Two essential oils were isolated from discarded perfume lemon and leaves (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F.) by hydro-distillation with good yield (0.044% for perfume lemon and 0.338% for leaves). Their biological activities were evaluated against five selected bacterial strains and Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus, Diptera: Culicidae). Chemical composition indicated that both essential oils were rich in essential phytochemicals including hydrocarbons, monoterpenes and sesquiterpene. These constituents revealed some variability among the oils displaying interesting chemotypes (R)-(+)-limonene (12.29–49.63%), citronellal (5.37–78.70%) and citronellol (2.98–7.18%). The biological assessments proved that the two essential oils had similar effect against bacterial (inhibition zones diameter ranging from 7.27 ± 0.06 to 10.37 ± 0.15 mm; MICs and MBCs ranging from 1.6 to 6.4 mg/mL); against Ae. albopictus larvae (LC50 ranging from 384.81 to 395.09 ppm) and adult mosquito (LD50 ranging from 133.059 to 218.962 μg/cm2); the activity of the two chemotypes ((R)-(+)-limonene and citronellal): larvae (LC50 ranging from 267.08 to 295.28 ppm), which were all presented in dose-dependent manners. Through this work, we have showcased that recycling and reusing of agriculture by-products, such as discarded perfume lemon and leaves can produce eco-friendly alternatives in bacterial disinfectants and mosquito control product.

One of the main challenges in oil–water separation of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) is to obtain essential oils from the aromatic water of TCM. In this study, silicon dioxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (SiO 2 /PVDF) membranes were prepared using nonsolvent induce phase separation. Then polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated to obtain PDMS/SiO 2 /PVDF membranes. Separated essential oils and water from aromatic water in the gaseous state by vapor permeation membrane separation technology. The relationship between membrane structure and membrane separation effect was investigated. Response surface methodology was used to develop a quadratic model for the separation factor, membrane permeation separation index and membrane preparation process. The optimal process parameters for the membrane separation were 12.31% (mass) concentration of PVDF solution, 9.6% (mass) of N,N -dimethylacetamide in the solidification bath, and 0.2 g hydrophobic nano-SiO 2 incorporation, with a separation factor of 14.45, and a membrane flux of 1203.04 g·m –2 ·h –1 . Compared with the PDMS/PVDF membranes, the separation factor and membrane flux were increased by 68.59% and 3.46%, respectively. Compared with the SiO 2 /PVDF membranes, the separation factor and membrane flux were increased by 478% and 79.33%, respectively. Effectively mitigated the limitations of traditional polymer membrane material performance affected by the “trade-off” effect. Attenuated total internal reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterize the PDMS/SiO 2 /PVDF membranes, and gas chromatography was used to characterize the permeate. In addition, the contents of L -menthol, L -menthone, menthyl acetate and limonene in the permeate, conformed to the European Pharmacopoeia standards . This study provided an effective preparation strategy of a feasible hydrophobic powder polymer membrane for the separation of essential oils from gaseous peppermint aromatic water.

This study harnessed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite (PDMS/PTFE) membranes for the separation of peppermint aromatic water in vapor state. The effects of the PDMS coatings’ morphology structure on the separation performance of the membrane were investigated. The vapor permeation process, selective-permeation mechanism, and membrane stability were explored. Results showed that the separation effect of the membranes depended on the degree of polymerization of PDMS coating. Almost no water molecules can pass through the membrane during the 6 h separation process, and the separation factor was as high as 668. The main pharmacodynamic components in the separated permeate were L-menthol, L-menthone, and menthyl acetate, accounting for 49.16 %, 26.3 %, and 5.46 %, respectively, which conformed to the standard of the European Pharmacopoeia . The parameters of membrane separation showed that the maximum permeability coefficients of L-menthol, L-menthone, menthyl acetate, and water were 40.80, 20.28, 4.211, and 0.3945, respectively, at 105 °C and 65 kPa. This finding indicated that the large difference in permeability coefficient was the key to the excellent selectivity of the PDMS/PTFE membrane for separating volatile pharmaceutical components and water molecules in the peppermint aromatic-water system.

A combined dispersed liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and chromatography (GC) method was developed for the determination of 24 aromatic substances in rosemary hydrosol in this work. The pretreatment method of DLLME was optimized by carefully selecting the appropriate extraction agents, dispersants, and their respective amounts. With carbon tetrachloride as the extractant and acetone as the dispersant, the enrichment factor of DLLME is 13.3, and the 24 target substances such as eucalyptol, camphor and verbenone can be separated within 31 min and quantified by an external standard method using gas chromatography (GC). The correlation coefficient r2of the linear regression equation is within the range of 0.9983 to 0.9991. The detection limit of the method was 0.02 mg/L, the recovery rate of the spiked solution was 76.4–118.4%, the relative standard deviation was 0.4–6.9% and the method was used to detect the semi-finished products of rosemary hydrosol and the finished rosemary hydrosol sold on the market. This method also provides a reference for the qualitative and quantitative determination of aromatic substances in other hydrosols.
