Advances in the Role and Mechanisms of Essential Oils and Plant Extracts as Natural Preservatives to Extend the Postharvest Shelf Life of Edible Mushrooms

Yuxi Guo,Xuefeng Chen,Pin Gong,Ruotong Wang,Aoyang Han,Zhenfang Deng,Zhuoya Qi,Hui Long,Jiating Wang,Wenbo Yao,Wenjuan Yang,Jing Wang,Nan Li

China has a large variety of edible mushrooms and ranks first in the world in terms of production and variety. Nevertheless, due to their high moisture content and rapid respiration rate, they experience constant quality deterioration, browning of color, loss of moisture, changes in texture, increases in microbial populations, and loss of nutrition and flavor during postharvest storage. Therefore, this paper reviews the effects of essential oils and plant extracts on the preservation of edible mushrooms and summarizes their mechanisms of action to better understand their effects during the storage of mushrooms. The quality degradation process of edible mushrooms is complex and influenced by internal and external factors. Essential oils and plant extracts are considered environmentally friendly preservation methods for better postharvest quality. This review aims to provide a reference for the development of new green and safe preservation and provides research directions for the postharvest processing and product development of edible mushrooms. Keywords:edible mushrooms;essential oils;plant extracts;postharvest;mechanism

Yi Shao,Haiyan Liu,Liujuan Huang,Xiaoyan Zhao,Zhiyong Zhao,Xianli Yang,Changyan Zhou

This study aims to investigate the prevalence of naturally produced (NP) formaldehyde in edible mushrooms cultivated in China and the formaldehyde-exposure-related health risks of the mushrooms. Therefore, 2000 edible mushrooms samples including Lentinus edodes , Auricularia , Pleurotus ostreatus , Agaricus bisporus , Flammulina velutipes and Tremella fuciformis were collected from 21 provinces from 2013 to 2015. Then, their formaldehyde levels were analyzed by acetylacetone spectrophotometry , and the risks of formaldehyde exposure from the consumption mushrooms were calculated by point assessment and probability assessment using @RISK software. The results showed that, NP formaldehyde was common in farm-sourced (FS) samples, with the maximum level of 107 mg/kg in FS L. edodes . The formaldehyde levels in market-sourced (MS) fresh L. edodes samples were lower than those in FS L . edodes samples, and the formaldehyde levels in MS dried L . edodes samples ranged from 0 mg/kg to 270 mg/kg. The formaldehyde levels in fresh A . polytricha , P . ostreatus , A . bisporus and F . velutipes samples were not greater than 28 mg/kg, and those in dried A . auricula and T . fuciformis samples were not greater than 46 mg/kg. The results of point assessment and probability assessment indicated that, consuming the mushrooms posed no health risk to Chinese consumers.

Drying methods on fruit quality and antioxidant activity of two rare edible fungi (Dictyophora rubrovolvata and Phallus impudicus L.)

Huijuan Liu,Dong Xiang,Zhifei Cheng,Lin Ma,Shuyu Yang,Jiao Xie

Fresh D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus are perishable due to their high water content and strong postharvest respiration, which seriously affect their edible value and economic benefits. Drying performs the crucial role in maintaining the quality of edible fungi and extending their shelf life, while the extraction method after drying is also important to the material composition and functional properties of edible fungi. According to the color difference and texture indicators, 45 °C was found to be the optimal temperature choice for both hot-air and vacuum drying. In addition, polysaccharide content in the extract of dried D . rubrovolvata was higher than that of P . impudicus, while the polyphenol abundance in the extract of dried P . impudicus was better than that of D . rubrovolvata. Hot water extraction or thermal ultrasonic treatment was beneficial for the antioxidant activity in D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus extracts. Based on the correlation analysis, it was showed that polyphenols contributed significantly more to the antioxidant capacity of D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus, especially P . impudicus, than that of polysaccharides. The related results provided new insights into the improvement of product quality and the development of functional products for D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus.

Optimization of fungi co-fermentation for improving anthraquinone contents and antioxidant activity using artificial neural networks

Jiao Yang,Yun Huang,Haiyu Xu,Dongyu Gu,Fa Xu,Jintian Tang,Chen Fang,Yi Yang

The fermentation products of edible fungi are rich in anthraquinones and have a variety of activities, including the antioxidant activity. Because of the large number of combinations, it is very difficult to obtain the optimal multi-strains co-fermentation to improve the yield of anthraquinone. In the present study, an intelligent model based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) using backpropagation (BP) and radial basis function (RBF) algorithms was developed and validated to predict the anthraquinone contents in 136 two fungi and 680 three fungi co-fermented products. After experimental validation of the anthraquinone contents, the mean absolute error and the mean bias error of the results from RBF ANN were lower than those from BP ANN. The results indicated that the anthraquinone contents in A. bisporus , C. comatus and H. erinaceus co-fermentation product was the highest (2.11%). Furthermore, this co-fermentation product showed strong antioxidant activity.

