Three-stage pretreatment of food waste to improve fuel characteristics and incineration performance with recovery of process by-products

Rui Li,Minghui Gong,Bernard Wiafe Biney,Kun Chen,Wei Xia,He Liu,Aijun Guo

As of 2020, the annual generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in China has surged to 235.12 Mt, and food waste (FW) accounts for more than 60 %. The most common treatment method is incineration, which accounts for 62.13 %. This research proposes a three-stage pretreatment method for FW that is suitable for incineration while recovering by-products and energy from the pretreatment process. The first stage is dehydration; as compared to hot air drying (HAD) processes, freeze drying (FD) exhibits a higher dehydration and oil preservation rate, allowing for the preservation of organic matter content and the recovery of freshwater resources from FW. The second stage is oil recovery; the FW extracted oil (FWEO) can be used to produce biodiesel, and this stage also helps to improve the effectiveness of the subsequent torrefaction process. The third stage improves the energy and fuel characteristics of the organic residue of FW and enhances the combustion performance by optimizing the torrefaction temperature. The solid fuel obtained at a torrefaction temperature of 350 °C shows the best combustion performance, with a solid yield of 35.76 %, a torrefaction temperature of 300 °C might be chosen to further improve the solid yield.

Integrating photoenzymatic decarboxylation and anaerobic digestion to convert food waste into hydrocarbon: Performance and process intensification

Xiaobo Guo,Ao Xia,Feng Li,Yun Huang,Xianqing Zhu,Wuyuan Zhang,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao

The integration of photoenzymatic decarboxylation and anaerobic digestion (AD) to convert food waste into hydrocarbon was conducted for the first time. The performance of fatty acid photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis NC64A ( Cv FAP) was optimized in a biphasic system with petroleum ether as the oil phase; conversion of palmitic acid reached 42.2 % in 1 h, which was 26.4 times that in the single-phase catalysis. This biphasic system was further employed to convert the lipase hydrolysate of waste oil from food waste into hydrocarbon, where the production rate of C17 hydrocarbon was 1.7 mM/h. Meanwhile, the non-oil components from food waste were used in AD to generate C1 hydrocarbon methane. Adding magnetite increased the specific methane yield up to 154.0 % compared to the control group on day 22. The average hydrocarbon generation rate and energy production rate in photoenzymatic decarboxylation were 24.3 and 269 times those in AD, respectively.

Effects of Different Nitrogen Sources and Ratios to Carbon on Larval Development and Bioconversion Efficiency in Food Waste Treatment by Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens)

Yan Lu,Shouyu Zhang,Shibo Sun,Minghuo Wu,Yongming Bao,Huiyan Tong,Miaomiao Ren,Ning Jin,Jianqiang Xu,Hao Zhou,Weiping Xu

Simple SummaryBlack soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have received global research interest and industrial application due to their high performance on the organic waste treatment. However, the substrate C/N property, which may affect larvae development and the waste bioconversion process greatly, is significantly less studied. The current study focused on the food waste treatment by BSFL, compared the nitrogen supplying effects of 9 nitrogen species (i.e., NH4Cl, NaNO3, urea, uric acid, Gly, L-Glu, L-Glu:L-Asp (1:1,w/w), soybean flour, and fish meal), and further examined the C/N effects on the larval development and bioconversion process. We found that NH4Cl and NaNO3led to poor larval growth and survival, while 7 organic nitrogen species exerted no harm to the larvae. Urea was further chosen to adjust the C/Ns. Results showed that lowering the C/N from the initial 21:1 to 18:1–14:1 improved the waste reduction and larvae production performance, and C/N of 18:1–16:1 was further beneficial for the larval protein and lipid bioconversion, whereas C/N of 12:1–10:1 resulted in a significant performance decline. Therefore, the C/N range of 18:1–16:1 is likely the optimal condition for food waste treatment by BSFL and adjusting food waste C/N with urea could be a practical method for the performance improvement.AbstractBiowaste treatment by black soldier fly larvae (BSFL,Hermetia illucens) has received global research interest and growing industrial application. Larvae farming conditions, such as temperature, pH, and moisture, have been critically examined. However, the substrate carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), one of the key parameters that may affect larval survival and bioconversion efficiency, is significantly less studied. The current study aimed to compare the nitrogen supplying effects of 9 nitrogen species (i.e., NH4Cl, NaNO3, urea, uric acid, Gly, L-Glu, L-Glu:L-Asp (1:1,w/w), soybean flour, and fish meal) during food waste larval treatment, and further examine the C/N effects on the larval development and bioconversion process, using the C/N adjustment with urea from the initial 21:1 to 18:1, 16:1, 14:1, 12:1, and 10:1, respectively. The food wastes were supplied with the same amount of nitrogen element (1 g N/100 g dry wt) in the nitrogen source trial and different amount of urea in the C/N adjustment trial following larvae treatment. The results showed that NH4Cl and NaNO3caused significant harmful impacts on the larval survival and bioconversion process, while the 7 organic nitrogen species resulted in no significant negative effect. Further adjustment of C/N with urea showed that the C/N range between 18:1 and 14:1 was optimal for a high waste reduction performance (73.5–84.8%,p< 0.001) and a high larvae yield (25.3–26.6%,p= 0.015), while the C/N range of 18:1 to 16:1 was further optimal for an efficient larval protein yield (10.1–11.1%,p= 0.003) and lipid yield (7.6–8.1%,p= 0.002). The adjustment of C/N influenced the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD,p= 0.015), whereas exerted no obvious impact on the larval amino acid composition. Altogether, organic nitrogen is more suitable than NH4Cl and NaNO3as the nitrogen amendment during larval food waste treatment, addition of small amounts of urea, targeting C/N of 18:1–14:1, would improve the waste reduction performance, and application of C/N at 18:1–16:1 would facilitate the larval protein and lipid bioconversion process. Keywords:nitrogen source;carbon to nitrogen ratio;food waste;urea;black soldier fly larvae;Hermetia illucens

