This study presents a novel pre-magnetized Fe 0 /ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid/air (pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air) Fenton-like system to remove sulfamethazine (SMT). SMT removal only reached 10.6% in pre-Fe 0 /air system (0.2 g L −1 , SMT 3 mg L −1 , pH 5) while reached 88.5% in pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air system within 1 h (0.2 g L −1 , SMT 3 mg L −1 , EDTA 2 mM, pH 5). EDTA could combine with Fe II or Fe III to keep iron soluble in the solution and the fast activation of molecular oxygen by Fe-EDTA complex could induce the fast and more production of H 2 O 2 . It was found that much more H 2 O 2 (5.1 mg L −1 ) and OH radical (26.4 μM) were produced in the pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air system than in the pre-Fe 0 /air system (0.06 mg L −1 , 0.6 μM) within 1 h. The degradation rate of SMT (1 0 3 ) in pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air system (38.4 min −1 ) was also 2.3 times as large as that in the Fe 0 /EDTA/air system (17.0 min −1 ), owing to the fast corrosion rate of pre-Fe 0 . 81.5 mgL −1 total Fe ions could be generated in pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air while 53.6 mg L −1 in Fe 0 /EDTA/air. Fe 0 dosage (0.05–0.8 g L −1 ) and EDTA dosage (0–8 mM) were optimized and the optimal dosage for Fe 0 and EDTA was 0.2 g L −1 and 2 mM, respectively. The degradation rate of SMT in pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air system were 1.6–2.9 times at different initial pH (3–6) and 2.3–3.1 times in the presence of inorganic ions (SO 4 2− , Cl − and HCO 3 − ) and natural organic matter (NOM) compared with Fe 0 /EDTA/air system. Decrease of Fe 0 contact angle in the presence of magnetization and EDTA enhanced the corrosion rate of Fe 0 . Accordingly, pre-Fe 0 /EDTA/air system would be a cost-effective and promising eco-friendly alternative for removal of SMT.

Current heavy-metal wastewater treatment methods face significant limitations, creating a need for new technologies. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) shows potential, but the core-shell structure of ZVI is an obstacle due to the low electrical conductivity ( σ ) of its shell, limiting electron transfer from the core to the surface for metal removal reactions. In this study, we enhance the shell’s σ in a pre-magnetized decimeter-sized ZVI plate (MMDZVIP) through reinforced negative magnetoresistance (NMR) effect. Magnetoresistance measurements reveal that MMDZVIP exhibits an NMR effect. MMDZVIP shows a magnetoresistance ratio ( MR ) of -123%, an σ 1.95 times and removal efficiencies 1.91 to 5.18 times that of unmagnetized plates when magnetized to 449 mT. Heavy-metal removal experiments showed nearly 100% removal efficiency at 354 mT, with performance retention above 99.7% after 9 cycles, demonstrating high durability. The mechanism behind the results is as follows: During the removal process, the migration of releasing electrons is aligned to form a current along the normal direction of the MMDZVIP plate. This current is primarily driven by electron consumption on the plate’s surface, where the removal reaction occurs. With pre-magnetization, NMR and Hall effects acted on the releasing electron current and synergistically and significantly enhance the shell's σ . Our work introduces a novel method for enhancing NMR in materials, advancing heavy-metal treatment technologies beyond current limitations.

The abatement of chlorophenols is of great environmental importance. Though Fe 0 can activate persulfate (PS) to improve performance, our findings proved that pre-magnetized Fe 0 (Pre-Fe 0 ) could significantly enhanced the degradation and dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), and this Pre-Fe 0 /PS process was more efficient than Fe(II)/PS. The Fe 0 before and after magnetization was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), suggesting the acceleration of Fe 2+ release after magnetization. The effects of some important operating parameters such as Fe 0 dosage, PS dosage, pH, and initial 2,4-DCP concentration on the 2,4-DCP degradation and dechlorination by Pre-Fe 0 /PS were investigated and compared with that of Fe 0 /PS, observing a 1.9–5.2-fold enhancement in the degradation rate of 2,4-DCP. Although SO 4 − was the dominant active species responsible for 2,4-DCP degradation in two processes, pre-magnetization could promote more OH generation. Identified by GC–MS and IC, the degradation intermediates such as 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), phenol, and some carboxylic acids were detected, and possible degradation pathway was proposed. This Pre-Fe 0 /PS process was also efficient for 4-chlorophenol and chlorobenzene degradation, obtaining a 5.2 and 3.2 folds enhancement, respectively. This work demonstrated that such a Pre-Fe 0 /PS would be very promising and environmental-friendly for organics degradation and dechlorination since pre-magnetization required no extra energy source while the introduction of Pre-Fe 0 was rather simple and no need to change the present treatment system.

