The effect of annealing temperature of Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 amorphous ribbons for activation of persulfate on azo dye Orange G degradation was investigated. The ribbons annealed below 623 K have very rapid degradation rate, and the degradation efficiency within 10 min was 97%. The kinetic analysis elucidated that the degradation process could be described by pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The reaction rate was not strictly decreased with the increasing annealing temperature. In particular, the ribbons with different structures by annealing at different temperatures, after the reaction, show obviously discrepant surface corrosion morphology which also plays a role in the reaction rate. Tungsten disilicide (WSi 2 ) is a promising material for high-temperature applications due to its excellent mechanical properties and superior thermal stability. This study aims to investigate the mechanisms underlying the performance enhancement of polycrystalline WSi 2 and tungsten silicide (W-Si) composites synthesized by high-temperature and high-pressure (HPHT) strategies, focusing on their phase composition and microstructure. The results show that high pressure can effectively reduce the synthesis temperature of the tungsten silicide system, with the phase composition and microstructure of the products being dominated by the treatment temperature. The high intergranular strain resulting from the reactive process and the HPHT environment facilitated the formation of high-density dislocations, including dislocation arrays and networks with multiple orientations, especially near the grain boundaries. Additionally, a 3-nm thick amorphous ribbons were identified between these boundaries. This microstructure, characterized by high-density dislocations and amorphous ribbons, confers exceptional mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. The differences in oxidation behavior between powder and bulk WSi 2 samples underscore the complex relationship between phase stability and material properties under varying processing conditions. These findings indicate that dislocations and amorphous ribbons can achieve in high-temperature ceramics with strong covalent bonding, which is essential for the design and synthesis of advanced W-Si-based ceramics.
Water disinfection would result in unintended formation of halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) which pose potential harm to human health. In present work, Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 amorphous ribbons (Fe-Si-B AR ) showed excellent catalytic degradation performance towards an aromatic DBP, 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid (3,5-DiClSA) by Fenton-like reaction. The catalytic degradation performances of Fe-Si-B AR , Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 crystalline ribbons (Fe-Si-B CR ) and iron powders towards 3,5-DiClSA were compared, and Fe-Si-B AR (0.0166 min −1 ) showed the fastest degradation rate. The faster surface mobility of Fe-Si-B AR , which made it easy for Fe 2+ to be oxidized by H 2 O 2 , facilitated the degradation process. High-valent iron of Fe IV could be generated which accounted for degradation of 3,5-DiClSA. The Fe-Si-B AR also showed better and better catalytic performance in 10 reuse cycles. Besides, the cytotoxicity tests indicated that the overall toxicity level of 3,5-DiClSA was declined by 88.1 % after degradation by Fe-Si-B AR . Our results showed that Fe-Si-B AR is a promising catalyst for the degradation of aromatic DBPs.