Experimental study on the energy conversion of food waste via supercritical water gasification: Improvement of hydrogen production

Mi Yan,Hongcai Su,Dwi Hantoko,Ekkachai Kanchanatip,Fauziah Binti Shahul Hamid,Sicheng Zhang,Guobin Wang,Zhang Xu

In this study, the model food waste was gasified to hydrogen-rich syngas in a batch reactor under supercritical water condition. The model food consisted of rice, chicken, cabbage, and cooking oil. The effects of the main operating parameters including temperature (420–500 °C), residence time (20–60 min) and feedstock concentration (2–10 wt%) were investigated. Under the optimal condition at 500 °C, 2 wt% feedstock and 60 min residence time, the highest H 2 yield of 13.34 mol/kg and total gas yield of 28.27 mol/kg were obtained from non-catalytic experiments. In addition, four commercial catalysts namely FeCl 3 , K 2 CO 3 , activated carbon, and KOH were employed to investigate the catalytic effect of additives at the optimal condition. The results showed that the highest hydrogen yield of 20.37 mol/kg with H 2 selectivity of 113.19%, and the total gas yield of 38.36 mol/kg were achieved with 5 wt% KOH addition Moreover, the low heating value of gas products from catalytic experiments with KOH increased by 32.21% compared to the non-catalytic experiment. The catalytic performance of the catalysts can be ranked in descending order as KOH > activated carbon > FeCl 3  > K 2 CO 3 . The supercritical water gasification (SCWG) with KOH addition can be a potential applied technology for food waste treatment with production of hydrogen-rich gases.

Fe3O4 enhanced efficiency of volatile fatty acids production in anaerobic fermentation of food waste at high loading

Lanting Wang,Zhongfang Lei,Xiaojing Yang,Chi Zhang,Chang Liu,Kazuya Shimizu,Zhenya Zhang,Tian Yuan

High treatment capacity for food waste (FW) is required due to the huge amount generated worldwide. Conversion of FW to volatile fatty acids (VFAs) via anaerobic fermentation is a promising technology; however, inhibition of VFAs production could easily occur at high loadings. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 was used to enhance VFAs production in anaerobic fermentation of FW at high loading, and the mechanisms involved were revealed at microbial levels. Results showed that Fe 3 O 4 significantly enhanced VFAs yield and VFAs productivity of microbes by 160% at high loading (substrate to inoculum (S/I) ratio of 3). The enhancement effect of Fe 3 O 4 was mainly due to the accelerated hydrolysis of particulate/soluble organics, the enriched hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria, and the reduced relative abundance of Lactobacillus . This study provides a new approach for the high-efficient treatment of FW at high loadings, while the performance and economic benefit should be further studied for practical application.