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is one of the most applicable herbicides in the world, its residue in aquatic environment threatens the human health and ecosystems. In this study, for the first time, inexpensive Fe-C after pre-magnetization (Pre-Fe-C) was used as the heterogeneous catalyst to activate persulfate (PS) for 2,4-D degradation, proving that Pre-Fe-C could significantly improve the degradation and dechlorination. The results indicated the stability and reusability of Pre-Fe-C were much better than pre-magnetization Fe 0 (Pre-Fe 0 ), while the leaching iron ion was lower, indicating that using Pre-Fe-C not only reduced the post-treatment cost, but also enhanced the removal and dechlorination efficiency of 2,4-D. Several important parameters including initial pH, Fe-C dosage, PS concentration affecting 2,4-D degradation and dechlorination by Pre-Fe-C/PS were investigated and compared with that of Fe-C/PS, observing a 1.2–2.7 fold enhancement in the degradation rate of 2,4-D. The Fe-C and Pre-Fe-C were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and SEM-EDX-mapping, suggesting that the content of Fe and O changed more obviously after magnetization. The degradation intermediates, such as chloroquinol, 2-chlorophenol, were identified by a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and an ion chromatography (IC), and a possible degradation pathway was proposed.

Pre-magnetized Fe 0 /persulfate (pre-Fe 0 /PS) process was innovatively employed for controlling the pollution of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA). This process showed favorable removal performance, achieving almost complete elimination of 10 mg/L p -ASA within 30 min at the reaction conditions of 0.2 g/L pre-Fe 0 and 1 mM PS. The increase of PS concentration and pre-Fe 0 dosage was conducive to the degradation. The coexistence of Cl − , NO 3 − and SO 4 2− accelerated the removal, however the presence of HCO 3 − and HA presented the opposite trend. The p -ASA degradation decelerated gradually with increasing pH from 5 to 9. Its removal was caused by the attack of reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO 4 − , OH, O 2 − ), which could be continuously formed via the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle in solution and on pre-Fe 0 surface. In pre-Fe 0 /PS system, SO 4 − in solution, surface-bound SO 4 − , OH, OH in solution, O 2 − in solution and Fe(IV) contributed to the p -ASA degradation. A plausible transformation route related to the break of C-N and As-C bonds, the substitution of OH group was put forward. More importantly, the released inorganic arsenic during p -ASA decomposition could be effectively controlled through multiple functions including the precipitation, co-precipitation and sorption, which was well confirmed by XPS, FTIR and XRD analysis. Pre-Fe 0 /PS and Fe 0 /PS pretreatments both reduced the generation of C-DBPs except for chloral hydrate, while increased the formation of N-DBPs except for trichloroacetamide.

The dewaterability of waste-activated sludge (WAS) has been extensively examined using zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, the high dosage and low utilization efficiencies of ZVI cast doubt on the dependability and viability of ZVI-based AOPs. In this study, we successfully demonstrated pre-magnetization as an efficient, chemical-free, and ecological method for improving the efficiency of sludge dewatering by ZVI/persulfate (PS) process, in which the reduction ratios of capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) increased by 8.67% and 11.06% under optimal conditions, respectively. The highly active Fe 2+ released during ZVI corrosion may be more essential than ZVI itself during PS activation, which could be strengthened by pre-magnetization. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous Fe 2+ could react with PS to produce aqueous hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ∙) as well as surface-bound ∙OH and SO 4 − ∙, further decomposing bound-extracellular polymeric substances fractions, broking hydrophilic functional groups and compounds, altering protein secondary structure to expose more hydrophobic sites, and releasing abundant EPS-bound water. Due to the protection of tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) and the competitive oxidation of organics released during the early disintegration stage, radical oxidation primarily occurs at extracellular levels, releasing a bit of intracellular water. Besides, polysaccharides in TB-EPS may function a more significant role in flocculation than proteins, and a porous structure favorable to drainage will be formed after the pre-magnetized ZVI/PS treatment. The cost-benefit analysis further reveals that the Pre-ZVI/PS process presents high reusability and utilization, making it potential for particle application in sludge dewatering.

