Thermally Activated Multilayered Carbon Cloth as Flexible Supercapacitor Electrode Material with Significantly Enhanced Areal Energy Density

Qinghua Wang,Wenhao Ren,Feng Gao,Chunyu Qiu,Qingxiang Wang,Fei Gao,Chuan Zhao

Graphical Areal capacitance as high as 3291 mF/cm 2 was obtained for carbon cloth by thermal treatment. Carbon cloth, an inexpensive and conductive textile, holds great promise as substrate for constructing electrical double-layer capacitors due to its mechanical and electrochemical superiority. However, its widespread application is significantly hampered by the intrinsic low specific capacity. In this work, we demonstrate that the areal capacitance of commercial carbon cloth is raised for 800-folds by a direct thermal activation strategy. When evaluated as the symmetric supercapacitor electrodes, thermally activated carbon cloth (TACC) displays the outstanding performance with areal capacitance up to 3291 mF cm −2 and the energy density of 740 μW h cm −2 at a power density of 9000 μW cm −2 . In addition, the TACC-based electrode reserves 95.2 % capacitance after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles in a neutral NaBF 4 electrolyte, showing outstanding cycle durability of the material. This work offers a foolproof and scalable method to prepare flexible electrode materials for wearable energy storage devices.

3D Copper Foam@FeOx Nanoarrays as a High Areal Capacity and Stable Electrode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Feng Zhang,Chengkai Yang,Huanqin Guan,Yiran Hu,Can Jin,Henghui Zhou,Limin Qi

Despite remarkable development in high capacity iron oxide-based electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the low mass loading and poor areal capacity still impede their practical applications. In this report, novel FeOx nanoarrays were directly constructed on three-dimensional (3D) copper foam current collector (denoted as CF@FeOx NAs) via facile hydrothermal growth followed by a postannealing process. The nanoarrays were stacked by numerous FeOx porous nanoblocks, exhibiting a unique hierarchical structure. The loading density of FeOx in the CF@FeOx NAs reached 2.5 mg cm–2 owing to the hierarchical structure of the novel 3D nanoarray electrode. When tested as an anode for LIBs, the 3D integrated electrode delivered high areal capacities of 3.33 and 2.61 mAh cm–2 at 0.25 and 1.25 mA cm–2, respectively. A high areal capacity of 2.12 mAh cm–2 was retained at 2.5 mA cm–2 after 500 cycles, which is the best electrochemical performance in terms of areal capacity for the iron oxide-based electrodes reported so far. Even at a higher current density of 12.5 mA cm–2, the areal capacity was still maintained at 0.96 mAh cm–2, demonstrating good rate capability. A lithium full cell test was also conducted using LiNi0.8Co0.05Al0.15 (NCA) as a cathode and the CF@FeOx NAs as an anode, which exhibited a good areal capacity of 0.94 mAh cm–2 at 2.5 mA cm–2 after 50 cycles. This work offers a promising pathway to greatly enhance the loading density and areal capacity of metal oxide-based electrodes for electrochemical energy storage.

Mussel and Cobweb Inspired High Areal Capacity SPAN Electrode

Weijing Zuo,Yawei Guo,Chi Zhang,Lan Zhang,Suojiang Zhang

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) with superior energy density are among the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage techniques. Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) exhibits competitive advantages in terms of cycle stability, rate performance as well as cost. However, the preparation of high-loading SPAN electrodes is still challenging. Herein, inspired by mussel and cobweb, a high-loading SPAN electrode is enabled by the combination of polydopamine (PDA) coating and a bimodal distributed single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) slurry dispersed in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), their synergistic effect not only constructs effective electron percolating networks within the electrode but also make high active material (AM) ratio possible. High areal capacity PDA@SPAN electrode (18.40 mAh cm −2 in the initial cycle) with negligible specific capacity attenuation as the mass loading increasement is realized through the facile slurry casting process. The dynamic N─H…O hydrogen bond is formed between PDA and PVP and the electrode integrity during charge/discharge is greatly strengthened. The battery with an areal AM loading of 7.16 mg cm −2 (5.16 mAh cm −2 ) retains 92.0% of capacity in 80 cycles and 87.18% in 160 cycles, and it also shows stable cycle performances even with a high loading of 19.79 mg cm −2 and lean electrolyte (3.28 µL mg −1 ).

