EMIm+, as a substitute for Li+, can solve the initial problems that accompany lithiation/delithiation processes on an anode. However, the larger size of EMIm+ limits the options when it comes to electrode materials. Herein, a multilayered Ti3C2Tx MXene was electrochemically pre-intercalated with Fe ions to achieve EMIm+ hosting abilities. As a result, a pre-intercalated MXene electrode exhibited enhanced EMIm+ transport and storage capabilities. When integrated with an EMIm+[PF6]− ionic liquid electrolyte, the assembled DIB provides an energy density of 76 W h kg−1 at a power density of 360 W kg−1, and 94.3% of the energy density is retained after 50 cycles. Compared with a pristine example, the Fe pre-intercalated Ti3C2Tx MXene showed a significant increase in electrochemical performance. Employing this approach to optimize layered materials may open up a new route for accurately tuning intercalated materials.

Inspired by a well-known architecture notion that load-bearing walls enable maintaining a highly-stable multiple-floored building, superior advantages are afforded via fabricating the NH 4 + ions pre-intercalated Mo 2 CT x MXene (Mo 2 CT x -N) in a mixed solution of NH 4 F and HCl via a simple one-step hydrothermal method. As a result of the synergistic effects of pillared structure, immobilizing -F groups and unlocking Mo-based redox, the Mo 2 CT x -N remarkably delivered a reversible capacity of 384.6 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. Our work lays a foundation for fully packaging its optimal performance via carding and architecting the chemistry of the MXene layers and between them.

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) with MnO 2 as the positive electrode have attracted extensive attention due to their high theoretical energy density. However, the dissolution of the positive electrode and the poor conductivity during the cycling process affect its development prospects. In this paper, δ-MnO 2 with larger interlayer spacing is adopted, and pre-intercalation of Ni 2+ is used to further expand its interlayer spacing to enhance the diffusion kinetics of Zn 2+ in the cathode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the charge distribution around Mn and O atoms will be changed to improve the conductivity of the MnO 2 cathode by the Ni 2+ intercalation. However, the intercalation of metal cations will lead to the production of more Mn 3+ . which will lead to further manganese dissolution. Therefore, we prepared a polyindole (PIn) coating layer with high conductivity and can effectively prevent cathode erosion by in-situ polymerization. The formation of a heterogeneous interface between PIn and MnO 2 surface not only provides more active electrochemical sites, but also enhances the conductivity of the cathode and reduces the occurrence of manganese dissolution, which greatly improves the cycle performance and specific capacity of the cathode. Ni-MnO 2 @PIn delivers a discharge capacity of 385 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , and maintains a capacity of 278 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.3 A g −1 , with a capacity retention of 95 %.

MnO 2 -based material is one of the most promising cathode candidates of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), but its commercialization is hindered by the sluggish reaction kinetics and poor structural stability. Herein, a hierarchical framework consisting of core–shell structured carbon nanotubes@K-birnessite-MnO 2 enwrapped by graphene/carbon black bicomponent networks (CNT@KMO@GC) via a simple method for ZIBs is designed and developed. The hierarchical framework characterized with favorable K + preintercalation, δ-phase, and vertically aligned nanoflake arrays of KMO and 3D electrically conductive network shows the enhanced electronic/ionic conductivity and improved wettability with electrolyte, resulting in the fast charge/mass transport and stable structural stability of CNT@KMO@GC. When used as cathode in ZIBs, CNT@KMO@GC exhibits exciting electrochemical performance with remarkable capacity (405.5 mAh g −1 at 0.30 A g −1 ), high rate performance (166.6 mAh g −1 up to 10.0 A g −1 ), and impressive cycling stability (almost no capacity decay after 2000 cycles and 77.3% retention after 10 000 cycles at 10.0 A g −1 ). The energy storage mechanism of CNT@KMO@GC is clarified as H + /Zn 2+ coinsertion/extraction via electrochemical analysis and ex situ characterization. This study offers an innovative paradigm for the advance of ZIBs.

Multi-electron reaction as the appealing alternative can offer higher specific capacity, however, it delivers a tendency to collapse the structure causing cycling instability. Herein, K + pre-intercalation strategy is applied to modify VS 4 /N-TG as cathode for MIBs . As opposed to the structural breakdown caused by multi-electron reaction, pre-intercalated K + not only modulate electronic state, making V 2+ present as instead of partial V 4+ achieving multi-electron reaction, but also act as pillar ions for coordinating the interaction of guest-ions with adjacent host ions to strengthen the framework to maintain structural stability, therefore, K 0.20 VS 4 /N-TG delivers high specific capacity of 190 mAh g –1 , and excellent cycling stability with about near 100% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. This finding gives insights into enabling multi-electron transfer reaction while achieving high structural stability via K + pre-intercalation, shed light on designing viable multi-electron reaction in intercalation type cathode without destroying stable structure for high performance magnesium ions batteries.

