The sodium (Na) anode suffers severe interfacial resistance and dendrite issues in a classic NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) electrolyte, resulting in poor electrochemical performance for solid-state Na metal batteries. There has been little success in the reduction of interfacial resistance in recent years. The exact mechanism of this resistance has not been fully understood because of little information about the interface. In this work, we effectively address the large interfacial resistance issue and the metal dendrite problem between the Na anode and NZSP by introducing a TiO2 film as an active interphase. We employ quasiinsitu X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to uncover the interphase formation mechanism at the Na/TiO2–NZSP electrolyte interface. Our quasiinsitu XPS results confirm the formation of a sodiated-TiO2 interphase upon stepwise Na evaporation on the surface of the NZSP electrolyte. Further investigation by molten Na contact angle measurements, impedance spectroscopy and DFT calculations demonstrates that the sodiated-TiO2 interphase promotes Na ion transport between the Na anode and NZSP electrolyte. Moreover, the electrostatic potential formed at the NZSP/NaxTiO2 interface can effectively reduce electronic conductivity at the interface and hence prevent the growth of sodium dendrites. A representative paradigm for interphase design is provided to address the interface contact for developing stable solid-state batteries with high performance.

The electrochemical oscillation of Li-ion batteries is a novel electrochemical phenomenon, which has been discovered in two-phase materials of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 and LiCrTiO 4 . To analyze the electrochemical oscillation in this work, a three-electrode coin cell was designed and assembled with a specialized reference electrode, based on the conventional two-electrode coin cell. In the three-electrode coin cell, a Li-deficient Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 material exhibits a distinct electrochemical oscillation during the galvanostatic charge process, and its electrochemical kinetics was studied by in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with two other Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 materials without electrochemical oscillation, the Li-deficient Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 material had an evidently larger resistance of the SEI layer (R sei ) and charge transfer resistance (R ct ) in the EIS spectra. When the electrochemical oscillation emerged, the Warburg impedance (W s ) dramatically transformed into the capacitive impedance in the EIS spectra, indicating that the intraparticle phase separation had been replaced by the interparticle phase separation. This study further confirmed the reaction process of electrochemical oscillation proposed in our previous work, so as to finally reveal the underlying mechanism of this novel phenomenon.

By free radical polymerizing methylacrylylethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), styrene (ST), and methoxy polyethylene glycol acrylate (MPEGA), a novel type of hydrophilic polymer antistatic agent (PDSM) was created. By utilizing FT-IR and 1 H NMR, the structure and properties of the PDSM copolymer were investigated. By using the melt blending approach, composites made of ABS (acrylonitrile-styrene-butadiene copolymer)/PDSM were generated. The composites’ mechanical characteristics and surface resistivity were measured. The results indicated that PDSM was evenly dispersed on the inner surface of ABS resin, resulting in a continuous conductive network, and serving the intended function of long-lasting antistatic. The surface resistance of ABS composites could be greatly decreased using the PDSM copolymer antistatic agent. Surface resistivity of ABS/PDSM composites were around 10 9 -10 10 Ω when the proportion of PDSM copolymer was up to 15 wt%. As MPEGA concentration increased, the surface resistivity of ABS/PDSM materials declined because MPEGA comprised hydrophilic ether bonds and flexible side chains.

Due to the degradation of lithium-metal anode, lithium dendritic growth and other challenging problems like interface resistance among electrolyte and electrode may damage the actual performance of lithium-metal batteries (LMB). Recently, ceramic nanofillers Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7P(O4)3 (LATP) and Li0.33La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) seem to be suitable solid-state electrolytes for lithium metallic solid-state batteries with outstanding energy densities and highly safer energy storage devices. Herein, the solid-state electrolytic materials are composed of a fast ion-conducting solid-state LATP, LLTO, and optimized amount of adequate polarized poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) electrolyte with lithium salt (LiClO4) to fabricate the dual semi-solid-state polymer electrolyte (DSPE) membrane. The prepared membrane provides a promising solution for battery safety and the most challenging problems of interface resistance. The proposed DSPE membrane is investigated via analytical techniques; testing results showed that the DSPE membrane possesses excellent electrochemical performance, including suitable Li-transference numbers and improved ionic conductivities with enhanced stability. Furthermore, the DSPE membrane is beneficial to resist the growth of Li dendrites effectively. The symmetrical cell Li//DSPE//Li exhibits excellent stability at a high current density of 1 mA/cm2 over 1000 h, and the membrane sustains long-cycle performance with a high retention of 95% after 100 cycles. The designed DSPE membrane opens a path of fabricating a safe electrolyte membrane for elevated temperature metal-ion battery applications.