Influence of mixed alkali on the preparation of edible fungus substrate porous carbon material and its application for the removal of dye

Siji Chen,Bolun Zhang,Yuhan Xia,Huan Chen,Guang Chen,Shanshan Tang

Edible fungus substrate (EFS) is a kind of agricultural waste produced by the cultivation of edible fungus. Improper handling of a large quantity of EFS may lead to environmental pollution. In this work, three porous carbon materials (PCEFS), derived from EFS, were prepared using simple techniques, including carbonization and chemical activation. Three types of alkalis were used as activators to investigate the different physicochemical properties of PCEFS (PCEFS-MA, PCEFS-K, and PCEFS-Na), which aims to clarify the influence of mixed alkali (MA) on the preparation method. The textural characterization of the PCEFS showed that the treatments produced some of changes, especially in the surface area and the structure of pores. Besides, synthetic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) was selected as the model dye to test the adsorption properties, including the effects of pH, the adsorption kinetics, and the adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities of 1497 mg g −1 , 1103 mg g −1 , and 1055 mg g −1 for PCEFS-MA, PCEFS-K, and PCEFS-Na at the pH value of 9 were observed, which were higher than some of the contemporary adsorbents. This study has given evidence that MA can serve as an efficient activator for preparing porous carbon material.

Magnetic effervescence-assisted switchable solvent dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the determination of pyrethroids in edible fungi

Yaoyao Qiao,Jinbao Qiao,Jinling Cao,Feier Cheng,Yanfen Cheng,Mingchang Chang,Junlong Meng,Jingyu Liu,Shaojun Yun,Cuiping Feng

A simple, rapid, effective, and environmental friendly analytical procedure for determining three pyrethroids (tetramethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin and fenvalerate) in edible fungi was developed by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection after magnetic effervescence-assisted switchable solvent dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (MEA-SHS-DLLME). In the extraction procedure , hexanoic acid and carbon dioxide were used as the extraction and dispersion solvents. The magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @ graphene with large specific surface area were used to adsorb the extraction solvent and the target analytes . The optimized conditions were as follows: sodium hexanoate 45 mg, citric acid 90 mg, sodium bicarbonate 60 mg, Fe 3 O 4 @ graphene mixing ratio 1:6, and dosage of Fe 3 O 4 @ graphene 25 mg. Under these conditions, accuracy and precision were demonstrated at the concentration range of 1.25–125 mg/kg, and the correlation coefficients were between 0.9903 and 0.9998. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.0067–0.0329 mg/kg and 0.0224–0.1096 mg/kg, and the extraction recovery was 81.0–97.4 % with relative standard deviations < 5.1 %. The technique had been successfully proven to be valuable for the ultrasensitive detection of tetramethrin , lambda-cyhalothrin and fenvalerate in 5 kinds of edible fungi, and only magnetic effervescent tablets containing switchable solvent were needed without dispersing solvent, centrifugation, and complex instruments. Moreover, the extraction recovery was better than other reported methods. This novel approach has a favorable potential to be applied for detection of pyrethroid residues in other samples.

Quality, improvement of soluble dietary fiber from Dictyophora indusiata by-products by steam explosion and cellulase modification: Structural and functional analysis

Mengfan Lin,Changrong Wang,Wenfei Wu,Qingsong Miao,Zebin Guo

Steam explosion (SE) and cellulase treatment are potentially effective processing methods for Dictyophora indusiata by-products, for use in high-value applications. The treatment conditions were optimized by response surface methodology, increasing the soluble dietary fiber (SDF) yield by 1.52 and 1.16 times after the SE and cellulase treatments, respectively. The both treatments did not affect the functional groups and crystal types of the polysachharides, but both reduced the crystallinity. The SDF had a porous microstructure, which would increase the specific surface area and facilitates the adsorption of water and glucose, thereby improving its functional properties. SE and cellulase treatment significantly improved the hydration capacity of SDF; the glucose adsorption capacity increased by 1.15 and 1.07 times, respectively. Overall, the modified SDF showed different degrees of advantages in terms of yield, physicochemical and functionality. This study demonstrated that SE and cellulase are effective modification methods for SDF made from D. indusiata by-products.

Rapid analysis and risk assessment of perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms from Yunnan, China

Zhixin Fei,Hang Zhang,Qing Song,Mingyue Sun,Chengxi Li,Min Liu

Ubiquitous perchlorate contamination has become an important food safety issue related to human health, but contamination characteristics and health risks of perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms remain unclear. In this study, a method based on dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) clean-up procedure combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was established for the rapid analysis of perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms. Sample pretreatment was achieved by acetonitrile extraction followed by clean-up with florisil and graphitized carbon black (GCB). The proposed method presented satisfactory linearity, accuracy, precision, negligible matrix effects, and low limit of detection (LOD) (0.15 µg/kg) and limit of quantification (LOQ) (0.5 µg/kg). The recoveries at four levels (0.5, 3, 30 and 300 µg/kg) were 93.1–108.7% with relative standard deviation ranging from 2.9% to 18.2% for mushroom samples. The validated methodology was successfully applied to detect 109 wild edible mushroom samples belonging to 8 species collected from Yunnan, China, and 95.41% of the samples were found to have detectable perchlorate contamination. Concentrations of perchlorate ranged from below LOD to 29.81 μg/kg, with a mean value of 4.11 μg/kg. The risk assessment results for perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms showed no health risks to consumers.

