Action mechanism of nano titanium carbide (nTiC), nano zirconium carbide (nZrC), and nano silicon carbide (nSiC) was studied using a concentrated ignition experimental system, an X-ray diffractometer and a scanning electron microscope. Each nano-carbide was mixed with B in mass ratio of 2/8 and then pressed into tablets, respectively. Furthermore, a sample of amorphous B was also prepared as the control group. All the three nano-carbides showed positive influence on the ignition of B. During the first stage of combustion, only nTiC could increase the maximum emission spectral intensity of the sample, while both nTiC and nZrC helped to increase that during the second stage of combustion. Although the addition of nano-carbides intensified the energy release rate of B (except nSiC), the expansion and diffusion of generated carbon dioxide took large amounts of heat away and reduced the surface temperature of the samples The temperature change in solid-phase exhibited a relationship with the spectral intensity change in gas-phase. The temperature increase was slow during the ignition delay stage, while the first combustion stage proceeded with rapid increase in surface temperature. The high-temperature areas regressed during the second combustion stage, accompanied by the gradual stopping of gas-phase reactions. The components and microstructure of the condensed combustion products (CCPs) were analyzed after the ignition experiment. Results showed that both nTiC and nZrC could react with B to generate corresponding metal borides, capable of promoting the ignition of B. Moreover, the catalysis of produced TiO 2 and ZrO 2 explain the increase of emission spectral intensity during the second combustion stage. A lot of micropores formed in the CCPs after adding nTiC, which showed a destructive effect of generated gaseous CO 2 on the surface oxide layer. In general, nTiC is the top accelerant for B oxidation in this study, while nSiC is at the bottom.

To improve the engine-driven performance of propellants, high-energy alloys such as Al and Mg are usually adopted as annexing agents. However, there is still room for improvement in the potential full utilization of alloy energy. In this study, we investigated how to improve combustion efficiency by decorating Al3Mg2alloy with multilayer graphene and amorphous boron. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman tests showed that decorating with multilayer graphene and amorphous boron promoted the dispersion of Al3Mg2alloy. The results showed that decorating with 1% boron and 2% multilayer graphene improved the combustion heat of Al3Mg2alloy to 32.8 and 30.5 MJ/kg, respectively. The coexistence of two phases improved the combustion efficiency of the matrix Al3Mg2alloy.

Recently, tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing carbon-based metal-free catalysts as an alternative to metal-based catalysts for remediation of emerging contaminants. However, further investigations have demonstrated that the durability of carbocatalysts is poor. Therefore, it is extremely desirable to seek a novel metal-free catalyst with high efficiency and superb stability. Herein, we first discovered that amorphous boron (A-boron) can be used as a metal-free catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to produce free radicals for effective degradation of bisphenol S (BPS), which is a newly-occurring estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical. It exhibited outstanding catalytic activity and superior stability as comparing to metal-based and metal-free carbon-based catalysts. Moreover, many other typical organic pollutants in water such as bisphenol F, sulfamethoxazole, rhodamine B and methyl orange can also be effectively decomposed in A-boron/PMS oxidative system. The effects of reaction parameters on BPS degradation were systematically investigated. The catalytic oxidation mechanism was proposed. The intriguing catalytic feature of A-boron discovered in this study will provide new opportunities for the future development of A-boron based materials with promising applications in water remediation.

