To minimize manganese loss during acid leaching and to enhance the lithium adsorption capacity from shale gas wastewater of H 1.33 Mn 1.67 O 4 , this adsorbent material was doped with metallic elements in this study. Doping was achieved using solid-phase synthesis, resulting first in a Li 1.33 R X Mn 1.67−X O 4 (R = Fe, Ni, Al) precursor powder through high-temperature calcination. Then, lithium was leached out under acidic environment to obtain the desired H 1.33 R X Mn 1.67−X O 4 (HMO-R) adsorbents. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of HMO-R powders were measured as 20.7 mg/g, 20.7 mg/g, and 29.0 mg/g, for Fe, Ni, and Al dopants, respectively, surpassing that of the former H 1.33 Mn 1.67 O 4 (13.7 mg/L). Moreover, an average reduction of manganese loss by 30% for HMO-R was observed during lithium recovery/extraction cycles by acid leaching compared to undoped Li 1.33 Mn 1.67 O 4 . Overall, the doped adsorbent exhibited a stable crystal structure and high adsorption capacity, enhanced stability, performance, and efficiency in cycling experiments with respect to the undoped material.

Shale gas wastewater is a hypersaline industrial effluent in demand of efficient treatment or resource recovery. Membrane distillation (MD) is a heat-driven desalination process of high potential to deal with such streams. However, its application is highly limited by the unsatisfactory hydrophobic membranes that involve a trade-off between vapor permeability and fouling/wetting resistance. Our previous studies highlighted the potential role of an intermediate coating layer of a carbon nanotube (CNT) for the superhydrophobic membrane with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS) grafted to address the trade-off issue against synthetic saline oily wastewater. The work herein investigated its application performance in the continuous concentration and water recovery of real shale gas wastewater, with a commercial PVDF membrane as the reference. The modified membrane recycled 48.2% of the total volume as high-quality water and rejected 99% of feed salinity, achieving a superior concentration rate and flux recovery rate compared to PVDF. The value of the COD, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen in the permeate after the modified membrane was less than 50, 20, and 20 mg/L, meeting the local wastewater discharge standard. It was pointed out that the inorganic fouling for the MD membrane was more of a concern in dealing with a real stream, but the modified membrane exhibited excellent fouling resistance. The cost associated with the treatment was estimated at USD 2.2/m3for a production capacity of 2000 m3/d. The proposed superhydrophobic membrane has proven to be a feasible alternative from both technical and economic standpoints, offering the potential to improve MD effluent water quality and mitigate membrane fouling. Keywords:membrane distillation;shale gas wastewater;carbon nanotube;water recovery;membrane fouling

Membrane fouling is the Achilles heel of membrane-based technologies. Severe membrane fouling occurs when a single microfiltration (MF) membrane is used to treat shale gas produced water (SGPW). Activated by Fe(II), sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation combined with aluminum sulfate coagulation was used in this study to evaluate the alleviation of MF fouling for the treatment of two typical SGPW samples with different water quality characteristics from Sichuan Basin. Results showed that pre-treated by oxidation and coagulation, more than 88% of turbidity, 11%–23% of UV 254 , and 11%-36% of DOC were removed. With the increase in SPC dosage, there was a decrease in fluorescent organics, primarily reducing soluble microbial by-product-like components by up to 37.0% for sample 1 and aromatic protein and soluble microbial by-product-like components by up to 66.7% and 71.2% for sample 2, respectively. Compared to low normalized fluxes (2%-6%) for the raw SGPW, 61%-79% of normalized fluxes were obtained using the combination of 10 mmol/L SPC and 0.9 mmol/L Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·18H 2 O. There was a general evolution of complete blocking to intermediate blocking or cake layer filtration for membrane fouling mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy observation, deposited foulants on membrane surface and Fourier transform infrared analysis further confirmed the superior performance of the combination of SPC oxidation and coagulation. Correlation analysis showed that UV 254 ( R 2 = 0.79–0.95) played the most significant role in membrane fouling. Overall, this combined pretreatment process showed a great potential in MF membrane fouling control during the treatment of SGPW.

