Sodium bicarbonate blasting was applied to remove the corrosion layer of ancient bronze artifacts. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was employed to investigate the surface morphology, and element composition of the bronze coin surface
before and after blasting. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the mineralogical composition of products in the corrosion layer of the bronze coin. The products are cerussite (PbCO3), lead oxide (PbO2), cassiterite (SnO2), bobkingite Cu2Cl2(OH)8(H2O)12
and malachite Cu2(CO3)(OH)2 which can be effectively removed by employing an impinge angle of 90°, working pressure at 0.3 MPa. These results indicate that sodium bicarbonate blasting can achieve non-destructive removal of the corrosion layer on the bronze
coin. This work will be helpful for better restoration and preservation of the bronze cultural relics.

Limited research exists on the temporary protection of unearthed bronzes during transportation to museum environments. An eco-friendly protective coating for bronzes featuring corrosion inhibition, reinforcement, and nondestructive peeling was developed. The HV-PA+ L -Arg composite microgel was prepared by mixing polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol diacrylate microgel (PA) with l -arginine-containing pre-crosslinking solution (HV) followed by centrifugation. Results from colorimetric analysis showed that the composite microgel did not alter the appearance of bronzes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed a corrosion inhibition efficiency of up to 95.72 %. The corrosion inhibition mechanism was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory, and molecular dynamics simulation. Compression and tensile tests quantified the reinforcement of HV-PA-based composite microgels before and after cross-linking, demonstrating that compressive strength increased by approximately 2.70-fold and tensile strength by 2.27-fold. Reinforcement mechanisms were analyzed using rheological tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The nondestructive stripping performance of the HV-PA+ L -Arg composite microgel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman. Nondestructive stripping, achievable via ethanol spraying and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, offers dual options for flexible removal of the protective coating, ensuring subsequent restoration or reprocessing of bronze relics.

Bronze relics with vital historical, artistic, and scientific value, are one of the significant symbolizations of human civilization. However, due to the long burial time and the change in storage conditions, an inevitable and thorny problem arises in preventing the ancient bronze relics from corrosion. Coatings have great potential for metal corrosion protection at present. This study prepared a multifunctional coating consisting of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), and fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) polymer by an organic-inorganic hybrid, which was applied onto the surface of corroded bronze using a self-assembly method and spraying. The rough structure of composite coating resembling that of the mastoid structure found on lotus leaf, effectively prolongs the transmission path of corrosive ions while preventing bronze contact with the corrosive media. Additionally, this study mainly investigated the bronze anti-corrosion mechanism through an electrochemical analysis perspective. Electrochemical tests revealed the lower corrosion current density, and the positive corrosion potential of multifunctional FEVE@ZnO/TiO 2 coating immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The experimental results demonstrate that the synergistic effect of organic-inorganic significantly enhances corrosion resistance by retarding the corrosion process and providing active protection against corrosion. The multifunctional coating also exhibits exceptional self-cleaning properties and weatherability when without changing the bronze color and appearance. Consequently, this preparation strategy and research approach for constructing a multifunction coating has a great application prospect in the conservation of bronze relics and metal anti-corrosion.

Bronze has been used for various applications since ancient times, and therefore, its preservation is critical. However, preserving bronze is challenging. The traditional inhibitor sealing method is limited by its toxicity and sealing effects. In this study, a benzotriazole (BTA) inhibitor loaded with a composite hydrogel of sodium alginate and cyclic-peptide-grafted β-cyclodextrin was prepared. The chemical structure of the components of the composite hydrogel coating was characterized through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The microstructure of the coating on bronzeware was characterized through scanning electronic microscopy. The thermal analysis of the composite hydrogel coating confirmed that BTA was introduced successfully into the composite hydrogel, and the coating exhibited the liquid crystalline property because of the mesogenic unit—cyclic peptide. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the modified β-cyclodextrin-loaded benzotriazole considerably improved the corrosion resistance. In a certain range, the higher was the BTA-loaded Cyc-g-β-CD ratio, the stronger was the protective effect of the gel coating. In conclusion, corrosion inhibitors can considerably improve the corrosion resistance of gel coatings.

A convenient and reliable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate has been developed for the surface corrosion analysis of bronze artifacts. The substrate consists of oriented alginate nanofiber membranes containing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which were obtained through electrostatic spinning, ion exchange, and in-situ reduction. By controlling the reduction time, Ag/alginate nanofiber membranes with different contents, sizes, and distributions were obtained. The Ag/alginate nanofiber#20 membranes, obtained with a reduction time of 20 min, reached a detection limit of 10 −12 M for R6G with an enhancement factor of 6.64 × 10 7 . In the trace detection of bronze patina, the intensity of the characteristic peaks of harmful patina located at 513, 846, 911, and 974 cm −1 were increased by more than 500 %. This was due to the uniform loading of a large number of Ag NPs on the surface of the nanofiber membrane obtained by reduction for 20 min, and the formation of a large number of hot spots between the oriented nanofibers. This significantly improved the SERS performance of the flexible substrate layer under the joint action with the Ag NPs. These results indicate that the flexible substrate layer can greatly enhance the Raman characteristic peaks of alkali copper chloride and be effectively used for trace analysis of the surface composition of bronze artifacts.