Adopting inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) is a promising approach to assemble batteries using Li metal anodes because of their superior Li-ion conductivity and high mechanical strength. This approach greatly improves the energy density and the safety of batteries. However, lithium dendrites still can pierce the bare ISE because of inhomogeneous current distributions at interfaces, leading to serious short circuits. This work proposes to reduce the interfacial resistance and prevent lithium dendrite growth simultaneously through in situ formation of interlayers enabled by a conversion reaction of MoS2 layers coated on a bare Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZO) pellet. The interfacial resistance is reduced to only 14 Ω cm2, with the overpotential decreasing notably. The critical current density of cells is improved from 0.7 mA cm−2 to 2.2 mA cm−2. Furthermore, short circuits are significantly suppressed above the critical current density with the potential diverging quickly. The cell can be recovered to some extent by applying an inverse potential for a short time. The comparison between XPS and XAS measurements reveals that the nanoscale thin MoS2 layer in contact with the Li anode can be converted into an interlayer composed of Mo and Li2S through the conversion reaction. The sluggish kinetics of the conversion reaction resulting from the poor electronic conductivity makes the in situ-formed interlayer kinetically stable, which can hinder further reaction of MoS2 with Li effectively. Moreover, the in situ reaction could suppress the local tip electric field effect efficiently and make the current distribution more even. This study provides a new strategy to optimize the interface of anodes by screening for more candidates which undergo a conversion reaction.

A garnet-type solid-state electrolyte Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) was modified using dopamine to improve the wettability of LLZTO with PEO, allowing 80 wt% LLZTO to be uniformly dispersed in 20 wt% PEO/LiTFSI polymer electrolyte. Transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed a 4–5 nm thick polydopamine (PDA) layer coating on LLZTO nanoparticles. The composite LLZTO@PDA/PEO electrolyte was synthesized using a solvent casting method. The composite electrolyte has good compatibility and adhesion with both positive and negative electrodes of Li-ion batteries owing to the superior wetting capability of dopamine. This property allows for improved interfacial contact at the electrode/solid electrolyte interface which can decrease the overall resistance of the battery. With dopamine modification, the conductivity of the composite electrolyte at 30 °C increased from 6.3 × 10−5 S cm−1 to 1.1 × 10−4 S cm−1, and the interfacial resistance between the composite electrolyte and a metallic lithium anode decreased from 308 Ω cm2 to 65 Ω cm2 at 50 °C. The composite electrolyte also demonstrated improved thermal stability.

Unexpected interface resistance and lithium dendrite puncture hinder the application of garnet-type solid-state electrolytes in high-energy-density systems. Different from the previous high-temperature (>180 °C) molten lithium that promotes the alloying reaction between the coating layer and Li to enhance the interface contact, herein, we introduce liquid-metal-like SbCl3 to construct a three-dimensional Li+ directional-selection interlayer by in situ low-temperature lithiation (80 °C). An interlayer with a more negative interface energy composed of SbLi3 and LiCl exhibits a superior affinity with Li and LGLZO, which reduces the interface resistance and suppresses the growth of Li dendrites by an insulated electron. The introduction of the SbCl3 modification layer into Li/Li symmetric cells enables charge/discharge at a current density of 6.0 mA cm–2 and operation for more than 1000 h under 2.0 mA cm–2 at room temperature. The full cells with the LiFePO4 cathode exhibit a high residual capacity of 144.8 mAh g–1 at 0.5 C after 1000 cycles and excellent cycling stability with a retention ratio of 94.7% at 1 C after 600 cycles. The low-temperature lithiation method based on an energy-saving perspective should be applied to other types of solid-state electrolyte modification strategies.

The application of ceramic garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 electrolytes is restricted by the challenge of poor contact with metallic lithium, which results in high interfacial resistance, uneven current distribution, and severe lithium dendrite penetration. Herein, a remarkably ultra-low interfacial impedance (∼2.7 Ω cm2) is achieved by employing Si addition into molten Li, because of the realized intimate interface contact resulting from the decreased surface tension of molten Li and, most importantly, the reinforced interfacial connection as a result of the minor reaction between the Li4.4Si and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO), further improving charge transfer across the Li/LLZTO interface. The generated Li4.4Si at the interface (I-Li4.4Si), showing strong combination with garnet, can function as a “rivet” for the stable interface upon cycling. Moreover, the I-Li4.4Si species with Li+ diffusivity favor the reduced local current density and thus the decreased over-potential to some extent. Thus, the resulting symmetric Li–Li4.4Si|LLZTO|Li–Li4.4Si cell delivers a stable Li plating–stripping performance for over 1200 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2 (1000 h)/0.2 mA cm−2 (200 h) and a temperature of 60 °C with a small over-potential (5.3 mV@0.1 mA cm−2; 10.2 mV@0.2 mA cm−2). The fabricated full cell with a LiFePO4 cathode delivers a high reversible capacity of ∼169 mA h g−1 at 0.05C and excellent cycling stability with a capacity decay rate of only 0.038% per cycle.

