diffusion effect of the P@T@S diffusion film was experimentally demonstrated, with the light through the film not only displaying the largest area but also maintaining a relatively high brightness. Our findings can provide reference and guidance for further development of light diffusion films, which are of potential application in optoelectronic devices.

Multiscale cellulose-based optical management films with tunable transparency and haze fabricated by different bamboo components and mechanical defibrillation approaches

Yu Chen,Yuting Zhang,Juan Long,Kaimeng Xu,Tuhua Zhong

Renewable cellulose is an outstanding candidate to prepare biomass-based optical management films with tunable transparency and haze. Micro-scale and nano-scale cellulose derived from the parenchyma cells (PC) and bamboo fibers (BF) of Dendrocalamus sinicus was first separated and then subjected to succinic esterification and mechanical defibrillation using three different methods: ultrasonication, high-speed blending, and microfluidization. Sustainable multiscale optical management films with tunable haze were obtained by changing the weight ratios of micro/nanoscale cellulose. The PC-based micro/nano cellulose (MNC) films obtained by microfluidization with the highest content of nanoscale cellulose (96.5 %) displayed the highest light transmittance (89.4 %) and tensile strength (164.3 MPa) but the lowest haze (32.0 %) and anti-glare ability. The BF-based MNC films obtained by ultrasonication with the lowest content of nanoscale cellulose (20.4 %) but the highest content of microscale cellulose (79.6 %) showed the highest haze (96.7 %), a medium light transmittance (81.3 %), and the outstanding anti-glare effects. The MNC films with both high in transparency (84.8–87.5 %) and haze (81.5–88.4 %) along with good strength and flexibility can be obtained by tuning the bamboo components and mechanical defibrillation methods. This study provides a green and facile way to fabricate sustainable optical management films.

Large-scale fabrication of flexible antiglare film with superhydrophobic surface: Toward high transmittance and high haze

Yong Zhang,Qiuli Liu,Jing Li,Haichen Yao,Yihang Hou,Jiazi Hou

Optical antiglare films with high light transmittance and high haze are capable of mitigating the adverse effects of glare on eyes and offering a healthy visual experience. However, the haze increase is always accompanied with the severe loss of the light transmittance, posing a considerable challenge to simultaneously achieving high transmittance and high haze. In this work, a polyvinylbutyral (PVB) nanofibers-based polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film featuring of matched refractive indices, loosely fiber stacked density in PDMS, and appropriate fiber diameter close to the visible light wavelength, was prepared with exceptional antiglare property. Subsequently, it was further air sprayed with a hydrophobic F17@SiO 2 coating to endow the P-PVB/F17@SiO 2 composite film superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning with the water contact angle reaching 170.4°, expanding its practical applications. By employing a trimodal light regulation strategy, including Rayleigh scattering of nanoparticles, light reflection induced by micro-tunnels, and Mie scattering caused by nanofibers, the P-PVB/F17@SiO 2 film demonstrated an excellent transmittance of 90.73% and an admirable haze of 94.5%. Therefore, based on the straightforward, large-scale, cost-effective manufacturing, this work proposes a reliable way to achieve optical antiglare film with effective light regulation, which shows a great potential for applications in smart mobility, intelligent buildings, and flexible electronics, etc.

High transmittance, high haze, and UV-harvesting CNNs@CNF/PVA composite film for light management

Dai Xiaokang,Wang Longxiang,Fallatah Ahmed M.,Wang Xing,Almalki Abdulraheem S. A.,Qi Yiyu,Jin Xiaoyu,Yang Shengxiang,Yuan Bingnan

Translucent materials are widely used in indoor lighting, electronic display devices, photovoltaic devices, and other aspects of daily life. Developing materials with high transparency that can effectively manage the transmitted light spectrum is of significant practical importance. This study focuses on constructing a flexible composite film matrix using biomass nanocellulose fibrils (CNF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials. Based on the down-conversion luminescence principle, we use carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNs) as the core for light management, filtering UV rays from sunlight while converting them into visible light for light compensation. The transparency test results show that the prepared CNNs@CNF/PVA flexible composite film has a total transmittance of about 90% in the visible light range, with a haze greater than 60%. Three-dimensional fluorescence test results indicate that CNNs@CNF/PVA can convert UV light in the range of 250–375 nm into visible light in the range of 420–550 nm. Simulated outdoor lighting results show that the composite film material performs better than ordinary glass and PMMA in light transmission. This biomass-based flexible film material is expected to have broad applications in indoor lighting, flexible photovoltaic devices, and high-quality fruit and vegetable cultivation.