Substantial volumes of hazardous shale gas produced water (SGPW) generated in unconventional natural gas exploration. Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising approach for SGPW desalination, while membrane fouling, wetting, and permeate deterioration restrict MD application. The integration of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) with MD process was proposed to improve MD performance, and different pretreatment methods (i.e., oxidation, coagulation, and granular filtration) were systematically investigated. Results showed that pretreatment released GDM fouling and improved permeate quality by enrich certain microbes’ community (e.g., Proteobacteria and Nitrosomonadaceae ), greatly ensured the efficient desalination of MD. Pretreatment greatly influences GDM fouling layer morphology, leading to different flux performance. Thick/rough/hydrophilic fouling layer formed after coagulation, and thin/loose fouling layer formed after silica sand filtration improved GDM flux by 2.92 and 1.9 times, respectively. Moreover, the beneficial utilization of adsorption-biodegradation effects significantly enhanced GDM permeate quality. 100 % of ammonia and 53.99 % of UV 254 were efficiently removed after zeolite filtration-GDM and granular activated carbon filtration-GDM, respectively. Compared to the surged conductivity (41.29 μS/cm) and severe flux decline (>82 %) under water recovery rate of 75 % observed in single MD for SGPW treatment, GDM economically controlled permeate conductivity (1.39-19.9 μS/cm) and MD fouling (flux decline=8.3 %-27.5 %). Exploring the mechanisms, the GDM-MD process has similarity with Janus MD membrane in SGPW treatment, significantly reduced MD fouling and wetting.

The exploration of shale gas has increasingly emerged in recent years. In this work, the ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole ferric tetrachloride was firstly used as a chemical additive to improve the dissolution of shale and enhance shale gas desorption. The analyses of total organic carbon (TOC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurement were performed. The results revealed that the TOC content was reduced by 66.2% using a concentration of 0.1 mol/L 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole ferric tetrachloride with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:20 at 60 °C and a duration of 48 hr and the dissolution rate of shale was 18.95 wt%. Inorganic minerals within shale were dissolved, and irregular pores were observed, which improve the permeability of shale and the flow of shale gas. Meanwhile, the characterization of residues in the solution presented that the structures of long carbon chain, carbon-sulfur and amines, amides, or heterocyclic within kerogen may be disrupted, which is beneficial for the shale gas desorption. The isothermal adsorption results proved that the adsorption capacity of methane on the kerogen treated was decreased by 53.16%, which inferred that the desorption ability of shale gas can be improved.

The growing demand for lithium in energy storage batteries has driven interest in extracting lithium from shale gas wastewater as a sustainable alternative to traditional mining. To address challenges such as high cycling loss of adsorbent powder and complex operational procedures, this study developed adsorbent spheres by pelletizing Al-modified H 1.33 Mn 1.67 O 4 powder with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as the skeleton material, and introducing cellulose acetate (CA) or Pluronic F127 as hydrophilic modifiers. CA-modified powder exhibited superior mechanical stability, internal porosity, and hydrophilicity. These properties reduced interference from organic matter and allowed a lithium adsorption capacity of 20.2 mg/g, surpassing the 18.8 mg/g capacity of unmodified PVC particles. Adsorption behavior followed the Freundlich isotherm model, while pseudo-second-order kinetics indicated that multi-step and multi-layer chemisorption governed lithium uptake. In fixed-bed filtration experiments, the optimal empty bed contact time (EBCT) was determined to be 40 min, leading to an adsorption saturation bed volume more than 40 times the empty bed volume. Desorption enrichment provided lithium concentrations of approximately 200 mg/L. The adsorbent maintained its adsorption capacity over 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, with manganese dissolution losses below 0.3 % and in some cases as low as 0.2 %. These findings confirm the durability and efficacy of the novel composite adsorbent in lithium recovery, offering a significant step toward more efficient and sustainable lithium extraction from treated shale gas wastewater.

