Catalytic oxidation of toluene-acetone mixture over MnOx/Cu foam monolithic catalyst: Strong Cu-Mn interaction and amorphous phase

Ying Huang,Juan Lei,Baobao Bai,Xiaoli Ren,Lijun Cheng,Yu Cao,Shuang Wang,Jinping Li

Traditional powder catalysts are not suitable for industrial applications due to low utilization of active phase and easy sintering. Therefore, monolithic catalyst MCCF with good stability and water-resistance was designed for the catalytic oxidation of toluene-acetone mixture, in which amorphous MnO x derived via pyrolysis of Mn-MOFs loaded on copper foam (CF) and different transition layers were employed between MnO x and CF to regulate Cu-Mn interaction. The combined action of amorphous MnO x and the Cu-Mn strong interaction enhanced the catalytic degradation of toluene-acetone mixture. The existence of amorphous MnO x and the impacts of Cu-Mn interaction on weakening Mn-O bonds and stimulating reactive oxygen species were verified by various characterizations. Furthermore, the reaction pathways of toluene and acetone on catalyst MCCF were revealed as well as their interactions within the mixture.

Ultrafine Amorphous MnOx Nanoparticles for a High Mass Loading Electrode

Shijin Zhu,Minghao Sun,Jingyi Jiang,Xiafan Zhan,Changyu Du,Cheng Ding,Dehua Wei,Xuechen Huang

High electrochemically active manganese dioxide (MnO2) has been deemed to be a promising active material for a high mass loading electrode. Here, an amorphous MnOx nanostructure constituted by ultrafine MnOx nanoparticles was fabricated by a simple, controllable, and cost-effective strategy. The electrochemical properties of the as-prepared MnOx nanostructures were significantly improved due to their amorphous crystalline structure. For a high mass loading electrode, an optimized content of amorphous MnOx, carbon black, and carbon nanotubes was measured to be 79.1%, 13.5%, and 7.4%, respectively. A high mass loading electrode of 13.5 mg·cm–2 was fabricated with a capacitance of 371.3 F·g–1 calculated based on the weight of pure amorphous MnOx. Hence, a high mass loading asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by amorphous MnOx (12.6 mg·cm–2) and activated porous carbon (APC, 22.4 mg·cm–2) delivers an ultrahigh areal energy density of 780.3 μW h·cm–2. Furthermore, a good cycling stability with 98% of the initial capacitance retention was achieved after 8000 cycles, meeting the requirements of a commercial energy storage device.

Micelle-mediated assembly of metals in Ag@MnOx/m-SiO2 for reinforced antimicrobial activity and photothermal water evaporation

Wenlong Tu,Haodong Li,Bo Li,Jie Cheng,Ping Xu,Wuxiang Zhang,Zengjing Guo,Jing Zhao,Fanghua Li,Yiyan Song,Fu Yang

The increasing complexity of environmental pollution posed a higher requirement for the development of environment-governed functional materials . Herein, to achieve desired synergy and multiple functionalities of eco-friendly nanomaterials , a micelle-mediated metal assembly strategy was proposed to integrate plasmonic Ag nanoparticles into MnO x modified mesoporous silica hosts by metal-modified neutral dodecyl amine surfactant , correspondingly, a multifunctional mesoporous Ag@MnOx/m-SiO 2 (AMSs) nanocomposite was obtained. The characterization results revealed that the introduction of Mn and alteration in the amount of Ag mediated the formation of a special mesostructure and nanometric morphology of the silica host. Bearing a low Ag loading (r.t. of Ag/Mn = 1/2), ultrafine Ag nanoparticles were embedded in the inner core of mesoporous silica nanospheres . While assembly with a higher Ag concentration affected the morphology of the obtained AMSs and resulted in rich Ag nanoparticles on the exterior surface of mesoporous silica. By this strategy, ultrafine Ag nanoparticles and well-dispersed amorphous MnO x species were coupled into the mesoporous silica to reach a special configuration and integrated functionality. The obtained AMSs-3 can effectively inactivate bacteria ( E. coli , S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa ) with a prolonged inhibitory effect, rapidly reduce harmful nitrophenol, as well as photothermally assist water evaporation (evaporation rate of 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , receiver efficiency of 87%). This work provides versatile environment-governing functional nanomaterials for both highly effective antimicrobial and environmental remediation.

TiC supported amorphous MnOx as highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for corrosion resistant oxygen electrode of Zn-air batteries

Shidong Song,Wanjun Li,Ya-Ping Deng,Yanli Ruan,Yining Zhang,Xuhui Qin,Zhongwei Chen

Zn-air batteries (ZABs) represent promising candidates for the next generation energy conversion and storage systems based on their superior features to those of lithium-ion batteries, including high theoretical energy density , low cost, and high safety. However, their further development and application is severely lagged due to the lack of high efficient and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts . The widely applied carbon-based catalysts are thermodynamically instable during battery charging. Herein, TiC supported amorphous MnO x (a-MnO x /TiC) is reported for the first time as electrocatalyst for the corrosion resistant oxygen electrodes of ZABs. A-MnO x /TiC delivers a remarkable activity and stability toward both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a high half-wave potential (0.8 V) for ORR and a low potential (1.56 V) at 10 mA cm −2 for OER, which far outperforms the state of the art ORR catalyst (Pt/C) and OER catalyst (IrO 2 ), as well as the Pt/C-IrO 2 and a-MnO x /C bifunctional catalysts . The excellent bifunctional activity of a-MnO x /TiC can be attributed to the efficient synergistic effect between the active amorphous MnO x catalyst and the highly conductive and stable TiC support. More impressively, a-MnO x /TiC demonstrates an outstanding electrochemical stability in strong alkaline electrolyte under OER condition in contrast to the readily oxidized carbon-based a-MnO x /C catalysts. ZAB with a-MnO x /TiC delivers a greater discharge performance with a peak power density of 217.1 mW cm −2 than that of Pt/C-based ZAB, and a surpassing discharge and charge cycling performance and stability to ZABs with Pt/C-IrO 2 and a-MnO x /C. Furthermore, a-MnO x /TiC can be applied for solid-state ZABs which exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility and cycle stability under their flat and bent states. The a-MnO x /TiC bifunctional electrocatalyst with extraordinarily high activity and electrochemical stability provides a promising approach for exploring corrosion resistant electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries with high efficiency and long-term cycling stability.
