Rheumatic diseases often result in joint deformities and peripheral nerve damage, leading to impaired hand function. Current wearable assistive gloves commonly rely on external forces to flex fingers for grasping, but they face limitations such as bulky hardware, complex finger manipulation, and a risk of joint injuries. This study presents a lightweight, portable, soft wearable adhesive glove based on thermoresponsive ionogels aimed at enhancing grasping function. The ionogel exhibits high adhesion (≈35 kPa to various materials) at 25 °C and low adhesion (≈6.8 kPa) at 45 °C. Smart adhesive pads use embedded flexible heaters and temperature sensors for closed-loop control of the ionogels’ temperature, providing programmable adhesion. A rapid switch from high to low adhesion is achieved within 4 s at 4 V. Additionally, a hands-free control interface uses inertial measurement units to detect the user's intent to release, facilitating easy and intuitive detachment. Weighing only 47 g, the glove is 7.2 times lighter than existing assistive gloves. Notably, it empowers users to grasp and release a variety of objects that will otherwise be unmanageable. Evaluation of various activities of daily living demonstrates that the glove significantly enhances grasping ability and increases autonomy for patients with rheumatic diseases.

Objective To develop and validate updated classification criteria for giant cell arteritis (GCA). Methods Patients with vasculitis or comparator diseases were recruited into an international cohort. The study proceeded in six phases: (1) identification of candidate items, (2) prospective collection of candidate items present at the time of diagnosis, (3) expert panel review of cases, (4) data‐driven reduction of candidate items, (5) derivation of a points‐based risk classification score in a development data set and (6) validation in an independent data set. Results The development data set consisted of 518 cases of GCA and 536 comparators. The validation data set consisted of 238 cases of GCA and 213 comparators. Age ≥50 years at diagnosis was an absolute requirement for classification. The final criteria items and weights were as follows: positive temporal artery biopsy or temporal artery halo sign on ultrasound (+5); erythrocyte sedimentation rate ≥50 mm/hour or C reactive protein ≥10 mg/L (+3); sudden visual loss (+3); morning stiffness in shoulders or neck, jaw or tongue claudication, new temporal headache, scalp tenderness, temporal artery abnormality on vascular examination, bilateral axillary involvement on imaging and fluorodeoxyglucose–positron emission tomography activity throughout the aorta (+2 each). A patient could be classified as having GCA with a cumulative score of ≥6 points. When these criteria were tested in the validation data set, the model area under the curve was 0.91 (95% CI 0.88 to 0.94) with a sensitivity of 87.0% (95% CI 82.0% to 91.0%) and specificity of 94.8% (95% CI 91.0% to 97.4%). Conclusion The 2022 American College of Rheumatology/EULAR GCA classification criteria are now validated for use in clinical research.

Ethnopharmacological relevance The whole plant of Glycine tabacina (Labill.) Benth has been used as a traditional herbal medicine to treat rheumatism , ostealgia and nephritis in China. It is also one of the sources of the renowned native herbal medicine ‘I-Tiao-Gung’ in Taiwan. Aim of the study This study aimed to investigate the anti-arthritic effect of ethanol extract of G. tabacina (GTE) in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model. Materials and methods The chemical profile of GTE was analyzed by HPLC-UV. The CIA was induced in male Wistar rats by intradermal injection of bovine type II collagen at tail root, back and ankle joints. The rats were orally administrated daily with GTE (1.11, 2.22 and 4.44 g dry weight of herb powder per kg body weight) from day 0 and continued for 30 days. Swelling volume and thickness of paw, arthritis index, X-radiographs and histopathological changes were examined to assess the severity of arthritis. Furthermore, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin1β (IL-1β), IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity and malonaldehyde (MDA) level were measured to preliminarily explore the possible mechanisms. Results Oral administration of GTE significantly ameliorated the arthritic symptoms in CIA rat model, as indicated by the effects on paws swelling and arthritis index. X-radiographic analysis and histopathological examinations demonstrated that GTE effectively protected the bone and cartilage of joints from erosion, lesion and deformation. The efficacy of GTE treatment on CIA was comparable to that of indomethacin (positive drug). Besides, the overproduction of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α was remarkably inhibited in the serum of all GTE treatment groups. The restoration of serum T-SOD activity and MDA level proved that GTE administration alleviated the oxidative stress in CIA rats. Conclusions GTE exhibited strong anti-CIA activity through inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidation in rats, suggesting its potential preventive and therapeutic effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
