Susceptibility of traditional hydrogels to water leads to the deterioration of their mechanical properties and dimensional instability. Inspired by bone tissues, here, we report a nonswellable gradient hydrogel with adjustable mechanical properties via a simple acid-heat treatment of polyamide-based hydrogels. Both the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and crosslinking degree of the gel can be simultaneously regulated by taking advantage of the conversion of amide groups to imide groups in the hydrogel. A gradient imide structure is formed with a dense layer near the surface of the gel. The resultant hydrogel has no size change both in water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution while it shows high strength with a compressive stress of 70 MPa at 70% strain at a higher imidization degree. At a lower imidization degree, the gel has excellent fatigue resistance and resilience and can return to its original state after 5 cycles of 90% strain.

Hydrogels derived from biopolymers have numerous applications in bioengineering, drug delivery, wound healing, and wearable devices. Yet, their strong swelling and uncontrollable degradation stimulate the development of hydrogels that overcome these limitations. Here, we report nanocolloidal hydrogels formed from nanoparticles of methacryloyl-modified biopolymers that exhibit resistance to swelling and enzymatic degradation both in vitro and in vivo, along with exhibiting a broad-range of mechanical and lubrication properties, wear resistance and biocompatibility. The nonswelling behavior of nanocolloidal hydrogels takes origin in the resistance to swelling of their hydrophobic regions which are resulted from the nanophase of hydrophobic methacryloyl groups in the interior of the constituent nanoparticles. The developed approach to the preparation of nanocolloidal hydrogel with greatly enhanced properties will have applications in long-term drug delivery and cell culture, soft tissue augmentation, and implantable bioelectronics.

Injectable chitosan hydrogels exhibit excellent biological properties for application in biomedical engineering, however most of these hydrogels have limited applicability because “Swelling” can induce volume expansion of conventional hydrogels implanted in the body damages the surrounding tissues. Here, we report a new “Nonswelling” pentenyl chitosan (PTL-CS) hydrogel via N‒acylation reaction to graft an UV crosslinkable short hydrophobic alkyl chain ( n ‒pentenyl groups). The incorporated pentenyl groups can be crosslinked by UV irradiation to form hydrophobic chains via combination termination, which generate strong hydrophobic effect to extrude the excess water in hydrogel, resulting in a “Nonswelling” state at biological temperature. Furthermore, the PTL-CS solution showed no cytotoxicity in vitro and minimally invasive treatment in vivo demonstrated the PTL-CS hydrogel no adverse effects in a rat model. The nonswelling injectable and UV crosslinkable chitosan hydrogel hold potential applications in smart biomaterials and biological engineering as well as providing a new natural hydrogel in minimally invasive tissue engineering..

The discharge of emulsion, cationic dyes, and heavy metals often coexists in wastewaters, greatly enhancing the difficulty of processing. In this work, we fabricated a nonswelling silica–poly(acrylic acid) (SiO2–PAA) composite through the surface modification of SiO2 using PAA to remove emulsion, cationic dyes, and heavy metal co-contaminants simultaneously. In the SiO2–PAA composite, PAA exists in a linear and divergent form rather than a network structure. Thus, SiO2–PAA can gain the nonswelling property, provide abundant carboxyl groups as the binding sites for removal of pollutants, which is an important advanced feature of PAA-based materials, and improve the potential of practical application. The characterization results of SiO2–PAA demonstrated that PAA was successfully grafted on SiO2. In a monocomponent system, SiO2–PAA exhibited excellent separation efficiency for cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-stabilized emulsion separation and admirable adsorption capacity of 758.6 and 178.6 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) and Cr(III). This finding was ascribed to the exposure of carboxyl groups in SiO2–PAA, which could increase the mass transfer efficiency. Importantly, the SiO2–PAA composite exhibited high efficiency in the simultaneous uptake of CTAB-stabilized emulsion, MB, and Cr(III) co-contaminants. Thus, given the simple fabrication, efficient emulsion separation, admirable adsorption capacity, and excellent reusability of SiO2–PAA, it exhibits striking potential for the efficient treatment of coexisting pollutants.

Hydrogels are widely used as wound dressings for wound healing, but when hydrogels absorb wound exudate, swelling occurs and compresses the surrounding tissue, affecting healing. A chitosan injectable (CS/4-PA/CAT) hydrogel based on catechol and 4-glutenoic acid was prepared to avoid swelling and promote wound healing. After cross-linking by UV light, pentenyl groups formed hydrophobic alkyl chains which give the hydrogel a hydrophobic network and thus control its swelling. CS/4-PA/CAT hydrogels retained their non-swelling for a long time in PBS solution at 37 °C. CS/4-PA/CAT hydrogels had good injectable and adhesive properties, and had a good killing effect on E. coli and S. aureus and could remove the bacterial biofilms of E. coli and S. aureus . CS/4-PA/CAT hydrogels had good in vitro coagulation function by absorbing red blood cells and platelets. When used in a whole skin injury model, CS/4-PA/CAT-1 hydrogel stimulated fibroblast migration, promoted epithelialization and accelerated collagen deposition to promote defect healing, and showed good hemostatic effects in liver and femoral artery defects in mice. In summary, the non-swelling injectable hydrogel with free radical scavenging, rapid hemostasis, and antibacterial effects would be a promising treatment for defect repair.