It is well-known that shale gas production is affected by the wettability of the reservoir. In this work, two gas-wetting alteration agents were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR. To evaluate the effect of the gas-wetting alteration agents on the shale wettability, the contact angle for droplets on the shale surface was detected, and the results showed that the contact angles of water and n-hexadecane increased from 36° and 0° to 119° and 88° after treatment with sodium [N-propyl-N-(perfluorooctanoyl)amino]acetate (SCF-102), while the contact angles increased to 122° and 110°, respectively, after treatment with sodium [N-[[N-(perfluorooctanoyl)amino]ethyl]amino]propionate (SCF-113). The surface free energy rapidly decreased from the primeval 72 to 10.3 and 6.8 mN/m at equal concentration. These values agreed with the results of spontaneous imbibition, the capillary tube rise test, and the fluid flow test. Additionally, the analysis with energy dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the fluorine-containing adsorption layer was formed and the roughness of the shale surface was significantly increased. This indicated that the gas-wetting surface can be achieved by using the gas-wetting alteration agents. The above results confirmed that the wettability of the shale surface is altered from the original water-wetting or oil-wetting to gas-wetting. Furthermore, the thermal analysis exhibited that the two gas-wetting alteration agents have good thermal stability under 165 and 216 °C, respectively. It demonstrated that they have greater potential to be applied to high-temperature reservoirs.

Adsorption and desorption processes of shale gas possess particular characteristics compared to conventional natural gas. Previous studies conducted desorption experiments on fresh core samples to investigate the isotope and chemical fractionations during the desorption process. However, complete chemical and isotope fractionations cannot be obtained due to the loss of gases during the coring process. In this study, we utilized a modified experimental apparatus based on the fixed adsorption bed to conduct systematic desorption experiments in confined systems with different proportions of free and adsorbed gases. The results show that different adsorption capacities and non-synchronous desorption for alkane gas components are leading factors influencing chemical fractionation during the desorption process. Meanwhile, C 1 /C 2 and C 1 /(C 1 +C 2 ) vary with different proportions of adsorbed gases in the same adsorption matrix. Generally, isotope fractionation between the adsorbed and free phases during desorption follows the Rayleigh fractionation model. The linear correlations between proportions of adsorbed CH 4 and isotope fractionation factors can be applied to predict the proportions of adsorbed gases. Calculations show that on average 55% of hydrocarbon gases exist at adsorbed state in shale gas from Yanchang Formation of Ordos Basin.

Lithium recovery from shale gas wastewater (SGW) is essential for the growth of a sustainable economy. However, traditional powder adsorbents suffer significant loss and poor recyclability, limiting their practical utility. Here, we fabricate an HMO/MXene/PSF adsorptive membrane, in which 2D MXene serves as the hydrogen bond interacting agent between H 1.33 Mn 1.67 O 4 (HMO) and polysulfone (PSF). Notably, MXene incorporation effectively mitigates Mn leaching due to the hydrogen bond interaction. Efficient lithium recovery from Sichuan Basin SGW is achieved, with a lithium adsorption capacity of 21.18 mg/g. After ten consecutive cycles of adsorption and desorption, the HMO/MXene/PSF membrane shows remarkable cyclic stability, with a negligible decrease in lithium adsorption capacity of merely 0.16 %. Filtration studies reveal that the membrane with a surface area of 12.56 cm 2 can effectively filter 160 mL of SGW. The stability of the membrane due to hydrogen bond interactions and the selective adsorption mechanism are further confirmed through DFT calculations. This work presents a novel concept for constructing a mixed matrix membrane for lithium extraction from SGW and is expected to inspire further efforts in developing LIS-based adsorbents for lithium recovery.