The traditional metal ions (K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , etc.) pre-intercalated strategy is widely used to optimize the structure of vanadium oxides as the cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). However, these intercalated ions with a single valence state between the layers of vanadium oxides occupy the original active sites and merely act as ‘pillars’ without redox reactions for energy storage. Herein, we employ the optimized pre-intercalation strategy to fabricate a series of Mo pre-intercalated hydrated vanadium oxide materials ( x -MoVOH) as the cathode of AZIBs. The intercalated functional Mo ions can not only effectively enlarge the interlayer spacing to expose more active sites for insertion and de-insertion of hydrated Zn 2+ , but also provide additional electrochemical performance through the redox reactions of Mo 4+ /Mo 5+ /Mo 6+ . The finest material (Mo 3 V 15 O 35 ·nH 2 O, 5-MoVOH) exhibits the electrochemical performance of the specific capacity of 430 mAh·g −1 at 100 mA·g −1 and the capacity retention proportion of 95 % after 1000 cycles at 2 A·g −1 . Additionally, the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) further confirms that the enlarged layer spacing facilitates the rapid diffusion of hydrated Zn 2+ . This work provides a novel and feasible way to further enhance the performance of vanadium oxides in AZIBs.

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as a promising candidate in the field of large-scale power grids and power storage, owing to their abundant reserves and low price. As a promising intercalated SIBs electrode, vanadium-based compounds have multiple oxidation states, rich coordination polyhedron structure and open lattice frameworks. But those materials are prone to occur the irreversible electrochemical reactions and produce metastable structural materials in the process of electrochemical reaction, resulting in a rapid decrease in capacity. Herein, a novel bilayer-structured vanadium oxide (CaV 8 O 20 ·3H 2 O)/Carbon composite material with high specific capacity and long cycling life was synthesized. The CaV 8 O 20 ·3H 2 O in this research has overcome the shortcomings of most vanadium-based electrode materials. In the ex-situ mechanism of this study, it was proved that the insertion of calcium ions can effectively maintain the stability of the interplanar spacing of the material and carry out sufficient redox reactions. Combined with the results of electrochemical performance comparison and mechanism analysis, a uniform carbon coating can improve the electrochemical stability and specific capacity of CaV 8 O 20 ·3H 2 O by increasing the conductivity of the material and inhibiting adverse side effects. The reported V-based carbon composite anode material exhibited a remarkable electrochemical property with a capacity of 0.2 A g −1 and the capacity retention rate was 92.7% after 200 cycles, and the capacity retention rate was 72% after 450 cycles at a current density of 5.0 A g −1 . The novel pre-intercalation model may provide a new perspective for the development of vanadium-based materials in SIBs.

In this work, five vanadium oxide materials with a series of pre-intercalated cations A (AmV2O5), including Zn2+, Mg2+, NH4+, Li+, and Ag+, have been successfully prepared by a two-step method. All of them possess binary monoclinic and orthorhombic V2O5 phases with an open layered structure that allows the ionic storage and diffusion of hydrated cations. The interlayer space for the monoclinic V2O5 phase is strongly dependent on the radii of hydrated cations A, while the one for the orthorhombic V2O5 phase remains the same regardless of the radii of cations A. Among them, AmV2O5 with pre-intercalated Zn2+ (ZVO) has the best storage ability of Zn2+ with a reversible capacity close to 400 mAh g–1, and AmV2O5 with pre-intercalated Ag+ shows the highest rate capacity with a nearly 40% capacity retention at a current of 20 A g–1 (≈25 C). Kinetic studies have clearly shown that pseudocapacitive behavior dominates the electrochemical reaction on ZVO. During the Zn2+ (de)intercalation reaction, a highly reversible transformation of binary monoclinic or orthorhombic V2O5 phases into a single triclinic ZnxV2O5·nH2O phase is demonstrated on ZVO. Vanadium atoms are identified as the redox centers that undergo the mutual transition among the chemical states of V3+, V4+, and V5+. They together with oxygen atoms constitute reasonable V–O coordination polyhedra to generate a layered structure with a suitable interlayer space for the insertion or removal of zinc ions. Actually, the intrinsic coordination chemistry changes between VO5 square pyramids and VO6 octahedra account for the phase transformation during the Zn2+-(de)intercalation reaction.