The microstructure of amorphous boron and the primary combustion products of boron-based fuel-rich propellant (hereafter referred to as primary combustion products) was analyzed by scanning electron microscope . Composition analysis of the primary combustion products was carried out by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The energy release properties of amorphous boron and the primary combustion products were comparatively studied by laser ignition experimental system and thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry. The primary combustion products contain B, C, Mg, Al, B 4 C, B 13 C 2 , BN, B 2 O 3 , NH 4 Cl, H 2 O, and so on. The energy release properties of primary combustion products are different from amorphous boron, significantly. The full-time spectral intensity of primary combustion products at a wavelength of 580 nm is ~2% lower than that of amorphous boron. The maximum spectral intensity of the former at full wave is ~5% higher than that of the latter. The ignition delay time of primary combustion products is ~150 ms shorter than that of amorphous boron, and the self-sustaining combustion time of the former is ~200 ms longer than that of the latter. The thermal oxidation process of amorphous boron involves water evaporation (weight loss) and boron oxidation (weight gain). The thermal oxidation process of primary combustion products involves two additional steps: NH 4 Cl decomposition (weight loss) and carbon oxidation (weight loss). CL-20 shows better combustion-supporting effect than KClO 4 in both the laser ignition experiments and the thermal oxidation experiments.

Graphical The Ni-boride/phosphide particles anchored amorphous B-doped carbon layer with hierarchical porous characteristics in Ni foam (Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF) was constructed for overall water splitting. Benefitting from the synergistic effect between Ni 3 P and Ni 3 B, the amorphous B−C layer and high space utilization of NF, the Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF electrocatalyst exhibited a desirable activity and durability for water electrolysis. The rational design of efficient and economical bifunctional electrocatalysts remained a challenge for overall water electrolysis. In this work, the Ni-boride/ phosphide particles anchored amorphous B-doped carbon layer with hierarchical porous characteristics in Ni foam (Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF) was fabricated for overall water splitting. The Boroncarbide (B 4 C) power was filled and fixed in the NF interspace through the electroplating and electroless plating, and then annealed in vacuum high temperature. The amorphous B−C layer derived from the B4 C not only speeded up the electron transport, but also cooperate with Ni-boride/phosphide to enhance the electrocatalytic activity for HER and OER synergistically. Furthermore, the hierarchical porous architecture of Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF increased space utilization to load more active materials. The self-supported Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF electrode possessed a low overpotential of 212 and 280 mV to deliver 100 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively, and high stability for 48 h. In particular, the electrolyzer constituted with the Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst only required a voltage of 1.59 V at 50 mA cm −2 for water electrocatalysis under alkaline medium, and demonstrated long-term stability for 48 h. This study provides a new technical path for the development of bifunctional of transition metal borides to promote the application of hydrogen production from water splitting.

Graphical Amorphous boron nitride nanosheets are prepared by ball milling combined with pure water exfoliation method. High ceramic content amorphous boron nitride (BN) nanosheets/polymer polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) composite solid electrolyte (CSE) are prepared by solution casting method. When PVDF-HFP accounts for 40 %, the amorphous BN nanosheets/PVDF-HFP-40 % (CSE-40 %) composite electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. Amorphous boron nitride nanosheets, with natural electrical insulation, outstanding chemical stability and mechanical properties, are introduced as a matrix to be incorporated with lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) and polymer polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (PVDF-HFP), for constructing a novel composite solid-state electrolyte by a simple solution-casting method. Amorphous boron nitride nanosheets are produced via a combination method of ball milling and pure water exfoliation. The obtained composite solid-state electrolyte containing 40 % (mass fraction) PVDF-HFP shows a high lithium ion conductivity (1.936×10 −3 S cm −1 ) and lithium ion transference number (0.47), and a wide electrochemical stability window (5 V) at room temperature. The LiFePO 4 /Li based all solid-state battery, consisting of the composite solid electrolyte (40 % PVDF-HFP), delivers a capacity of 128.1 mAh g −1 , a Coulombic efficiency of 99.79 % after 500 cycles and a capacity retention rate of 94.5 % at 1.0 C and 25 °C. The composite solid electrolyte (40 % PVDF-HFP) can maintain flat and stable stripping/plating plateaus for over 800 hours in symmetrical cells. The amorphous boron nitride nanosheets with high lithium ion conductivity are employed to construct solid-state electrolytes, which is important significant for the development of high energy density, high safety, and long cycle life all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.