Monolithic Microparticles Facilitated Flower-Like TiO2 Nanowires for High Areal Capacity Flexible Li-Ion Batteries

Li Luo,Kui Liang,Zeba Khanam,Xincheng Yao,Muhammad Mushtaq,Ting Ouyang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun,Yexiang Tong

Flexible lithium-ion batteries (FLIBs) are intensively studied using free-standing transition metal oxides (TMOs)-based anode materials. However, achieving high areal capacity TMO-based anode materials is yet to be effectively elucidated owing to the poor adhesion of the active materials to the flexible substrate resulting in low active mass loading, and hence low areal capacity is realized. Herein, a novel monolithic rutile TiO 2 microparticles on carbon cloth (ATO/CC) that facilitate the flower-like arrangement of TiO 2 nanowires (denoted ATO/CC/OTO) is demonstrated as high areal capacity anode for FLIBs. The optimized ATO/CC/OTO anode exhibits high areal capacity (5.02 mAh cm −2 @0.4 mA cm −2 ) excellent rate capability (1.17 mAh cm −2 @5.0 mA cm −2 ) and remarkable cyclic stability (over 500 cycles). A series of morphological, kinetic, electrochemical, in situ Raman, and theoretical analyses reveal that the rational phase boundaries between the microparticles and nanowires contribute to promoting the Li storage activity. Furthermore, a 16.0 cm 2 all-FLIB pouch cell assembled based on the ATO/CC/OTO anode and LiNiCoMnO 2 cathode coated on ATO/CC (ATO/CC/LNCM) exhibits impressive flexibility under different folding conditions, creating opportunity for the development of high areal capacity anodes in future flexible energy storage devices.

Design of high-energy-dissipation, deformable binder for high-areal-capacity silicon anode in lithium-ion batteries

Linlin Hu,Xudong Zhang,Bing Li,Mihan Jin,Xiaohui Shen,Zongwu Luo,Zhanyuan Tian,Lizhi Yuan,Junkai Deng,Zhengfei Dai,Jiangxuan Song

Although silicon has the highest theoretical capacity among the existing anode materials, its practical application is highly hindered by huge interface stress arising from large volume change upon cycling. Herein, an efficient energy-dissipation engineering was harnessed on high-capacity silicon anodes through a synergized “static” (chemically crosslinking) and “dynamic” (physically crosslinking) binder. In this dual network, the disassociation of non-covalent hydrogen bonds greatly facilitates the dispersion and release of unfavorable stress, while the permanent chemical bonding network enables a deformable network to sustain the electrode structure. Such a strategy effectively avoids both materials and electrodes deterioration and promises a better Si-based anode: a high areal capacity of 2 mAh cm −2 with capacity retention of 91.3% after 200 cycles. Meanwhile, the energy-dissipation mechanism was further clarified by temperature-dependent FTIR and finite element simulations.

Constructing a Highly Efficient Aligned Conductive Network to Facilitate Depolarized High-Areal-Capacity Electrodes in Li-Ion Batteries

Kai Yang,Luyi Yang,Zijian Wang,Bin Guo,Zhibo Song,Yanda Fu,Yuchen Ji,Mingqiang Liu,Wenguang Zhao,Xinhua Liu,Shichun Yang,Feng Pan

In order to prepare electrodes with high mass loading and areal capacities, the key issue is to achieve depolarization for both ion and electron transfer on the electrode material surface. In this work, through copolymerization of xanthan gum (XG) and amorphophallus konjac gum (KG) followed by an ice-templating method, aligned electrodes with high areal mass loading of active materials are prepared. In addition to firmly holding active materials together, the prepared KG–XG copolymer also facilitates improved effective porosity as well as homogeneous dispersion of conductive agents (i.e., CNTs). Consequently, with minimum inactive components (i.e., binder and conductive agents), the proposed electrode structure delivers good cycling stability and rate capability under high areal loading (as high as 200 mg cm −2 ). The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique aligned structure where the robust conductive network provides an efficient electron and lithium-ion pathway, and the homogenous porosity is beneficial for the electrolyte percolation, hence the reduced polarization during charge transfer. In addition, this electrode preparation method is found to be universal as it is suitable for various types of anode and cathode materials.

