Synergistically Utilizing a Liquid Bridge and Interconnected Porous Superhydrophilic Structures to Achieve a One-Step Fog Collection Mode

Mingshuo Chen,Wei Sun,Hongtao Liu,Qiang Luo,Yining Wang,Jinmu Huan,Yongping Hou,Yongmei Zheng

Conventional fog collection efficiency is subject to the inherent inefficiencies of its three constituent steps: fog capture, coalescence, and transportation. This study presents a liquid bridge synergistic fog collection system (LSFCS) by synergistically utilizing a liquid bridge and interconnected porous superhydrophilic structures (IPHS). The results indicate that the introduction of liquid bridge not only greatly accelerates water droplet transportation, but also facilitates the IPHS in maintaining rough structures that realize stable and efficient fog capture. During fog collection, the lower section of the IPHS is covered by a water layer, however due to the effect of the liquid bridge, the upper section protrudes out, while covered by a connective thin water film that does not obscure the microstructures of the upper section. Under these conditions, a one-step fog collection mode is realized. Once captured by the IPHS, fog droplets immediately coalesce with the water film, and are simultaneously transported into a container under the effect of the liquid bridge. The LSFCS achieves a collection efficiency of 6.5 kg m −2 h −1 , 2.3 times that of a system without a liquid bridge. This study offers insight on improving fog collection efficiency, and holds promise for condensation water collection or droplet manipulation.

Sandwiched Copper Foam with Symmetrical Wettability for Direction-Independent Fog Collection

Jinyue Xiao,Xin Zhang,Zhecun Wang

The Janus membrane demonstrates its advantages in timely drainage and directional water transport properties for efficient fog water collection, which helps alleviate global water shortages. However, the direction-dependent collection and inefficient directional water transport properties limit its widespread application. Herein, a single-layered sandwich-structured copper foam that features a superhydrophilic inner layer and double-deck external hydrophobic layers is prepared by a simple method. This innovative architecture demonstrates direction-independent fog harvesting capabilities through the synergistic integration of symmetric wettability gradients and robust structural integrity. Such sandwiched copper foam shows its superiority in rapid directional water transport and timely drainage properties which can quickly regenerate the fresh outer hydrophobic surface as well as the direction-independent unidirectional water transport properties. The rapid directional water transport property combined with the timely drainage of the sandwiched copper foam benefits the continuous better performance of fog collection compared to that of conventional Janus membranes. Clearly, the development of such sandwiched copper foam with a direction-independent unidirectional water transport property enables the effective and durable collection of fog droplets in environments with dynamically changeable winds. Overall, this work provides a new idea for the fabrication of advanced materials for direction-independent fog collection.

An Efficient Fog Collection Origami Janus Membrane for Rapid Directional Water Transport and Omnidirectional Fog Harvesting

Qiong Wang,Yihang Zhang,Guangyi Tian,Zhiguang Guo

Existing Janus fog harvesting technologies struggle to achieve efficient and continuous fog collection across various fog flow directions. In this work, we developed a Janus fog harvesting (JHL) system, characterized by a boundary-free Janus system formed by selective modification with octadecanethiol, creating a pair of hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. The system features a 3D origami macrostructure composed of scallop arrays and shaped like an improved trumpet flower. The wettability gradient Janus system enables rapid droplet capture and ultrafast absorption. The multiple parallel and dual-asymmetric 3D Kirigami superhydrophilic channels facilitate high-speed, directional, and long-range liquid transport. These mechanisms work seamlessly together to keep both the superhydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces dry at all times. As a result, our JHL achieves a fog harvesting efficiency as high as 0.83 g·cm–2·min–1, which is 3 times that of the original sample. Moreover, our improved trumpet-shaped 3D structure extends the Janus design concept from traditional membrane materials to spatial membrane configurations, making it suitable for omnidirectional fog harvesting in any fog flow environment.

Fabrication of biomimetic laser etched superwetting copper surfaces for highly improved mist collection efficiency

Yitong Pang,Guoying Mei,Fengyi Wang,Ao Fu,Zhiguang Guo

Water scarcity has become a serious global issue due to frequent global climate extremes such as warming, storms, floods and droughts. Developing highly efficient water-harvesting materials to collect freshwater from mist is a potential solution to solving the issue. Herein, a series of superwetting copper materials with excellent mist collecting efficiencies were successfully prepared via facile etching, modification, laser-scanning and plating methods. The sample surfaces showed unique wettability and structure characteristics that numbers of hydrophilic humps were regularly arrayed and embed into the superhydrophobic surface with nanorod structures. The surface structure, chemical composition of the superwetting copper materials were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. Excellent mist collection efficiency of the fabricated superwetting copper materials was verified by mist collection tests. In addition, the enhancing mechanism of mist collecting behavior on the superwetting copper surface was analyzed. The excellent mist collecting performance of the prepared surfaces exhibited promising potential to achieve mist collecting materials.