Layered vanadium oxides with preintercalated cations have been recognized to be among the most promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). However, their underlying structure–property relationships are still poorly understood owing to the lack of systematic comparison. Herein, a series of layered V2O5 nanobelts including single-layer α-V2O5 and bilayer hydrated δ-V2O5 with preintercalation (MxV2O5·nH2O, M = Mg2+, Ca2+, or Ba2+) with similar morphology are fabricated through a controllable synthesis protocol as models. The side-by-side comparisons of the energy storage performances and related kinetics in these samples decouple the reconstruction effects of nanostructuring and preintercalation. Results demonstrate that nanostructuring tends to improve the capacity and rate retention of α-V2O5 but leaves the rapid capacity decay unsettled, whereas preintercalation can convert α-V2O5 into δ-V2O5 with simultaneously enhanced discharge capacity, rate retention, and cycling stability. Regulation of the cations’ species/content and their associated structural water appears to accelerate the electron/ion transport in V2O5 and stabilize the framework of V2O5, thereby boosting the energy storage properties. The optimized sample with a stoichiometric formula of Mg0.255V2O5·0.809H2O exhibits outstanding comprehensive energy storage performance that is comparable to the most advanced vanadium oxide hydrate cathodes reported in the literature. The quantification and understanding of the reconstruction effects of nanostructuring and preintercalation in this work offer insights into the structural engineering of advanced cathodes for AZIBs and beyond.

Metal oxide have attracted much attention as a pseudocapacitive electrode for high energy density supercapacitors (SCs). However, the battery-like charge storage mechanism based on ions diffusion and valence change for metal oxide would lead to a poor cycling stability and unsatisfied rate performance. Herein, cobalt ions pre-intercalation MnO 2 nanosheet arrays on Ni foam (Co-MnO 2 /NF) was prepared as the cathode for SCs. The capacitive behavior of MnO 2 was enhanced via cobalt introduction. The optimized Co-MnO 2 /NF-2 demonstrated improved pseudocapacitance and stability, with a specific capacitance of 405.6 mF cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 . It retained 90.5 % of its initial capacitance at 10 mA cm −2 after 5000 cycles, which was superior to that of pristine MnO 2 (222.4 mF cm −2 , 65.0 % after 1000 cycles), Co-MnO 2 /NF-1 (295.2 mF cm −2 , 85.9 % after 1000 cycles), and Co-MnO 2 /NF-3 (349.9 mF cm −2 , 84.9 % after 1000 cycles). The asymmetric aqueous supercapacitor consisted of Co-MnO 2 /NF-2 and N-doped porous carbon fiber (NPCF) electrodes with an operating potential of 2.0 V reaches a high areal energy density of 0.06 mWh cm −2 at a power density of 0.5 mWh cm −2 .

Engineering the chemical composition of organic and inorganic hybrid perovskite materials is one of the most feasible methods to boost the efficiency of perovskite solar cells with improved device stability. Among the diverse hybrid perovskite family of ABX 3 , formamidinium (FA)-based mixed perovskite (e.g., FA 1− x Cs x PbI 3 ) possesses optimum bandgaps, superior optoelectronic property, as well as thermal- and photostability, which is proven to be the most promising candidate for advanced solar cell. Here, FA 0.9 Cs 0.1 PbI 3 (Cl) is implemented as the light-harvesting layer in planar devices, whereas a low temperature, two-step solution deposition method is employed for the first time in this materials system. This paper comprehensively exploits the role of Cs + in the FA 0.9 Cs 0.1 PbI 3 (Cl) perovskite that affects the precursor chemistry, film nucleation and grain growth, and defect property via pre-intercalation of CsI in the inorganic framework. In addition, the resultant FA 0.9 Cs 0.1 PbI 3 (Cl) films are demonstrated to exhibit an improved optoelectronic property with an elevated device power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.6%, as well as a stable phase with substantial enhancement in humidity and thermal stability, as compared to that of FAPbI 3 (Cl). The present method is able to be further extended to a more complicated (FA,MA,Cs)PbX 3 material system by delivering a PCE of 19.8%.

Electrochemical energy storage devices are ubiquitous for personal electronics, electric vehicles, smart grids, and future clean energy demand. SCs are EES devices with excellent power density and superior cycling ability. Herein, we focused on the fabrication and DFT calculations of Na3-δ-MnO2nanocomposite, which has layered MnO2redox-active sites, supported on carbon cloth. MnO2has two-dimensional diffusion channels and is not labile to structural changes during intercalation; therefore, it is considered the best substrate for intercalation. Cation pre-intercalation has proven to be an effective way of increasing inter-layered spacing, optimizing the crystal structure, and improving the relevant electrochemical behavior of asymmetric aqueous supercapacitors. We successfully established Na+pre-intercalated δ-MnO2nanosheets on carbon cloth via one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. As a cathode, our prepared material exhibited an extended potential window of 0–1.4 V with a remarkable specific capacitance of 546 F g−1(300 F g−1at 50 A g−1). Moreover, when this cathode was accompanied by an N-AC anode in an asymmetric aqueous supercapacitor, it illustrated exceptional performance (64 Wh kg−1at a power density of 1225 W kg−1) and incomparable potential window of 2.4 V and 83% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles with a great Columbic efficiency. Keywords:manganese oxide;pre-intercalation;specific capacitance;wide potential window;asymmetric aqueous supercapacitor;DFT calculation