Graphical This paper presents a straightforward preparation method for LLZTO electrolyte tablets with minimal surface passivation layer content. Through experimentation, the optimal conditions for process parameters including mixed powder content, PVA content, and cold pressing pressure are identified. Under these optimized conditions, the LLZTO electrolyte tablets demonstrate a notable enhancement in quality and a reduction in interface resistance, leading to improved electrochemical performance. The garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) is a widely studied solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) due to its high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, the conventional preparation process of LLZTO electrolyte tablets has encountered several issues such as powder embedment in the mold gaps and inadequate bonding between powders, leading to fragile electrolyte tablets that are prone to cracking. In this study, the effects of LLZTO electrolyte tablet pressing process parameters, including mixed powder content, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) content and cold pressing pressure, on the electrochemical properties of button cells were investigated. The results indicated that the produced solid-state electrolyte tablets with high quality, low interfacial resistance and low surface passivation layer (Li 2 CO 3 ) content was obtained by using 0.8 g of mixed powder content, 0.7 g of PVA content and 20Mpa pressure. The interface resistance decreased from 2927.1 Ω to 1069.7 Ω under these conditions. Additionally, the Li symmetric cell treated with adhesive exhibited stable cycling for over 400 hours at 25 °C under a current density of 0.1 mA ⋅ cm −2 .

In this paper, 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized bacterial cellulose (TOBC) nanofiber membranes as separators of lithium-ion batteries were successfully prepared from a water dispersion of TOBC nanofibers via a vacuum filtration approach. The TOBC membranes had adequate porosity and desirable affinity with the liquid electrolyte and lithium electrode, giving rise to superior electrolyte uptake and small interfacial resistance. Among the TOBC nanofiber samples, the TOBC1.0 membrane exhibited the best properties, including high electrolyte uptake (339 %), superior electrochemical stability window (>6.0 V), outstanding ionic conductivity (13.45 mS cm −1 ) and small interfacial resistance (96 Ω). The half cells obtained using the TOBC1.0 membrane achieved a discharge capacity of 166 mA h g −1 (0.2 C), corresponding to 97.6 % of the theoretical value of LiFePO 4 (170 mA h g −1 ), excellent cycle stability (with capacity retention of 94 % after 100 cycles) at 0.2 C and good C-rate performance. Thus, the TOBC nanofiber membranes could be considered as a promising high-performance separator used in lithium-ion batteries.

Polymer/ceramic layered composite electrolytes have become promising electrolytes for Li metal batteries (LMBs) due to their high ionic conductivity, good mechanical properties, favorable wettability and excellent chemical stability to Li metal. However, the complexity of the preparation process and the increased interfacial resistance have hindered their extensive application in LMBs. To address these problems, we prepared a mesoporous epoxy resin matrix multilayer electrolyte composited with lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) nanoparticles (c-EME) using the traditional direct casting method. The c-EME possesses a high ionic conductivity of 2.02 × 10−3 S cm−1, a large Li-ion transference number of 0.82, a wide electrochemical stability window of up to 5.5 V (vs. Li+/Li) at room temperature and a smaller interfacial resistance compared with the pure epoxy resin matrix electrolyte (EME). In addition, the c-EME with a multilayer structure could infiltrate the electrode surface sufficiently and maintain uniform Li deposition even at a high current density, up to 4 mA cm−2, with an areal capacity of 12 mA h cm−2. Furthermore, the assembled LiFePO4/Li full battery with c-EME exhibits high cycling stability and superior rate performance. Our recent results provide a new avenue for developing a low cost, simple fabrication process for access to high safety and high stability LMBs based on porous epoxy resin-matrix electrolytes.

Antistatic technology has been applied in all aspects of modern life, including the manufacture of electronic products, aerospace systems, daily necessities and so on. The main purpose of this study is to obtain, using the Mayer rod-coating method, a flexible antistatic film with high transmittance, low sheet resistance and strong adhesion. With the help of the dispersant, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were dispersed in water to form an homogeneous dispersion. The SWCNT dispersion was coated onto a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film with use of a rod to produce a uniform film. The antistatic films obtained had special characteristics, such as high transparency, low sheet resistance and excellent resistance to water and heat. Sheet resistance varied between 102–105 Ω sq−1 by controlling the content of water-based polyurethane (WPU), changing the thickness of the films and the post-treatment. The best film had a sheet resistance of 423 Ω sq−1 with 82.7% transmittance. In particular, the addition of the WPU binder greatly improved the adhesion between the CNTs and the PET film. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Scotch™ tape method were conducted to determine the microstructure, cleanliness, and adhesion of the film, respectively.