High-efficient and robust fog collection through topography modulation

Shuyi Zhu,Yanhua Liu,Tianbin Bai,Xueting Shi,Dianming Li,Libang Feng

Janus wettable material is considered one of the most promising candidates for fog collection. However, the applications of fog collectors are confined by many weaknesses nowadays, such as tedious fabrication methods, low mechanical stability and durability, and poor collecting efficiency. Among them, improving fog harvesting efficiency is a big challenge to be overcome. Herein, a series of hydrophobic-superhydrophilic Janus system has been successfully fabricated by a facile and eco-friendly method including etching and interface modification. Importantly, under the inspiration of natural creatures, the topography of hydrophobic surface in Janus system can be modulated by modifying substances with different low surface energy, effectively improving the fog collecting performance, and obtaining an excellent fog harvesting efficiency of 3718 mg·cm −2 ·h −1 in unenclosed fog environment. The underlying mechanism is designed to discuss the enhancement of fog collection in terms of fog capture, drop coalescence and drop transportation. Meanwhile, it is recyclable and durable even maintained for at least 5 months. Moreover, it exhibits good stability during mechanical, thermal and ultraviolet (UV) resistance testing. Overall, the findings open up a new avenue to design Janus materials for efficient fog harvesting by regulating micromorphology and promote a promising candidate for addressing water scarcity.

High-effective fog collection on metal surfaces by temperature gradients

Ye Fu,Liubin Li,Shulun Ai,Zhiguang Guo,Weimin Liu

The acquisition of global freshwater resources has always been the direction of people's efforts. At present, metal materials based on special wettability and special structure have become an effective way to collect fog. However, it is still a bottleneck to further improve the water collection efficiency by carefully designing the wettability and special structure of materials. Therefore, we propose to use temperature gradient to enhance fog collection in metal surface. The mechanism of temperature gradient enhancement improves fog collection efficiency by 54 % and surface refresh rate by about 541 %. Further scattering measurements show that the capture time of fog particles at low cooling surface is shortened by about 40 %. Based on the theory of heat transfer and thermophoresis , the temperature gradient around the metal and the behavior of fog particles are analyzed, and it is concluded that the enhancement of fog collection performance on the metal surface can be caused by the temperature gradient caused by thermophoresis force. This work provides ideas for designing better fog collection equipment and materials.

Beetle-Inspired Dual-Directional Janus Pumps with Interfacial Asymmetric Wettability for Enhancing Fog Harvesting

Junda Wu,Zhuo Yan,Yongsheng Yan,Chunxiang Li,Jiangdong Dai

Fog-harvesting devices (FHDs) have been widely explored and applied to alleviate the shortage of fresh water. However, during the fog collection process, how to maintain a balance between fog capture and water removal behaviors to enhance the water collection rate still remains a challenge. Herein, inspired by the Stenocara beetle, we combined a beetle-like Janus surface and the conventional cross-sectional Janus structure together, developed a simple spray-and-dry strategy to obtain three types of biomimetic asymmetric meshes, and explored the working modes for atmospheric fog collection. The surface wettability could be carefully controlled, and various asymmetric meshes with different water transportation behaviors were obtained. Through a detailed study of the fog collection process, we concluded that there existed three main working modes: Janus mode, hybrid mode, and Janus and hybrid mode. It was noted that the dual-directional Janus pump with the Janus and hybrid working mode balanced the fog capture and water removal ability and exhibited the highest water collection rate of 2478.73 mg m–2 h–1, which was 2.61 times more than that of the corresponding superhydrophilic mesh. Furthermore, the prepared dual-directional Janus pump showed superior mechanical durability and antibacterial ability. In general, this work was considered instrumental in the reasonable design of biomimetic asymmetric meshes and could provide references for efficient atmospheric fog harvesting.

Bioinspired 1D Anisotropic Double-Spiral Metal Wires for Efficient Fog Harvesting

Shuangmin Fu,Jing Zhao,Yongshen Zhou,Ke Pei,Zhiguang Guo

Innovative design strategies of fog harvesting devices (FHDs) demonstrate promising remedy for water crisis in arid areas. 1D FHDs ensure unimpeded wind circulation and can be manufactured more cost-effectively for extensive regions. Inspired by cactus thorns, desert beetles, and spider silk, two metal organic frameworks (MOFs) functionalized Cu wires with opposite wettability are double-twisted by a mechanical twisting machine, forming 1D double-spiral Cu wires with alternating superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic dual-MOF patterns. The biomimic integration design, namely conical microneedle, stripe-patterned contrasting wettability, and double-spiral geometry, allows for efficient fog water collection due to a collaborative process. Based on such multi-cooperation theory, the optimal fog collection efficiency of dual-MOF functionalized double-spiral Cu wires can reach 0.293 ± 0.013 g cm −2 min −1 by investigating the effect of the composition, the diameter ratio and twisting wavelength λ of the two constituent wires. The double-spiral metal wires with discrepant wettability not only propose a facile and cost-effective method for fog harvesting, but also share new physical insight to inspire novel design concepts for efficient fog collection devices, benefitting the fight against the global water crisis.