3D Printed Flexible Zinc Ion Micro-Batteries with High Areal Capacity Toward Practical Application

Yongyi Lu,Zhihao Wang,Min Li,Zongyang Li,Xinyu Hu,Qunjie Xu,Yuehui Wang,Haimei Liu,Yonggang Wang

Printed zinc ion micro-batteries (PZIMBs) possess characteristics such as miniaturization, customizability, and affordability, making them highly promising for the field of flexible electronic devices. Nevertheless, the current development of PZIMBs is seriously hindered by their limited areal capacity. In this study, PZIMBs with a high areal capacity are conducted based on 3D printing technology by optimizing the material properties, electrode ink formulation, and printing parameters. The cathode material, polyvinylpyrrolidone-induced ammonium vanadate (P-NVO) nanobelt, exhibits a high capacity of 457.3 mAh g −1 at 0.1 mA g −1 , along with good cycling performance and rate capability. The double-network hydrogel electrolyte, composed of crosslinked polyacrylamide-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAM-PVP hydrogel electrolyte), demonstrates excellent ionic conductivity (107.22 mS cm −1 ), high stretchability (970%), and viscosity. The constructed PZIMBs exhibit a high areal capacity of 4.02 mAh cm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 , along with good mechanical flexibility. Moreover, through the integration of PZIMBs with pressure sensors, an interactive system is developed that resembles electronic skin, and this integration enables practical applications of wearable devices. This study presents a novel approach for fabricating PZIMBs with high areal capacity, thereby contributing to and propelling the advancement of flexible energy storage.

Vanadium-Mediated High Areal Capacity Zinc–Manganese Redox Flow Battery

Jinpeng Cao,Kaifeng Yu,Jianing Zhang,Biao Lu,Juezhi Yu,Shiqiang Huang,Feifei Zhang

Aqueous manganese redox flow batteries (AMRFBs) that rely on the two-electron transfer reaction of Mn2+/MnO2 have garnered significant interest because of their affordability, high voltage, and excellent safety features. Nevertheless, the deposited MnO2 tends to partially dissolve during discharge, impeding the sustained operation of AMRFBs, particularly at high areal capacities (>5 mA h cm–2). Herein, VO2+/VO2+ was introduced into the catholyte as a redox mediator (RM) to facilitate the efficient dissolution/deposition process of MnO2. In situ UV–vis spectroscopy and kinetic analysis elucidated the swift reaction mechanism between MnO2 and VO2+, which allows for efficient rejuvenation of “dead” MnO2 with facile amounts of mediator, further achieving a highly reversible MnO2 cathode. The assembled zinc–manganese redox flow battery with RM demonstrates a high Coulombic efficiency of 99% at 20 mA h cm–2 over 50 cycles. The areal capacity is further increased to 50 mA h cm–2, achieving an exceptional areal energy density exceeding 100 mW h cm–2, surpassing most reported areal capacity in the AMRFB. This work introduces a novel RM to address “dead” MnO2 and sheds valuable insights into the reaction mechanism between MnO2 and RM, which will promote the development of other deposition-type batteries.

Facile anodization approach derived low-crystalline NiCoOH/NiCoOOH composite films for ultra-high areal capacity and mass loading supercapacitors

Mingyuan Gao,Yuexin Liu,Xiaoyu Li,Ying Liu,Zixing Wang,Kefeng Cai

The design of supercapacitor materials with both high areal capacity ( C ) and high mass loading is vitally important for enhancing energy density ( E ). Herein, we prepared a NiCo OH/NiCoOOH composite film consisting of NiCo OH/NiCoOOH nanosheets on an expanded graphite paper (EGP) by using a facial anodization method. The as-prepared NiCo OH/NiCoOOH film exhibits ultra-high C of 11 mA·h·cm −2 at a mass loading of 165 mg·cm −2 , high rate capability of 71% and excellent cycling stability of 95% after 12 000 cycles. The outstanding performance is ascribed to the low-crystalline feature of the NiCo OH/NiCoOOH nanosheets, and the synergistic effect of the NiCo OH and NiCoOOH phases and high conductive porous EGP. An aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor, assembled with the NiCo OH/NiCoOOH on EGP and Fe 2 O 3 on EGP as positive- and negative-electrode, respectively, shows a highest E of 3.8 mW·h·cm −2 at a power density ( P ) of 4 mW·cm −2 and a maximum P of 107 mW·cm −2 at an E of 2.7 mW·h·cm −2 .