An efficient heterogeneous catalyst, pre-magnetized Fe 0 (pre-Fe 0 ) could significantly activate persulfate (PS) to remove Rhodamine B (RhB). The effect of pH, Fe 0 and PS dose on the RhB removal in the pre-Fe 0 /PS and Fe 0 /PS processes were investigated, and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) to analyze the rate constants of the RhB removal in the pre-Fe 0 /PS process and Fe 0 /PS process ( f ). High RhB removal was obtained at low pH and high dose of Fe 0 and PS in both systems. Low Fe 0 and high PS dose and large pH would result in big value of f , and the simulated maximum f of 44.3 was achieved at 2 mM Fe 0 , 16 mM PS and pH 9. The synergetic factor of pre-Fe 0 /PS (45.6) was larger than that of Fe 0 /PS (21.4). The pre-Fe 0 /PS process presented 2.1–37.5 folds enhancement than the Fe 0 /PS process for the degradation of RhB. The RhB removal in the pre-Fe 0 /PS process was 1.5–11.2 folds enhancement than that of the Fe 0 /PS process in the presence of different anions and cations. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) results and the larger intensity of DMPO-SO 4 − adduct signal in the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) confirmed the primary role of sulfate radicals generated from the reaction of PS with Fe 0 in the contaminant degradation. The pre-Fe 0 /PS process exhibited advantages over other processes to remove RhB in terms of contaminant removal, working pH range and chemical dose. Therefore, the pre-Fe 0 /PS process is a cost-effective approach for degrading RhB.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has great potential for wastewater treatment, but still limited in application due to their high cost for extensive reagent and energy demand, and restricted working conditions (e.g. narrow pH range). Here, AOPs based on pre-magnetization Fe 0 (Pre-Fe 0 ) were found to be highly efficient at wider pH conditions, partly solved the above problems. After pre-magnetization, Fe 0 was supposed to be easier to be corroded, which remarkably improved processes (e.g., Pre-Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 , Pre-Fe 0 /K 2 S 2 O 8 ) efficiency several to >100 folds and valid for many refractory contaminants (e.g. dyes, phenols, organic acids), compared with that conventional processes without pre-magnetization. Moreover, the process efficiency could be sustained by the recovery of magnetism of Pre-Fe 0 . Thus AOPs based on pre-Fe 0 is more promising to take place of conventional Fe 0 based AOPs since it is more efficient but does not require any change of the present water and wastewater treatment process, and does not need an extra energy source, costly materials, and complex equipment.

Diclofenac sodium (DCF) is frequently detected as a non-steroidal pharmaceutical in the aquatic environment. In this study, the degradation of DCF in two heterogeneous systems, pre-magnetization Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 (Pre-Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 ) and Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 system, was comparably studied. Our findings proved that Pre-Fe 0 could significantly improve the degradation and dechlorination of DCF due to the change of Fe 0 characteristics after pre-magnetization. Compared with Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process, Pre-Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process has 2.1–7.0 times higher rate constant for DCF degradation at different H 2 O 2 dosages (0.25–2.0 mM), initial pH (3.0–6.0) and Fe 0 dosages (0.25–1.5 mM). The characterizations by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance confirmed that the enhancement attributed to the increase of Fe 0 corrosion and fast generation of OH . In addition, preliminary degradation mechanism was elucidated by major products identification using UPLC-MS, through which the degradation intermediates, such as 4-hydroxy-diclofenac or 5-hydroxydiclofenac, 2,6-dichloroaniline, phenylacetic acid, 1,3-dichlorobenzene and 2-aminophenylacetic acid were identified. Hydroxylation, decarboxylation , C N bond cleavage and ring-opening involving the attack of OH or other substances, were the main degradation mechanism. Therefore, Pre-Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process, which does not need extra energy and costly reagents, is an efficient and environmental-friendly process to degrade DCF.