Although conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for developing highly flexible sensors in recent years, traditional hydrogels are prone to swelling, which significantly compromises sensor performance. To address this issue, a non-swelling hydrogel is prepared through a one-step radical polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), tannic acid (TA), and quaternized chitosan (QCS) in aqueous water. The resultant poly(AA-HEMA)-QCS-TA (PAHCT) hydrogel features a highly crosslinked network, attributed to the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds among the abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in AA, TA, and QCS, the electrostatic interactions between poly(AA-HEMA) and QCS, as well as polymer chain entanglements. This innovative architecture significantly enhances the anti-swelling ability of the PAHCT conductive hydrogel, achieving an equilibrium swelling ratio of 5.5% in water, along with remarkable tensile properties, reaching an elongation of 990%. Furthermore, the introduction of TA further improves the hydrogel's adhesion, ensuring its durability for long-term service. Consequently, strain sensors based on the non-swelling PAHCT hydrogel are capable of effectively monitoring human activities across various strain range and enabling reliable underwater communication. These findings open new avenues for the development of wearable sensors in amphibious environments, broadening the application scope of wearable electronics.

Underwater adhesives have drawn much attention in the areas of industrial and biomedical fields. However, it is still demanding to construct a tough underwater gel-based adhesive completely based on chemical constitution. Herein, a nonswellable and high-strength underwater adhesive gel is successfully fabricated through the random copolymerization of acrylic acid, butyl acrylate, and acrylated adenine in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The underwater adhesive behavior is skillfully regulated through hydrophobic aggregation induced by water–DMSO solvent exchange. The adhesive gels exhibit an excellent adhesive behavior for polytetrafluoroethylene, plastics, metals, rubber, and glasses in air and various aqueous solutions, including deionized water, seawater, and acid and alkali solutions (pH = 3 and 10, respectively). Moreover, the adhesive gels exhibited robust mechanical performance and remarkable nonswellable behavior, which were particularly important for applications of gel-based adhesives in water. It is anticipated that the strategy of bioinspired nucleobase-assisted underwater adhesive gel via hydrophobic aggregation induced by solvent exchange would provide an inspiration for the development of underwater adhesives.

Flexible wearable sensors are of interest for underwater applications such as aquatic robots and marine exploration. Non-swelling hydrogels would be a preferable candidate for underwater sensing with stable sensing performance. Herein, hydrogels comprised of MXene and polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate (PHEMA) are designed and manufactured. Owing to the synergistic effect of phase separation zones and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interaction, MXene/PHEMA hydrogels exhibit non-swelling performance in various liquid media (e.g., water, seawater) and effectively avoid the adhesion of proteins and bacteria. In addition, MXene/PHEMA hydrogels exhibit a large sensing range (more than 400%), high tensile strength (0.54 MPa), and skin-compliance modulus (120 kPa). Furthermore, the resulted hydrogel-based sensors possess superior sensibility (4.42 at 150–450% strain), fast responsiveness (200 ms), and durable sensing ability (over 1000 cycles). The hydrogel-based sensors can accurately monitor human motions (both large and subtle motions) in air and in various liquid media. Benefiting from the non-swelling and anti-fouling ability, the hydrogels could maintain high mechanical strength and cyclic stability after being immersed in water for 30 days, and precisely detect the movement of human and shark models underwater. It is conceivable that non-swelling and anti-fouling MXene/PHEMA hydrogels provide a feasible material to construct electronic skins for various harsh liquid environments.

Wet-resistant flexible electronics have gained impressive attention as underwater wearable sensors, all-weather electronic skins, and implantable bioelectrodes. However, fabricating a stable and nonswelling hydrogel-based electronic device used in diverse liquid media is challenging and promising for the progress of wet-resistance electronics. Herein, a solvent-resistant and tough hydrogel conductor is successfully prepared and exhibits fatigue resistance, antifreezing behavior, and nonswelling and wet-adhesion performances in organic and aqueous solutions. Moreover, the hydrogels are utilized as all-weather wearable sensors featuring high sensitivity, reliability, and wide sensing ranges for monitoring and distinguishing various physiological signals and human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel sensors can even achieve accurate and stable mechanical sensing of pressure, bending, and stretching in diverse solvents consisting of water, chloroform, hexane, and dodecane. It is envisioned that the solvent-resistant and antifreezing hydrogel conductor can present promising feasibility as all-weather electronic skins, intelligent sensors in solvents, and soft robots in various harsh liquid environments.