3D-Printed Polylactic Acid/Lignin Films with Great Mechanical Properties and Tunable Functionalities towards Superior UV-Shielding, Haze, and Antioxidant Properties

Haichuan Ye,Yuan He,Haichao Li,Tingting You,Feng Xu

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is regarded as a novel technique to realize the customized production of films. However, the relative lack of printable materials with excellent mechanical properties and tailored functionalities seriously restricts its wide application. Herein, a promising multifunctional 3D printing filament was fabricated by incorporating lignin into the polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and firstly applied to film production. The results indicate that lignin was an excellent mechanical reinforcement of the PLA matrix, especially for toughening. Only 0.5% lignin doping improved the toughness by 81.8%. Additionally, 3D-printed films with 0.5–5% lignin exhibited excellent ultraviolet (UV)-blocking capability of 87.4–99.9% for UVB and 65.6–99.8% for UVA, as well as remarkable antioxidant properties, ranging from 24.0% to 79.0%, and high levels of haze, ranging from 63.5% to 92.5%. Moreover, the prepared PLA/lignin (P/L) films based on 3D printing achieved the customization of film production and have potential applications in the fields of packaging, electronic products, medical care, and so forth. Overall, this work not only enriches the 3D printing composites with tailored multifunctionality but also brings the promising potential for the production of customized films.

Transparent and Hazy All-Cellulose Composite Films with Superior Mechanical Properties

Wen Hu,Gang Chen,Yu Liu,Yingyao Liu,Bo Li,Zhiqiang Fang

A general and scalable strategy to achieve transparent and hazy cellulose films with excellent mechanical properties, especially folding endurance, remains an obstacle. Herein, we incorporate transparent carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into opaque but hazy paper of uniformly distributed lignocellulosic fiber network by a facile and scalable impregnation to fabricate transparent and hazy all-cellulose composite films with strong mechanical properties. The CMC serves as a matrix to enhance the transparency and smoothness, whereas the isotropic intertwined network of long and slender lignocellulosic fibers simultaneously acts as a reinforcing phase to improve the mechanical properties and a light scatting source to enhance the optical haze. Consequently, the resulting composite film combines a high transparency (up to 90%) and optical haze (up to 82%) at 550 nm with superior mechanical properties (140 MPa tensile strength, 8.5 MJ m–3 toughness, and 3342 folding times). Moreover, this composite film demonstrated ultrasmoothness (Rq: 0.9 nm) and improved flame retardant performance. Mechanically robust, transparent, and hazy composite films with ultrasmoothness and enhanced fire retardancy may extend their opportunities in flexible optoelectronics.

Approaching Theoretical Haze of Highly Transparent All-Cellulose Composite Films

Gaoyuan Hou,Yu Liu,Dejian Zhang,Guanhui Li,Hong Xie,Zhiqiang Fang

A highly transparent cellulose film with a high built-in haze is emerging as a green photonic material for optoelectronics. Unfortunately, attaining its theoretical haze still remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate an all-cellulose composite film with a 90.1% transmittance and a maximal transmission haze of 95.2% close to the theoretical limit (∼100%), in which the entangled network of softwood cellulose fibers works as strong light scattering sources and regenerated cellulose (RC) with undissolved fibril bundles functions as a matrix to simultaneously improve the optical transparency and transmission haze. The underlying mechanism for the ultrahigh haze is attributed to microsized irregularities in the refractive index, arising primarily from the crystalline structure of softwood fibers, undissolved nanofibril bundles in RC, and a small number of internal cavities. Moreover, the resulting composite film presents a folding resistance of over 3500 times and good water resistance, and its application in a perovskite solar cell as an advanced light management layer is demonstrated. This work sheds light on the design of a highly transparent cellulose film with a haze approaching the theoretical limit for optoelectronics and brings us a step further toward its industrial production.

