We introduce a model colloid system comprised of carbonyl iron particles dispersed in oil organogel. The rheological properties of magnetorheological fluids with different particle concentrations were investigated. It was found that the system showed behavior expected from a structured material due to the network of the matrix. The microstructural changes investigated in hysteresis and thixotropic tests demonstrated a compacted chain structure can be obtained by proper shearing. The field-induced shear stress and dynamic modulus proved a promising magnetorheological performance of the suspension.

The coffee-ring effect commonly occurs during the evaporation and deposition of particle-laden droplets on the substrates. The resulting deposition pattern is influenced by internal flows, which depend on substrate properties, droplet chemistry, and external conditions. However, in applications such as inkjet printing, drug formulation, and self-assembly, avoiding coffee ring formation is crucial. This study presents a method to suppress the coffee-ring effect using focused laser irradiation on droplet surfaces. By irradiating droplets containing silica microparticles with a green laser and adjusting the particle concentration, we controlled the deposition patterns. Uniform patterns formed at particle concentrations below 0.02%, while gradient patterns appeared above 0.08%. A dimensionless parameter, G, was introduced to quantify particle deposition patterns. Uniform deposition structures are established when Gmax > 10, whereas gradient structures are formed when Gmax < 2. This approach offers new insights into the laser-induced control of microparticle deposition patterns.

This study is dedicated to fabricating rice bran protein particles (RBPPs) through a thermal-acid modification strategy and exploring their potential as Pickering emulsifiers. The results confirmed that compared with rice bran protein (RBP), RBPPs exhibited enhanced hydrophobicity, reduced interfacial tension, and favorable wettability (83.4 ± 5.2°). Subsequently, Pickering emulsions were constructed using RBPPs as emulsifiers, and the effects of RBPPs concentration and oil phase fraction on the structure and performance of the emulsions were investigated. The results indicated that increasing the RBPPs concentration or oil phase fraction could enhance the stability and viscoelasticity of Pickering emulsions. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and interfacial protein content results demonstrated that at 4.0 wt% RBPPs concentration or 75 % oil phase fraction, the emulsions exhibited the highest interfacial protein content and formed a tight interfacial film, thereby endowing it with excellent storage stability, centrifugal stability, and the ability to protect lipids. Additionally, adjusting the pH value could effectively regulate the structure and performance of the emulsions. This research is of great significance for the development of new Pickering emulsifiers and the preparation of Pickering emulsions with adjustable structure and performance.

This study investigated the mechanisms and performance of SiO2 nanofluid for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in low-permeability cores. Three-phase contact angles for quartz/oil/brine systems were measured, and the microscopic imbibition characteristics of nanofluids in a capillary were observed through visualization experiments. In addition, the effects of the adsorption of the nanoparticles on the oil–water relative permeability was studied using core displacement tests. Furthermore, a total of 11 core flooding tests were performed, and the effects of injection parameters, such as nanoparticle concentration, injection rate, and injection scheme, on the oil recovery were investigated. Wettability alterations were observed among quartz/oil/brine systems that contributed to higher displacement efficiencies in microscopic imbibition tests. Relative permeability measurements showed that, upon the adsorption of the nanoparticles, the irreducible water saturation and oil-phase relative permeability increased whereas the water-phase relative permeability decreased. Moreover, nanoparticles tended to adhere to the pore surface of the rock, which significantly changed the wettability of cores to strongly water-wet conditions. Nanofluid displacement tests showed that additional 4.48–10.33% increments in the oil recovery can be obtained compared to conventional waterflooding. With increasing nanoparticle concentration, the viscosity and asphaltene content of the produced oil gradually decreased. The results showed that the optimum nanoparticle concentration was 10 ppm, whereas further a increase in the injected nanoparticle concentration could plug the pore throats, resulting in a slight decrease in tertiary oil recovery. The effects of nanofluid imbibition on the recovery were more significant at lower injection rates, leading to higher recoveries. Furthermore, it was found that cyclic nanofluid injection can provide higher tertiary oil recovery than a continuous nanofluid injection scheme.

Knowledge of the fate and transport of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in porous media is essential to understanding their environmental impacts. However, to date, the transport mechanisms of MOFs are not fully revealed. Meanwhile, surfactants can promote MOFs dispersion by forming a stable suspension. They also allow MOFs to migrate in the aqueous environment, which would increase the risks of MOFs being exposed to human health and the ecological environment. In this study, the effect of surfactants type and nanoparticle (NP) concentrations (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) were investigated using a sand column to study the transportability of ZIF-8 NPs in saturated porous media. Surfactants used were categorized into three groups, including cationic surfactants (CTAB, DTAB), anionic surfactants (SDBS, SDS), and nonionic surfactants (Tween 80, Tween 20). Experimental results showed that the ionic surfactants significantly increased the transportability of ZIF-8 NPs. Furthermore, a low concentration of NPs tended to break through the column under ionic surfactant conditions, and the maximum effluent recovery of ZIF-8 NPs (50 mg/L) was 87.4% in the presence of SDS. Nevertheless, ZIF-8 NPs tended to deposit in the inlet of the sand column in the presence of nonionic surfactants due to hydrodynamic bridging and straining. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of the deposition mechanism of ZIF-8 NPs as affected by surfactant types and NP concentrations. Most importantly, the study highlights those ionic surfactants had a significant impact on the mobility of ZIF-8 NPs, which arouses attention to the ecological and human health risk assessment related to the manufacturing of MOFs with the aid of various dispersing agents.

The Janus nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsions showed great application potential in various fields, including enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In this study, the amphiphilic Janus-SiO 2 nanoparticles (Janus-C12) are successfully synthesized by the Pickering emulsion method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), ζ-potential and contact angle measurements. The phase inversion from oil-in-water (O/W), multiple oil-in-water-oil (O/W/O) emulsion, to water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions was observed with the delicate control for the modification degrees of Janus-C12. The possible emulsification mechanisms for various Janus-C12 stabilized emulsions were proposed. The multiple O/W/O emulsion stability in harsh conditions and the influence factors (nanoparticles concentration, water/oil volume ratio and NaCl concentration) were studied systematically. Moreover, the Janus-C12–79% stabilized multiple O/W/O Pickering emulsions exhibited excellent EOR performance (additional oil recovery of 27.2%) in core flooding tests, and the possible EOR mechanism was explored via microscopic visualization experiments.
