Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have been brought into the spotlight as next-generation electrolytes for batteries in the realm of flexible and wearable electronic devices. However, challenges remain in achieving a trade-off between high safety, high ionic conductivity, and superior mechanical stretchability concurrently. To conquer it, the ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide; EMIM-TFSI), coupled with the organic fluorinated solvent ( N , N -dimethyl trifluoroacetamide; FDMAC), is proposed for designing a neotype organic-ionogel (OIG) with a rigid-flexible vinylene carbonate (VEC)-butyl acrylate (BA) cross-linked copolymer as the polymer skeleton. By structural optimization and component regulation, the optimal OIG-15 % presents the enhanced ionic conductivity (5.5 × 10 −4 S cm −1 ), non-flammability, and prominent mechanical stretchability, especially sustaining an elongation at break of 427 % and volumetric compressibility exceeding 85 %. Consequently, the Li||Li symmetric cell assembled with OIG-15 % can demonstrate stable cycling for over 2000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 , while the Li|OIG-15 %|LiFePO₄ cell can still maintain an exceptional capacity retention of nearly 100 % after 450 cycles at 0.5C. This work provides a valuable construction strategy for the development of high-quality gel electrolyte materials, paving the way for breakthroughs in the widespread application for solid-state polymer lithium metal batteries.

Developing high-safety electrolytes is very important to improve the safety and operative temperature of lithium batteries. In this study, a heat-resistant and non-flammable electrolyte is constructed by introducing a functionalized ionic liquid N-methyl-N-methoxyethyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (Pyr 12O1 FSI, IL1) into porous polyurethane (PU) matrix. IL1 contains ether functional group, which can increase the chain flexibility of IL and provide more ion migration channels. Moreover, IL1 shows high compatibility with PU matrix because the intermolecular hydrogen bond is formed by N H groups of PU and ether oxygen of IL1, which is evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The binding energy further corroborates the enhanced intermolecular interaction between IL1 and PU. Owing to the superior characteristics of IL1 and synergetic coupling with PU, PU-IL1 electrolyte exhibits good electrochemical performance and endows LiFePO 4 /Li (LFP/Li) battery with a high specific capacity of 135 mA h g −1 and 99% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.2C, 30 °C. In addition, the LFP/Li battery with PU-IL1 electrolyte exhibits a high capacity of 134 mA h g −1 (0.5C) and it remains 98% after 100 cycles at a high temperature of 80 °C.

Boosting the energy density and safety issue of lithium-ion batteries has become ever more important to satisfy the diverse applications such as energy storage and mobile electronic devices. Herein, we present a new high voltage polyether-based electrolyte (HVPEE) by solvation structure design that can endure high-voltage operations and also possess non-flammable features. Especially, HVPEEs show better compatibility and stability with electrode than conventional electrolyte. We find that the solvent separated ion pair (SSIP) and contact ion pair (CIP) dominate the ion–solvent structure of HVPEEs, rather than the free solvent and ions. In this way, the oxidative decomposition of HVPEE on the cathode interface can be suppressed significantly due to the reduced highest occupied molecular orbital of SSIP complex structure than that of free TFSI - . As a result, the oxidation voltage can achieve as high as 5.35 V when the ether group/Li is optimized at 10/1 in the HVPEE, enabling the LiFePO 4 //Li full cells deliver a capacity of 165 mA h g −1 with a capacity retention of 98 % after 200 cycles. Moreover, when the cut-off voltage is 4.5 V, the discharge capacity of the LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 //Li full cell can reach 170 mA h g −1 .

High-performance polymer electrolytes with the capability to self-heal mechanical damage can effectively enhance reliability, safety and service life of the batteries. Herein, a novel polymer electrolyte (PBPE) with excellent self-healing capacity and high ionic conductivity was developed. PBPE with polymer networks cross-linked by highly reversible imine bonds was fabricated by the Schiff-base reaction between poly(ethylene glycol) diamine and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde. PBPE can quickly repair the cut damage spontaneously within 1 h at room temperature and recover its mechanical strength and electrochemical properties. The healed PBPE exhibits almost the same ionic conductivities and mechanical properties as the original PBPE shows. PBPE possesses the highest ionic conductivity (4.79 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 30 °C) among the self-healing polymer electrolytes. PBPE can promote the generation of LiF-rich SEI and effectively suppress dendrite growth on Li metal anodes. LiFePO 4 (LFP) cells assembled with PBPE exhibit excellent rate capability (discharge capacity of 118.2 mAh g −1 at 5 C rate) and good cycling performance (capacity retention of 97.8% over 125 cycles). More importantly, the healed PBPE can completely recover its properties from damage in LFP cells and enable the cells to possess cycle performance identical to original PBPE.

Developing safe and high-voltage solid-state polymer electrolytes for high-specific-energy lithium metal batteries holds great promise. However, low ionic conductivity, limited Li + transference number, narrow voltage window, and high flammability greatly hinder their practical applications. Herein, we propose a puzzle-like molecular assembly strategy to construct a solid-state polymer electrolyte via in situ polymerization. The triallyl phosphate and 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl methacrylate segments are spliced into the vinyl ethylene carbonate matrix to enhance anion affinity and promote lithium salt dissociation, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 0.432 mS cm -1 and a Li + transference number of 0.70 at 25 °C. Meanwhile, the polymer electrolyte exhibits a high oxidation voltage of 5.15 V, enabled by its intrinsic high-voltage tolerance and the formation of a robust inorganic-rich interphase. As a result, the Li||LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cell maintains stable performance for 300 cycles and reliably cycles even with an application-oriented mass loading of 15.8 mg cm -2 . The 2.6-Ah Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 pouch cell reaches a high specific energy of 349 Wh kg -1 . Furthermore, the developed polymer electrolyte displays superior nonflammability and the Li||LiFePO 4 cell exhibits stable cycling for over 120 cycles at 100 °C. Both accelerating rate calorimetry and nail penetration tests verify the high safety of the pouch cells using the designed polymer electrolyte, showing the potential for practical applications.
