Electrochemical presodiation promoting lithium storage performance of Mo-based anode materials

Huiyong Li,Ping Liu,Nan Zhou,Xiaobing Huang,Haiyan Wang

Stabilizing the layer structures of Mo-based anode materials is still a challenge for Li ion batteries . Herein, we proposed an electrochemical presodiation strategy for MoS 2 and MoO 3 to improve their cycling stability. It is interesting to note that the cycling stability of as-treated MoS 2 and MoO 3 was significantly improved. Although the reversible discharge capacity was slightly decreased, the capacity of the pretreated MoS 2 at 300   mA   g −1 was retained at 345   mA   h   g −1 after 100 cycles while that of the pristine one decreased to 151   mA   h   g −1 . The capacity of the pretreated MoO 3 after 60 cycles was also improved from 275   mA   h   g −1 (the pristine one) to 460   mA   h   g −1 . The stabilizing effect was further verified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. Electrochemical presodiation here could be a promising modification strategy for Mo-based anode materials.

NaF-rich interphase and high initial coulombic efficiency of red phosphorus anode for sodium-ion batteries by chemical presodiation

Jiangping Song,Mengjun Wu,Kan Fang,Tian Tian,Rui Wang,Haolin Tang

Red phosphorus/carbon (P/C) materials have been extensively studied as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high capacities and moderate working potentials. However, the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) of P/C composites limit their widespread applications. In this study, we develop an effective presodiation method to compensate for the irreversible sodium loss of the S-doped P/C (P/C@S) anode and yield a thin, uniform, and NaF-rich SEI layer on the presodiated P/C@S (pNa-P/C@S) anode during cycling. Consequently, the pNa-P/C@S anode exhibits a remarkable ICE of 98.7% as well as superior cycling performance and rate capability in the half cell. When pNa-P/C@S anode is coupled with conventional Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 , Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , and NaCu 0.12 Ni 0.23 Fe 0.33 Mn 0.33 cathodes, all the full cells demonstrate desirable ICEs (>98%), high energy densities, and excellent cycling performance. The proposed method has been extended to another anode (SnO 2 ) to demonstrate its applicability in fabricating anodes with a high ICE and stable NaF-rich SEI layer.

Constructing a high ion conductivity artificial SEI on biomass derived hard carbon for sodium ion battery

Yan Ji,Zhiqing Ge,Huali Zhu,Junfei Duan,Yanxia Wang,Yanling Gu,Zhaoyong Chen

Constructing an artificial SEI on a hard carbon surface effectively enhances initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cycling stability. A polymer electrolyte binder containing sodium ions (SPEB), consisting of PAAS and PEO , is designed using a straightforward method. A high ion conductivity artificial SEI is constructed on a pomelo peel-derived hard carbon (PHC) surface through esterification and hydrogen bonding . In hard carbon anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), SPEB plays a crucial role by facilitating pre-sodiation in PHC, enhancing ion conductivity, and guiding the construction of a NaF-rich, ultra-thin, and stable SEI. The synthesized PHC possesses an outstanding reversible specific capacity of 375.13 mAh·g −1 , a superior ICE of 90.94 %, good rate capability, and excellent cycle stability. After 400 cycles at 0.9 A·g −1 , it retains 152.52 mAh·g −1 with almost no decay. Meanwhile, SPEB demonstrates an exciting performance in other hard carbons and helps its commercialization application in SIBs.

Electrochemically prelithiated carbon anodes with regulated Na-ion intercalation behaviours for advanced sodium-ioni energy storage devices

Qingyuan Liu,Jianchao Chen,Danni Du,Shuxian Zhang,Chunyan Zhu,Zhiwei Zhang,Chengxiang Wang,Longwei Yin,Rutao Wang

Sodium-ion capacitors (SICs) have long been pursued as economically favorable alternatives to their well-developed lithium-ion counterparts. However, their commercialization suffers from the immature pre-sodiation technology in existence, primarily due to the increased cost and risk invoked by the use of highly reactive metallic sodium and sodium containing additives as sodium sources. Herein, we uncover a unique approach based on the use of prelithiated carbon as the anode for SICs. The prelithiated hard carbon anode with the preformed solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) layer can effectively compensate the large irreversible capacity loss and greatly improve the initial coulombic efficiency of SICs. Besides, the preformed Li-based SEI layer is effective in controlling the Na-ion intercalation behavior of the carbon anode, as confirmed by the reversible capacity that is mainly contributed by the extended slope region without the low-potential plateau region, thus avoiding the safety issues from Na metal plating. These features endowed by the pre-lithiation strategy enable us to use a slope region-dominated soft carbon anode for high-safety SICs with high capacity and superior rate capability. This work possesses far-reaching potential to implant the mature pre-lithiation technology into sodium-ion energy storage systems to resolve the scientific bottleneck from the immature pre-sodiation technology.

Bridging multiscale interfaces for developing ionically conductive high-voltage iron sulfate-containing sodium-based battery positive electrodes

Zhang Jiyu,Yan Yongliang,Wang Xin,Cui Yanyan,Zhang Zhengfeng,Wang Sen,Xie Zhengkun,Yan Pengfei,Chen Weihua

Non-aqueous sodium-ion batteries (SiBs) are a viable electrochemical energy storage system for grid storage. However, the practical development of SiBs is hindered mainly by the sluggish kinetics and interfacial instability of positive-electrode active materials, such as polyanion-type iron-based sulfates, at high voltage. Here, to circumvent these issues, we proposed the multiscale interface engineering of Na 2.26 Fe 1.87 (SO 4 ) 3 , where bulk heterostructure and exposed crystal plane were tuned to improve the Na-ion storage performance. Physicochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations suggested that the heterostructure of Na 6 Fe(SO 4 ) 4 phase facilitated ionic kinetics by densifying Na-ion migration channels and lowering energy barriers. The (11-2) plane of Na 2.26 Fe 1.87 (SO 4 ) 3 promoted the adsorption of the electrolyte solution ClO 4 − anions and fluoroethylene carbonate molecules, which formed an inorganic-rich Na-ion conductive interphase at the positive electrode. When tested in combination with a presodiated FeS/carbon-based negative electrode in laboratory- scale single-layer pouch cell configuration, the Na 2.26 Fe 1.87 (SO 4 ) 3 -based positive electrode enables an initial discharge capacity of about 83.9 mAh g −1 , an average cell discharge voltage of 2.35 V and a specific capacity retention of around 97% after 40 cycles at 24 mA g −1 and 25 °C.
