In the drinking water pipeline, PO43– and iron particles will inevitably coexist, but their effects on water quality are not fully clear. Here, PO43– was shown to inhibit the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in ductile cast iron pipe (decreases of 8.7%–29.8%). The inhibition effects were proved to be related to particle structure changes induced by PO43–. The PO43– influenced particles had lower roughness, smaller particle size, and a larger amount of negative charge. In the beaker without iron, the concentration of PO43– remained nearly consistent with the initial concentration, oscillating around 1.5 mg/L, whereas the PO43– concentration in the group containing Fe(II) exhibited a notable decline, reaching 1.28 mg/L. Thus, PO43– did not play a direct role in the formation of DBPs, but modulated the physicochemical behavior of water and the characteristics of particles. Therefore, when iron corrosion occurs in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), PO43– has the ability to inhibit the formation of DBPs, but other water quality issues should be considered at the same time. This study not only explains how PO43– affects the formation of DBPs in DWDSs, but also provides new thinking on how to control the risk of DBP exposure in DWDSs, which is worthy of further research.

The commercialized lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides have been extensively applied for high-rate lithium-ion batteries due to its collective merits of fast kinetics, high specific capacity, and reasonable cost. The optimization on lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide particles is crucial for high-rate batteries since the rate capability, storage and cycling stability are highly dependent on the chemical and physical properties of the cathode materials. Herein, the particle-feature influence on the high-rate performances is investigated to unveil the structure-property relationship. Through systematic electrochemical analysis and material characterizations, a direct comparison among commercial lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide cathode materials with different particle size, doping, and crystalline structures has been performed. It is found that for polycrystalline lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide materials, appropriate Al and Zr doping and small particle size are beneficial to superior rate performance and cycling stability up to 30 C. While single-crystalline particles show outstanding storage properties compared to polycrystalline particles with similar size and ion doping. Morphological and structural evolution of the lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide particles after cycling has been revealed including the changed mixing degree of Li + /Ni 2+ , collapsing of primary particles and different parasitic reactions between the electrolyte and the particle surface. This work can provide direct guidance for the subtle design of efficient cathodes for high-rate lithium-ion batteries.

Fluidized bed coating is an efficient technology for creating outer shell layers of particles, where the formation of the shells is affected by various factors, such as raw material properties, process parameters, and equipment geometry. In this study, the effects of seed particle properties, including particle sizes, the mass of bed material, and particle density, on the properties of the coating shells are investigated. First, agglomeration tests are screened to determine the appropriate range of coating conditions within which a layer growth mode is established. Then, the coating tests are carried out, showing that, given the same fluidization number, by increasing the seed particle size or density or increasing the mass of bed material, the drying conditions are improved, resulting in a smaller porosity and denser structure of the coating shells. The coating uniformity is influenced by particle circulation. If the mass of the bed material is too small or the seed particle size or density is too large, the circulation uniformity of the seed particles is affected, which has a negative effect on the coating uniformity. Finally, the influencing mechanisms on shell porosity and particle uniformity are summarized, which can be helpful to the modeling of spray coatings in future studies.

Efficient conversion of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to renewable fuels such as 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF) is of significance for sustainable energy supply. For efficient catalyst design, it is important to understand the catalytic behavior and clarify the influence of physico-chemical properties of catalyst on reaction performance. Herein, to study the structure-activity relationships of monometallic Cu catalysts for HMF hydrogenolysis, a series of Cu/SiO2 catalysts with different physico-chemical properties were prepared and compared for their catalytic performance in HMF hydrogenolysis. It was found that Cu/SiO2-HT-8.5 catalyst prepared by hydrothermal method showed excellent activity in HMF hydrohydrolysis reaction. Under the optimal reaction condition, the total yield of liquid fuels reaches 91.6% with 57.1% yield of DMF and 34.5% yield of DMTHF in THF solvent. Characterizations such as XRD, H2-TPR, N2-adsorption/desorption, TEM and XPS revealed that the Cu particles in the Cu/SiO2-HT-8.5 catalyst have uniform size and high dispersion. The Cu species and the SiO2 support have relatively weak interaction and are easy to be reduced to Cu0, which makes it show excellent activity in the hydrogenolysis of HMF.