Yeast enrichment facilitated lipid removal and bioconversion by black soldier fly larvae in the food waste treatment

Hongxu Lu,Yanxia Liu,Wenyue Shen,Yang Zhou,Xiangwei Ma,Shibo Sun,Xiaoying Dong,Fengyun Ji,Huiyan Tong,Jianqiang Xu,Gaohong He,Weiping Xu

Food waste can be converted into insectile fatty acids (FAs) by the larvae of black soldier fly (BSFL), Hermetia illucens , for use in the feed sector or as a source of biodiesel. However, waste oil was less decomposed than carbohydrate or protein in frass due to the limitation of larval lipid metabolism. In this study, 10 yeast strains were screened, corresponding to six species, to examine their capacity of improving lipid transformation performance by BSFL. The species of Candida lipolytica was superior to the other five species, which exhibited significantly higher lipid reduction rate (95.0–97.1 %) than the control (88.7 %), and the larval FA yields achieved 82.3–115.5 % of the food waste FA matters, suggesting that BSFL not only transformed waste oil but also biosynthesized FAs from waste carbohydrate and other substances. Further, the CL2 strain of Candida lipolytica was examined for treating food waste containing high lipid content (16–32 %). The lipid removal rate was found improved from 21.4 to 42.3 % (control) to 80.5–93.3% in the waste containing 20–32 % lipid. The upper limit of lipid content that could be endured by BSFL was ≈16 %, and the CL2-enrichment elevated the upper limit to ≈24 %. Fungal community analysis indicated that Candida spp. accounted for the lipid removal improvement. The Candida spp. CL2 strain may facilitate the lipid reduction and transformation by BSFL through microbial catabolizing and assimilation of waste FAs. Altogether, this study suggests that yeast enrichment is feasible in improving lipid transformation by BSFL especially for food waste exhibiting high lipid content.

Feasibility of Efficient, Direct, Butanol Production from Food Waste without Nutrient Supplement by Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum N1-4

Xiaona Wang,Haishu Sun,Yonglin Wang,Fangxia Wang,Wenbin Zhu,Chuanfu Wu,Qunhui Wang,Ming Gao

This study investigated the feasibility of direct butanol production from starchy food waste (without saccharification and nutrient supplementation). First,Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicumN1-4 was selected as an efficient starch-utilizing clostridia, and amylose was used by the strain more readily than amylopectin for solvent production. Furthermore, direct fermentation avoided substrate inhibition due to saccharification and produced 12.1 g/L of butanol at a production rate of 0.705 g/L/h and a yield of 0.402 C-mol/C-mol with a solid–liquid ratio of 1:1 (w/v). At a solid–liquid ratio of 1:2 (w/v), the maximum butanol production rate in the direct mode was 2.05 times higher than that in the saccharified mode. Elemental analysis demonstrated that the food waste analyzed was rich in trace elements and, hence, exogenous nutrient supplementation was unnecessary. Collectively, direct butanol production from food waste could function as a low-cost, highly efficient, and simple fermentative process, which is a promising strategy for food waste disposal. Keywords:butanol production;food waste;direct fermentation;no nutrient supplementation;Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum

Lipase pretreatment enhances biochar-assisted anaerobic digestion of food waste

Yue Ouyang,Ying Liu,Longjin Tian,Yongyu Ding,Guozhi Fan,Cheng Pan,Qunpeng Cheng

Anaerobic digestion is a promising technology for the treatment of food waste (FW) but it requires optimization to improve its performance. This study investigated whether combining the addition of biochar with lipase pretreatment could improve the anaerobic digestion of FW. The results showed that biochar stimulated the release of soluble substances, resulting in an increase in the methane yield of groups with added biochar by 16.24% to 19.36% in comparison with the group without biochar. Lipase pretreatment substantially shortened the fermentation time required to complete the anaerobic digestion, from 15 to 9 days. Lipase pretreatment further improved microbial abundance and promoted the enrichment of functional microbes in the anaerobic digestion of FW mediated by biochar. It also changed the methane production pathway from acetotrophic to hydrogenotrophic, thereby ensuring the stability of the anaerobic digestion system in the presence of a high ammonia nitrogen concentration.

Enhancing Hydrogen and Resource Recovery from Food Waste: A Cascading Approach from Concept to Process

Jiayin Hao,Huihui Zhou,Kun Feng,Zheng Zhong,Jing Wang,Chuandong Wu,Rui Fang,Defeng Xing

Effective management of food waste (FW) is essential for achieving energy self-sufficiency and carbon neutrality in food waste treatment plants (FWTPs). Developing a multitandem and efficient FW treatment process is crucial for performing more energy recovery at on-site plants. In this study, a cascading process was developed to treat FW from generation to complete disposal. Compared with the unpretreated FW (UP-FW), enzymolysis exhibited higher hydrolysis efficiencies for FW. Specifically, the concentrations of glucose, chemical oxygen demand, and total organic carbon increased by 259.42%, 49.31%, and 33.08%, respectively. The pretreated FW exhibited a considerable hydrogen yield of 35.81 ± 1.47 mL/g-VS, roughly double that of raw FW used as the substrate, which was also accompanied by 26.52% and 19.10% increases in ethanol and acetate production, respectively. The recyclable catalyst (FRB800) pyrolyzed from the fermentation residue showed superior Orange G (OG) removal efficiency and better anti-interference ability in the actual water body. OG could be completely removed within 30 min, dominated by singlet oxygen, nonradical pathways, and diverse active sites on FRB800. This process synchronizes the recovery of hydrogen and resources with the degradation of pollutants. Overall, these findings indicate that the cascading process is an alternative approach to the complete disposal of food waste and possesses significant engineering value and broad application prospects for FWTPs.

