Comprehensive ecological risk assessment method for multi-pesticide pollution in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, China

Limin Wang,Aiquan Dai,Yufei Dai,Li Lu,Xinyu Li,Jing Zhao,Keqiang Li

Pesticide residues and their accumulation in marine environments pose potential threats to the ecosystem balance and human health. Assessment of pesticide residue levels and ecological risks in marine waters is insufficient. Therefore, we conducted a quantitative analysis of four different categories of pesticides in the surface waters of the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea in China. A comprehensive ecological risk assessment framework was constructed based on the importance of ecosystem services, utilizing the risk quotient (RQ) and entropy weighting methods to evaluate the multi-pesticide ecological risks in the study area. Thirteen pesticides were detected in the surface waters, with total concentration levels ranging from 8.18 to 80.60 ng/L, and the herbicide Atrazine and insecticide Imidacloprid were found at the highest levels. Concentration levels were higher in the Bohai Sea than in the Yellow Sea, and the highest area was mainly located on the coast of Shandong Province, China. The ecological risk of multi-pesticide pollution was the highest in the coastal regions of Shandong and was associated with Atrazine and Acetamiprid. Source analysis suggested that triazine herbicide and neonicotinoid insecticides are predominantly land-sourced, whereas sulfonylurea herbicides are primarily atmospheric. This study provides valuable support for formulating relevant environmental protection policies and measures.

Effects of low concentration of gallic acid on the growth and microcystin production of Microcystis aeruginosa

Yu Luo,Guohua Dao,Guoquan Zhou,Zhuoxuan Wang,Zhixiang Xu,Xinyue Lu,Xuejun Pan

Gallic acid (GA) is an allelochemical that has been utilized in high concentrations for the management of harmful algal blooms (HABs). However, there is limited knowledge regarding its impact on the growth of M. aeruginosa as the GA concentration transitions from high to low during the HABs control process. This study has revealed that as the GA concentration decreases (from 10 mg/L to 0.001 μg/L), a dose-response relationship becomes apparent in the growth of M. aeruginosa and microcystin production, characterized by high-dose inhibition and low-dose stimulation. Notably, at the concentration of 0.1 μg/L GA, the most significant growth-promoting effect on both growth and MCs synthesis was observed. The growth rate and maximum cell density were increased by 1.09 and 1.16 times, respectively, compared to those of the control group. Additionally, the contents of MCs synthesis saw a remarkable increase, up by 1.85 times. Furthermore, lower GA concentrations stimulated the viability of cyanobacterial cells, resulting in substantially higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and chlorophyll-a (Chl a ) compared to other concentrations. Most importantly, the expression of genes governing MCs synthesis was significantly upregulated, which appears to be the primary driver behind the significantly higher MCs levels compared to other conditions. The ecological risk quotient (RQ) value of 0.1 μg/L GA was the highest of all experimental groups, which was approximately 30 times higher than that of the control, indicating moderate risk. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to the effect of M. aeruginosa growth, metabolism and water ecological risk under the process of reducing GA concentration after dosing during the HABs control process.

Dissipation behavior, residues distribution and dietary risk assessment of tembotrione and its metabolite in maize via QuEChERS using HPLC-MS/MS technique

Yue Su,Weijun Wang,Jiye Hu,Xiaolu Liu

The dissipation and residues of tembotrione in corn field application were investigated using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. The average recoveries of tembotrione in maize, corncob, and straw were in the ranges of 98–107% with relative standard deviations (RSDs ≤9.3%), respectively. The recoveries of M5 was in the ranges of 90–108% in all three matrices of maize, with RSDs were 3.3–12.8%. The LODs for tembotrione and M5 in maize were 0.85 μg/L and 1.0 μg/L, 0.84 μg/L and 0.43 μg/L in corncob, 0.94 μg/L and 1.5 μg/L in straw, respectively. The LOQs of the method in maize grain, corncob and straw were 0.01, 0.01 and 0.05 mg/kg for both analytes, respectively. The dissipation of tembotrione in straw was in compliance with the first-order dynamic equation, with half-lives of 1.18–1.23 days at Beijing and Heilongjiang. Total residue of tembotrione in maize grain and corncob matrix were both below 0.02 mg/kg, lower than the max residue limit (MRL) recommended by european food safety authority (EFSA). Risk quotients (RQs) of this pesticide was assessed via comparing national estimated daily intake with acceptable daily intake . The dietary intake risk of tembotrione residue in maize was very low for all groups of Chinese residents. These data could provide scientific data and strategies and facilitate Chinese government to establish the MRLs of tembotrione.

Benzotriazole (BT) and benzothiazole (BTH) derivatives as emerging marine pollutants in the Pearl River Estuary: Spatiotemporal distribution, environmental fates, and ecological risks

Xiaoxiao Chen,Qianyi Huang,Rui Hou,Shan Liu,Hengxiang Li,Tiantian Chen,Xiangrong Xu

The estuarine environment is a complex and dynamic ecosystem in the transition zone where rivers meet the sea. However, information on the distribution, fate, and risks of novel organic ultraviolet filters and stabilizers (OUVs) in estuaries remains limited. In this study, the occurrence of benzotriazole (BT) and benzothiazole (BTH) derivatives in seawater, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) was analysed. The total concentrations of both types of derivatives were much lower than those of their parent compounds in all the samples. 2-(2-Hydroxy-3-tert-butyl-5-methyl-phenyl)-5-chloro-benzotriazole (UV-326) and 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (5-TTri) were the main contributors to the total occurrence of BT derivatives in seawater, whereas UV-326 and 5-chloro-2-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl) benzotriazole (UV-327) emerged as significant derivatives in sediments. 2-mercapto-benzothiazole (2-SH-BTH) and 2-thiocyanomethylthio-benzothiazole (2-SCNMeS-BTH) were the most important BTH derivatives in seawater and sediments, respectively. The mass balance modelling results indicated that riverine and coastal discharges serve as the primary input pathways for BT derivatives (1.50 × 10 4 and 8.29 × 10 3  kg/yr in summer and winter, respectively) and BTH derivatives (1.32 × 10 4 and 9.46 × 10 3  kg/yr in summer and winter, respectively) into the PRE. Moreover, outputs to the outer ocean play a decisive role in determining their main fates, with contributions ranging from 69.3 % to 84.3 %. The sedimentation and degradation of BT and BTH derivatives were not the primary sinks in seawater, suggesting that the estuary cannot serve as a significant barrier for these land-based pollutants. The risk quotient (RQ) results indicated that 2-SCNMeS-BTH has a moderate ecological risk (RQ of 0.105) in sediments, whereas all other BTs and BTHs have a relatively low risk (RQ < 0.1). This investigation offers pivotal insights into the environmental behaviours and ecological impacts of emerging marine pollutants within estuarine ecosystems.