Comparative analysis of prediction models for methane potential based on spent edible fungus substrate

Yonghua Xu,Mukesh Kumar Awasthi,Pengfei Li,Xianghui Meng,Zhi Wang

In this study, ten spent edible fungus (SEF) with different compositional features were used for the maximum methanogenic potential ( P 0 ) evaluation, and the prediction models including regression and kinetics based on this were developed separately. The results showed that the regression model with more chemical components had a good correlation with the P 0 , and at least three chemical compositions could reach the threshold of sensitivity. The Cone model showed the best fitting effect on P 0 in all kinetic models, which had higher R-square (>0.994) and lower error (1.004–5.672%). Meanwhile, the minimum digestive testing time (14 days) was determined by the evaluation of sensitivity via statistical indicators. It is concluded that the determination of the prediction model of P 0 should be evaluated with the combination of statistical indicators and specific requirements.

Speciation analysis of arsenic in edible mushrooms by high-performance liquid chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Haimin Zou,Chen Zhou,Yongxin Li,Xiaosong Yang,Jun Wen,Shaojie Song,Changxiong Li,Chengjun Sun

Some varieties of edible mushrooms can accumulate high contents of arsenic, which is a public health concern. In this study, we developed a high-performance liquid chromatography method linked to inductively coupled plasma triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS/MS) for sensitive and accurate determination of arsenite, arsenate, monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid, arsenocholine and arsenobetaine in edible mushrooms. The six arsenic species were extracted ultrasonically from mushrooms using ultrapure water at 60 °C as the solvent, separated on a PRP-X100 anion exchange column (4.1 × 250 mm, 10 µm), with 20 mmol/L NH 4 HCO 3 and 50 mmol/L (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 as the mobile phase, and quantified using ICP-MS/MS in the oxygen reaction mode. The linear range of the method was 0.5 µg/L–100 µg/L with detection and quantification limits of 2.5 µg/kg–10 µg/kg (S/N = 3), and 8 µg/kg–33 µg/kg (S/N = 10), respectively. This method was applied successfully to the detection and speciation of arsenic in eight varieties (266 samples) of mushrooms. Our results indicated that most wild edible mushrooms contained organic arsenic, mainly arsenobetaine and arsenocholine. However, the inorganic arsenic content of Armillariella tabescens (3.63 mg/kg) and parts of the cultivated Agaricus blazei murrill (up to 4.50 mg/kg) were relatively high, which is potential risk to the health of consumers.

Microwave-assisted catalytic fast pyrolysis of spent edible mushroom substrate for bio-oil production using surface modified zeolite catalyst

Bo Zhang,Guiwei Tan,Zhaoping Zhong,Roger Ruan

In order to minimize coke yield and improve hydrocarbon production during microwave-assisted catalytic fast pyrolysis of spent edible mushroom substrate, ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst is modified with pre-coking treatment, chemical vapor deposition of SiO 2 , and ethylene diamine tetraacetie acid (EDTA) chemical modification method, respectively (labeled PC-ZSM-5, SiO 2 -ZSM-5 and EDTA-ZSM-5). Experimental results show that all the modification methods result in a loss of external acid sites of ZSM-5. Among the three modified catalysts, the maximum oil fraction yield and the minimum coke yield are obtained with SiO 2 -ZSM-5. The relative content of hydrocarbons in oil fraction increases in the following order: SiO 2 -ZSM-5   >   EDTA-ZSM-5   >   PC-ZSM-5   >   original ZSM-5. Moreover, SiO 2 -ZSM-5 shows the highest relative contents of toluene and xylene, whereas original ZSM-5 produces the lowest ones. Besides, the selectivity of benzene in aromatics follows the order of original ZSM-5   >   EDTA-ZSM-5   >   PC-ZSM-5   >   SiO 2 -ZSM-5, while the selectivity of toluene   +   xylene presents the opposite trend.

Rapid and Accurate Screening of Lysine-Producing Edible Mushrooms via the Homocitrate Synthase Gene as a Universal Molecular Marker

Zili Song,Ruilin Zhao,Hongjiao Zhang,Penglin Wei,Landa Qi,Guocan Chen,Wen-Bing Yin,Wei Li

Edible mushrooms are important nutraceutical sources of foods and drugs, which can produce various nutritional ingredients including all essential amino acids. The method of rapid screening for the strains producing specific functional components is very indispensable. Homocitrate synthase is one of the key enzymes in the α-aminoadipate pathway for lysine biosynthesis and has preferable sequence conservation in Agaricales. Based on the blast of homocitrate synthase homologous genes of strains of Agaricales, we achieved combinations of degenerate primers as molecular markers to rapidly screen the lysine-producing edible mushrooms. The experimental results revealed that the consistency between PCR amplification and HPLC analysis attained 82 and 75% in strains of Agaricales and Polyporales, respectively. The finding showed that the molecular marker has higher universality for screening edible mushroom resources of Agaricales. This PCR-based approach shows excellent potential in evaluating and discriminating edible wild-grown mushrooms with high lysine content in Agaricales.