A waste upcycling loop: Two-factor adaptive evolution of microalgae to increase polyunsaturated fatty acid production using food waste

Xiang Wang,Si-Fen Liu,Zhen-Yao Wang,Ting-Bin Hao,Srinivasan Balamurugan,Da-Wei Li,Yuhe He,Hong-Ye Li,Carol Sze Ki Lin

The stagnant supply of wild stocks of deep-sea fish and the potential bioaccumulation of toxic pollutants have promoted the research on more sustainable alternatives for the production of valuable polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for human supplements. The diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum has emerged as a promising alternative to oils from deep-sea fish for PUFA production. However, the level of PUFA production by native microalgal strains is not high enough for commercial applications. Improved phenotypes of native microalgal species are urgently required to fulfil commercial demands and achieve economic and environmental sustainability. In this study, we subjected wild-type P. tricornutum to a two-factor adaptive evolution process to successfully generate an evolved strain, ALE-Pt1, with enhanced biomass and PUFA production capabilities under high-glucose conditions. We used food waste hydrolysate as a primary negligible-value carbon source and a substitute for purified glucose for ALE-Pt1 cultivation under mixotrophic conditions, to improve biomass yield and PUFA production. The semi-continuous fermentation of ALE-Pt1 using food waste resulted in the production of 7.8 g of biomass and 0.87 g of eicosapentaenoic acid from a 2.8-L culture volume in a 2-L bioreactor . This microalgae-based food waste upcycling loop, combined with an adaptive evolution process, is a promising PUFA production strategy. Our results provide novel insights into PUFA production via sustainable microalgal-based waste valorisation.

Cascading disposal for food waste by integration of hydrothermal carbonization and supercritical water gasification

Mi Yan,Jianyong Liu,Kunio Yoshikawa,Jiahao Jiang,Yan Zhang,Gaojun Zhu,Yu Liu,Dwi Hantoko

Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) has drawn great attention as one of the wet biomass conversion technologies. This study investigated a cascading energy recovery process by integrating hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and SCWG, aiming to achieve the efficient disposal and conversion of HTC process water. The physicochemical characteristics of hydrochars produced by HTC at different temperatures and residence times were analyzed. An energy densified hydrochar with calorific value of 22.68 MJ/kg was obtained under 275 °C for 60 min. SCWG was adopted to efficiently achieve the conversion of HTC process water into H 2 -rich syngas . The effect of reaction temperatures (360 °C, 420 °C, 480 °C), residence times (15 min, 30 min, 45 min) and, and alkali catalysts on gasification characteristics and contaminants removal performance were studied. The highest H 2 production of 1151.26 mmol/L was obtained at 480 °C and 45 min with 5 wt% KOH. The highest TOC and COD removal efficiencies of 83.04% and 82.99% were achieved at 480 °C, 45 min, respectively. The efficiencies of SCWG were enhanced by HTC, and less CO 2 were generated. This cascading energy recovery process efficiently achieves the conversion of food waste to solid fuel and provides possible optimization of SCWG process.

Evaluating the role of salinity in enhanced biogas production from two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste by zero-valent iron

Shengjie Chen,Fubing Yao,Zhoujie Pi,Li He,Kun Luo,Xiaoming Li,Qi Yang

Salts including NaCl are the most common food flavoring agents so they are often accumulated in food waste (FW) and have potential impact on anaerobic digestion (AD) of FW. In this study, the enhanced biogas production from two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD) of FW by microscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) under different salinity (3, 6, 9, and 15 g NaCl/L) was evaluated. Under salinity stress, ZVI becomes a continue-release electron donor due to the enhanced corrosion and dissolution effect and the slow-down surface passivation , further improving the performance of TSAD. Experimental results revealed that the biogas production including H 2 and CH 4 from TSAD with 10 g/L ZVI addition was promoted under salinity stress. The maximum H 2 and CH 4 yield (303.38 mL H 2 /g-VS and 253.84 mL CH 4 /g-VS) were observed at the salinity 9 g NaCl/L. Compared with that of zero salinity, they increased by 40.94% and 318.46%, respectively. Additionally, Sedimentibacter , an exoelectrogen that can participate in the direct interspecies electron transfer , also exhibited the highest relative abundance (34.96%) at the salinity 9 g NaCl/L. These findings obtained in this study might be of great importance for understanding the influence of salinity on the enhanced AD by ZVI.
