Cations preintercalation is an effective way to optimize the crystal structure and improve the electrochemical behavior. An Ag + pre-intercalated Ag x MnO 2 material with ultrafine nanowire structure is prepared by a facile hydrothermal method . With optimized crystalline microstructure including expanded interlayer space and introduced multivalence of Mn, the as-prepared material exhibits superior performance as cathode for both Li-ion and Na-ion hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs). High specific capacitance of 424.7 F g −1 in Li 2 SO 4 electrolyte and 450.1 F g −1 in Na 2 SO 4 system are achieved. The assembled HSCs using Ag x MnO 2 and activated carbon (YEC-8A) as electrode materials deliver a wide operation potential window of 0–2.2 V and a high energy density of 204.30 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 167.15 W kg −1 for Li-ion HSCs and 131.08 Wh kg −1 at 107.25 W kg −1 for Na-ion HSCs. Furthermore, the as-fabricated HSCs deliver excellent cyclic stability. The capacitance retention is 79.4% after 20,000 cycles for Li-ion HSC and 84.9% after 10,000 cycles for Na-ion HCS .

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), due to their sluggish Zn2+ diffusion kinetics, continue to face challenges in terms of achieving superior high rate, long-term cycling and low-temperature properties. Herein, K+ pre-intercalated layered V2O5 (K0.5V2O5) composites with metallic features are capable of delivering excellent zinc storage performance. Specifically, the K0.5V2O5 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 251 mA h g−1 at 5 A g−1 after 1000 cycles. Even at a low temperature of −20 °C, high reversible capacities of 241 and 115 mA h g−1 can be obtained after 1000 cycles at 1 and 5 A g−1, respectively. The outstanding electrochemical performance is attributed to the incorporation of K+ into the layered V2O5, which acts as pillars to promote the Zn2+ diffusion and increase the structural stability during cycling. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the interlayer doping of K+ can benefit electron migration, and therefore enhance the Zn2+ (de)intercalation kinetics. Meanwhile, the Zn2+ storage mechanism of K0.5V2O5 is revealed by ex situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy characterization. This work may pave the way for exploiting high-performance cathodes for aqueous ZIBs.

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) possess great advantages in terms of high safety and low cost, and are regarded as promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, limited by the electrochemical kinetics and structural stability of the typical cathode materials, it is still difficult to simultaneously achieve high rates and high cycling stability for ZIBs. Herein, we present a manganese oxide (Sn x MnO 2 /SnO 2 ) material that is dual-modified by SnO 2 /MnO 2 heterostructures and pre-intercalated Sn 4+ cations as the cathode material for ZIBs. Such modification provides sufficient hetero-interfaces and expanded interlayer spacing in the material, which greatly facilitates the insertion/extraction of Zn 2+ . Meanwhile, the “structural pillars” of Sn 4+ cations and the “pinning effect” of SnO 2 also structurally stabilizes the MnO 2 species during the repeated Zn 2+ insertion/extraction, leading to ultra-high cycling stability. Due to these merits, the Sn x MnO 2 /SnO 2 cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 316.1 mAh g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 , superior rate capability of 179.4 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 , and 92.4% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. Consequently, this work would provide a promising yet efficient strategy by combining heterostructures and cations pre-intercalation to obtain high-performance cathodes for ZIBs.

Pre-intercalation has emerged as a highly effective strategy to enhance structural integrity and ion transport kinetics in cathodes for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Here, we report a zinc-ion pre-intercalated hydrate vanadium oxide cathode, in which the initial insertion of Zn 2+ induces a significant expansion of the interplanar spacing, followed by contraction at higher Zn 2+ concentrations owing to strong electrostatic interactions with the V O framework. Such competing expansion and contraction of interplanar spacing enhances the overall electrochemical properties. In addition, the pre-intercalated Zn 2+ facilitates the in situ formation of a Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·2H 2 O cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer, which not only suppresses vanadium dissolution but also regulates the desolvation of hydrated Zn 2+ , thus further enhancing the structural integrity and interfacial kinetics. Benefiting from these merits, the Zn 2+ pre-intercalated hydrate vanadium pentoxide (denoted as 2Zn-VOH) cathode delivers a high capacity of 395 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , exhibits excellent cycling stability at both low and high current densities, and retains outstanding performance under low-temperature conditions (295 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and − 10 °C, with 83.8 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 ).

Vanadium-based oxides are considered desirable cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries owing to their high theoretical specific capacity and open crystal structure. However, the comparatively insufficient capacity and poor stability of vanadium-based oxides restrict their potential applications for the further development of aqueous zinc ion batteries. Herein, K+ and Al3+ were simultaneously pre-inserted into vanadium oxide through a facile hydrothermal process to construct a robust K0.098Al0.12V2O5·0.86H2O (denoted as KAlVOH) nano-microsphere with a large interlayer spacing of 13.26 Å. The obtained results showed that pre-embedded K+ plays a vital role in maintaining the structural stability of the layered framework upon cycling. Meanwhile, the pre-insertion of Al3+ widened the interlayer spacing, which promoted zinc transport kinetics and increased the specific capacity. Consequently, the proposed KAlVOH cathode material showed high-performance zinc ion storage with a significant specific capacity of up to 424 mA h g−1 at 0.05 A g−1. This was further accompanied by an excellent rate capability (up to 210 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1) and impressive long cycling stability (96% capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 5 A g−1). Moreover, distinctive K+/Al3+ ratios and alkali metal analogues were also investigated for this heterovalent dual-cation pre-insertion strategy. The novel design of the K+ and Al3+ co-inserted vanadium oxide cathode is envisaged as a promising alternative for the construction of robust layered vanadium-based cathodes for rapid and stable zinc ion storage.