A new modified Fenton-like process (pre-magnetization Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 ) was employed to enhance the degradation of organic pollutants and reduce reagents dosage, using azo dye of tartrazine as the model. Compared with Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process, pre-magnetization Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process could have 1.3–11.2 folds enhancement in the degradation rate of tartrazine at different Fe 0 dosages (0.5–4 mmol), initial pH levels (2–6.5) and H 2 O 2 dosages (0.25–2 mmol) owing to the change of Fe 0 characteristics after pre-magnetization. The contact angle of pre-magnetization Fe 0 decreased from 58.4° to 19.8° enhancing the hydrophilicity and BET increased from 0.15 m 2 /g to 1.94 m 2 /g, which improved the corrosion of Fe 0 and accelerated the generation of Fe 2+ . Similar to the case of tartrazine, pre-magnetization Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process had remarkable improvement on many refractory contaminants. The degradation rate constant of methyl orange, orange, methylene blue, 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), acetylsalicylic acid, phenol and tetracycline by pre-magnetization Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process was 5.2, 21.3, 9.2, 5.6, 12.3, 9.5 and 3 folds of that by Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process, respectively. The “magnetic memory” of pre-magnetization Fe 0 could last 24 h which was suitable for off-site application, and the lost some or all “magnetic memory” could be recovered after second pre-magnetization. Pre-magnetization Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 is a more promising and highly efficient Fenton process since it does not require any change of the present water and wastewater treatment process , and does not need an extra energy source and complex equipment but can widen pH range and save more than 75% Fe 0 and H 2 O 2 dosages.

Pre-magnetization can boost the activity of zero-valent iron (ZVI), facilitating the removal of contaminants by pre-magnetized ZVI (Pre-ZVI) activated peroxides. However, Pre-ZVI’s persistence and stability in the activation of peroxides are little known. In this work, we investigated the ability of dry and wet Pre-ZVI activated peroxymonosulfate (Pre-ZVI/PMS) to enhance the removal of ofloxacin (OFX), the influence of environmental parameters as well as the evaluation of the long-term performance of Pre-ZVI/PMS. The results showed that the dry Pre-ZVI/PMS system had better removal performance in the wide pH range (4–9), with OFX removal efficiencies of over 90 % and high PMS utilization within 120 min. The presence of different environmental factors significantly affected the degradation process. Remarkably, the ability of dry and wet Pre-ZVI to activate PMS decreased over time, with all systems experiencing a decrease of reaction rate constant ( k ) of approximately 20–47 % from day 1 to day 30. The catalytic efficacy could be considerably recovered by re-magnetization, but it dropped again with time. The vulnerable sites and degradation mechanism of OFX were determined by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analysis and density functional theory calculation, and the toxicities of the transformation products in the system were predicted. This work is a guide for clarifying the long-term viability of the Pre-ZVI-activated peroxides used in environmental remediation.

Highly efficient persulfate oxidation process activated with pre-magnetization Fe 0 (pre-magnetization Fe 0 /PS) was employed to degrade Orange anthraquinone dye at different Fe 0 dosages (1–8 mmol/L), initial pH levels (3–10) and PS dosages (2–8 mmol/L). Pre-magnetization Fe 0 /PS possessed 8.4–119.6 folds enhancement in degradation rate and could widen pH range and save 90% Fe 0 and PS dosage when compared with conventional Fe 0 /PS process. And this effect was ascribed to the change of Fe 0 characteristics after pre-magnetization. This significant improvement was also observed on the degradation of many refractory contaminants of tartrazine, phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), p -chlorophenol, chlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, p -nitrophenol and p -nitrchlorobenzene, which were 2.8–11.4 folds of those by Fe 0 /PS process. Pre-magnetization Fe 0 /PS is a more promising process since it does not require any change of the present water and wastewater treatment process, and does not need an extra energy source, costly materials, and complex equipment.