A Lithium-Metal Anode with Ultra-High Areal Capacity (50 mAh cm−2) by Gridding Lithium Plating/Stripping

Pan Xu,Xinyu Hu,Xiaoyu Liu,Xiaodong Lin,Xiaoxiang Fan,Xueyang Cui,Cui Sun,Qihui Wu,Xiaobing Lian,Ruming Yuan,Mingsen Zheng,Quanfeng Dong

ABSTRACT Lithium dendrites, “dead lithium”, infinite volume change and fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) appear indefinitely during Li plating/stripping process, which severely resist the practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, by a functionalized framework, a phosphorized copper mesh as support skeleton, the lithium plating/stripping has been gridded into zoning effect, thus a desired lithium anode with excellent performance and practical application significance can be achieved. The framework-based lithium anode showed multi-functions with many advantages: enhancing lithium affinity, mitigating volume expansion, improving the current distributions, and inducing uniform deposition of Li + . Thus, a highly reversible and dendrite-free lithium anode under large capacity could be successfully realized, which has been verified by operando optical dynamic test and COMSOL simulation. As expected, symmetric-cell displays low overpotential (~210 mV) at ultra-high current density of 20 mA cm −2 and long lifespan (>1600 h) at ultra-high areal capacity of 50 mAh cm −2 , moreover, full-cell delivers high cycling stability (2 C, 500 cycles) and outstanding rate performance with a lower polarization.

Regulating the Interfacial Solvation Environment by a Pyran-Based Polymer for High-Areal-Capacity and Low-Temperature-Endurable Magnesium Metal Batteries

Tengfei Wang,Keyi Chen,Guyue Li,Zhang Chen,Yanfeng Gao,Chilin Li

Regulating the artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and interfacial solvation structure of the electrolyte is crucial for developing rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) with long cycling life, high current density tolerance, and fast ion transport capability operated under extreme environments, such as low temperatures. Herein, an effective strategy using oligomeric poly(3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran) (polyDHP) is proposed to modulate the interfacial solvation structure of RMBs, with the construction of an artificial SEI with rapid Mg-ion conductivity. The steric hindrance of polyDHP and its electrostatic interaction with Mg2+ reduce the solvent molecules in the first solvation shell, allowing polyDHP molecules to participate in coordination, thus lowering the desolvation energy barrier of Mg2+ and facilitating their deposition and stripping. Furthermore, due to the glass transition behavior, oligomeric polyDHP exhibits a more ordered structure with more continuous internal ion transport channels at −20 °C, therefore enabling stable RMB operation at lower temperatures for the first time. The corresponding Mg symmetric cells display a much lower overpotential (400 mV) and excellent cycling stability at both room temperature (over 5000 h at 5 mA cm–2 and 10 mA h cm–2) and a low temperature of −20 °C (over 1300 h at 3 mA cm–2 and 3 mA h cm–2). This strategy supports the stable cycling of CuS∥Mg full cells for over 200 cycles at −20 °C. This work reveals the importance of regulating the interfacial solvation structure, promoting the realistic applications of RMBs under extreme conditions.

Insight of the evolution of structure and energy storage mechanism of (FeCoNiCrMn)3O4 spinel high entropy oxide in life-cycle span as lithium-ion battery anode

Feiyue Zhai,Xiayu Zhu,Wenfeng Zhang,Gaoping Cao,Huimin Zhang,Yalan Xing,Yu Xiang,Shichao Zhang

Recently, spinel high-entropy oxide (HEO) anode materials have garnered extensive attention for high-energy lithium-ion batteries due to their high specific capacity. Many studies have explored its energy storage mechanism, but few have paid attention to its characteristics in long cycle life. In this work, the whole life cycling performance of (FeCoNiCrMn)-HEO is presented and investigated for the first time. Distinct capacity trends are studied to divide the cycling life into three stages: activation, upgradation, and degradation. Ex situ morphological characterizations are conducted to reveal that the driving force of stage change is continuous particle fragmentation. As a result, refined particles promote conversion reaction reversibility and induce extra interfacial capacity, achieving 2831 mAh g −1 at 825 cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide a deeper insight into the high entropy effect on the ultra-high extra interfacial capacity. However, continuous refinement brings about huge electrolyte interface-derived layers, which are also responsible for pre-decay and post-collapse. The view of the evolution of the lithium storage mechanism is explicitly presented and experimentally verified by high-energy ball milling and fluorinated vinyl carbonate (FEC). These above results can give practical solutions to design high specific capacity and long-life cycle stability HEO anode in the future.