Facile way of preparing PMMA@TiO2@SiO2 (P@T@S) composite microspheres with high haze and light transmittance for diffusion film

Liangyong He,Yuqing Yang,Bin Yang,Weiqiang Hu,Zhengzhi Zheng,Tianyu Lu,Haijia He,Jiasheng Qian,Yaoyang Chen,Weiguo Zhang,Yuchao Ke

In recent years, optical diffusion film materials with high transmittance and high haze have been widely reported, while there is relatively rare research on their functionalization and practical application especially in real scenario. In this work, optical diffusion films using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)@TiO 2 @SiO 2 (P@T@S) composite microspheres were fabricated, which exhibited sufficiently high light transmittance and haze. The binding mode of PMMA microspheres and nanoparticles suggested that PMMA microspheres with a positive surface potential combined with nanoparticles with a negative surface potential through electrostatic attraction to achieve mutual binding. The prepared P@T@S composite microspheres showed better heat and swelling resistance than those of PMMA microspheres. The P@T@S diffusion film, whose excellent light diffusion effect was clearly demonstrated, exhibited the best optical performance among all optical diffusion films prepared. After passing through the P@T@S diffusion film, the laser light was not only uniform but also bright. The findings from this work can provide some insight into further research on optical diffusion films applied in optoelectronic device areas.

A partial dissolution-regeneration strategy for preparing water-resistant composite film of cellulose I and cellulose II with high light transmittance and adjustable haze

Lijiaqi Zhang,Yong Huang,Min Wu

Due to the excellent properties of nanocellulose film such as biodegradability and renewability, researchers have conducted in-depth research on it in recent years. However, rich hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose make it hydrophilic , and small gaps between the fibrils have significant capillary effect, which cause the strength of nanocellulose film drastically deteriorates when exposed to water, severely restricting its scope of use. In this study, the nanocellulose prepared by ball milling was used to prepare nanocellulose film, and the surface of the film was partially dissolved by ZnCl 2 . The dense regenerated cellulose (Cellulose Ⅱ) with Zn 2+ on the surface made the film hydrophobic, effectively reduced the water absorption rate of the film, and also maintained the internal structure of the nanocellulose. Through this strategy, the nanocellulose film with high dry strength (151–176 MPa), wet strength (27.6–31.7 MPa), high light transmittance (80–91%), and adjustable haze (50–90%) was obtained. This study provides a facile and environmentally friendly strategy to improve the wet strength of nanocellulose film, which broadens its application prospect in packaging materials and electronic devices.

Lignin Nanoparticles: Promising Sustainable Building Blocks of Photoluminescent and Haze Films for Improving Efficiency of Solar Cells

Xue Wang,Huanxin Guo,Zonghao Lu,Xue Liu,Xiongfei Luo,Shujun Li,Shouxin Liu,Jian Li,Yongzhen Wu,Zhijun Chen

Films with the capacity for photoluminescence and haze, which can convert UV to visible light and enhance light management, are of great importance for optoelectronic devices. Here, taking advantage of the inherent fluorescence and self-assembly properties of lignin, we have developed a sustainable lignin-derived multifunctional dopant (L-MS-NPs) for fabricating optical films with haze, fluorescence, and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) together with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The optical films are used to improve the light-harvesting efficiency of solar cells. Specifically, attributed to the robust morphology in the film matrix, L-MS-NPs cause a rough morphology in the surface of an L-MS-NPs/PVA composite film, which eventually triggers the great optical haze. Additionally, L-MS-NPs inherit fluorescence properties from lignin and show fluorescence emission when embed in the film matrix. Moreover, the PVA film matrix can stabilize the excited triplet state, which finally induces RTP of L-MS-NPs. The combined haze, fluorescence, and RTP properties of the L-MS-NPs/PVA composite film enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells from ∼3.9 to ∼4.1%.