Membrane distillation (MD) offers promise for recycling shale gas produced water (SGPW), while membrane fouling is still a major obstacle in standalone MD. Herein, sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation was proposed as MD pretreatment, and the performance of the single MD, SPC-MD hybrid process and Fe(II)/SPC-MD hybrid process for SGPW treatment were systematically evaluated. Results showed that compared to raw SGPW, the application of SPC and Fe(II)/SPC led to the decrease of the fluorescent organics by 28.54 % and 54.52 %, respectively. The hydrophobic fraction decreased from 52.75 % in raw SGPW to 37.70 % and 27.20 % for SPC and Fe(II)/SPC, respectively, and the MD normalized flux increased from 0.19 in treating raw SGPW to 0.65 and 0.81, respectively. The superiority of SPC oxidation in reducing the deposited membrane foulants and restoring membrane properties was further confirmed through scanning electron microscopy observation, attenuated total reflection fourier transform infrared, water contact angle and surface tension analyses of fouled membranes. Correlation analysis revealed that hydrophobic/hydrophilic matters and fluorescent organics in SGPW took a crucial role in MD fouling. The mechanism of MD fouling mitigation by Fe(II)/SPC oxidation was attributed to the decrease in concentrations and hydrophobicity of organic by synergistic oxidation, coagulation and adsorption.

Knowledge on the composition and characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in complex shale gas wastewater (SGW) is critical to evaluate environmental risks and to determine effective management strategies. Herein, five SGW samples from four key shale gas blocks in the Sichuan Basin, China, were comprehensively characterized. Specifically, FT-ICR MS was employed to provide insights into the sources, composition, and characteristics of SGW DOM. Organic matter was characterized by low average molecular weight , high saturation degree, and low aromaticity. Notably, the absence of correlations between molecular-level parameters and spectral indexes might be attributed to the high complexity and variability of SGW. The unique distribution depicted in van Krevelen diagrams suggested various sources of DOM in SGW, such as microbially derived organics in shales and biochemical transformations. Moreover, linear alkyl benzene sulfonates , as well as associated biodegraded metabolites and coproducts, were identified in SGW, implying the distinct anthropogenic imprints and abundant microbial activities . Furthermore, high DOC removal rates (31.42–79.23 %) were achieved by biological treatment, fully supporting the inherently labile nature of SGW and the feasibility of biodegradation for SGW management . Therefore, we conclude that DOM in SGW is a complex but mostly labile mixture reflecting both autochthonous and anthropogenic sources .

Slickwater fracturing technology as a key means of the efficient shale gas development, relies on polymer molecular chains to reduce turbulent vortices and suppress radial flow fluctuations, thereby lowering fluid frictional drag and enhancing axial transport efficiency. However, conventional linear polymers fail to achieve the “shear thinning-static thickening” of the rheological response, still facing technical bottlenecks such as insufficient viscosity and poor flexibility in flow state transition during deep applications, which limits their fracturing effectiveness in deep shale gas reservoirs. Herein, we developed a tetrameric acrylamide-based polymer, polygamas (AM/AMPS/AA/SMA), via two-phase dispersion polymerization for deep shale gas development. Its hydrophobic groups form a dynamic physical crosslinking network, significantly enhancing tackifying ability. By adjusting the concentration, polyAMAS can freely switch between low-viscosity slickwater and high-viscosity gel fluid, effectively resolving the conflict between friction reduction and proppant-carrying performance. Static proppant-suspension tests showed that under high sand ratio conditions, the solution's settling rate was 0.174 mm/s, meeting the requirements of real-time mixing fracturing operations. The developed acrylamide-based emulsion, integrating friction reduction, proppant transport, and viscosity enhancement, effectively overcomes the key technical challenge of balancing high-efficiency friction reduction and stable proppant-carrying in conventional fracturing fluids, demonstrating significant potential for deep shale gas development.