Self-pumping and scalable fog collector with diode-like micro-hole arrays inspired by natural asymmetric wettability

Maolin Zhou,Xuyao He,Xingyu Wu,Lin Xiao,Zehang Cui,Xiaoxuan Tang,Long Guo,Senyun Liu,Hongwei Liu,Yuying Zhu,Yabin Zhang,Guoqiang Li,Jiangong Zhu

Fog collection has been considered as an effective and sustainable approach for relieving the water deficiency in arid regions. Despite great progresses on bioinspired superwetting surfaces towards fog collection, practical fog-collecting devices face challenges by omnidirectional collection and lower-evaporation storage simultaneously. Inspired by unidirectional liquid movement caused by asymmetric wettability on the holey lotus leaf, a self-revolving collector was developed to efficiently harvest the fog in a wind-driven manner, finally storing it lastingly at lower-evaporation rate. Such a collector provided a superhydrophobic external surface for capturing fogdrops, a diode-liquid micro-hole array for the spontaneous droplet movement, and a hydrophilic internal surface for fast droplet collection and long-term storage. The synergy of these structural features together with composition merits made the self-revolving collector show efficient fog collection and lower-evaporation storage. The fog-laden wind field around the collector as well as the relationship between the self-revolving speed and the fog-laden wind speed were explored theoretically. The corresponding model analyses further supported the 49% enhancement of fog collection rate when the collector whipped by 1 m/s fog-laden wind revolves at 18 rad/s. This work opens an avenue for designing a novel fog collector used in real environment and offers a strategy for optimizing the existing fog collectors towards high efficiency.

Solid-like Slippery Surface with Excellent Comprehensive Performance

Shuwei Lv,Xiaodong Yang,Qiao Liu,Chunyu Mao,Xianli Liu,Ying Zhai,Zhuojuan Yang

Slippery surfaces with outstanding slippery performances have shown application prospects in various fields, including anti-icing, antifouling, droplet transportation, and fog collection. However, practical application of the existing slippery surfaces is limited by lubricating oil loss, low water-slippery ability, low surface robustness, complex processes, and high costs. To overcome these limitations, we propose a facile, low-cost method to create a solid-like slippery Al surface (SSS-Al) by mixing hydrophobic nano-ceramic coating, silicone oil, and nano-SiO2, which shows excellent comprehensive performance. The SSS-Al shows exceptional water-slippery ability with a sliding angle of 5° and antifouling ability. Durability and chemical stability tests confirm the high surface durability and chemical stability of SSS-Al. Furthermore, SSS-Al exhibits anti-icing performance, fog collection ability, and electrochemical corrosion resistance, as well as demonstrates remarkable application prospects in important fields such as aerospace and shipbuilding.

Facile fabrication of multiple biomimetic patterned superwetting zinc surfaces with enhanced collecting efficiency from water mist

Yitong Pang,Fengyi Wang,Guoying Mei,Ao Fu,Ke Pei

Water shortage has emerged as a significant worldwide issue as a result of the frequency of extreme weather events like storms, droughts and climate warming. One possible way to address the world's freshwater deficit is to effectively extract freshwater from water mist. In this work, a series of biomimetic superhydrophobic-hydrophilic patterned zinc materials for mist collection was designed via mold pressing, anodic oxidation and laser-scanning methods. The fog collector is able to capture droplets efficiently and transport water quickly due to its unique array structure. The patterned superhydrophobic-hydrophilic zinc surface contained the highest water mist collection efficiency of about 10.89 g·m −2 ·s −1 , which is 75 % higher than the original zinc sheet. The surface structure, chemical composition of the superwetting zinc materials were investigated by FT-IR, XPS, FESEM and EDS, respectively. In addition, the mechanical robustness, weather ability and enhancing mechanism of the prepared superwetting zinc surfaces were investigated via UV exposure, multiple thermal/cold cycles and sandpaper abrasion treatment. The good collecting efficiency from water mist of the obtained functional surfaces may provide ideas for the future design of mist collection materials.

Bioinspired construction of petal-like regenerated PVDF/cellulose fibers for efficient fog harvesting

Kang Yang,Chao Duan,Zixuan Meng,Yuanmei Liu,Yueyin Liu,Zengyin Xie,Yonghao Ni

Water collection from atmospheric fog was deemed to be an efficient and sustainable strategy to defuse the freshwater scarcity crisis. Fog harvesting and trapping fibers, therefore, has aroused extensive interest due to their ease of preparation, weave, and use. However, the traditional fibers used in fog collector usually have a low fog collection capacity and efficiency because of their unreasonable morphology and structure design. Herein, we proposed a simple process to construct advanced fibers using a one-step wet spinning of hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and hydrophilic cellulose mixture fiber for fog harvesting. The as-prepared fibers featured a petaloid structure and surface hydrophobic gradient, thus facilitating fog deposition, water droplet formation, and drainage. The unique longitudinal groove structure above enabled the hybrid fiber to achieve an excellent fog collection efficiency of 2750.26 mg/cm 2 /h per monofilament , which outstripped most of other fiber materials. When woven these fibers were in a longitudinal array network with an interval of 1 mm, and the fog collection efficiency can maintain at 10.30 L/m 2 /h. Therefore, this work provided a new strategy for further exploration of effective fog collection by cellulose-based fiber materials.
